Title: Suggestions? How to label credits
Post by: maudizzle on September 15, 2008, 05:35:00 AM
Jome and I had this discussion the other day about how to label credits. Right now we label every mixtape as "bootleg", but that's not a clear way to label credits because not every mixtape is a bootleg. These are the type of credits there are

1. Retail albums (incl. Deluxe/limited/Japan editions, re-releases and such)
2. Official mixtapes (hard copies, internet releases, etc.)
3. Mixtapes by DJ so and so (can be hosted by whoever)
4. (Real) bootlegs

Examples:

1. CREDITS: 50 Cent - Curtis
2. CREDITS: Chamillionaire - Mixtape Messiah 4 or CREDITS: Royce Da 5'9" - The Bar Exam (Official Mixtape) ["Official mixtape" doesn't need to be added in all instances, but can be a clue in some cases]
3. CREDITS: Ya Boy & DJ Big Mike - The Fix Mixtape  Ya Boy - The Fix Mixtape
4. CREDITS: Dr. Dre - Unreleased hits from the bong (Bootleg)

We want everything labeled properly. Any suggestions?

I usually consider all mixtapes as bootlegs, unless the version is untagged and authorized. What I mean by that is there's no shoutouts on the tracks, interruptions between tracks, or track snippets; it must be uncut and uncensored. A good way to know if the mixtape is official would be to check if the mixtape is supported by a record label. You'll have to refer to Omar Cruz's mixtapes for my example. After getting recognized by Jimmy Iovine, all his mixtapes began to include the Geffen and Interscope logos, in accordance with B.Y.I. Entertainment.

Think about this for a minute. Being a lyrics supporter for OHHLA (http://"http://www.ohhla.com") and Discogs (http://"http://www.discogs.com"), whatever you label here becomes legit and up for grabs should someone decide to archive them.

How about this:

- If the mixtape in question is not supported or endorsed by the artist, it is not official. Ergo, the mixtape is a bootleg.

EDIT: How do "street albums" fit in this criteria? Some street albums are considered mixtapes due to little or no promotion.

Suggested things

1. if an album or mixtape has 12 tracks or less, can people add (EP) after the title
2. if an album or mixtape is on vinyl only (rare cases) add (Vinyl) after the title
3. No Singles, Maxi-Singles, or add a Singles section subforum? I have singles that has outside album tracks that contain credits maybe others too
4. Add Street Date retail release date? in the post, not thread title
5. Add Instrumentals and Acapellas albums retail releases but label (Instrumental LP/EP) or (Acapella LP/EP) if the words aren't included in the album title
(btw for acapella albums, beat makers don't produce acapellas, its the artist, so Acapellas are produced by the artists present, unless stated someone else wrote the lyrics or the booklet says so unless its following the same credit line as the normal album version)
6. Hip-Hop Music Video DVDS, Live, or Hip-Hop DVD's, can they have their own section too? Some Music Video DVD's ppl can make the song's credits and have the tracklisting labeled properly if the DVD doesnt already have it (goes out to VHS releases too)

just some minor things, seeing that this place prob the only biggest place for credits might as well expand it with even more options and searches
:)

12 tracks?

12 tracks?

or less than 12 tracks, idk i consider 12 tracks for an album, too short (especially when few of those tracks include intro, skits..)

i consider bootlegs being albums or mixtapes/compilations/remix blends put together by any person prob even artist just to put it out on the net, not for sale
such as:
Bone Thugs-N-Harmony - War Is On (Remix Album) (Bootleg)
Bone Thugs-N-Harmony - Strength & Loyalty ("Advance") (Bootleg)
DMX - Fuck The Industry (Bootleg)
T.I. - Paper Trail ("Advance") (Bootleg)
Best Concepts In Hip Hop Volume 1 (Bootleg)
Notorious B.I.G. - Library Of A Legend (Disc 1) (Bootleg)
NaS - Library Of A Legend (Disc 1) (Bootleg)
..random that i have

if the mixtape is on sale net or actual store retail, just label (Mixtape) after the title to let people know its a mixtape unless title says it already
another suggestion: give the DJ's mixtape credit on the Artist name adding for the thread title, then the actual music artist as stated on the cover
such as:
D.J. Moe Presents: Play-N-Skillz - The Album Before The Album
D.J. Babe Presents: Ice Cube - The Collection (Mixtape)
D.J. Ice Presents: Everything And Then Some More... (Promo Mixtape)
D.J. U-Neek Presents: Ghetto Street Thugz (Mixtape)
Statik Selektah & NaS - The Prophecy 2: The Beginning Of The N (Mixtape)

Aight, starting from the next update, the word "Bootleg" will be gone, unless it's a stolen album or a leaked unreleased album, not meant for the public.

