Conceding 2 goals in the first 8 minutes is not the best start to a CL campaign.

Well we got through it. It would be very nice to see us score more than 1 goal in a game for once but we did what we needed to do. Best to start off with a win. Ronaldo is a god. Hopefully there is far more goals to come from him this season.

From my point of view it΄s good to see Shaktar winning against a team like Celtic (not because they beat your team) cause they beat Red Bull Salzburg in the CL qualifier and I thought it was only because Salzburg was so damn stupid. Salzburg won the home game 1:0. At the away game they got the early 1:0 lead (like after 5 minutes) which basically equalled the win cause Shaktar had to score 3 golas and guess what? lol Of course they did. The brazilian players in their team are sick.

That is starting to get annoying now as I know we are capable of scoring more goals than that in a game. But we only need 4 more points from our games against Kiev to go through. Lets save the great form for later in the season is probably what Fergie is after.

true what we really need is an early goal in a game and then they will probably relax a bit more.

A 4-2 win but I'm not completely overjoyed by this win. Obviously I'm happy we won but our performance wasn't amazing tonight. I don't like us conceding goals at all. We looked slightly dodgy at the back tonight so i'm slightly concerned.

But we are a step closer to qualification and thats what counts.

What a result for the Arsenal last night totally outstanding, props on that

I'll happily take a 0-0 draw with Barcelona and leave us on 7 points after the first 3 games, it's going better than most predicted for us  8)

we didnt defend great especially at corners, not to concerned though.

It was one of thise games where we should have scored a lot more, good to see anderson play so well (MOM), if scholes is out for a long period he will have an important role to play.

Too right it was mate, absolutely horrific.

Like the commentator said "you don't see much worse than that".

The only worse tackles you see like those are when someone actually breaks someone else's leg.

Horrifying.

Congrats about Porto. (Even tho I hate 'em) ;D

The word "Seville" mean anything to you?

Completely agree with Mac10 though, one of the worst tackles i have ever seen without serious injury.

And take my word for it, give it 2 - 3 years premiership teams will be trying to sign Scott Brown for tens of millions. If Michael Chopra and Kieran Richardson are worth six a piece, this boys worth 20.

Skillfull, passionate, hard as fuck and gets it right up the huns. World Class.

Another fantastic result, unbeaten at Parkhead since 2004 if im no wrong? Mon the Hoops.

The German clubs ain't shit internationally without Bayern... I don't get what's wrong with them lol, Bremen is way better than some of the clubs they lost to  :-X

No more Klose.  That's what happened to Bremen.

wrong. they're just fucked because of the injuries atm.

but very sad day for German football...again

Hope that at least one of our team wins the Uefa-Cup

I am never wrong.

Losing Klose was massive, yeah they might have players out.

But Klose was the one world-class player that Bremen had.

^^^

Diego is still there... he's already a world class player and he's the heart of Bremen. Besides that Mertesacker is also a world class player

yeah the loss of Klose was massive, but i'm sure they'll get a new top scorer soon

Anyway down to business:

The criteria for teams level on points (in case anyone is still unaware) are separated by:

1) The results of games between the teams in the tie (if tied, by goal difference and then by away goals counting double).

2) Goal difference in all group games.

3) Highest number of goals scored in all games.

4) Highest Uefa ranking over the previous five seasons.

UEFA Champions League : Group A
Put simply, if Liverpool beat Marseille in their final group game then they will definitely go through. If they lose they will definitely go out. Complications arise should Liverpool and Marseille draw. Marseille beat Liverpool at Anfield earlier in the campaign, meaning they would edge the Reds out on the basis of that result, assuming Porto beat or draw with Besiktas in the group's other match.

But if Liverpool and Marseille draw and Besiktas pull off a shock by beating Porto, the Reds would go through. In this scenario, Liverpool, Marseille and Porto would all be on eight points. Liverpool would go through with the best goal difference in the head-to-head matches between the three teams.

UEFA Champions League : Group B
Chelsea are definitely through as group winners, regardless of the result of their final match against a Valencia side who cannot progress. A home win against Rosenborg will be enough for Schalke to join the Blues in the last 16, but the Norwegian side would go through with a point away from home.

