Title: Underrated westcoast albums and your personal classics!
Post by: samutahjazz on March 29, 2011, 09:09:51 PM

What are some of your favorite westcoast albums that you think are overlooked and underrated? personal classics? dont forget to write a little explanation for each album..

heres my list, no particular order...

Daz- only on the left side.   This one had super dope production most of the way thru, i really like it cause of the ultra bass heavy traccs for my subs (this is how we do it, do your thang) and that track with kurupt, thiz ihow we live, classic cali production. also like the other features a lot, obie trice surprised me. i saw it everywhere the week it came out so it must have got pretty good distribution, just never hear it talked about that much.

RBX- Broken silence.   X did a more"hip hop" style rather than g-funk west coast album here, i onlly disliked a couple tracks (bounce to this, fiya) but it does include a few west sounding bangers like the snoop produced "overdue". The collabos were kinda strange but they work. never thought x would work with ariano and lmno. that rhettmetic produced posse cut "stop that" has such a dope sample. check out the album if you havent yet, i know it got overlooked.

Cold 187um- Executive decisions.  Just picked this up. so dope. only one song i skip (do you know) Above the law does not get enough love on this forum i wish they were mentioned more. such dope production on this and i like how 187um gives other producers some shine on his album to change thigs up a little. Never heard or knew about the xzibit verse til i listened to this!!

Roscoe- i luv cali.    i skip a few songs but in all i love this album!! perfect for summertime, fingazz laced this shit!!! get high like an eagle, flip flop, easy come easy go are so fucin smooth. its rediculous how much hate this album gets, even roscoe hates it. production and lyrics are fire on almost every track. i listen to this a lot more than philifornia, best roscoe project imo.

Sir Jinx- Deez Dayz (chastisment).  Has anyone but me heard this?? Dude is dre's cousin i never hear about this guy other than his production for cube and kool g rap. The Bob dylan/ jimmy hendrix all along the watchtower sample and the drums on the last track "Power to the people",  are so sick. go give this album a listen, its nice.

11/5- Fiendin for the funk.  Found this at a record shop in downtown bozeman montana of all places. bangs start to finish. the groups best effort by far imo. production is some of the best g funk i have ever heard.

some others off the top are- MC ren shock of the hour ( mr. fuckup stays in heavy rotation for me) RBL posse- an eye for an eye ( best production of any rbl album rip mr. cee) and Black c - the city of gods (Best westcoast album of the last 5 years)

what are some others and what are your personal classics that dont get talked about enough..?

BG Knocc out & Gangsta Dresta - Real Brothas

Even though these guys were signed to Def Jam, they still got treated like artists on Ruthless therefore got thrown into the whole forgotten era of the good shit that came out from that era i.e. Blood of Abraham, Yomo & Maulkie and Tab & Da Villon.
The album is a straight West coast classic. There is only a couple songs I skip such as:
"Whose the G"
"BG Knocc Out"
"Life's A Puzzle"

Brotha Lynch Hung - 24 Deep/Season of Da Siccness

Need I say more? Standout tracks like:
"Jackin 4 Joints"
"Had 2 Gat Ya"
"Return of Da Baby Killa"
"Rest in Piss"
"Sicc Made"

The Twinz - Conversation
No matter if you love the West Coast or not, this album goes hard and any person I play "Eastside LB", "Jump Ta This" or "Round & Round" to, they ask for a copy of the CD. A G Funk classic where Warren is really showin off. And so he should.

I'm gonna check out all the other albums mentioned on this thread  8)

DAMU Ridas - How Deep Is Your Hood

Standout tracks:
"104% No Kut"
"I Aint From Afrika"
"Get Yo Money"
"Is Ya Bang'n or What?"

After this I became a Lil Hawk fan. Dude is fucking crazy on the mic and the track "2 Famous Dogs" released on another Bloods album is a banger.
This album would make anyone want to bang.

The DOC- Helter skelter- So sick, Eroticd's tracks are all super dope but he really goes in on this release. all the tracks are dope, especially da hearafter, return of the livin dead and from ruthless to deathrow. i also highly recommend the ep that cmae out before the album called return of the living dead. it has a couple super dope remixes imo both remixes arwe better than the og's. and i can imagine dre ripping these lyrics doc is spitting next to ice cube. highly slept on.

