What does this stand for?

This was a topic question that was brought up in another forum and I was just wondering if anyone in here knew? On Eminem's album he has LP following his titles (Slim Shady LP), which I assume stands for Lengthen/Long Play. He also has EP following his title, Slim Shady EP, but what does EP stand for?  ???

That's what I thought? But I didn't understand why it'd be Long Play and Extended Play. Especially when EP albums are usally shorter?

Yeah that's odd but I'm pretty sure it's Extended Play. Maybe I'm wrong.  ??? Anybody else have some ideas?

I really don't know for sure. I use to think LP was short for album, because vinyl records, or albums are called LP for short.

And EP, I don't know what it means, but usually an EP is a sample album, or an ablum with like 3 to 6 tracks. They are no long enought to be whole albums, but they are not singles because they are more than a couple of songs. Like Creepin' On The Come Up, Bone Thugs N' Harmony was an EP because it was like 5 songs and it was a small sample of what Bone could do. Other certified EP's, 100 Miles and Runnin' - N.W.A., It's On (Dr. Dre)=187killum - Eazy E, How Do You Want It EP - 2Pac.

LP is the whole damn album, so basically like any whole CD. The whole 9 plue songs, with skit, meant for the general public to buy, not sample the artist.

ive always thought it stood for extended play but it doesnt make sense...how is it extended when its shortened?

oh this brings up an argument i had with an eminem fan a long time ago in sum chatroom...

he was convinced that eminem came up with the LP and EP shit on the end of his album titles...and i did all i could to convince this lil bitch the diference between an EP and an LP and what they actually mean...and that EP & LP have nothing really to do with eminem. I can't be arsed explaining all the shit we had 2 say 2 each other...cos in the end he still went away convinced that EP&LP were summat eminem came up with.

i know it has nothin 2 do with the thread...but i just thought i'd bring that up there to see if any1 else has ever had to lay it down to sum1 exactly what these terms mean LP&EP?

It goes like this:

A single is traditionally 1 song with 1 b-side.

An EP is anything between a single and 10 tracks.
Thus it is "extended play" as compared to a single.

An LP is anything over 10 tracks.
Thus it is "long play" as compared to singles & EPs.

Far as I know it does stand for "Extended Play". Which means, you gotta look at it as an extended single and not as a short LP

its the opposite.....EP albums r short (like 5 songs)

Oh okay, I get it know!!  8) They are comparing EP to a single, that makes more sense. I just didn't get why it'd be Extended Play and Long Play, thanks for clearing that up to all that replied.

erm...there was nop marshall mathers ep, it was the marshall mather lp

there was a slim shady ep which had 10 songs on it...