UEFA Champions League : Group C
All four teams can still qualify but Real Madrid and Olympiakos will be favourites as they are at home to the bottom two teams in the last matches and a draw would be enough for either to qualify. Bremen will qualify only if they win at Olympiakos. Lazio will be sure of qualification if they win in Madrid but Bremen do not win in Greece. If Bremen do win in Greece, Lazio would have to win by at least two goals in Madrid to go through.

UEFA Champions League : Group D
AC Milan and Celtic have sealed their places in the last 16. Benfica qualify for the knockout stages of the Uefa Cup.

UEFA Champions League : Group E Table
Barcelona will go through as group winners, and Rangers will join them in the last 16 if they draw or beat Lyon at home in the final group match. Rangers won 3-0 in Lyon earlier in the competition so a draw at Ibrox would put them through thanks to a better head-to-head record against the French team.

UEFA Champions League : Group F Table
Manchester United have taken first place in the group and Roma have secured the second spot.

UEFA Champions League : Group G
Inter Milan have clinched top spot in the group and Fenerbahce are favourites to go through with them. PSV must beat Inter at home and hope Fenerbahce fail to beat bottom-of-the-table CSKA in Turkey to take the second place.

UEFA Champions League : Group H
Arsenal and Sevilla have both qualified for the last 16, with Slavia Prague taking a place in the Uefa Cup. Arsenal will finish top of the group if they beat Steaua Bucharest at home and Sevilla fail to win in Prague in the last group games.

Over the last few days, many Rangers supporters have kindly pointed out that Celtic's qualification for the last 16 is not in fact valid because a number of fundamental football principles were ignored. Among these infractions, the most serious ones were:

1. SOME OF CELTIC'S OPPONENTS MADE DEFENSIVE MISTAKES OR GOALKEEPING ERRORS WHICH CELTIC EXPLOITED TO SCORE GOALS.
Celtic FC now accepts that it is unsporting to apply pressure on their opponents in the hope of capitalising on mistakes at some point in the course of a 90-minute match. The club had previously regarded this as a valid approach to creating scoring opportunities. Celtic FC apologises for this tactic and will never again try to benefit from their opponents' inability to handle this pressure.

2. CELTIC'S HAUL OF NINE POINTS FROM THREE MATCHES IS NULL AND VOID BECAUSE ALL THE POINTS WERE SECURED FROM HOME WINS.
Celtic FC had previously been unaware of this rule and begs forgiveness for only recently discovering that seven points is better than nine if some of the seven points were won away from home. Celtic FC regrets this oversight.

3. LATE GOALS DO NOT COUNT.
Celtic FC is at fault for believing that a goal scored towards the end of the game is worth the same as a goal scored at any other time. Had the club realised this, there would have been no need to feel any dismay after conceding a late goal to Benfica in Lisbon and Celtic FC now apologise for an inappropriate reaction to what has turned out to be a 0-0 draw.

4. GOALS DO NOT COUNT IF THE BALL IS DEFLECTED INTO THE NET.
It can now be admitted that some of the club's employees are in the habit of shooting towards goal before the opposing defenders have had a chance to get out of the way and this unsporting practice can make it difficult for the goalkeeper to read the flight of the ball. This is a reprehensible tactic and Celtic FC undertakes to forbid its application forthwith. Henceforth, no Celtic player will be allowed to direct the ball goalwards if there is any danger of a goal resulting from a deflection.

5. CELTIC HAD SOME LUCKY BREAKS IN QUALIFYING.
Admittedly, Celtic were very fortunate that Shaktar didn't take more advantage of their special dispensation to be allowed to control the ball with their hands, as Brandao did when he opened the scoring for Shaktar at Celtic Park. It was also fortuitous that AC Milan weren't awarded a soft penalty more than once when their forwards fell down dramatically in the penalty area. Luckier still was the fact that rival teams were not skillful enough to score more goals in the face of determined defending and goalkeeping by the Celtic players.

