Daddy Rich (of Savage Life) Interview

Can you introduce yourself?
Wuts good. This ya boy Daddy Rich of Savage Life reppin the Yay Area West Coast yaddddaaadig!
What is Savage Life?
Savage Life is a group I came up with in like ’95. It was me and my homie Shame. Then we kinda went solo. Then started the group back up with Hooli Automatic. Savage life just means everythang we do. We do it savage man, from shows to networkin to promotin to song writing wutever. It’s the life we live feel me.
Yessir, Savage Life has dropped an album, right. Are you happy with the way it sounds?
Yeah man, fasho. We have had other projects come out and been on lots of other people’s projects, but this was the first album with the Savage Life imprint. We had other Savage Life albums that never came out, but as far as this project man, it’s been nuthin but positive, real talk.
What's your favorite track of the album?
Man, that’s a hard question. I like a few. I like “Pop ya colla” with Spice 1 and Techniec. I like “Millennium boogie” wit B-Legit and Harm and I like “Sav Life” and “On my own”.
Are or will there be any videos for it?
Yeah man, we gonna do some videos that will be on the DVD. Not sure yet which songs we gonna do, but it will be more than 1 or 2 fasho.
We've heard legends like Daz Dillinger, Spice 1, B-Legit and MC Eiht appear on the Sav Life album. How was it like working with them and how did you get in contact with them?
I linked up with Eiht at a contest I did back in the day. We hit the studio a few weeks later. Me and Spice go way back. Bela and Daz and myself have mutual friends so we made it happen.
Word on the streets is that the Savage Life will be re-released with extra tracks and what not. Can you tell us something about it?
Yeah man, we got 4 new cuts on it and a new album cover. Everything has just been stepped up man. It’s a beautiful thing and we got the DVD too. So the fans gonna get all new stuff fasho.
You've dropped a solo mixtape, Savage Life + Shame Lector mixtape and Shame Lector dropped a solo mixtape. Why did you decide to upload them so people could download 'em for free?
Oh man, we was just droppin them for the fans or people that aint heard about us. So they can get a feel of our music and the response was real big.
Are there any other projects coming out on Savy Sav Records?
Fasho, we got Shame. His album is called California. It’s crazy. People gonna luv that album. Hooli got a solo finished already, but he don’t have the title yet. And ima start workin on a solo. We been already talkin bout another savage life album. A group album wit his and Shame and maybe a comp with all our homies on it. Maybe even a soundtrack for the DVD, that is sumthin we been talkin about too.
Have you changed or evolved your raps throughout the years?
Yeah, I mean the more u do sumthin the better u get. So as far as evolving as a song writer I’d have to say yeah no doubt, but as far as the formula, we keep it the same, but we change with the times. The game is fast paced. There is new shit jumpin off all the time, styles and shit. Shit is hot for a minute then cool off, but that real shit is here forever and stands the test of time. That real west coast hip hop feel me.
Do you think "westcoast" fans focus too much on Southern Cali gangsta rap and forget about "hiphop" and the Bay?
Yeah, I think a lot of the younger fans focus on that a lot or wutever starts up sum hoe cake ass gossip. But on the real, the real ones know wuts up. If u really in the game u would know it aint nuthin but luv. Bosses is bosses man, the artist been down from jump street. It’s just sum fans that wanna kick up dust. It’s funny to me.
Would you sign to a label like G-Unit Records if they offered you a deal?
Honestly I wouldn’t sign to a label that got a lot wax drama poppin off. I don’t get down like that. I ain’t into that shit so I guess my answer is no.
Are there any plans for touring?
Not really plans on that yet but when the album drops we will be planning sumthing. We do a lot of shows in the Bay, but we gonna take it on the road fasho. It’s just a matter of hittin my contacts feel me.
What's your opinion on Europeans or people outside the USA trying to rap? (Like Bigg White Bob and Endlezz Hustle Recordz?)
Man, I think music was put here for the world to embrace and have at least that 1 thing in common on a worldly basis. Cuz I don’t give a fuck who you are or where your from or how old u are. Everyone likes sum type of music. It goes back many moons. So hip hop is the voice of this generation. So it no big surprise that it has spread over the world. I think its a beautiful thing. I did songs wit people from overseas. They got the album and be like yo we knock that Savage Life out here. It’s luv. And White Bob is one of the dopest white rappers feel me.
Which emcees or music are you feeling right now?
There are a lot. The Bay got a lot of hot shit right now. Same with LA. I see a lot of artists doin there thang and it’s good, but wut I really been bumpin non stop is B-Legit Block Movement that’s sumthin serious.
What do you think about the current state of hiphop?
It’s got its ups and downs. A lot of politics have taken over the game and that money is a mutha fucka. The mainstream brainwashed a lot of people. From fans to even big record executives. They ain’t lookin at the big picture. They gettin pimped by sumthin that was supposed to be ours. That money changes things. This game is so damn thick its sumtimes hard to comprehend.
Ok. Let's do word association. I say a word and u say the first thing that comes to mind.
