Title: Vancouver is 'best city to live'
Post by: Suga Foot on October 04, 2005, 04:32:14 PM
http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/europe/10/04/eui.survey/

LONDON, England (CNN) -- Vancouver is the world's most desirable place to live, according to a new survey, while Papua New Guinea's Port Moresby is at the other end of the scale.

The Canadian city, nestled on the Pacific coast, was one of four locations in that country to rank at the top of the Economist Intelligence Unit's livability survey, which looked at conditions in 127 cities.

The other top-ranking Canadian cities were Toronto, Calgary and Montreal.

Australia also fared well in the survey by the London-based group, with Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Sydney scoring high marks along with Vienna, Austria, and Geneva and Zurich in Switzerland.

The EIU study assessed nearly 40 indicators in five broad categories -- stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.

"In the current global political climate, it is no surprise that the most desirable destinations are those with a lower perceived threat of terrorism," said Jon Copestake, editor of the report.

Joining Port Moresby at the bottom of the list were Algiers, Algeria, and Dhaka, Bangladesh. Karachi, Pakistan, and Lagos, Nigeria, also ranked poorly. The EIU said 10 cities -- all in Asia, Africa or the Middle East -- had aspects of daily life that "present challenges."

By contrast, the EIU said 63 cities fell into the top livability bracket.

"This reflects the fact that many global business centers have a developed infrastructure and widespread availability," the report states. "Still, the overwhelming majority of cities in the top livability range are based in western Europe and North America."

The report said Canada, "with low crime, little threat from instability or terrorism and a highly developed infrastructure," is the most livable destination in the world.

"Although higher crime rates and a greater threat of terror puts U.S. cities below those of Canada, U.S. cities are still among the world's most livable." Cleveland and Pittsburgh had the highest American scores.

Only three cities in eastern Europe fall into this bracket along with 13 cities from Asia, the EUI said.

No way in hell, Toronto is terrible. You couldn't give me a house for free to live there. It's violent, crowded, full of foreigners and  dirty. I've never understood why people like it.

Edmonton is great! So's Calgary. I've always toyed with the idea of fucking off to Alberta, such a great province.

Not much to go by, seems like they only chose Capitals, and the biggest cities in the big countries..

This poll has ZERO credibility. For God's sake, they listed my city (Cleveland) as the best in America. I mean come on.....

Ey Lincoln why u so shook?

Not really shook. I just don't like Toronto, it's just everything I don't like. It's nice to visit once or twice a year but I couldn't imagine working or living there.

Although one thing I will say is that the Go Train is great, we should have those everywhere.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

There's nothing about the hood here that warrants any kind of visit. Too many hot head kids with something they think they have to prove. What hood you from again? You told me once but I forgot. Somewhere in North York right? Flemo or Jane/Finch, or are you in Regent?

Well to be fair you can live in Toronto and deal with absolutely none of what you mentioned. I still don't like the place, but it's mainly downtown that bothers me. If you live in central to West Scarborough, or the places I mentioned in North York, or Down Town then yeah, but you can live in east Scarborough, Etobicoke, or any of the suburbs like Vaughn, Richmond Hill or Markham then you're fine. And if you live in Rosedale then you're safe from everything that isn't Rich White and Canadian. I went there once and walked around. Wasn't there more than 8 minutes before local security came and escorted me out.

Etobicoke is gangsta in the north and south, the central is the subarbs

Im from Etobicoke, south of Rexdale (like 5 min drive). Dixon Strip, Scarlett Block. I grew up there and my fam is still there.
Since i started school i been livin on my own, near Jane and Finch

The hood aint for everybody.

I forgot Rexdale was in Etobicoke. I thought it was in North York for some reason. I guess cause it's so close. I was talking more about central west Etobicoke on the border of Mississauga. I was working in that area for a few weeks and it was like a neighbourhood from a TV show like 7th Heaven or Growing Pains. It gets like that in far east Scarborough too by Mowat C.I., (I remember I visited that school once and I couldn't belive all the white people. I'm used to be one of three or four whites).

Rosedale is very much like a TV town too except with the mansions around each corner. Take the Yonge Line on the subway and get off on Rosedale one day. What funny is I never see anyone get off there. The rich people basically pay for the stop but never use it because they'd rather drive and downtown isn't fr from there anyway. I gues the subway is there just incase they don't want to fight traffic that day. If you do check the area out just don't expect to stay long. The security was watching me hard. When they came to me I even made a joke "but I'm white". I left to avoid any hassle and since I didn't really have a reason to be there I saw no point in arguing. Arguing for the sake of arguing is just being ignorant.

You really want to see a sight, check out Bridlepath. Some of the houses there look like Wayne Manor. Huge mansions with security gates and driveways as long as some small streets.
