Who agrees? "Memory Lane" was #1 beat on Illmatic
« on: April 08, 2002, 06:46:45 AM »
As y'all know, Nas' "Illmatic" is one of hip-hop's finest albums lyrically AND musically... and I ask y'all.. what song had the finest musical production on this classic... my two cents go for the brilliant (DJ) Premier production "Memory Lane (Sittin' In The Park)". This is song is the definition of hip-hop: An exquisite, beautiful, brillant & unbelievably catchy Premier beat (which I think was his best production ever) paired with Nas' flawless lyricism/mechanichally smooth flow makes this a definite hip-hop classic...

I know "The World Is Yours" & "Represent" came close... put the pure music vibes "Memory Lane" spreads to the listener simply hypnotizes me...

What is your thoughts ?

Halftime.

'I gotta have it, I miss Mister Magic - versatile, my style switches like a faggot'.

The song got Nas his deal, without it  he might not have been able to drop illmatic at all. The song was initially featured on the soundtrack for a movie called 'Zebrahead'.
It was the 3rd track he ever released.

NY State Of Mind Is Very High Up There. Nearly All The Beats From Illmatic Are Amazing, The Rest Are Just Dope.  :)

I prefere Life's A Bitch, it's got a laid back vibe and the trumpet at the end is just straight dope.

I definitely like memory lane... it's a hot ass sample, primo's represent was fire too.  the trumpet at the end of life's a bitch was played by nas' pops... he's an established jazz artist.  He put out a couple of albums, nas even appeared on one of them. His name is Olu Dara.

I think that if you take one of the 'O's' out of 'Good' it's 'God', if you add a 'D' to 'Evil' it's the 'Devil'. I think some cool motherfucker sat down a long time ago and said 'let's figure out a way to control motherfuckers'.