Foesum - Perfection

The whole album is banging. The beats are flawless, and i love the sound. They are not the most complex rappers, but there style fits the beats very well. The whole album is laid back and a real summer album.
Standout tracks :
- Don`t Get It Twisted(Sick whistle, great talkbox)
- The Ultimate Collaboration (Ft The Twinz)
- Listen To The Sound
- Whowhouldofevathought
- In The Wind

G&D(Dudley Perkins & Georgia Anne Muldrow) - SomeOthaShip

Wow, this album is just crazy. A modern classic in my opinion. Dudley Aka Declaime and Georgia is a perfect match and this album is, as the title sugest, funked up. A bit strange, but i like that. Declaime delivers some great verses, and Georgia sings with both soul and passion. The beats are just brilliant. These to artists are so complex and there styke is so diverse.
Stand out tracks :
- Shine On
- Connect Game
- Endure
- FOnk 4 U
- Boogie

Havoc & Prodeje - Kickin`Game
A real westcoast gangsta rap album. The beats are real smooth and L.V is heavily futured on the album to bring these smooth hooks. The topics are mainly the same, bitches, how hard life is and gangbaning, but that what you expect from these guys. Also a real summer album, whit a laid back vibe. Both Havoc and Prodeje fits the beats perfectly whit there laid back flow.
Stand out tracks :
- Kickin`Game (Ft L.V)
- Charge It 2 A Bitch (Ft L.V)
- 2 G R Not 2 G (Ft L.V)
- C U When U Get Out (Ft L.V)

Kokane - Back 2 Tha Clap
Someone said "funk upon a rhyme" and that is one of my favourite album of all times, but "Back 2 Tha Clap" was way overlooked. It had some great funky beats and Kokane was realy on. Great futures also. As always he brings the funk hard, and got some slow songs where his voice realy shines. Kokane generaly dont get even half the atention and respect he deserves.
Stand out tracks :
- Back 2 The Clap
- Sucka Sandwitches
- 1# Baby Boo
- Straight Coats
- Bienvenidos A California

Vontel - Vision Of A Dream
Again, a real smooth summer album. He`s vocal is uniqe and he can switch to many different styles. The singing on the album is also great. Roger Troutman got two apperences and he is great as always.
The beats are laid back and simple, with deep bases and some smooth synths. All songs are great to ride to 8)
Stand out tracks :
- Dream No More
- 4 My Homiez (Ft Roger Troutman)
- Funk Wit Dis
- Ghetto Life
- Say Playa (Ft Roger Troutman

Dove Shack - This Is The Shack
A westcoast classic. Bo Roc owns the hooks, and C-Knight and 2Scoops comes correct on this album. Smooth beats of course and laid back flows. Some great anthems on this album, and if you put this in your car you can just let it play and ride on.
Stand out track
- Fuck Ya Mouth
- Summertime in The LBC
- This Is The Shack
- Smoke Out
- Ghetto Life
- We Funk(The G-Funk)

LV - I Am LV
Seriously, need I say more? I wish LV had put out more solo music during the G-funk craze of the mid-90s. He had a solo version of "Gangsta's Paradise" on there, the funky summertime single "Throw Ya Hands Up (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pZLq9RBUvw)" with Treach (and Kam on the alternate version) and there's "the wrong come up" with that sick bill withers sample ...damn.

As "Prof@ssor" said, the Hittman album "Hittmanic Verses".
Last Dayz
Blaww with Knoc & Dre
The Hiznit
Get Myne ...etc
straight up classic! most of the awesome Dre & Mel Man beats on there, Hitt with the smooth flow ...

The same goes for King T's "Thy Kingdom Come" record. Semi official release, but none the worse for it! The Game (It's Ruff) with Battlecat on the beat and talkbox ... Speak On It, Monay, Step On By, Let's Make a V (ridiculous DJ Quik beat!) ... As with Hittman, I wish this record came out officially as intended, properly mastered and with full artwork and stuff...

I also happen to really really like Ice Cube's "War & Peace Vol. 1: The War Disc". The dark tone of the whole record with tracks like Ghetto Vet, The Peckin Order, Pushin Weight (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GoOlnqnXzHU) (classic video!), Greed, Ask About Me. Man this record was HARD but still had smooth stuff on it like Penitentiary!

...

there's probably other stuff (and also non-gangsta/g-funk records) but those are the ones I thought of right off the bat.

Westside Connection - Terrorist Threats                (Its one of my favourite albums - definetly top 10)
213 - The Hard Way [specially Advance edition]      (people keep complainin about no Warren G productions, but this album is str8 classic to me)
Ice Cube - Lough now, Cry Later                          (its a bangin album, i dont know why most of people dont feel it)
Snoop Dogg - Tha Blue Carpet Treatment             (not sure if really underrated, but its a lot better, than people say it is)
Snoop Dogg - R&G                                             (its pretty dope album, while it get a lot of hate)

*Tyga - No Introduction
Gets way too much hate. Understandable since those who think they know everything about hip hop hate everything Young Money related.

