FUCK! You don't know how bad I want to be you...I even started listening to Incubus because of you...Please teach me how to be cool.
-
you listen to incubus. step one complete.

They both describe a morality judgement placed on an event. If you say something's awesome, you've judged it as being positive, if you say something's awfull, you've judged it as being negative.

I'd say a Person, Place, Or Thing.
If you say something's awesome, you've judged it as being positive, if you say something's awfull, you've judged it as being negative.
They mean opposite. But if you break both words down, they basically mean that something is "awe inspiring". The english language is a motherfucker.

No, becase "awe" and "aw" mean two different things...Now if it was spelled "Aweful," that would be a different story, but it's not...
If you say something's awesome, you've judged it as being positive, if you say something's awfull, you've judged it as being negative.
Like I said, it's spelled "awful", not "awfull"...
-
Awful is still derived from the word "awe". The "e" is just dropped. Both words mean to inspire awe, just in a different way. :)
-
BTW, the reason it's spelled "awful" and not "awfull" is to keep the 1st syllable stressed. The meaning would be the same as "awfull" if it were to be spelled that way. So Trauma isn't far from being correct.
-
No, you're wrong...
aw:
Interjection
Used 2 express sympathy, tenderness, disapproval, or disbelief.
Abbreviation
awe:
Noun
A mixed emotion of reverence, respect, dread, and wonder inspired by authority, genius, great beauty, sublimity, or might.
-
Yes, but look at this....
Main Entry: awe·some
Pronunciation: 'o-s&m
Function: adjective
Date: 1598
1 : expressive of awe
2 a : inspiring awe <an awesome task> b : TERRIFIC 2, 3; especially : EXTRAORDINARY
Main Entry: aw·ful
Pronunciation: 'o-f&l
Function: adjective
Date: 13th century
1 : inspiring awe
2 : filled with awe: as a : obsolete : AFRAID, TERRIFIED b : deeply respectful or reverential
3 : extremely disagreeable or objectionable
4 : exceedingly great; used as an intensive
So, you're wrong.
-
I'll even go as far to point out that:
awful: 13th century
awe: 13th century
aw: 1852
So how is awful derived from "aw" if the word "aw" wasn't used until 1852? Awful had already been put into use during the 13th century as had the word "awe". I'm sure you're smart enough to make the connection.
