Quality control or lack of it.
Whether its artists throwing in a quick verse on a track with no thought or time taken. To albums that are filled with filler tracks, why does there need to be 20 plus tracks rather than the best 12. Then you have artists releasing mixtapes all the time and over exposing themselves so eventually no one cares about what they release .
Mixing and mastering
why release something if it isn't mixed or mastered correctly, i kinda expect the sound quality on a mixtape to be inferior to a released album as we r getting it for free. I expect an album im paying money for to be mixed and mastered correctly, no other genre of music seems to have this problem.
Mixtape DJ'S
seriously why do artists need then, there not actually mixing the tracks into each other . All they seem to do is shout over and ruin them.
Skits
Nine times out of ten all they do is disjoint the album, who has ever bought an album for a hot skit no one ! The worst are sex Skits, i doubt anyone wants to hear a rapper getting it on. I also doubt anyone is impressed your a rapper i expect you to be getting it, you don't need to prove it.
Any more ?
-
Nah skits can be mad funny or cool. De La Soul & The Fugees did classic skits, not to forget classic Death Row shit like Doggystyle + The Chronic.
What sound shit is 'forced' comedy on lame skits...producers trying to do skits just because.
-
Mixing and mastering

listen to Metallica's Death Magnetic or Stadium Arcadium by Red Hot Chili Peppers, but you are right, hip-hop CD's often sound wack
I don't like people complaining about how hip-hop was better in the 80's and 90's. There is more shit, but more good music on the other side as well.
-

You'll never hear that analogue sound again, unless studios go back to using old equipment.
-
word @ skits/interludes/intros/outros being one of the worst things in hip-hop..
I always delete them and when I play cds I skip them..
WHY THE FUCK ARE THEY DOIN THOSE USELESS SKITS n shit?
-
I cringe everytime i hear the skits on enter the wu-tang or the infamous. I refuse to believe that they actually talk like that.
-
rappers rushing to put shit out or rappers buying wack ass beats.
don't these people have ears?

i love it when euros add the extra vowel into words like
analogue , colour, neighbourhood
whats the science behind it? oh yall fancy huh?
-
i hate when artists try to make whats hot when its not their style...ex. West Coast artists making crunk music...
-
MC Ren couldve made a semi comeback when Lil Jon came out with Bia Bia. Some of Jon's beats had Ren written all over it at tha time.
Any region will follow the wrong trend at one point or another tho.
-
If a skit has a point, like telling a story or introducing a track, then its fine. But there's way too many skits that add nothing to the album.
I don't like how mainstream rap tends to follow a formula moreso than any other music genre. Alex da Kid produces a hit song and all of a sudden everyone else wants a song that sounds exactly like it. I don't listen to too many other genres but rap has to be the most watered down by far. A lot of these rappers rap to be famous and sell records, while I feel other artists are more likely to put out albums for the sake of making music. Lady Gaga (while I think she sucks) is putting out all kinds of weird music. Just because she can. The biggest rappers are too busy copying each other to do something interesting (with the exception of Watch the Throne).

It's the English most of us from Europe learn at school. It's called something fancy like British English.
-
I agree about the skits, most of them are reduntant. The worst skits/interludes or whatever are those who are attached to the song, just at the end, so you can't delete it when you got the mp3.
I also agree about th e 18+ deep albums. Stick to your 12-13 best tracks.

I hate fans who never lived none of this shit but swear they know who's networth or not.
Fans who swear they are engineers, acting like they can't tell what's dope or not by sound quality, yet they started listening to music in the 90's which was the era of bootleg tapes.
Can't stand fans who act like they can't listen to anything new,and the saying "who is he/she"? Get to know them dumb ass or shut the fucc up. You think you just automatically liked your favorite artist out the blue? Smh
Can't stand artist, labels, and fans who just follow or copy shit just because it happens to be in and popular. If you truly braille it fine, just don't do it to try to fit in and get some attention.
And the one that baffles me which is sorta similar to the last complaint, is people confusing they have swag when all they do is dung beetle the next muthafucca's style. If you dress just like yo favorite rapper or rap like the in thing, bitch that ain't swag, you just a bill Walton cunt. Lil b got swag alot of others just say the word to try to make em look cool. Fact yell

Nah, every genre is the same these days. Sure in every genre you will find experimental artists that go against the grain, that are about the art. But most artists and bands and the labels only care about success. So they follow the formula of what they think will get them big the fastest. That's why you always see hundreds of copycats of anything that's popular. For example, nu-metal with tons of generic bands that sound identical.Or when rap-rock was popular you saw tons of limp bizkit type bands surface. They just want money and the lifestyle they don't care about the music.