Celtic FC can only apologise to the faithful supporters of Rangers for the anguish and disappointment that they have endured in the wake of these violations of the Spirit of the Game.

Yeah cause we are the only club to have qualified with 7 points eh?  ::) (Legia Warsaw, Dynamo Kyiv, Lokomotiv Moscow, Werder Bremen and Liverpool from the 2nd round group stage)

Though we only lost 1 game in the group that season and finished above the team that took 5 goals from you lot in the qualifying round

For a team that has never won an away game in the Champions League (and only taken 1 point in 15 games) you've got to admit that it you's have a fair amount of luck (and a very good home record) to qualify from the group again

Though where has all this 'group of death' stuff that the Scottish media came from  ??? ??? Most celtic fans that I know (and most of the Scottish media) thought that they would progress without too many major problems

Nah, I wish we get as far as possible now that we're out of the Carling Cup and the FA Cup. But I think the main focus for Wenger & co is PL

http://www.arsenal.com/article.asp?thisNav=News&article=487801&lid=NewsHeadline&Title=Arsenal+complete+Champions+League+century
Quote
Arsenal will reach a significant milestone when they walk out to face Milan at Emirates Stadium tonight. The first leg against the European champions is the Club's 100th fixture in the Champions League.

Arsθne Wenger has taken charge of every one of them but even the Frenchman struggled to recall all the highlights when he was put on the spot at his pre-match press conference.

"I have not got a big memory," said Wenger. "There is Milan, Juventus, Real Madrid but there are some big disappointments too - Chelsea for example. I also lost in the Semi-Final with Monaco. But certainly the biggest disappointment was losing in the last 13 minutes of the Final against Barcelona."

While Wenger concentrates on tonight's challenge, we trawled through the archives to pick out our highlights and lowlights from Arsenal's first 100 games in the Champions League.

BEST WIN
(http://www.arsenal.com/images/r/realmadrid2006_10.jpg)
Real Madrid 0-1 Arsenal. February 21, 2006
Honourable mentions must go to three storming wins against Serie A opposition - the Henry-inspired 5-1 triumph at Inter and the 3-1 win at Roma, plus Fabregas' 'coming of age' tussle against Vieira when Juventus were humbled at Highbury. But it's hard to look beyond the night in February 2006 when Arsenal became the first English team to win at the Bernabeu. Real Madrid were hot favourites that night, not least because Arsenal were injury-hit and out of touch when they landed in Spain. But Henry's solo goal just after the break sealed a deserved victory and propelled Arsenal towards the Final.

BEST SAVE
(http://www.arsenal.com/images/pics/report/realmadrid08032006_5.jpg)
Jens Lehmann - Arsenal 0-0 Real Madrid. March 8, 2006
Jens Lehmann takes this honour. Not for the penalty save from Riquelme in the dying seconds of the Semi-Final second leg at Villarreal but for his incredible one-handed stop from Raul against Real Madrid at Highbury. Arsenal's precarious 1-0 aggregate lead was almost snuffed out in the second half of the second leg when Raul hit the post from long range and then seemed certain to convert the rebound with Lehmann grounded. But the Arsenal No 1 clambered up to paw the Spaniard's second attempt away from danger. It was a quite stunning stop from a keeper at the height of his powers.

BEST COMEBACK
(http://www.arsenal.com/images/k/keown_shakhtardonetsk.jpg)
Arsenal 3-2 Shakhtar Donetsk. September 20, 2000
Remember Shakhtar Donetsk in September 2000? The Ukraine side led 2-0 at Highbury but Wiltord's strike on the stroke of half-time and two goals in the last five minutes from - of all people - Martin Keown, rescued Arsenal. That has to be the greatest comeback in a single match. But it's worth mentioning the 2003/04 campaign when two defeats and a draw left Arsenal rock-bottom of their group with three games to go. They were two minutes from elimination in their next match but a last-gasp header from Ashley Cole and then victories over Inter and Lokomotiv Moscow saw Arsenal qualify by the skin of their teeth.

