I kinda agree...Baseball Playoffs > Everyother sport...i remember pissing my pants watching the Yankees vs Red Sox series..yelling at the TV every inning about somthing...and when Aaron Boone hit that homerun...wow, it was such a great feeling...i cried  :'(

But when you watch the World Cup of Soccer or World Cup of hockey (or Hockey at the olympics), God damn, baseball doesn't even come close.

but then agian my opinion doesn't count since i have no Baseball team near my city (Im Canadian, live in Vancouver)..I hate watching the Seattle Mariners play since they got rid of A-Rod and Griffey..and the two teams i do cheer for are Houston Astros and new York Yankees....but I also follow the Blue Jays and Marlins (not as much as i do with the Astros and Yankees)

If we got a team, I'd be at every game.  There's nothing I want more than a mlb team here in Vancouver.  The AL west only has 4 teams anyway.  Why not put one in Vancouver?

But yeah, baseball is by far the best sport.

seeing as the actual playing time in a major league baseball games which lasts two and a half hours has been clocked at 9 minutes and 55 seconds... you have to have an active mind to watch such a boring game

yeah when you are throwing a ball 90+ MPH, thats a lot of pitches in just under 10 minutes, considering it takes a split second for that pitch to reach home plate.  Baseball takes by far more skill than both football and basketball.  LIke dude said, baseball is dull to those with dull minds.  There can be absolutely no hesitation when batting in baseball, or when making a defensive play.  There is so much to baseball, but most people will never understand.

lmao I don't care what anyone says you NEED far more athletic ability to play football than baseball.
Football has already taken over the role as Americas pasttime.

yeah i agree, it's harder to throw a baseball fast in a straight line then to throw a football to a reciever when there's a line of 300 pound guys ready to crush you and some 200 pound guys ready to crush the person you're giving the ball to, not to mention that you have to trust the person you're passing to to do the play exactly the way you think it's going to go no matter what the opposition does.

and since the majority of outs in baseball come from pop fly's and such, it must be hard to sit and wait for a ball to come to you in that sun....

yea its real hard to LEARN the strike zone , to LEARN the opposing pitchers best pitches, or to learn the batters weakness or hot spots.  See in baseball....it takes skill to get u there but it takes studying and working hard to make u become a SOLID player in baseball.

same with basketball.....skill will get you there....but studying adjusting to the opponents weeknesses and so forth will make you a solid great player........same thing is applied....not to take away from baseball...but they are two different type of sports....

in football you have to learn the whole opposing team's strength and weaknesses because the majority of them are able to put in work on you....

but i can see how having to remember a few pitching styles is much more difficult

This thread is a matter of opinion.. more people watch Football than Baseball and more Baseball than Basketball. I havent peeped ONE NBA playoff game yet. I only follow the Celtics...When there season is over I don't watch no more. I do watch a good amount of Red Sox games..But to me Patriots games are way more exciting especially when your team goes 17-2

Well, I don't follow baseball, but I know for a fact that TV ratings for the NBA in general are higher than TV ratings for the MLB, because I read it in the L.A. Times not too long ago...

Some say basketball is becoming America's most popular sport. Participation has grown by over 8% since 1987, while baseball has declined by more than 24%, according to the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association.

Of course baseball is the greatest sport.  It's also a true team sport, you can't carry a baseball team all by yourself.  EVERYBODY has to be talented, or the team won't do well.  There's virtually no way to play baseball selfishly.  You can't hog the ball... you can't try and hotshot and show off, because generally you're either trying to get the ball to another player, or you're the only one involved in the play in the first play (I.E., catching a pop fly, tagging someone out)... so there's no egos and selfishness.  It's a simple game but has complex deep rules with lots of statistics for people who prefer the depth of those aspects of a sport.  Finally, it has a rich history of charismatic players and is buried in the history of our country.  Not as many people watch anymore, but it's still the greatest sport.  Just because people don't realize it doesn't make something less great, it is what it is, you can't change the truth.

You need to support that statement to prove it's a 'fact'.  Show us some numbers, in my opinion it could go either way.  I haven't watched any basketball games since the strike, and that was years ago, and I even had a pro team in my town, so I really don't know which is watched more anymore.

this is the statement that made Tom tell you that u cant speak on baseball again.

take ur keys and put them between ur knees and ur waist, drop them, and record the time it took for the keys to reach the floor.  Thats the time a batter has to react to SWING at the ball.  oh yea and the batter also has to deal with the change of the speed.  And its not just realizing what pitch it is.  "Oh its a slider, i can definetly hit this one"  Location, Location, Location also can fuck with a batter

seeing as the batter pretty much knows where the ball is going (somewhere in front of him) , and that once the pitcher winds up...he's throwing the ball....it's not that big of a science. also the fact that not everyone is hitting homeruns left and right means that luck has a percentage in there... i'm not saying i can do it, but you're making it seem like these batters and performing miracles with every swing....

still waiting for the facts that makes baseball the best sport

so far you can't count viewers, fans, athletes, time of actual gameplay....

if its not much of a science....why has it been 63 years since a player has hit over .400?  63 years!!!!

so in 10 at bats you manage to get four hits...ur fucken dope.  If ur a QB and u go 4-10 thats not good, if ur a shooter and u go 4-10 ur just doing an ok job.

so what you're saying is people expect better from other sports and if you don't do too good in baseball, you're awesome.....sounds good to me

You told me its easy to hit
I give you facts how its not easy to hit
those numbers i gave show you how hard it is to hit compared to how hard it is to make a shot or make a complete pass.

History of the game makes it better.

during one of first games Jackie Robinson played , he reached  first base while racial slurs are yelled at him from the stands...and the white first baseman gives him a hug.  Thats just something else right there.

