'Black Vikings' makes me want to march and swing an axe.

There's a Goonies tribute on here wtf? Cool.

Technique carry's on from where he left off a few years ago, which is a good thang.

Review: Immortal Technique – The Martyr (2011)

Immortal Technique, stage name of Peruvian born Felipe Andres Coronel, released his new album “The Martyr”, completely free to download yesterday.

Needless to say, I have had it on loop since last night and my immediate impression of it is that it is a work of incredible commitment by a workaholic independent MC who was raised in Harlem, New York, and became politicised from an early age.

Immortal Technique (IT) has always written provocative lyrics with themes ranging from the institutional racism embedded within capitalism, the injustices of globalisation, corporate greed, censorship, and oppression.

What is apparent in this new effort is the broadening of approach in handling the often very polemical content in the verses. The album also features notable artists such as Dead Prez, Vinnie Paz (of Jedi Mind Trick’s fame), Brother Ali with even Chuck D (Public Enemy) making an appearance among others.

The album opens with an interlude which calls for you to “burn this for every motherfucker you know”. After all, its free. The idea here, which has been muddled as of late in hip hop, is that the message has become so muted, it is more important than the money, it has gone beyond it and travelled full circle (because lets face it, with record labels now manufacturing “the best rappers” around, the culture of hip hop has largely changed through the lens of public life into a pseudo-culture dominated by braggers). As veteran MC RA the Rugged Man once said, “you’re only as successful as how much they spend on you”. Immortal Technique has rejected that artificial dependency and sought ways around it.

“I need you to think for you and stop being a servant”

The title track, “The Martyr”, then opens with the IT almost picking up from where he left off in his last offering “The 3rd World”, almost challenging the beat to outdo him and his poignant lyricism – something rather unique to IT and his work. Whereas a lot of MCs overlay their verses on a beat which seem largely divorced from the lyrical material, there is a genuine sense that the two are conjoined in IT’s work. This is especially apparent as the album continues with the melancholic “Angels & Demons”, featuring infamous rap duo Dead Prez.

Following this, a definite stand-out track begins: “Rich Man’s World (1%)”. This has taken the Twittersphere by storm, and rightly so. Never has a more cynical (and believe me, its cynical) and comical (he has sampled ABBA’s “Money Money Money” in it) exposition of the so called “1%” and their lifestyle been made before. In this track more than anywhere else, IT truly demonstrates that, while lyrically driven, he certainly has the technique to relay the content given all of the rhyme structures and effective time-lapsing.

“[…] only little people pay all these taxes and fees / since you were born we control what you watch and you read / and pretty soon we’re gonna own the fucking air that you breathe / I take what I want – fucker – I don’t have to say please / I convince you that its good for you / take it and leave / you think presidents are the face of a nation? / I put them all where they are / end of the conversation”

“Toast to the Dead”, a late and great J Dilla production, is a solid track quite reminiscent of IT’s work on Revolutionary Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, taking on the form of an inward reflection of defiance and struggle, but ultimately resilience.

Sure to be another fan favourite, “Goonies Never Die”, then begins with a playful beat sampling the memorable film’s theme. Adopting a similar kind of tone to “Rich Man’s World”, this song trumpets along pleasantly into the more pensive yet uplifting “Natural Beauty”.

The mood suddenly changes in “Civil War”. If hip hop could make you march, this could be the song. A heavily political diatribe against the assumptions and preconceptions we have in our society which keep us divided along artificial lines, distracting us from the dividers at the top who prosper because of it.

“[…] I never hate on the south / I respect their vision / I just hate on niggas that promote samboism / and white execs that love to see us in that position / they reflect the stereotypes of America’s vision / they want dancing cooning and hollering / only respect us for playing sports and modelling / modern racism? / its stay in your place-ism / while people trapped in practical black face-ism / so fuck a civil war between the north and the south / its between field niggas and slaves that are stuck in the house”

Sandwiched between probably my least favourite tracks, “Mark of the Beast” and “Young Lords”, “Black Vikings” explodes in all of its confrontational glory, challenging the listener to first bear the sonic assault before actually revelling in its aggression and energy. If “Civil War” made you march, this track will surely make you join the vanguard.

“We may not run America, but we make America run”

The penultimate track “Ultimas Palabras” (“Last Words”) has been stylised as a public speech. Departing from a similar track of IT’s, “The Poverty of Philosophy” where IT overlayed his spoken words over an accommodative beat, “Ultimas Palabras” has an audible audience. It is another act of trying to eloquently raise awareness about the corrupt elite in politics and business, ending with a rather dramatic conclusion, and opening into what IT described as his favourite track on Twitter: “Sign of the Times”. Its understandable to see why.

