Listening session is now complete.. so I can come back down to Earth now... Great album, about as great as we could hope for from Nas at this stage in his career.

The album reminded me some of Eminem's "The Eminem Show" and let me tell you why.  "The Eminem Show" was a classic album, and this album was not a classic, but possibly a near-classic album.  "The Eminem Show" was fully produced and a very high-quality clean sound to it, with raw lyrics underneathe it.  So the combination of high sounding production with fierce lyricism.   Sort of like mixing Wu-tang with Mozart, not to that level but you get the idea.

Also, the album is a very personal album much like the Eminem Show.  It's a rapper with nothing left to prove, so he turns inward and writes personal narratives almost for self-entertainment.  Stimulating subjects, wide variety of thoughts and ideas expressed.  It's not like his It Was Written album where he stays on one topic (Mafioso) and beats it to death.  It's also not really a concept album like the Nigger album or the Hip-Hop Is Dead album.   It's somewhere in between.  Here's where it ranks compared to the rest of Nas albums.

Illmatic
God's Son
Stillmatic
Hip-Hop Is Dead
Distant Relatives

Life Is Good

It Was Written
Lost Tapes
Nigger
...and the rest (his flops)

Lost Tapes arguably better than Illmatic HHID sucked so did this new album. You didnt even put Streets Disciple his  most mature n underrated album. Your list is all fucked.

Cormega >>> Nas/Gay-Z

Ahhh that was kind of an overly emotional post.  Every winter when I first see the snow on the ground I have to listen to the God's Son album and I remember December 2002 when the album dropped which was a really emotional time for me, and Nas did the album after his mom's passing and it just really connects with me when I'm in that mode.  But most times of the year I would have to admit that Illmatic is clearly the superior album.

Illmatic
God's Son
Stillmatic
Hip-Hop Is Dead
Distant Relatives

Life Is Good

It Was Written
Lost Tapes
Nigger
...and the rest (his flops)

Opinions are opinions. Can't hate, but personally, my Nas list looks like this...

The Lost Tapes
Illmatic
Nigger
Stillmatic
It Was Written
Hip Hop is Dead
God's Son
I Am = Nastradamus
Street's Disciple

Life is Good isn't on there cuz I haven't had a chance to listen. I was gonna download it but I said fuck it ima do this the old fashioned way. I'm gonna buy the deluxe copy tomorrow after work and go for a nice drive by myself to listen to it.

But I gotta say, Nas is officially the single greatest rapper of all time in my opinion. I used to say him and Cube were a toss-up but Cube (much like Snoop and DPG) is ruining his legacy on the tailend of his career with the bullshit he's dropping. Had he just hung it up after Laugh Now, Cry Later, his catalog doesn't look so bad.

These groupies dont know no better. Some were prepared to call this a classic no matter what it sounded like. Last 3 Nas albums have been filled with odd beats and no inspiration. He sounds bored with rap. Hes fallin off and its like people are in denial about it.

Its my opinion at this point Nas has reached the status in hip hop where he can put anything on record and it would be overvalued just cause hes Nas. Its a 6-7/10 album n people are calling it a classic and its far from one. You tellin me he was inspired when the 1st single from HHID was the recycled Thiefs Theme beat off Streets Disciple sped up. BS. None of his last 3 compares to IWW, LT, or Illmatic and Nas has the ability in him to make a straight perfect classic but he puts out mediocre shit wit stale beats and people eat it up. I hope we get LT 2 one day so I can hear a real qb sounding Nas album again.

Dude you couldn't be more backwards. Nas constantly gets shitted on! People are ALWAYS saying "Nas lost", "Nas is done", "Nas lost for signing to Jay", "Nas? Oh the guy paying Kelis' 15k a month". If anything his brilliance gets ignored because people spend so much time bashing him for his personal life. That shit about his beats is such a lameass argument, who the fuck listens to a lyricist for their production? If all you want is bangin beats then go ahead and download some Rick Ross, some Brick Squad, etc etc etc. Truth be told, his beats don't even suck, they're perfect for the sound of his music (very similar to how Joe Budden operates).

Btw: Nas reusing that In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida sample was fly as fuck! Don't front. That was basically Nas sayin 'alright, I fucked up last time, so give me a second chance and watch what I do'.

Bottom line is this, if ANY other rapper recorded an album as good as Life is Good (or Hip Hop is Dead for that matter) people would call it a masterpiece. But since it was released by Mr. Illmatic its just a 7/10 to you.

Sometimes less is more.  A lot of music today is overproduced to the point it's not listenable.  Nas lyrics can carry a track, he doesn't need to have too much going on with the beat.  I will need more listens to know for sure, but it's possible the new album may have been overproduced.

You do know it was both right? or what brian you can't even accept nor allow a dead black guy his choices in his life? Damn why don't you just just dig up tupac give his ass 20 lashings for doing what he did.

Nas & Pac squashed the beef before his death...

It's ironic you can can talk about his production but then big up Lost Tapes when it has some of the blandest production he's ever spit over. People bitch over Nas no matter what he puts out.

Youre out of your mind. LT was solid beatwise and lyrically right there wit Illmatic. Purple better than anything on Life Is Good.

LOL The fact that a Frank Ocean fan likes this album lets me know Im on the right sideof this argument. I remember when I was a deluded Nas fan so glad I grew up and out of that phase. Mega > Nas. Now I feel like hearin some classic qb hip hop gonna throw on Born N Raised and roll up this sour. Dont like it fuck yourself.

Like I said, go bump some T.I.

Your opinion couldn't be more worthless.

Rather hear a rejuvenated rapper in his prime than an attention seeking homo

LMAO @ the thought of Cormega being better than Nas....ever.

Take Nas dick out your ear. You sound like my boy n I tell him that all the time. We argue whos better but I always win because Ive heard Nas n Megas entire catalogs whereas he like most Nas diehards refuse to listen to Cormega cause of him n Nas past beefs. Only thing Nas got over him is album quantity and mainstream appeal. Skillwise I admit he got a better flow than Mega thats it tho. Megas been consistent never changed or watered down his shit. Better beats better lyrics wit 100% realness.

You cant name a Cormega song worse than You Owe Me. You cant list a Cormega album as wack as Nastradamus or Untitled.

Mood Muzik 2,3,4, Halfway House, Padded Room, Escape Route >>>>>> T.I.'s career.

Joe is so much better than T.I. it actually makes Nas & Cormega seem like a tie lmao.

& Wale in my sig & Chamillionaire in my name just goes to show I'm not biased against the South, T.I. just ain't that great. He can spit here & there; hasn't held an album down since King.

How the fuck is Untitled wack? World Go Around was the ONLY wack song. Ya'll My Niggas, Breathe, We're Not Alone, Sly Fox, Louis Farrakhan > any of Cornmega's flops.
