Carter, Lil’ Wayne is already prepping its follow-up. In this exclusive SOHH.com interview, Weezie speaks on being the best, school, Jay-Z and Def Jam.
On last year’s “Bring It Back,” Wayne boldly declared being “the best rapper alive since the best rapper retired.” While purists quickly dismissed his claim as borderline blasphemy, Weezie feels he has yet to hear a rapper that can rival his skills.
“To tell you the truth, I ain’t never heard anybody say I was bugging. If I am bugging, put the pressure on me then. It’s gonna let me know I’m bugging. You ain’t got a rapper alive that can f#@$ with me homie,” Wayne told SOHH.com in regards to last year’s declaration. “I ain’t no punchline rapper. I rap about when they punch me in my face, real life rap. I know ain’t nobody f#@$ing with me. I wouldn’t even do it if I knew somebody was f#@$ing with me. It don’t make no sense to do it. I like to take control of everything I do and the day I can’t take control of it, is the day I’ll leave it alone.”
Interestingly, Jay-Z, who first claimed the “best rapper alive” title, took a liking to Wayne’s confident attitude and recruited him to feature on Destiny’s Child’s “Soldier” last fall. Since then, critics say Wayne’s flows now bare striking similarities to Hov’s cadences.
“Honestly on that song [“Soldier”], he [Jay-Z] called me and told me how I gotta start my verse off and everything,” Weezie revealed. “As far as personal, I don’t know the God. But you know, as far as an influence, yeah, there’s a 100% influence on my rap game. I feel like that’s the only person, him and Big I ever see as great with lyrics.”
With “Soldier” becoming a smash hit and Jiggaman becoming Def Jam president shortly after, rumors began spreading that Wayne was defecting Cash Money for Island/Def Jam. While Cash Money CEO Baby downplayed the rumors as small negotiations in The Source Magazine’s April issue, Wayne admitted that he was a step away from signing with the God emcee.
“I was on Hot 97, but I never said I was with Def Jam. I just said that that’s who I was talking to and there was a lot of negotiations,” Wayne explained. “To tell you the truth, it was 85% sure. As a matter of fact I flew out there. I met with the God. We talked and I was down, but I came back and sat down at the round table with pops and pops had more food on the plate.”
Weezie eventually resigned with Cash Money and also inked his own Young Money Entertainment to the label. These days, he’s juggling studio sessions, concert dates and classes at the University of Houston where he majors in Sports Psychology and hits the campus two days a week.
“I have a sports agency and plus I’m about to try to buy a piece of the Hornets. And sooner or later, if I get a degree in that, I feel it’ll help me one way or another with owning a team,” Wayne said of his reasons for picking the major. “It’s a real big school. I’m just as regular as anybody in there; that’s what I like about it. I really haven’t had one person come to me in school yet. My class probably got like two or three other Black people in there. I mean people know me, they speak. I might have heard people say stuff like, ‘I heard you was in here. I didn’t know you really go here.’ But other than that, that’s about it.
Being in the lab hasn’t stopped Weezie from promptly completing his next album, The Carter 2. Still, the Cash Money soldier is presently awaiting beats from Eminem and Kanye West. He recently received a beat from Havoc to add to the LP.
“[Those are] people that the world listens to when that person says, ‘This person is the best rapper.’ [If I] get me on the tracks that the so-called greats rap on; if you hear how I can vibe on those same tracks -I wanna see who can come up against that. And when they meet that person that can, then I’ll be waiting,” Wayne stated. “That’s why I never spit at nobody. I can go at a lot of people, but it’s really not worth it. The only way I’d consider [going at] somebody is if my daughter became a rapper; cause she’ll probably be as talented as me. Nobody can f#@$ with me. I’ve been doing this since I was 8 years old. I signed my deal at 11, put out my first album at 12, my first solo at 14, made my first million at 19. ni99as can’t f#@$ with me. I don’t get on a record and preach, none of that. I just talk about how fly I am and that’s why they don’t like me.”
Lil Wayne’s The Carter 2, featuring production from Mannie Fresh, is slated to hit stores July 2.

