Baseball - Dodgers in the late 80s/early 90s. Twins & Blue Jays in the around 91, 92 when I started playing baseball. Braves & Indians most of the 90s after that.

Boxing - Corrales until he died. Now I don't have a favorite fighter.
Basketball - Clippers
Football - Pats, Jets & Colts

I liked wrestling (it wasn't my favorite, though) back in the day, but when I found out it was all fake and bullshit, my interest faded.

Football has always been my favorite sport

Simple. As you grow, your tastes grow. So, instead of liking teams for being from my hometown, I liked teams for their talent or I liked teams for certain players. Now, my teams are pretty consistent. I've liked the Clippers, Yanks, Pats, Jets and Colts since High School.

Wrong... As usual.

I became a Pats fan in like 1991 or 1992. Marshall Faulk was my favorite RB from like 95 to 97, thats when I started liking the Colts. I remember I was pissed when he ended up on the Rams. And around 98 when the Jets picked up Martin, I followed them heavily.

I liked the Bulls as Jordan was my second favorite player growing up, Magic being my "official" favorite retiring, Big Game having all kinds of injuries... the Lakers had nothing that really interested me. So the Bulls moved up. I started liking Hakeem, so I started liking the Rockets around 92/93. I also liked the Clippers around 91 or so. And when Larry Johnson came in the league, I started following the Hornets.

It just so happened that the same years the Twins and Blue Jays won the World Series' I had been playing on little league teams under the same names. I wanted them to do good cuz I thought it would make my teams do good. LOL. My teams sucked, but pro teams did well. Once I stopped playing for the Blue Jays I discovered the Braves in 93 cuz of Glavine, Smotz and Maddux. And the Indians were dope to me in about 1995 when they had Thome, Hershiser, Ramirez and some other cats. The Yanks became my team after I graduated High School. Like summer of 02.

Bandwagoners are more like the people who put up their Laker flags on their car the moment the Lakers are in the Playoffs and shit. I not a fan boy. If I don't like something I move on. I don't get attached.

Dude...a bandwaggon fan is a person who jumps from team to team. How can you deny it?

SGV can find a way to argue ANYTHING.
Title: Re: What was your favorite sport growing up and has it changed?
Post by: SGV on January 12, 2008, 01:30:50 AM
Uh... Cuz a bandwagon fan is someone who becomes a fan of a team because that team is doing good.

Why would someone be a bandwagon fan of the Clippers in 1991? What was to bandwagon there? LOL.
Title: Re: What was your favorite sport growing up and has it changed?
Post by: Now_Im_Not_Banned on January 12, 2008, 02:12:01 AM
to me, anyone who jumps from team to team is a bandwagon fan. unfortunately for you, you chose to jump on a dirty wagon with missing wheels.
Title: Re: What was your favorite sport growing up and has it changed?
Post by: SGV on January 12, 2008, 02:15:09 AM
And to me and so many others a bandwagon fan is someone who all of a sudden becomes a fan of a team that's doing good at the current time. But, of course, you'll never realize that you were wrong.
Title: Re: What was your favorite sport growing up and has it changed?

So a team as a whole has to do good to jump on their bandwagon? if one player is enough reason for you to jump boats, that doesn't make it any less bandwagon. like I said, you just chose a shitty wagon, that's all.

Uh... Well... Yeah. The point of jumping on a bandwagon is to be apart of what's popular or successful.

I used to be a big fan of West Coast Hip Hop. I thought there was nothing better. But, much like with Sports, when you grow up, your tastes tend to grow. I discover new things and new teams and my focus begins to shift. Doesn't mean I'm bandwagoning, means I like something new. Once I lose interest in something, I'm not going to sit there and force myself to like it. I move on. You should try it one day. Again, you're still wrong.

As a lil kid :

1. Football (Soccer) - Manchester United
2. Ice Hockey
3. Basketball
4. American Football

NOW :

1. Football (Soccer) - Manchester United
2. Basketball
3. Ice Hockey

I have lost interest to american football and Ice Hockey is also losing it's interest, basketball has stayed the same for me so it's now number two on my list...

well...like if you don't have a team that you passionately cheer for, then, in my opinion, it's okay to jump from team to team ( like I have with nhl and nba teams)....but in football, I have always been a MAN United fan and that won't ever change  8) and if in that situation you change a team that you cheer for, then you really havent' been a true fan...

But Teams change. I was a big Bills fan growing up. I loved te no huddle fast play explosive offense and quick push pass defense. I was a huge Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, Bruce Smith  Phil Hansen, Andre Reed, Don Beebe, and Cornelius Bennet fan. When they all left I stuck around for a bit to see what Flutie could do but when they benched him they became a completely different team. I wanted my old Bills back and I found them in Indianapolis. Bill Polian the GM of the Bills back in the day went to Indy and rebuilt a similar team. A no huddle QB that calls the plays on the field, a strong and fast RB, a quick slot WR, a great deep WR etc. Kelly, Thomas, Smith, Hansen, Reed, Beebe and Bennet became Manning, James, Freeney, Mathis, Harrison, Stokely/Clark, and Sanders.

