Title: Ice Cube - Greatest rapper alive?
Post by: MIAMI4LIFE on June 20, 2007, 09:11:35 AM
was behind classic albums with 2 different groups NWA and Westside Connection, his own discography has countless classic albums and several dope to maybe average, I don't think he gets the respect because maybe he has gone into acting and his music isn't his first priority nowadays but I think he has been consistent as anyone in the game releasing the amount of material that he has released, and this is coming from an East Coast dude who is surrounded by Jay-z and Nas fans who both I respect, Nas more than Jay but I think Cube has a better catalog when you look at his overrall work

couldn't of said it better myself. You can make a VALID argument that cube has been apart of about 6 classic albums. That is impossible for any other rapper

i would change thread title to greatest rapper dead or alive ;)

IMO he's 2nd to KRS, maybe 1a and 1b. But imo he's right there and better than the common choices for GOAT...Pac, Biggie, and Jay.

Straight Outta Compton - 5/5
AMW - 5/5
Death Certificate - 6/5 (LOL its that good, this album still amazes me)
Predator - 4.75/5 (Personally my favorite)
Lethal Injection - 4.5/5 (5-6 classic racks on an 11 track album)
Bow Down - 5/5
War Disc - 4/5
Peace Disc - 3/5
Terrorist Threats - 3.75/5
LNCL - 4/5 (Could've been 4.5 mics if he chose better beats and cut some meat out)

He has 2 group classics, 2 definete solo classics, and possibly 3 if you include Predator. And these arent everyday classics, Straight Outta Compton basically birthed and mainstreamed Westcoast Gangsta Rap and Death Certificate is the GOAT West Coast LP, better than Chronic, Doggystyle, or any Pac CD.

Str8 Outta Compton - 5/5
AMW - 4.75/5 - CD ws sooooo short, and for me that caused a minor problem
DC - 6/5 ;)
Predator - 4.5/5
Lethal Injection - 4.75/5
Bow Down - I gotta re-do this one to make my mind up
War Disc - 3.5/5
Peace Disc - 3.25/5
Terrorist Threats - 4.25/5
LNCL - 4.25/5

i would change thread title to greatest rapper dead or alive ;)

yeah I just want to see everybody's opinion on him, even his average material is highly listenalble and to me that is an important factor while he was making his movies and still is he has the ability to put out dope material, but his classic stuff is just unmatched I would consider him probably the greatest of all time also

He's held to a higher standard because his earlier work was off the charts...so when Cube comes "subpar" its still better than the majority of shit out there.

but to me, his "sub-par" shit is only "sub-par" because of his earlier shit. It's not held to the same standards, because it ain't classic or near classic. But his "sub-par" shit would be "near classic" in 90% of ALL other rappers catalogs

One of the best to ever do it. Of all time though alive is tough because including Cube, alot of other rappers are adding to their legacy. I actually got into a debate with my homeboy about if Snoop or Cube has a better catalogue.

That is what I said. I said you can even argue Cube's weaker albums by fans standards like War, Peace and LNCL are comparable or even better than Snoop's weaker albums.

Exactly...but Snoop doesnt get nearly the same heat or criticism as Cube would get.

Cube got heat for We Be Clubbin a little bit, but that song was a hit and You Can Do It was a smash also. Snoop has also had success with doing songs out of the norm for him. I don't count that against either of them. I just go by albums head to head and IMO I think Ice Cube has a better catalogue. But that is the cool thing about it, they both are legends and it makes for a good debate on both sides.

I just saw Cube in concert a few months back and I also saw Nas as well so of all time hip hop I am torn between a few rappers but for the west coast I would have to say Cube.

I am not saying he is the best but his catalogue is insane for about the 1st 4 or 5 albums up to and including The Fix. Group albums= Geto Boys? nuff said on that. He is up there. And he improved on the mic with his albums excluding all those BS "albums" J Prince started putting out the last couple of years but he is up there. Nas has a nice one, I don't know how many Rakim has, maybe a few more but not many.

i've got:

mr.scarface is back
the world is yours
the diary
untouchable
my homies (2 discs)
the last of a dying breed
the fix (it's wack you say? i've heard my block and that song is fire...plus appearances from WC & nas)
my balls and my world
my homies pt. 2 (more of a compilation the pt.1 was by the looks of it)

am i missing any d-nice? i'm seeing three others called "the don", "face 2 face" and 1 called "the features" (i'm guessin the third is a fan made compilation of his guest spots)

