Title: "The Departed" best since "Goodfellas"- Emanuel Levy
Post by: Javier on September 26, 2006, 11:46:00 AM
The Departed A

It’s a pleasure to report that "The Departed," the gritty crime-gangster drama, is Martin Scorsese’s best film since the 1990 “The GoodFellas,“ to which the new film bears loose resemblance in thematic rather than stylistic terms.

After two quasi-epics, “Gangs of New York” and “Aviator,” both of which Oscar-nominated, and both flawed for different reasons, Scorsese is back on terra firma with a movie that’s right up his alley, one that’s linked directly not only to “GoodFellas,” but also to “Mean Streets,” back in 1973.

Like Michael Mann (who, incidentally, produced Scorsese’s “Aviator”), Scorsese is one of American cinema’s strongest proponents of film noir, infusing most of his films with darkly humorous approach and quintessentially noirish themes, motifs, and visuals. Nonetheless, unlike Mann, particularly in his last, disappointing effort, “Miami Vice,” in which striking style triumphed over a routine narrative, Scorsese is trying to find new subjects, with varying degrees of success, to which he can apply his singular noirish paradigm.

The story of "The Departed" is vaguely based on the 2002 brilliant Hong Kong thriller, "Infernal Affairs," which achieved great success in Asia before being released (briefly) in the U.S. in 2004. The collaboration with writer William Monahan (“Kingdom of Heaven”), an Irish-American native of Boston, proves fruitful in ways that the teaming with Paul Schrader was a generation ago in movies like “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull.” Monahan and Scorsese treat their movie as one inspired by “Internal Affairs,” rather than a remake per se.

If this movie is as good as everyone says and Scorsese still gets robbed at the Oscars, I say we recreate the LA riots.

Scorsese doesn't just make remakes though, like the critic said above it was mainly just influenced by it.  His only prior remake, Cape Fear, can be seen as a completely different film.  R

It's by far the best movie I've seen this year.  The cast was just unbelievable, a few actors had their best performances like Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg, and Vera Farmiga.  I loved it, and yep it's his best since Goodfellas.  It's also better than a few of his older films as well.

Just saw it tonight.  Pretty damned ill.

Also, did anyone else notice they used "Thief's Theme" by Nas in this movie?  It plays right after Costigan and his cousin do the job early in the movie.  I think that's the first time Scorsese's used a hip-hop song in one of his movies.

Suxh a dope movie. Movie of the year easily thus far. There are so many good films coming out though this fall, but this is a great start, especially after that shitty summer of movies.

Brilliant movie

Easily the best movie that i've seen this year and the best movie that Scorsese has done since Goodfellas

Mark Wallberg was outstanding in this - thought that his performance stole the movie

I liked these lines

"Marriage is an important part of getting ahead. Lets people know you're not a homo. Married guy seems more stable. People see the ring, they think "At least somebody can stand the son of a bitch." Ladies see the ring, they know immediately you must have some cash and your cock must work."

"Who the fuck set up the cameras?"
"Who the fuck are you?"
"I'm the fucker that does his job, you must be the other guy!"

Mark Wahlberg had a bunch of great lines.

GREAT FUCKIN MOVIE. acting was amazing but i think that dicaprio was just stellar but everyone played their roles really well. lmfao and jack nicholas is fuckin hilarious. and i loved the accents by dicaprio and during the trailers i saw a bit more of "blood diamonds" and his south african accent sounds sooo on point.

i was talkin to some friends and they said that internal affairs is better though and they said that the departed was almost like a complete remake of internal affairs.  :o

honestly, right when mark wahlberg clapped matt damon up, i wasnt worried about all that petty bullshit ur thinking about.  as long as the chain is over, and matt damon got his, it was all good.  great movie tho, didnt feel like 2.5 hrs.

I'm assuming that the envelope contained evidence and instructions to give the evidence to Dignam. Madolyn gave the envelope to Dignam and he set up the kill since with Queenan dead it was personal.

Just finished watching it, definitely a great film, some of the performances were amazing, especially Di Caprio and Nicholson and I loved right at the end where they had the rat crawling across outside his apartment.

However, this was pretty much just a straight remake of Internal Affairs and therefore despite the fact that it is a great film you do always know what is going to happen if you've watched that already. Plus, Di Caprio's performance, despite being excellent isn't quite on the level of Tony Leung's in the same role. There also wasn't as much interaction between the gang leader and the chief as in the Hong Kong original, which was a bit disappointing as that was one of the highlights of the original.

If you've never seen Internal Affairs though, you will enjoy The Departed more as it will all be new to you and on those terms I can definitely see why people are claiming this to be in their Top 10 films ever.

it's NOT better than infernal affairs

even though departed is a hella good movie, people must remember that the entire movie is taken from infernal affairs.. i can't see how this movie is anywhere near  "masterpiece-oscar-material", when infernal affairs didn't get shit (it did get the hong-kong-oscar though).

The plot twists in the film isn't what makes the film great, it's the theme and the character development in the movie that makes it really good.  I haven't seen IA, but from what my friend told me The Departed really improves the original's theme and character development.  I really want to see IA though.
