Question about cell phones and ringtones

I just recently got a new cell phone, and I was wondering if I could make my own tones and transfer them straight from a computer to the phone. Would I need any programs to do this? I have a Samsung SGH-x497. Thanks in advance.

i have a motorola and i use a data cable
