The CIA invested US$2.1 billion over a 10-year period to assist the anti-Soviet resistance.
Soviet tactics utilized the following military and economic efforts.
* The deployment of the 40th Soviet Army (over 100,000 ground troops). With air support, logistics, MVD troops, and other miscellaneous troops, the total number is estimated by some observers at approximately 175,000 troops total. This represented almost 20% of the category 1 (front-line) divisions possessed by the Soviet Union at the time.
* More than 5 million anti-personnel mines were dropped by the Soviet Union ([1]).
* Russian costs (in 1986 dollars) were approximately US$20 Billion / yr.
These tactics, among other things, resulted in some of the following:
* Approximately 90,000 Afghan combatants killed (mujahadeen and government), and 90,000 wounded. Including civilian casualities, estimates are that 10% of the total population and 13.5% of the male population was killed, 1.5 million killed overall.
* Approximately 15,000 Soviets were killed and over 53,000 wounded.
* Approximately 6 million refugees were driven into surrounding countries.
* Damages of approximately $50 Billion US to Afghanistan, about 1/3 to 1/2 the net worth of the country.
* Agricultural production reduced by 50%, livestock losses of 50%.
* 70% of paved roads destroyed.
* Of 15,000 villages in the country, 5,000 were destroyed outright or made economically unsupportable by destruction of all economic resources such as fields, wells or roads.
War tactics and history
Afghans used the heliograph as a secure low-tech communication method. Afghans also used Stinger missiles in order to take down helicopters, which proved effective. The first one was shot down in this way on December 16, 1982.
Afghanistan's rocky terrain proved to be a great advantage for Afghanis to hit supply lines on route to Afghanistan.
Accounts of Soviet soldiers burying village women and children alive were made.

thanks for proving my point 2.1 billion over 10 years is fuck all
Fuck You, Pay Me:
The U.S. knew that the Soviets couldn't afford their version of a "Vietnam", and they knew Afghans would be the ones able to deliver that damage. The war with Afghanistan was one of the main reasons why the Soviet empire collapsed right after.
Yeah obviously the only damage would be to Afghanistan... and there would be more casualties in Afghanistan because the war was fought on Afghan soil. By the way, a lot of the weapons were delivered through Pakistan, and what they did is keep a lot of that shit to themselves and gave Afghans their cheap shit. Afghans also didn't have tanks or aircraft... not even body armor or bullshit like that. They would be wearing their regular (or not so regular lol) clothes and just run up on those fuckers with some AK's.
Thirteen:
yeah what afghanistan freedom fighters did to the russians cannot be downplayed by numbers, they were people that were barely armed that prevented one of the worlds greatest armies of that time from accomplishing their goals
this is like having a PAL football league stop the Patriots from scoring