What do I owe to the city of Buffalo? I'm not from there. And the city I am from, Toronto, will never get a cheer from me for any sports team. I've always rooted against TO teams.

So if Kobe and your favourite Lakers all jumped ship to a new city and the current Lakers made no effort to build a competitive team you wouldn't even dream of cheering for Kobe and the boys when they come to town? I'm a fan of the sport and the athletes I like, not a fan of a bunch of asshole fat cat white guys who own a team in my city because daddy left them a bundle in the will. The point is I cannot support a team I don't agree with. If I don't like the style of play I don't support it. I'm Canadian and grew up in Canada but every time over the past 2 decades (not so much lately because I don't watch much anymore) when Team Canada played Team Russia or USSR I cheered for the Soviets. I have no ties to Russia. I hate communism but they played a style of game I preferred and I wanted that style of play to win out in the end. I don't like Canadian Hockey as much and I never will. I was a big Red Wings fan in the 90s because of that, and I never cheered for the Leafs over the Wings. But if the Wings had traded away all their Soviet players and and went a hard edged rough and tough checking team I'd drop them in a second.

I treat sports like poltics. I'll vote Conservative if the party really is conservative, not because they call themselves the conservative party. If they don't have the policies I like I'll find a party that does. I won't stick with it out of loyalty.

1) I don't believe you.

2) I don't support home teams because they aren't home teams. If pro athletes had to play from the towns they were from and all the Toronto teams had Toronto players I'd understand loyalty I'd even root for them just because they are from where I am from. But only so much.

I don't understand the idea of supprting a team just because you were born in the city they play in. You wold have to draw the line somewhere right? If the Lakers were bought by a white supremist and had a team of only aryan players and dedicated every win to White Power surely you'd catch a Clipper game or two. Right?

IMO, fans mean just as much to the team as the players/management do. As long as nothing extreme happens, like white supremists taking over your team and restricting the roster to aryan players, I don't see why you'd switch teams.

It's a whole differnt thing between me and you though. You live in LA. It's your home town team (at least it says so in your sig). I've never cheered for the home town team to begin with. It's a lot easier to be more loyal to players rather than teams when you have no actual connection to the city. When the Dodgers went to LA there were a lot of kids from Brooklyn that wanted nothing to do with the new Dodgers and I can see why but why would a Dodgers fan from Cleveland care if they play in New York or California. I've followed certain players from team to team, or certain coaches or whatever. I still cheer for the Bills and always have, and always will but I still wanted to see Flutie do well so I cheered for him as well and when Flutie came back and beat Buffalo I cheered because I wanted him to win, but I also wanted everyone responsible for keping Johnson instead of Flutie fired and fired immediately because they were idiots and they hurt my team.

In Toronto the the Leafs are owned by the Teachers Union more or less. The union doesn't give a shit if the team loses or not. They just care about the bottom line. In the 80s it was even worse. They had an owner that would constantly trade away the best players when their prices went up just to save money. Many of these players were Toronto boys from birth. When asked about it he basically said when the players get trade we still sell out. When the prices go up we still sell out. When we don't come near the playoffs we still sell out. The fans were so stupid to continue to support the team that wouldn't support them that the whole damn thing suffered. I was never a Leafs fan so I didn't care, but if I was I'd gladly refuse all support until something was done in a positive direction. I call that caring more for a team than just blindly following it when the team keeps fucking you over.

3. Hockey - Leafs & Sharks; Baseball - Jays & Yankees

don't watch hockey and baseball too much anymore; i do check it here & there though, check standings and watch during the playoffs.

Being a leafs fan...i dont blame you

Hockey

Hockey

yeah, the whole organization is fucked up.

we need to get the board out of most decisions, and then replace Ferguson with a competent GM.

ah well, go Sharks! lol.

I support my home teams, why, i dunno, cause i love philadelphia, when i was younger maybe like 13 years ago my 1st best friend was a huge dallas fan and i loved them (he got me into football) and i was a fan for like 5 years, then i took a break from football, and when i started watching again several years ago, i was no longer interested in dalls, (no irving, aikman, smith, dion, etc.), so i started rooting for the eagles, and i love the eagles, they upset me a lot, but a lot of things i love about the team. Ive liked the phillies always but im not a huge baseball fan, and i did like that russian red wings team, and that hasek buffallo team, but ill still always like flyers best. I think its more of pride for my city but i like the teams. I also have like 2nd favs that are not my city team, like boston in baseball, and green bay in football, but  philly teams always come first, even if i move.

Now here's the million dollar question; if the Superbowl between Philly who had no players actually from Philly vs let's say The Steelers who had 30 of the 40 starters hometown Philly boys born and raised, who would you cheer for? Who would the fans of Philly cheer for?