Man, have you even listened to Tha Carter? That album is lyrically one of the best in the last 8-9 years. And this is coming from somebody who couldnt stand him until tha Carter came out. Lil Wayne doin it. Probably overall the best raper in the south right now. Crooked I and E 40 are the actual best alive to me, but Wayne is up there.
-
Now first up, I don't agree with Wayne that he's the best.
But...
Fuck it, I can't even be mad at him for saying it! Isn't that what hip-hop's about, fucking beating your chest and bigging yourself up? Dudes like LL built careers on it ("NO rapper can rap quite like I can"). You can't hate this dude for stepping out there and saying' "Come and get me"
On top of that tho', dude has dropped some good shit in his time - he certainly ain't even close to being wack on the mic, even if he isn't where he thinks he is.
Any doubters, check his opening verse on Juvenile's 'Tha G-Code' track - Wayne's flow is fucking SICK. That one performance alone always blows me away when I hear it.
-
Is anybody has heard Wayne's song "Earthquake", it's beyond obvious that he stole Jay-Z's entire flow on it, even worst than Will Smith takin Rakim's on Summertime.
He is decent, but definitely isn't the best in the south to me. I'd take Luda over him any any day, and then T.I., Big Boi and Andre, and Scarface are better than him and have done much more than he has.

as of now i honestly can't think of a better rapper in the game
-
let me tell you Lil Wayne is no where near the best rapper out there, IMO he is crap
-
he can keep a party goin but top rapper... ??? lol shit like this just leaves me scratchin my head.

the best in the south? lol hell no! the best in the game!? fuuuuuuuuuuuuck no
he's not even on Luda or Yung Buck's level
-

Listen to Tha Carter. Luda I can see somebody makin an argument for, but Young buck aint touchin him.

ill give you face but,
luda is on a 2 cd loosing streak
big boi had only a handful of good solo cuts
andre is on some hippe shit right now
TIs good(better than luda) but isnt seeing wayne right now
-
thanks for the article..wayne is dope...but not the best ..lol
-
wayne should shutup and look in the mirror and see what label he's on. Cash Money has not built a superstar rapper in forever. everyone from that label is so average.
-
let me tell you Lil Wayne is no where near the best rapper out there, IMO he is crap
I'd take Luda over him any any day
-
imho wayne is 1 of the top 6 rappers in the south
1. cee-lo green
2.andre 3000
3.bun-b
4.ludacris
5.wayne
6. big gipp
buck cannot fuck with wayne...hell buck cant even fuck with lil chat or gangsta boo while i'm bullshittin..and they aint even relevant anymore..hell lil turk would wreck buck ass
wayne is the only rapper in the south that improves everytime he drops an album..no other rapper has done it
bg cant even mess with wayne nemore...bg has always been the best out everybody from that cash money circle..but he has fell off sumthin terrible..

How can Luda be on a 2 cd losing streak? Red Light District is a slumper. If anything TI is the one who needs to go back to the drawing board, cause his first 2 albums are clasics to me. This last shit he did was'nt that bad, but it aint that street shit that he did on his first 2 except for a few cuts. And Andre, I can see why a lot of people wouldnt be feelin him, but I like that off the wall shit he been up to. that dude is pretty damn creative. His shit is tight. It aint nothin you can hit the block to, but its some good listenin.
-
first off, i don´t get along with his voice very well. but even ignoring that, i do not see what the hell is supposed to make him no. 1. i prefer so many rappers from the south, they might not be technically better...still, lil wayne no. 1 hell naw, by no definition
David Banner
Kamikaze
Lord Infamous
Cee-Lo
Andre
Big Boi
Scarface
Phonte
Big Poo
Bun-B
8-Ball
esg
...
the list is long
-
Lil Wayne best in the game ??? He seriously need to stop smoking

Lil wayne is wack. he wust have been high azz hell when he did that interview.
-
lol lil wayne saying he the best rapper? wutta dumbass ... he must of forgot that nas hasnt retired yet
-
yeah, i dont see him as the best. He's trippin. BUT, i will give him this. Im notta fan of this fool at all, or any down south shit really. But he has improved a LOT from when he first stepped in the game. The last few songs ive heard from him, he's gotten way better with his flow.
-

i have heard the carter....and how are you going to say " you can see luda but not buck" when buck is better than luda and why the hell is everyone praising TI for his first 2 albums (havn't heard his last one all the way through) are just him talking he's not that lyrical
-
He is ok, But not the best IMO.
-
I don't even know how to respond to such a stupid claim.