*The fans who aren't willing to go along with their favorite artist's new style
So people should just eat it all just because it's their favorite?
No, but a lot of artists are never able to grow because their fan base isn't willing to hear them try anything else.Look at how many people are still stuck on dpg in this forum. A group that haven't been relevant or made good music in over ten years.
-
1. The fans first and foremost.
- Their concern with "realness".
- Their tendency to take the music too seriously when it should just be a form of entertainment.
2. The ignorance perpetuated by fans and the rappers themselves.
3. The lack of evolution in the thoughts and ideas behind the music. On the production front, most of the new shit out is over produced tot he point where the replay value is not there.
Should i go on?

I think its an issue of creativity. Sometimes an artist is trying something new, and sometimes they are going along with established trends. I'm not willing to go along with Ice Cube trying to be crunk.

1. Mainstream rappers with garbage content n lyrics that blow up because the mass of hip hop fans follow whatever everybody else likes.
2. Old rappers that try to change their styles to fit in with new cats because they realize the mass of hip hop fans follow whatever everybody else likes which eventually alienates their original true fanbase.
3. Fake gang rappers that promote gangbangin but dont say shit bout all the bad shit that comes from it like us basically committing genocide against each other over colors we didnt create or streets and neighborhoods we didnt build nor do we own.
4. Subpar rappers that blow up for the simple fact that theyre down with popular mainstream rappers with cultlike fans that love everything said rapper promotes.
5. Young fans that denounce rappers for being old even tho they can still rap and put out quality shit.
And whats with ragging on long albums? I dont like filler either but the answer aint to cut songs off. The answer is to just put 18+ hot songs on an album. You guys had me thinking bout some classics like either one of Redmans first three albums, OB4CL, Warriorz, shit Doggystyle was 19 tracks. Niggas dont need to make less songs they just need more good ones.
-
I'll take a tight cohesive 10-12 track album any day of the week over a 18+ track album.
-
What about a cohesive 18 track album tho Jay? Look at Doggystyle aint no bad song on it so how is gettin less hot shit better than more?

Yes, but an album with 17-19 pure DOPE tracks is so very rare, at least these days.
-
Lack of 'concept' tracks.
Lack of decent beats for good rappers to step to.
Lack of song structure, and ideas...too many linear beats that can never be elevated into a solid track even by the best lyricists, or hooks. (the art of producing a 'complete' track seems to have died in the main)
Lack of real samples being used (selection and application of that art seems dead too. GTFO with any comments bout 'Otis')
Lack of real DJ's choppin shit up. Whats doper that a decent MC spittin over a live DJ (and no ones using scratches any more, the DJ is a part of hip-hop culture that is dying out)
Lack of diversity of production & MC's styles (individuality in artists)
Lack of musicality in production (clinical shit, whats missing I'll call musical resonance in the sounds)
Lack of real artistic collaborations in rappers (critiquing each others shit, not just scribbling 1st draft bars and stepping to the booth)
Lack of real artistic collaborations in musicians and producers (too many producing alone, on the couch)
Lack of producers PRODUCING an artists lyrics too. Is everyone just a beatmaker now? (get your artists putting emphasis on certain words, punctuate, speed up, switch flows..if they aint doing it themselves. And do a second take if they sound rough)
Lack of music that moves you in its sound or content (feel something, nod head, move dance whatever)
Lack of charisma in artists (copycat or fake accent rappers = bullshit)

Well, 6 of them were skits. I own a version that's only 13 songs.
-
I hate the fact that rap albums with the exception of a very few have to have 10 million producers on a album which leave them sounding non cohesive and more like a compilation. Also the fact that every song now has to have that r&b flavor on the hook. Whatever happened to rappers rapping their own hooks?

ontopic:
1. A lot of artists put out too much music. It's quantity over quality and often that's a bad thing;
2. Attention whoring mixtape DJ's. Matter of fact: even if there's no pointless shouting, I'd still rather hear a mixtape with seperate songs instead of the songs being mixed together.

People who think there's a difference between rap and hip hop.
People who complain about rappers dissing other rappers saying they're doing it for attention. Like every diss record in the history of rap hasn't been made for attention.

There's too many children on hip hop sites. They all start out hating on what's popular (ironically) just to try to separate theirselves from their peers and make theirselves seems knowledgable but in reality they're just sheep and 90% of the time they don't have a clue what they're talking about in the first place.
Not that I'm really out there checkin like that but other genres aren't bombarded with this bullshit. On tha contrary u gotta love the enthusiasm.