Categorization:

1. Retail Album (So-called "Street albums" goes under this category, unless it has DJ's screaming all over it or is crippled in any other way, e.g. snippets instead of full tracks)
2. Official Mixtape (Mixtapes officially released by the artist, or officially endorsed. If it's full of tags/shouting, it can be demoted to regular mixtape status)
3. Mixtape (All other random mixtapes, usually hosted or mixed by mixtape DJ's, usually with tags/shouting, and random skits/snippets)
4. Bootleg (Stolen albums, unreleased albums not intended for the public, and such)

(5. EP's/Vinyl/Singles can be tagged as just that.. keep it simple)
(6. Advance or Partial Credits - will be used for early tracklists and advance copies, or with producers missing)

EXAMPLES:

1. CREDITS: 50 Cent - Curtis
    CREDITS: Bishop Lamont - The Confessional

2. CREDITS: Chamillionaire - Mixtape Messiah 4
or CREDITS: Royce Da 5'9" - The Bar Exam (Official Mixtape)                  ["Official mixtape" doesn't need to be added in all instances, but can be a clue in some cases]

3. CREDITS: Ya Boy - The Fix Mixtape                (When e.g. DJ Big Mike or Whoo Kid is mentioned in the album name, they can be left out when it's a 1-man solo mixtape)
    CREDITS: DJ Khaled - We Global                    (On 'various artists' albums/mixtapes, the DJ must be mentioned as the main artist)

4. CREDITS: Dr. Dre - Unreleased hits from the bong (Bootleg)                (Collection of various leaked tracks that never officially saw the light of day)
    CREDITS: Knoc-Turn'al - Knoc's Landin (Bootleg)                                (Album that never saw the light of day, possibly due to bootlegging or change of heart)

5. CREDITS: M.O.P. - Handle Ur Bizness (EP)            (Albums with 10 tracks will still be labeled as albums, unless it's released under the "EP" tag)

6. PARTIAL CREDITS: Busta Rhymes - Blessed         (Missing producers for some tracks, incomplete tracklist)
    CREDITS: Eve - Here I Am <Advance>               (Early tracklist with producers/features, but never got released)

Drop feedback and suggestions, cuz the change will be executed in the upcoming 2-5 days..  :P

Don't think there's need for a sub-section, or making the system too complicated.
I'd possibly like to see a sub-section for C.V.'s/Discographies..

it's certainly an improvement that the word bootleg will be removed for official mixtapes  ;)

i always thought it was silly that official mixtapes were labelled as bootlegs.

I have explained multiple times why we label(ed) mixtapes as bootlegs.

Anyhoo, if the release is not endorsed by the artist or by the label I'm all for it to tag it as a bootleg:
http://www.dubcnn.com/connect/index.php?topic=188643.0 -> obviously a bootleg which is not endorsed by anyone but DJ Whiteowl; if there were credits for "Da Drought", that would be labeled with "Official Mixtape".

It's only an EP if the artist considers it one... there's some really long EPs out there, and some really short LPs too.

A little delayed on the update.. but I suggest a new feature:

* On bigger albums with famous artists, it would be cool to have a "Older albums by this artist" shortcut on the end of the post, for people who want to peep old stuff or compare with earlier albums, instead of going into the index and find it.. I tried it out in this thread: http://www.dubcnn.com/connect/index.php?topic=200773.0

Here's the code:

Code: [Select]
[hr]

Older Jadakiss albums:
[url=http://www.dubcnn.com/connect/index.php?board=4;action=display;threadid=34214]Jadakiss - Kiss Tha Game Goodbye [/url]
[url=http://www.dubcnn.com/connect/index.php?board=4;action=display;threadid=53247]Jadakiss - Kiss Of Death[/url]

[hr]

For jacking that code ^^ - go into the index, and quote one of my posts, and just copy/paste the URL-code.  8)

the hr-code is to separate it from the rest of the post.

If you do it, put it at the bottom of the first post and not above the leftovers. I'm not gonna help with it though.

Normally, an album is considered an EP if there are seven tracks or less.

Are singles allowed on this forum?

We normally don't post them, but if they have a gang of non-album tracks or remixes, I don't see the problem.

Please, let's credit the recording and mixing engineers. They work very hard on making these albums sounding good.

SP = Single Play
EP = Extended Play
LP = Long Play

There is no definitive definition of these.  Some say it's based on number of tracks, some say it's based on minutes on music.  I say forget about these labels unless the artist uses them in the title.
