Title: 80s buzzer beater I can't remember
Post by: Shallow on March 21, 2011, 05:11:12 PM
For some reason my memory tells me it was the Celtics over the 6ers or the Rockets. Whatever it was, or whoever it was it, it was a last second 3-point volley for the win. It gets inbounded to the player with no time left at all really and the guy knows this and doesn't even set for a shot, he just literally volleys it and it goes in for the win. I'm almost positive it was a playoff game, with maybe even the series on the line, but I don't think it was the finals.

Any ideas?

C'mon, nobody? It was a famous play, I'm just going through a brain freeze with it.

yea...sounds like somethin u dreamt up to me. either that, or it's some hidden highlight that they've been keepin away from the public for some strange reason. either way, i've never seen this one and i've seen tons of 80's footage in my day. good luck finding it.

My memory of watching it on ESPN Classic is so vivid though. I remember thinking if not for that insanely lucky play said team wouldn't have won the finals that year. But the fact that everyone here doesn't know anything about it is really making me doubt my memory, especially if it was an in the face of elimination game winning shot.

It was an inbound volley to a player who just tosses it up.  Besides the teams he described this play perfectly.

That's the play. Thanks. Not a 3 pointer, not the Celtics, not a come from behind shot, and not a game 7. I guess if it did have all those things it would have been THE greatest moment, rather than #11, but it's exactly the play I saw in my head. I got the Rockets part right though, even though I wasn't sure if it was the 6ers or not.

Still a nasty shot to end a WCF.  Unfortunately his career was cut short by injuries.

yea, this is probably the only volley game winner in playoff history...possibly the biggest heartbreaker ever for the lakers. i was actually thinkin of this play when u said it was a volley, but the teams and three point aspect threw me off. lucky ass shot, though.. could very well single handedly be the reason lakers won 5 rings instead 6 back n the 60's

I had only thought of the shot because I was talking about how stupid things that no one can control can be the difference between dynasties and forgotten years. It was the Horry shot against Sacramento that made the difference between back to back great team and 3-peat dynasty. Divac just had to hold on to the ball or at at least look before he tossed it and no big shot bob to save the day.

For the record I remember that moment vividly and I was cheering the whole time.

And if there was replay, Samaki Walkers three at the end of the half wouldn't have counted.  Sports is full of the what ifs and shoulda beens.