This track is simply an incredible piece of music. Fusing cultural melodies and instruments together with the most passionate and concise I have ever heard IT probably since the title of track of “The 3rd World”.

It would have been fantastic to hear renowned MCs such as Chino XL and Canibus on the album, but that is a juvenile gripe of mine as a fan wishing to play fantasy rap.

Despite the numerous MCs featured, the best thing about this album is Immortal Technique himself – this is a trend true of all the best MCs. It is visible to see how he has managed to refine his MCing skills as well as taking on melodies and beats which, even more than before, compliment the lyrical content. The album itself could not be more timely either, with occupations around the world raising awareness and protesting against growing inequalities, corporate greed, and how the “1%” are living ever more lavish lives, often at our expense. It will certainly resonate.

Some critics claim his material is too monotonous, convoluted and bordering, if not completely espousing, conspiracy theory. Yet, with powerful and effective aphoristic lines such as “live for revolution, instead of always dying for it”, I think it is safe to say the message has developed and matured into something which has become more tangible and accessible. The message isn’t stylised as one man against the odds we should cheer on, it is a metaphorical call to arms.

Immortal Technique, unlike many other MCs who are obsessed with reinventing themselves to energise marketing campaigns, finds his niche impersonally – a welcome and rare thing in modern hip hop.

Good to see something new from him. I hope he does some song themes than the usual though

I've always found this to be the dumbest complaint of the Internet era. You never heard people back in the day say" hey too shorts good but he's starting to pidgeon hole himself with this sex stuff, I'd like to hear him switch it up" like WTF? Why?

Immortal techniques is who he is, why pull complaints out of thin air? People that say these things are people that just like to bitch, and if theirs nothing wrong with the music they just  say shit like this. Nobody wants to hear technique making trap music or club records. And nobody wants to hear waka flocka talking about politics. They fill their lane and do what their good at. You want something else go listen to someone else. Rap is full of niche rappers that stay in their lane for a reason. The genre is so large and diverse that complaints such as this are just hollow and pointless.

This album is crack, fuck the new Drake/Wale/etc. albums.

I deleted the skits/intros to most of the songs, makes the album sound more cohesive and easier to listen to.

Added "The Next ft Talib Kweli & Immortal Technique-This American Life" and "Immortal Technique Ft. Diabolic-Frontlines" as bonus tracks..  8)

Certainly not, I have no intentions of listening to filler cuts, boring/unnecessary skits, and wack features, when I can remove redundant stuff and replace/complement them with (very often) superior leftovers/bonus tracks.
Who bumps skits/movie excerpts in their car anyway?

Customization ftw!

An album is what the artist makes. The Martyr is the entire project that Tech released. Seems pretty stupid to go about trying to recreate a custom version of an official release when what you should be doing is making a playlist.
Title: Re: New free album from Immortal Technique coming on October 27th
Post by: Jome on November 10, 2011, 07:22:10 AM
So if I call it a playlist, it's ok with you?  :P Doesn't matter if you call it an album or a playlist..
A perfect example is the clusterfuck R.E.D. album by Game.. you'd be a damn fool not to make your own custom version of that watered down album.
Remove Lil Wayne, Drake, Young Jeezy, Mario, Wale, etc. and replace them with some of the 20-something superior leftovers, and you suddenly got a decent album.. or did I hurt Game's artistic integrity by doing so?

What seems stupid to me however, is putting 30 sec. to 2 minute skits IN FRONT of the actual songs.. sure, it's meant to tell a story and set the mood, whatever, but I'm not interested in hearing somebody speak for the first minute of every track I put on, it gets extremely tiring after hearing the message more than 2 times.. put it at the end of the track, and the skip-button will make sure that you skip to actual music, not another movie excerpt.

Your mentality reminds me of the Apple-philosophy.. I don't want an Apple-permission to change my wallpaper, tell me where to buy my music, which programs to use, and what I can do with my phone.. that's why I got Android.

Its an album bro. Its their vision, not yours. Those Game "leftovers" are songs on official mixtapes. I don't see how editing tracklistings is going to do anything but confuse you and everyone else. What are you going to do when you're talking with friends about R.E.D. and you go "that album is classic, Monsters in my Head and The Kill are the best songs!" People are gonna be laughing at you for not knowing shit. The apple comparison isn't valid. A more proper comparison is owning a famous painting then painting over parts of it. You can customize your iphone, its still just a phone that you can do whatever you want with. You customize an artist's album and now its your album, not theirs. Just accept that Game and others put out wack albums occasionally. Otherwise years from now we're going to be discussing the greatest albums ever made and laughing at you when you bring up R.E.D.

Fuck their vision, if somebody wants to cater to the MTV-audience and stick all sorts of garbage features on their album, plus numerous redundant skits, I'm making my own version.
And for the record, I don't have Alzheimers, so I will always remember the original R.E.D. album as coaster-status, if you're concerned about mixing the original version with your own customized version, don't make one, simple as.