2. so i ask you to give me facts why baseball is a great game and the best you could come up with is that baseball players aren't even good at the game

3. yes that's a touching moment in history.....i think i saw that in a wrestlemania before too

4. and yes baseball does have a history, the sport is so boring that's all you hear the announcers talk about

don't even bother with smerlus.  its completely fuckin obvious he don't know a goddamn thing about baseball.  I fuckin luv basketball and football to death.  I'm not even gonna bother argueing with him, cuase its worthless.  he don't know a goddamn thing that he is talking about.  Argueing with him about this subject is like argueing about snoop being a sellout with the others on the forum.  sometimes u just gotta pull your head outta your ass to realize the real, and until then your just gonna be in your own dream world.

Oh yeah, did you know that it takes 250% more athletic skill and cordination to run into someone as hard as you can and knock them on the ground, as it
takes to hit a 90+ mph pitch.  ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

this is some of the funniest shit I have seen.  Smerlus, your making yourself look as dumb as the french dribbler.  Just cause you guys aren't smart enuff to realize the talent in baseball, doesn't mean its not there.

Hell Ja Rule and Nelly sold a shitload more cd's than DJ Quik last year.  Guess that means they are the better rappers, right guys?  I mean, its all about numbers right?  DJ quik  is not talked about by all your faggot groupie friends, so he must suck right?  The DJ's don't play his shit, so he has to suck right?  Since people are too fuckin dumb to understand Ras Kass lyrics, he sucks right?

If the LA Dodgers were in first place and considered a good team, and a World Series contender, than this argument, probably wouldn't take place, cause almost everyone on here is on LA's nuts.  but since the dodgers suck fuckin dick, and ain't been a contender for years, these fuckin groupie hoez don't give a fuck.

and Smerlus:

besides the QB, name one person on the FB field that has the coordination skills of a mlb player, and explain how. (especially those 350 lb linemen, I'm sure they can hit a fastball of Tim Hudson, or turn a double play with no problem  ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

1."but i can see how having to remember a few pitching styles is much more difficult"  U were being sarcastic here.  Implying that its just not that much more difficult than shooting the ball.

2. if you are 3/10 in baseball...u very well can be an All Star Player.  Does that mean the player sucks? Nope, it means that getting a hit is extremely, extremely difficult.

3. Wrestlemania?  You do know im talking bout the 40s right? You know, during a time of a lot of segregation.

4.  Baseball has a richer history than any other sport in America.  End of story.  Announcers dont mean shit...the players and moments are there regardless of the announcers.

Believe me I have played both Baseball and Football at competitive levels and Football was 100 times funner to play. I played 1st Base and I liked defense better because it is more action. But on Offense I hated sitting in the dugout waiting to MAYBE bat. Football I played Middle Linebacker and Fullback.
I prefered to be on Defense. There is alot you have to know in both sports. I thought football was harder..Learning the formations and plays. reading Qbs and RBs.

2. the baseball vs baseketball people started bringing numbers into it to say that one sport is better than the other, so since we were talking about numbers i brought in soccer to top them all

hey smart guy, do u know what an analogy is.

1. uh, a huge percentage of football is tackling, or blocking.  In many cases that is all that a player does.  Their is many players that never or rarely ever touch the football.  I luv football, but your a fucking idiot to say that in general it takes more athletic skill and coordination to play football rather than baseball.

3.  you didn't understand it, and used your own dumbass logic.    So I ask you again, explain to me how a football player (besides the QB) has more athletic skill and coordination than a mlb player.
Title: Re:Baseball > Every other Sport
Post by: smerlus on May 26, 2004, 02:17:46 PM
read my first quote....only 10 minutes are spent playing a regulation game... so if we want to take percentages of something...baseball players spend more time spitting and grabbing their balls than playing....so don't come at me with percentages of games

and lastly you said "I'm sure they can hit a fastball of Tim Hudson, or turn a double play with no problem" and to do these thing, they have to play a game that for some reason...they don't play....so once you answer my question if the Yankees can beat the toronto maple leafs in a hockey game...then i'll answer your question  ;D

"I'm sure they can hit a fastball of Tim Hudson, or turn a double play with no problem"
thats whats called an analogy.  the point was that it takes more athletic skill, and cordination to hit a pitch from a very good pitcher, or to turn a double play, than it takes to tackle someone or block someone.  and if you don't agree to that, just say so, and I won't even bother talking to you anymore.

and no  I don't think the yankees could beat the mapleleafs, because they probably  couldn't get enough of them to play cause hockey wouldn't pay them good enough cuz they are the money hungry whore yankees.

1) you're comparing two different things once again...i'm sure the gold medalist in long jump couldn't hit a ball, and a baseball player can't beat a gold medalist in the long jump....so they're both not athletic?

2) and that's true about the yankees

First of all, you can take out the 2003 ratings for NBA Finals, because that was a LOW in NBA history. The Nets and Spurs are both very boring teams, as you can see by the ratings decrease...Now, I still said I know that the World Series is watched more than the NBA Finals, but I also said basketball, in general, is watched more than baseball, in general...That includes the regular season games, and the playoffs as well...Plus, there's Final Four college basketball, and a bunch of other basketball leagues, which are all televised...You have to be blind to not see that basketball is the more popular sport...If you take the TV ratings of 2002, you can see that the Finals and The World Series were close, and then you have regular season basketball and playoffs which are watched more...Nowadays, basketball is the more popular sport...PeACe

Sad when you have like 5 Western conference teams that can run the New Jersey Nets.

Why would you want to watch the finals?

no dumbass you try again.  I know that the dodgers are in first place, but they aren't a good team.  they are in the worst division in baseball, they are gonna get swept the first round of the playoffs if they even make it that far.

and they haven't been to the world series since 88 and haven't won a playoff game since 92.  thats not considered a good team you jack ass.