*Fashawn - Boy Meets World
IMO his mixtapes were better, but not by much. Deep raps and soulful messages, obviously overlooked by everyone.

*U-N-I - A Love Supreme 2.0
Didn't even know about this duo until I saw them by chance on 2dopeboyz, very creative music.

*Boom Bap Project - Circumstance Dictates
The Seattle group's debut album. Criminally underrated.
http://www.youtube.com/v/JFKHmShqDvo

*Luck-One & Dekk - Beautiful Music
A duo out of Oregon's debut album. In my book any west coast album by an artist outside Cali is underrated.
http://www.youtube.com/v/oxjPuxjyhoA

*Cool Nutz - Incredible
Another act from Oregon who's got a handful of albums (all worthy of the title underrated), I picked this one since it's what introduced me to Cool Nutz in the first place.

King Tee - Thy Kingdom Come -  7/10. Shit is very underrated and I think almost every beat is bangin, the features are dope and King Tee did his thing!
Replay value lacks a little though?

Horse Shoe Gang - Gangsta MC . 9/10 . Just one fuckin incredible album. Complex, clever and funny lyrics matched with some dope productions
and some SICK verses from Crooked I and Royce. They touch a lot of different subjects! + Intro, Interlude
and Outro are 3 amazing tracks! not the typical lame ''funny'' skits.

Ya Boy - Rookie Of The Year . 7/10 - Might not be classic status but the beats are dope and Ya Boy was HUNGRY back then. Sick deliveries, flows and lyrics

The ones I could think of right now.  8)

I agree with alot already mentioned.
One that i reall liked that ive never heard mentioned was Rhythm & Greens Music and mail album.
Had cool production and featured Richie Rich, B-legit, Yukmouth, Shock-G, The Whoridas, Phats Bossie, etc i actually loved it but must admit aint listened to it in years though.

I really liked the Luniz albums.

RBX's RBX factor/No Mercy no remorse is another. Had awesome production and the whole album just sounded great.

Daz this is the life i lead another one that gets slept on that i feel had real good production and raps on it.

I really liked C-bo's till my casket drops, enemy of the state and one life to live albums. All had great production, features and raps.

The lawhouse complimation had cool shit on it from Xzibit, Raskass, the luniz, ice t, etc

Cell block vol one was an awesome complimation also. that cool oakland style. Too short, mr ill, bad n fluence , seagram, richie rich, fatha dom, etc.

Brotha Lynch - Loaded
Always felt that this cd was over looked because of Season of Tha Siccness and X-Raided's cd's.  Dark eerie beats suits Lynch perfectly.  Man I wish he'd get this style back.

Mr. Doctor - Setrippn' Bloccstyle
He was overshadowed by the bigger names on Black Market.

RBL Posse - Ruthless By Law
This group as a whole doesn't get the recognition I felt they deserved.  Dope cd.

K. Dot - C4
Even though it's a mixtape, I still consider it album material.  A lot of people hated it because he used Wayne's beats but he ripped them.

Zion I and The Grouch - Heroes in the City of Dope (just came out, a fresh sound for the west coast)

didn't this come out in 06 or so?

btw, what's with all this euro talk?

if you wanna go that route, include all the Blackalicious and Jurassic 5 albums, full of classic material.
The Mighty Underdogs Ep is pretty overlooked as well, i'd say (their album, too, but I didn't get around to that yet so I don't wanna praise anything I haven't heard)

Everyone's lists are typical. All LA/DPG affiliated albums. Albums by Cali artists don't deserve the title underrated.

Diezel P - Write Now
Dope ass artist, has a few more releases under his belt. He also does charity shows here and there.
I personally love this album since it's the first I heard from him, lol.
http://www.youtube.com/v/9lRwA9qVNcM

Macklemore - The Langauge Of My World
Released after he changed his name from Professor Macklemore, dude spits fire on this album. His Unplanned Mixtape was dope too.
http://www.youtube.com/v/pPIqDBM0zd8

D. Black - Ali'Yah
Dude's music is realistic and also idealistic at the same time.
http://www.youtube.com/v/uvvX_ruZjT4

Grynch - Chemisty EP
I'm still surprised that Billboard gave him a few secs in the spotlight a while back, but if they hadn't I never would've known about this cat.
http://www.youtube.com/v/tKOVF1qwPzI

Okwerdz - Off Season
Okay, this is a mixtape but a dope mixtape at that (the tags on it ruin it though).