BEST GOAL
(http://www.arsenal.com/images/r/realmadrid2006_7.jpg)
Thierry Henry - Real Madrid 0-1 Arsenal. February 21, 2006
There are so many classics to choose from. Parlour's net-buster against Valencia in 2001 got Highbury rocking, Bergkamp's delicate chip finished off Bayer Leverkusen in 2002 and Rosicky's long-range special humbled Hamburg last season. But Henry, predictably, takes this plaudit. He comes close for a sublime finish at Sparta Prague in 2005 (just before breaking the Club's goalscoring record) but nothing quite beats his solo effort at Real Madrid later that season. Henry shrugged off Ronaldo, Mejia, Guti and Ramos before slamming a low shot past Casillas. It was stunning even by his high standards.

BEST OPPONENT
(http://www.arsenal.com/images/c/carew_valencia.jpg)
John Carew - Valencia
Arsenal have been knocked over by some class acts in the past decade. Spartak froze them out in Moscow, Valencia knocked them out twice while Deportivo la Coruna outclassed them at Highbury and the The Riazor. It's fair to say that the lesser lights have troubled Arsenal more than the traditional big guns. But if you want to single out an individual, look no further than John Carew. The giant Norwegian striker, now of Aston Villa, was a menace in a Valencia shirt. He out-climbed Tony Adams to pip Arsenal on away goals in the 2001 Quarter-Final and repeated the trick in the second group stage two years later.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT
(http://www.arsenal.com/images/c/chelsea_championsleague.jpg)
Arsenal 1-2 Chelsea. April 6, 2004
A tough call. Losing the Final in 2006 hurt, especially when Arsenal were just 13 minutes from glory. But Barcelona were a class act and Lehmann's red card left Arsenal a man short for most of the game, so it wasn't unexpected. The Quarter-Final defeat to Chelsea in 2004 was harder to take because the Invincibles were unstoppable in the League but ran out of steam in second leg against their London rivals after a hard-fought FA Cup Semi-Final defeat a few days earlier. With 'only' Monaco and Porto lying in wait, Arsenal had squandered their best chance of lifting the trophy on that sad night at Highbury.

MOST SURPRISING APPEARANCE
(http://www.arsenal.com/images/s/squirrel.jpg)
The squirrel - Arsenal 1-0 Villarreal. April 19, 2006
No, not a shock return from an injured player or an unusual team selection from Arsθne Wenger. The most surprising appearance at an Arsenal Champions League fixture was... a squirrel. The rodent halted play midway through the first half of the Semi-Final first leg against Villarreal at Highbury in April 2006. it emerged from the West Stand, ran across the pitch and was eventually ushered out of play in front of the North Bank. "He was quite fast — and dribbling," smiled Wenger when asked about the incident in his post-match press conference.

It'll be different in the home leg i think. Can't see a massive victory but i think we'll win about 1 or 2 nil. Can't see Lyon scoring.

I can't believe Celtic are the only team to have lost at home out of all 8 first leg ties, considering our home record.

We are the only team left in the tourament needing to go away and win by 2 goals. Unless we win 3-2, 4-3, 5-4, etc.

We are 93.42% out of it.

yeah i went.

It was a strange game, lyon had plenty of the ball but didnt create much other than hitting the post early in the second half. I was never worried that they would get two but there was always the chance they could get one.

Uniteds problem was that rooney basically played up front on his own where he was isolated. Playing anderson behind him with nani and ronaldo joining didnt work that well.

As the game went on we should have had a second, rooney missed a great chance (intercepted a back pass but hit a really weak shot from about 8 yards out at the keeper). Tevez and ronaldo were also wasteful , passing when they should have shot , trying to walk the ball in .

I think we tried to be too clever instead of just going out and playing are normal game we reverted to a formation that was basically set up to catch them on the break.

It would be good if atleast one German team would make it. But I am a supporter of Dortmund, so I wouldn't care much if Schalke  gets eliminated. But I'm sure Schalke would win the penalty kick, your keeper is a joke, while Schalke's  keeper  is very good tonight. That save against Quaresma :o

^let's see what happens

we've been outplaying them like crazy, we deserve 2 move on..but i know it doesnt always work like that.