When I update my Ipod with my own customized version, you're damn straight it's my album and my vision, I didn't make the music, I just improved their vision and selection shortcomings.
I also use MediaMonkey to update my Ipod, even though Apple wants people to use Itunes and have tried to block 3rd-party programs from accessing Ipods/Iphones/etc. Am I wrong for that?

lol jome just tryna feel at comfort with his music. Dude mad rigid at times with his music taste but y'all coming on dude too strong just for him changing shit up to make his playlist less skippable. I def agree with spice, if you listening to an album, i don't understand why y'all would cut out even skits and def features etc..btw lil wayne feature on games albums have always been dope, even on this...but i know jome seriously cannot stand lil wayne if im correct so maybe thats why he takes his feature off but in general if y'all cutting parts of tracks now or jus gettin rid of tracks cuz of a certain cat being on it...seems a little gay to me but to each his own. If jome wanna listen music in his own 'vision' so be it. lol...

i just usually gotta favourites list on my playlists of tracks i be checking more often but i always keep the album in their actual vision. Whether they be dope or wack, thats part of the package  lol. Thats why a nigga never listens to any banks shit, cuz his albums are garbage an dude sound the same pretty much all the time. Games new album too aint really getting much check at all but he still on my playlist cuz dude got some heat from a while back whereas i got no banks albums on my shit cuz dude garbage whereas with game while i dont be checking on RED, i got still got some joints from that album on my playlist.

I'm assuming you do this for every album you have. How do you remember original tracklistings of every album in your collection? The way people remember tracklistings is by listening to albums over and over.

Seems like you misunderstood the whole intent.. let me break it down for you.

* No, not every album needs to be customized, some albums are fine to begin with.. the majority of albums I do nothing with, some I just add some Itunes/Bestbuy bonus tracks to, possibly a leftover or a mixtape-track good enough to be on the album.
* Why do I need to remember tracklistings? If I 5 years later have forgot a mainstream pop-track featuring Chris Brown or Lil Wayne, and only remember the leftover-track with Busta Rhymes & Cee-Lo (to use a recent example), why would anybody care? (Except to cheer at the phenomenal raise in quality..) A couple of tracks less to skip..

You have to accept an album for what it is. If you don't like certain songs why not just not add them to your ipod like everyone else?

No, I really don't.
If I want to remove skits, sellout-tracks, wack features and filler, then it is entirely up to me, and you're right, I don't add them to my Ipod, like everyone else..

Now, if you want to respect the artists vision (or say, the record labels PR-campaign vision), and listen through tons of random artist placements and tracks catered at the 14 year old female radio listener, then that is also up to you.
Then you need not worrying about "forgetting" the tracklisting and the artists original vision, and you can enter arguments/discussions about this very album for years to come, oh joy.

Is that really your main concern? Forgetting which tracks were on the album? Worrying about mentioning the wrong track and that people will laugh at you when you accidentally mention a leftover that were supposed to be on the album?
Surrounding yourself with superficial teenagers much?

What's the difference between your fake tracklistings and the fake shit that radiotube posts? Both are equally corny. And why wouldn't you want your songs to be labelled correctly?

If you can not see the difference between made-up fantasy tracklists and tracks that actually exist and have actually been released (and most often, actually intended for the album, but then replaced by some label A/R who didn't think the track was radio-friendly enough), then you got issues..
Not that there's something wrong with making fantasy tracklists, imagining how your favorite artists album would look like in a dream world.. if people have that much spare-time, why judge?

LoL @ ADHD..
Obviously I'm not gonna remove tracks that I don't like on the first couple of listens, or tracks that are simply average.. average tracks have grown on me before, you're right about that.

But some tracks are just pure garbage, and serve no purpose what-so-ever.. it's not like I'm throwing grower-music in the recycle bin.

lol jome just tryna feel at comfort with his music. Dude mad rigid at times with his music taste but y'all coming on dude too strong just for him changing shit up to make his playlist less skippable. Yeah, a Lil Wayne feature can destroy a whole track, but I still keep the "Martians vs. Goblins" track, even though he did his best to ruin an otherwise dope track.
And it seems like you pretty much agree with me, but don't have the time or is too lazy to make your own version of the album, lol..

I mean, Game released 1 album, and what, 2-4 mixtapes, plus 30-40++ leftovers leaked?
Instead of jumping from listening through the album and numerous mixtapes, plus all the leaked leftovers back and forth, why not collect all the best tracks in 1 folder? (They're all from the same studio sessions anyway)
If you call it an album or a playlist, who the F cares? I know Spice is afraid the music police will come knocking on his door, asking why he put non-album material on the album though..