As for me in general; Most people have a tendency to root for their home town. It seeps into their brain that way.I have a tendency to go against the grain. I do it in a lot of areas in life. As a kid in the 80s the Jays sucked but they were the home team. I loved the Jays. They lost. I cheered. They still lost. I still cheered. Fred McGriff was my favourite. They traded McGriff. I didn't like that but I still tried to cheer as hard as ever. Not many others in school liked them much and I didn't like that either. Then it happened; We win the damn pennant (or tie for it anyway), and all of a sudden we beat Oakland in the AL Finals. It wasn't so bad the year before because we lost in the AL Finals but now we we're going to the World Series and all these fuck head bandwagon jumping pussies started showing up out of the wood work. Go Jays Go. Bullshit. They didn't have any sky blue old jerseys. They didn't have years worth of cards (every player that ever played on the team) but they were now cheering. As their cheers grew louder mine went softer. They took away my joy with their fake cheers that weren't there a few years before that. I wasn't even happy the Jays the won. It continued even stronger the next year, and I was the only kid in the classroom, the school, with a Phillies hat and a Lenny Dykstra t-shirt. I decided then and their I would not stand with these phonies in my class. They laughed and laughed at me when the Jays won again but they could never tell me what Jimmy Key's era was, or who played first base before Johnny Olerud. They didn't even know who George Bell was. Even As a I cheered against them I knew more about the Jays than any other kid in that school.

I guess it stuck. Kelly was a call his own plays QB when no other QB really was so I cheered for him. Same reason I cheer for Manning, and Flutie when he was in the CFL. I'll cheer for a pocket passer black QB, and a scrambling white QB. If an all white defensive backfield ever came about I'd cheer for that too. Or a black place kicker. I ever see a Chinese RB I'll go nuts for him. If it's different and challenges the norm I'll give a round of applause. Just the way I am I guess.

The team that reps and plays for your city, obviously...

So you turned on your team because of a bunch of bandwagon fags? See, I don't get that. The fact that you were a real fan from day one and cheered through all the rain shoulda' made it that much sweeter for you when your team actually started their reign. And the fact that all these bandwagon kids started cheering shoulda' made you feel proud to be on of the few real fans. Instead, you turn on your team for somethin they had no control over? I don't get this logic.

The rain? I cheer for my teams in tough times. The second the Jays started losing all their fans again I started buying tickets and watching games. It's just the way I am.

I'd rather cheer for a team of my people than a team from my city filled with no one from it. It's not like they chose not to play for their home town. What if you made it to the league and wanted to be a Laker but got signed by Suns and had to play with two time MVP Steve Nash? Would you just give up on all things Lakers? What if you moved to another city for a job and had kids? Would you raise them as Laker fans or fans of the city they live in?

I'll always be a Laker fan, as I'll always rep LA. Being a player and being a fan is two completely different things. Terrible analogy.

How so? If you play for a team aren't you by default a fan of that team regardless of what your childhood team may have been. Granted you'll never make the NBA but hypothetically if you did and you played for the Suns your whole career of 18 years or so you'd end up a Suns fan to some extent when you retired, and you'd certainly cheer for that team if you're injured and waiting to come back. But you could still have a place in your heart for the home team. I refuse to believe you'd decline signing to any team outside the Lakers.

And your kids? I'd raise my kids to follow the teams I follow. They can change and follow who they want but I'd make the attempt. Would you raise your kids as Laker fans if you lived in Chicago or would you insist they becme Bulls fans out of principle.

On a side note, it's very easy for me to hate TO teams because I hate this city to begin with. Maybe if I loved Toronto more I'd like the teams more.

^ I think its cause i love philly , that i love sports teams, as as for your hypothetical question, it varies, if westbrook were to get traded, id be a fan of his anywere, same with dawkins, and a couple others, shit, id even cheer mcnabb on another team, id be happier with him doing better on another team then him doing shitty in philly

I've always been a fan of the Bay Area teams, the 49ers, Giants, Warriors, and Sharks. I also like to see the A's, Raiders, and Kings do well, but my favorites are set. Bandwagon fans are annoying, but it's how it goes. There are a lot of players that I really like though, whether they are local athletes or just admiring their game or how they play, so I root for them and like to see them do well, unless they are against my team.

You're right...I'll always have a place in my heart for the Lakers, even if I was to make the NBA and get drafted by another team. but when you're competing and trying to make a living, it's something completely different. I wouldn't restrict myself to only signing/playing with the Lakers if I were a player, cuz that would be retarded. being a fan is not the same as being a player. If I moved to Chicago with my kids, I would cheer for the Lakers in hopes that my kids follow in my footsteps and carry on the LA tradition, but I wouldn't force it upon them or restrict them to only being a Laker fan. LOL. In the end, it'll be their decision. But nothing would stop the Lakers from being my team for life...PeACe