Hmm, but on the other hand Schalke is a well known looser team. So maybe you got a chance. If shit gets serious, you can always count on Schalski's looser-mentality

I didn't use to think so but England is definately the strongest league in the world. The facts don't lie. Spain comes a close 2nd.

Who wonders? Every  mediocre Emglish  team has more money than Bayern for example. In Italy and Spain  all top-clubs are broke/ or would be broke under normal  circumstances.

progressed as expected, not the best performance though.

Yeah I had some bets on, more or less predicting Man Utd to win by at least a couple. The only surprise for me was that they only scored once.

You at the game mate? What was the story?

yeah i went.

You think you play better with Tevez and Rooney up top?

yeah, without doubt.

Rooney is looking a bit lost without tevez at the mo.

Im a fan of saha but he can never stay fit .

Suprised madrid went out !

Liverpool is a CL team .. it's amazing how they did well these latest seasons in this competition regarding the fact I don't consider them to be a top 5 European teams AT ALL .. some clubs are more efficent in cups where it's all about adjustements between the 2 games and how you match with the opponents than being consistent through a 38 games championship ...  Liverpool is definetely one of them

Seriously mate, there are a 2 man team. You take Torres and Gerrard out and they have no chance. Altho that being said, if they can keep them injury-free then I guess they could win it. I doubt it tho. Too many better teams in the tournament than them.

If they get past Inter and they get one of the 4 better teams I mentioned I expect them to lose.

Nothing is a certainty, I'm just speaking from my opinion and logic based on the quality of the teams still left. Not just in the way they play but the actual players they have. I think based on that Liverpool can't really fuck with a few of the teams left with their current squad. It's a cup competition tho, anything can happen. Remember Greece in 2004? I would say Fenerbahce or Schalke will definately not win it but crazier things have happened.

its not an excuse, but unfortunately we can't play with our best team.
Samuel and cordoba are out, Burdisso is a very good defender but Samuel still a better player at the moment (and is injured).
Chivu's left shoulder is fucked up...... maxwell is injured......and rivas is just a 'normal' player.
Plus...cambiasso is tired,viera not @ 100% and stankovic  :P
We are fucked up.

then i suppose Fabregas and Adebiyor are the only reason arsenal are doing well ::)

He's still shit. I bet if you were to go around and ask every Arsenal fan what player of theirs they hate most, Bendtner would be quite near the top.

As I said, he's only 20 and this is first PL season - I hope he gets better next season and proves you wrong.
And I doubt he's the most hated. I bet Eboue, Diaby and Senderos is above Nicklas.

Atm yes, but IF I were a mangager, I'd pay more for Bendtner - got more potential, like I said - and this is first PL season. He ain't even regular.

ehh i havent watched him enough to comment, but hopefully next year we can compare the potential of him and kryztian(sp) nemeth..he's been on fire for the reserves...on a sidenote was very impressed with Plessius's debut...thought he looked very composed in the centre and have seen him play well for the reserves a few time

which we brings me to my next point....and why theres no way we can end this season trophy less 8) 8) 8) 8)

the reserves won the league today..... ;D ;D ;D

he should make the breakthough next year, especially if Crouch goes, eighteen and he was top scorer for the reserves this year

"Hungarian prospect Krisztian Nemeth has been a sensation for the reserves since joining from MTK Hungaria in the summer of 2007.

A brace on his debut against Man City's second string had Kopites purring – but it was a double in the mini-derby a week later that really got people talking.

Anyone who saw Nemeth during the 2006 UEFA Under-17 Championships wouldn't have been surprised. It was his performances there that first alerted Rafa Benitez and his scouts.

A year later the youngster, who can play as an attacking midfielder or up front, signed a three-year deal at Anfield alongside compatriot Andras Simon. "

Rafa got in loads of youngsters the last two years...you can tell its something i think he admires about Wenger he always goes on about it lol

i thought it was a great game. no way was that a penalty... but sometimes that shit happens. oh and ITV out-did themselves for crappy coverage of a football game, shit commentary, always cutting to fans reactions when vital action was taking place.