Time to educate you euros. Don't say I didn't try

Zion I and The Grouch - Heroes in the Healing of the Nation (just came out, a fresh sound for the west coast)
Zion I - Tru and Livin (my fav. Zion I album)
The Pharcyde - Labcabincalifornia (even better than their debut)
Souls of Mischief - Montezuma's Revenge (many of you probably slept on this)
Gift of Gab - Escape 2 Mars (another 09 album you slept on)
Del tha Funkee Homosapien - Both Sides of the Brain (my favorite del album)
Aceyalone and the Lonely Ones (I KNOW you slept on this)
The Coup - Steal this Album (cop this classic if you haven't)
Haiku D'Etat - Haiku D'Etat (I know almost everyone here hasn't heard this classic)
Rakaa - Crown of Thorns (its from last year, did you sleep on it again?)

I got one cd that has alot of zion i on it, asiide from that i aint heard much of em.
That pharcyde album was pretty cool. Fatlips solo was also dope.
I cannot belive i forgot Dels both sides of the brain. My fave Del album also. My mates slept on it pretty bad, three of us purchased it though. If i recal the source gave it 2 1/2 mics??
I had mates that own the coup stuff but cant say i've heard teh other stuff.

Another cool cd i own is beats and lyrics volume 1. its a complimation with heiroglyphics , pharcyde, living ledgends, aceyalone, mystik jouney men, xzibit, etc. Cool shit.
This thread got me wanting to unpack cds i've had put away for almost 2 years.
Oh and i DID buy That new Souls album btw, as well as Aplus's solo and Two of Dels more recent digital only albums.
But iam not euro so dont really matter? lol

EDIT: Oh and RasKass's A.D.I.D.A.S is a fucken dope double cd. Explains the state of current hio hop quiet well. Awesome hrsemen track on there.

I love Ras Kass and all but some of those beats on ADIDAS ...meh.

I'd say Ras' Institutionalized Vol. 1 is pretty overlooked, though! (Soul on Ice is a classic, so I don't need to mention that one^^)

Ice-T - O.G.

A soundtrack to South Central of the 80's and 90's.

The sound-effects and prequel narration to '6 In Morning' on 'Midnight' is a must hear.

Midnight chillin' at A.M P.M.
Coolin' drinkin' apple juice
In Evil's BM
The sound's up loud
To attract attention
ARMORALL'd tires
On a lowered suspension
Nardi to steer with
Alpine deck was glowin'
Bumpinn' Big Daddy
And the nigga was definitely flowin'...

I listened to that again just recently. While I love "Midnight" (those Led Zeppelin drums are a winner on every track), I'm having a really hard time with some of the more, let's say, simple tracks. Ice T's simple flow on those passive beats just doesn't grab me most of the time. It's too inconsistent for my liking. But like I said, Midnight is dope and without a doubt a classic track!

Foesum - Perfection

W.C. - Curb Servin'
D.J. Quik - Safe + Sound (a lot of people prefer Rhythmalism but S + S is my Quik classic)
Foesum - Perfection
Mack 10 - Foe Life
Kokane - Funk Upon A Rhyme
Kausion - South Central Los Skanless

Dj Quik is underrated.

King Tee Thy kingdom come/iv life

Dj quick all of them

Penthouse Players Clique - Paid the Cost
Xzibit - 40 Dayz and 40 Nightz*
Xzibit - At the Speed of Life*
*I may be alone in this, but I feel like he started loosing his rawness around the Restless era.

I already quoted it, but King Tee's IV Life.  This in my top 5 West Coast albums.  If you have not, I suggest checking out the following:
   3 Strikes Ya' Out
   Duck
   Free Style Ghetto

The DOC- Helter skelter- So sick, Eroticd's tracks are all super dope but he really goes in on this release. all the tracks are dope, especially da hearafter, return of the livin dead and from ruthless to deathrow. i also highly recommend the ep that cmae out before the album called return of the living dead. it has a couple super dope remixes imo both remixes arwe better than the og's. and i can imagine dre ripping these lyrics doc is spitting next to ice cube. highly slept on.

are you serious?
this was a horrible release and D.O.C should never have tranished his legacy with it. Erotic D had a few good beats but the rest were generic G funk rip offs

E-40's albums the last few years.
my ghetto report card
All 4 revenue retrievin albums & all 3 block brochure albums.

Shame E-40 don't get the mainstream credit.  He should have with those 7 albums.  If there was an album that's actually worth $16-18 it would be any revenue retrievin album or any block brochure album.