Things I hate about Hip Hop,,, if you've got a spare 2 hours, let's go:
1) All the rappers who are in movies because their rappers. Hip Hop should be exclusive a lot more than what it is, because we end up with shytty actors, and teenys, being singers and rappers, and being classed as Hip Hop (See Drake and Justin Timberlake)
2) This standardised Hip Hop sound that sounds like cheapy 2nd grade horse shit... Think of Fruityloops, but a demo version.... Now think of a cheap imitation of that. That doesn't even go far enough in describing how shyt most of these beats are.
3) No charisma anymore, and certainly no personalitys.... People bang on the 90's, but at least there was variety. Rappers who looked different, sounded differet, flowed different, and even acted different... Too many in the market to choose from, but the problem is, they all sound alike...
4) Every mainstream song seems to sound the same, some Wack slowed down baby rhyming verse, with a dash of auto-tune, and a splash of R&B singer somewhere, with some moron in the backround yelling a pointless "yay........ yay" or a "hay ......... hay" after every line... STFU
5) I don't like the culture of it being driven away and returned with fashion..... It's like it's been kidnapped in the boot of a rusty old 4x4 with an unshaven driver smoking a cigerette, and returned being driven in a pink fluffy seated car, and springing out of the boot like a John Cena, or Cryme Tyme from WWE
-
Son who are u listening to, Young Money? I have no clue what you're talking about. First u said Drake and Justin Timberlake shouldn't be labeled under HipHop (tho I've never heard Timberlake labeled as that) and then u turn around and say there's no diversity. I don't get it, it sounds like abuncha rambling about Young Money and Nicki Minaj.

What do you mean variety? Damn near every rapper that got attention was playing the role of a gangbanger.

Only a small portion of the mainstream was like that. You had Fugees, Will Smith, Nas, and Warren G to name a few in Hip Hop front that were all big commercial stars in the 90's and they all sounded different. Granted Dre, Snoop, and Naughty by Nature may have sounded alike in content, but there were a variety on the mainstream putting out quality product with a different sound. Even if the content was similar in some (a lot of West Coast trying to play the role of gangbanger) their music still sounded different.
You could tell who came from where by lingo, and sound. East, West, South, Mid West, they all had their own sound. Now though too many are sounding like each other, no one can tell who comes from where... Good thing if the music is good, but unfortunately, the mainstream is just bad
Another thing I hate about Hip Hop is: If an underground rapper who hasn't got a deal finds himself a good outlet to promote himself for free (IE: Blogs, youtube, mixtapes, and other ones created later on) the bigger rapper with the big deal, and heaps of sponsorships on him has to come down and take it from them.... I'm sure everyone remembers the tons of Snoop Dogg mixtapes, and 50 Cent mixtapes, and Game mixtapes.... 3 artists, who never needed that kind of outlet, flooded the mixtape scene and took away from the up and comer, and more or less killed the spirit and interest in it. Now all the majors do it

LOL @ 50 cent killing the market. Son, 50 cent CREATED that market. Before 50 mixtapes were always low quality, with tons of throwaway freestyles. 50 came along and made his career and blew up off mixtapes. Now you have mixtapes that are just free albums. The quality has gone up a great ways. Now you have artists building their careers off what used to be a throwaway bonus. 50 created the blueprint for that.

That's one of the reason I was saying it was so limited in the 90s. Especially from the west coast, where every rapper was trying to sound the same. Location shouldn't be pidgeon-holing how an artist should sound. Now you've got all these rappers who don't limit themselves to one sound from a coast, which imo is a great thing. Location is less important now, and why shouldn't it be? Is which side of the U.S. an artist is from important in any other music genres? No. So why do rap fans care?

On that topic, I don't like how rappers are creating album length projects of original beats and rhymes but not calling them albums. Its basically giving them a pass and letting them say "here listen to some music from me and keep me relevant but don't judge me by it."

i hate people complainin about what they dont like about it..
same shit different year...the game is jus over saturated...
same ol..sick of mainstream bullshit..when real lyricist is gettin pouting goin on
every yr its a new rapper that "sells out"...when reality if the shoe was on the other foot..some of the fans would do the same thing to further their paper route
new rapper blow up in the south..its a problem..funny how some country nigga..thats slow..can lyrically put himself...who can become a house hold name...when some of these so call lyricist that " will destroy a rapper" cannot but words together lyrically to make them mainstream...
lol