Torres' goal! damn, but Walcott's run was amazing.

It was a great game, no doubt - Walcott's run was magnificent - Torres had a wonderful goal, but the penalty was a horrible decision.

I guess we don't deserve to advance with Eboue on the right wing and Senderos in the starting lineup
I still wonder why Wenger doesn't play like this:
GK: Almunia
RB: Eboue CB: Gallas & Toure LB: Clichy
RW: Walcott CM: Diaby / Fabregas & Flamini LW: Hleb / RvP
AM: Fabregas / Diaby / Hleb / RvP (can be moved up to striker)
FW: Adebayor

Walcott has the speed - he'd run the shit outta Aurelio and most left backs in PL.

I fucking hate commentators.  I was hoping to watch both Chelsea vs Fernebache and Arsenal vs Liverpool back to back, and the god damn commentator gave out the result of the Arsenal game right in the final minute of the Chelsea game.  I wish there was an option where you can just listen to the stadium effects and nothing else.

plus hleb handballed it in the run up to the first goal

im not even going to bother with the "luck" comment...blatent attempt @ a wind-up lol

i'd rather talk about what a brilliant advert last night was for english football...i really did think we was out when adeybayor scored...but arsenal need a calm head back there...they just look so vulnerable right after they've scored at the moment...and Sendero's is worthy of a place in a Newcastle back four...i thought he was going to get sent off @ 1 point

The best team won on the night IMO. Im sure if you looked over the course of the season, Arsenal would have had a big decision that went in their favour, it always evens out unless your team happens to be called Glasgow Rangers.

And for all the talk of Liverpool palying shite defensive football, they had 3 strikers on the park last night, albeit Kuyt was playing as a winger but he is still a striker. You can sit and tell me all day that Arsenal are the purveyors of beautifull football, a WORLD CLASS team should not have Senderos in the team. He is a nightmare, and not good enough for the championship never mind champions league.

Also, it seems to me, that although Arsenal undoubtedly play some wonderful football, last night again proved that when it comes down to it, they lack the balls for a fight. IMO thats down to not having one "dyed in the wool" gunner, like a tony adams or an ian wright, or in Liverpools case a gerrard/Carragher, or Scholes/Giggs/Neville, or Terry/Lampard....Even abroad, all the succesful teams have a local boy Raul, Puyol, Maldini....Arsenal dont. And thats why they are going to win sweet fuck all.

I was shittin my pants but in the end we deserved it. Park and Evra were immense tonight as were the two centre backs (obviously). Once again Ronaldo didn't play amazing but he didn't have to really. What a goal by Scholes, good enough to win any match. We are back where we belong. 9 years is a very long time for United not to be in a final.

That is definitely the end of the road for Rijkaard. Poor season from his team.

ITV: "You're not going to win a game with chances after chances, you have to use the Man Utd approach, let them attack and your opportunity will come"

wtf!?!?!

also, why is it Old Trafford has the "best" atmosphere? nobody knows what the fuck any of you're singing. same goes for in the pub after the game... lmao.

lol i can hear the songs clearly but maybe its  because i know them all, its different when your there. Even on tv i can clearly hear the words.

Lampard's extra-time penalty helped the Stamford Bridge club to a 4-3 aggregate victory over Liverpool and the Chelsea boss said: "Frank is a brave man.

"Frank was very close to his mother and what has happened to him over the last few days has not been easy.

"He played extremely well and is a little bit happy now."

On his return from compassionate leave, the midfielder calmly converted his spot kick before wheeling away on an emotional celebration.

After kissing the black armband worn in tribute to his mother, Pat, he pointed to his father, Frank senior, in the crowd in a sentimental moment.

Lampard walked from the pitch to tumultuous applause when he was replaced by Andriy Shevchenko shortly before the final whistle.

And Grant added: "It was his decision to play and he played extremely well. We spoke about it yesterday and it was decided he should play then."

Makes sense. We deserve to be here as we are champions whereas Chelsea are not. I hope we win it for that purpose and as a supporter, obviously.

Lets not have any posts saying United weren't champions when they last won it. I am fully aware.
