nobody. it was just venomous machismo aimed at a fictitious target, not at a particular/real-life one

Honestly, The Bridge is Over is the only east coast diss track I've heard that I'd consider classic. Songs like Ether and Takeover are good, but I wouldn't call them classic diss tracks like No Vaseline, Dollars and Sense, Dre Day, Real Muthufuckin G's, etc.

Biggie's Who Shot Ya was obviously aimed at 2pac, but he doesn't even say his name in the song, so I wouldn't count that. It's a tight track though. 2nd Round KO is ok. LL's response was harder and so was his original diss on 4,3,2,1 although LL again never mentions Canibus's name on the track.

The Bridge is Over set the standard for diss track, none of their New York contemporaries have come close to making a classic diss track since then, I would say Nas came the closest with Ether.

I agree "Ether" and "Takeover" are slightly overrated. But what makes Dre Day or Real Muthaphukkin G´s better than all East Coast disses (except The Bridge is Over)? The lyrics on those songs are very direct and "hard" in a certain sense, but there are fewer lines that really hit hard than on many other diss tracks I know. The rapping is simple and the message is always the same...only thing that almost no east coast diss can touch is the beats which are indeed some of the best work in hiphop ever