Yep that is it. I meant to add The Fix in as dope albums he has done so nobody diss me for a typing error.  ;D If you want to add the Geto Boys/Facemob catalogue also it matches up well with Cube. Face is probably my 3rd favorite artist behind Cube and Pac. Face 2 Face is just a compilation of hits with 2pac and Face on it and I don't recognize the other 2. I would consider Face the King Of The South just on his history but he has not been active on the album tip for a minute.

alright from quick research, these are albums i would think i wanna get from geto boyz/facemob

geto boyz:

--grip it! on that other level or geto boyz (first album with scarface and willie d apart of the group) (seems like these albums are almost the same, which 1 do you recommend d-nice, if not both?)
--we can't be stopped
--til death do us part (mc big mike replacing willie d)
--the ressurection (willie d returns to replace mc big mike)
--the good, the bad, and the ugly (bushwick bill leaves, group becomes duo scarface and willie d)
--the foundation (back 2 scarface, willie d, bushwick bill)

Face Mob:

the other side of the law

That's it. There are a couple of Facemob albums after that one but Face was hardly a part of the group by then.

also forgot to mention going gold on an independent label with his last album, don't know how many rappers have done that but it proves that in this era when other more commercial artists are struggling to sell 300,000 that Cube still is revelent in the game 17 years after his first album

Yep Cube been doper then the biggie's, rakim's, jay-z's, nas's etc....

He needs to really lyrically kill it with his next album.

2 my fav mc - 2pac & ice cube

Too bad they only did 1 track together...and it was before Pac really, really blew up. Always wished they did something around 95-96.

Ice Cube just might be at the top of my personal favourites list. I've always been undecided who exactly I consider to be the greatest or my favourite or whatever, but Cube's most definately among the few contending for that #1 spot.

Cube is a mafuckin legend ight......aint no one put out that much classic westcoast shit EVER, only person who kinda can go against him is Pac if he was still alive. But Cube god dayummmm, u cant even argue that he aint the best, if he aint, then who is really? I honestly think cube has a SOLID 3 years left in him and after that he should stick to just producing, after his next album comes out "Raw Footage" i think he should put out 2 more and thats good enough, cause being on top this long, and like u guys said LNCR was more then subpar but compared to like DA its a classic, like people aint really on his level. But You can only be on top for so long u know before u start to fall off just like Spice 1, Spice is another classic on top on my list, but listen to his new shit, its like wtf r u doing man, he aint even puttin out shit no more, and i dont wanna see Cube go down like that or anything, but anyways Cube is no doubt the best west coast artist of all time!!

This is a great thread BTW. I think I would have to listen to a few other rappers catalogues to make a sound choice, but mos def for the west it's Cube hands down.

yeah its between Cube and Nas for me but considering the classic work Cube put out with Westside Connection and of course NWA put him ahead IMO

Yeah seeing both Nas and Cube live a few months back and just listening to all the hits both have, you could make a argument for either one.

I personally feel like, if Cube had stop making music after Lethal Injection, he really could be up for candidate of Greatest Rapper. But after the first WSC album, his stuff has slowly deteriorated in my eyes. He still has a dope track here or there, but on the whole it's subpar to me.

I somewhat Agree

His last good record was Peace, war wa cool.

Wscg Was his best work in my opinion. His last 2 offering Lncl and terrorist threats are terrible

Yeah his subject matter changed alot after Lethal Injection. It became more gangsta and club oriented. Not as many politicial tracks or social commentary as his earlier stuff. But alot of rappers with the time put in like Cube have done it also. I can still enjoy his later material though. That War disc has always been one of my favorite Cube records. Peace was cool, and LNCL is good. Then CT Experience came out and also a couple of guest appearances and Cube has got that fire back. He is killing his verses again. I got a feeling he is going back to his roots on Raw Footage though. I think once it took him a little bit of time to get back in the swing of things with the music, but he showed me alot with this last record. He can still make hits.

You damn right!!! He's one of the best ever! The only reason he's not at the top is because he's rich and doesn't get that hunger anymore. I.E Eminem, Mobb Deep,...etc..

The more party tracks from him can come off a little bland at times but ones with solid topics he shows he can still wreck shop. For example here are some I dig off his more recent albums.

Extradiction
3 Strikes You In
The Peckin Order
The Curse Of Money
Cash Over Ass
Ghetto Vet (one of his better story telling joints, very descriptive on this one)
Greed (dope ass track, he killed it)
Hello
Penitentiary
Dr. Frankenstein
Until We Rich
Why We Thugs

I picked alot off the War disc (hell the whole War disc is bangin) but also WSC tracks Luni mentioned and others.
