Exclusive: Shooting Details Involving Rapper Proof Emerge
By Nolan Strong
An altercation inside a Detroit nightclub led to the death of D-12 rapper Proof after an argument allegedly turned into a gunfight, leaving a bouncer wounded, according to sources.
A source that requested anonymity told AllHipHop.com that Proof was in the club after-hours when a heated verbal argument between Proof and a bouncer allegedly broke out and escalated.
Proof was shot and killed around 4:30 am on April 11 and the bouncer was seriously wounded, both with gunshots to the head.
"Proof knocked dude down and stood over him with gun in hand," a source close to Proof told AllHipHop.com. "Proof shot first. The bouncer on the ground didn't shoot Proof another bouncer did. Proof was shot 4 times. Twice in the head and twice in the chest/stomach area."
Police have identified the second man as 35-year-old Keith Bender.
Bender is alive, but is still in critical condition.
"Dude [Bender] is on life support and not expected to live at all," the source continued.
Investigators are still trying to piece together details of the shooting but have stated they believe two guns were used in the shooting.
According to sources, Proof was licensed to carry his weapon.
Officers have frequently been called to the club, taking 18 incident reports since 1996.
The club was raided in December of 2005 for selling alcohol to minors and Proof's murder was the third time a shooting had occurred at or near the club.
"All this s**t is senseless and real f**ed up. Proof was a longtime friend who wouldn't stay the f**k out the hood. To many jealous people in the hood mad cause you made it.
"8 Mile [road] near Hayes on Detroit's Eastside at 4 am in the morning? That Triple C spot always has drama up there. Why was he there?" the source continued.
The police questioned one witness in the case and seek to speak to others to find suspects.
The club did not have a video surveillance system police, officers revealed.
Proof served as Eminem's best man in the rapper's short-lived wedding to Kim Mathers.
The rapper, whose real name is Deshaun Holton, leaves behind five children.

i was thinking this was the case all day today for some reason
-
The police questioned one witness in the case and seek to speak to others to find suspects.
Which is logic. So far they only got the opinion from someone who was close to Proof, so I don't think that person can comment on the incident objectively...
-
Proof stood over the guy & shot him, then was shot from behind?
either way his life was fucked then, going to jail or dyin
-
thats fucked up proof shot the guy first..really fucked up
-
We don't know for sure if this is what happened, but a few times now it's been brought up.
If proof pulled a gun and shot at a bouncer, he deserved to die.
-
Well, Proof had it coming to him. Live by the gun, die by the gun.
Of course this won't be a wake up call to any other rapper, they will get cash and still live in the hood. Fucking idiots.
Proof's death should be on the next "When Keeping It Real Goes Wrong"
-
think about it... proof was rich, had a family, and was the "mayor of hip hop" in motown. why the fuck would he let himself get behind a trigger like that unless he was insanely drunk and high? the rest of yall seem pretty gullible, cus im not sure at all that he shot first. just think about it.

Think about what you said, "he was either extremely drunk or high"
That sounds to me that he is more likely to pull a gun out. Plus with people saying that he is known to get crazy drunk and wild out on people for the slightest thing.
-
Yeah if events unfolded like they are saying there then that is such a cold blooded insane thing to do that he certainly deserved to rot for what he did. We are merely speculating though I wonder if we will ever hear what really happened, or whether people just keep quiet?

A 28-year-old man suspected of fatally shooting rapper Proof of D12 turned himself in today (April 12).
Mario Etheridge, 28, of Detroit is being detained by the police for allegedly shooting the rapper during an altercation inside of the C.C.C. nightclub.
Etheridge was also a bouncer at the C.C.C. nightclub. Police said he is a relative of Keith Bender Jr., the bouncer who was allegedly shot by Proof during the fight, which took place around 4:30 am Tuesday.
Police said Proof, born Deshaun Holton, pistol-whipped and shot Bender during the fight. Etheridge allegedly open fire on the rapper, striking him four times in the head and chest.
Authorities are still investigating the incident, but police said the 28-year-old was cooperating with authorities.
Bender, a former Sgt. in the United States Army, is on life support in critical condition.

that's crazy...
it makes it a little less tragic in the sense that somebody didn't just shoot him for being a rapper....
doesn't deserve to happen to him tho, even if he did shoot that other guy, he should be alive to deal with the consequences
and also, what that guy said was right - what the fuck is he doin in a terrible neighborhood outside a club at 4 AM? .... stupid shit, people gotta stay away from some scenarios

And there's very few of them

looks as if the whole incident might have been stirred up by proof. this is only speculation as of now but with the bouncer turning himself in and fully cooperating with authorities might suggest that he believes himself to be innocent of any wrongdoing and that he was merely protecting a friend who was shot by proof in the first place. sad part is that he left behind 5 kids. dont know too much bout proof but theres also a chance he barely even knew his kids as well.
-
what i dont get is how there gonna be two shots in the bacc of the head and two in the cheast
-

one bouncer shot him twice in the back of the head (Mario Etheridge), the other bouncer (Keith Bender Jr.) shot Proof in the chest while Proof was standing over him.

Sigh..another young black male dying senselessly over some bullshit.

are the bouncers there even licensed to carry firearms?
-
the bouncer only handed himself in, because he isnt safe on the streets

Pussy Talk. The bouncer that shot and killed Proof apparently saved the other bouncer's life. If you have a weapon permit, it's your responsibility to be honorable enough to defend someone elses life, and that's apparently what happened here. If he wouldn't have killed Proof, Proof would have killed the bouncer.
-
Police said he is a relative of Keith Bender Jr.
If someone shot a friend or a relative of mine and I was standing next to it with a gun, I'd shoot the guy too
still it's fucked up that Proof is gone, R.I.P.

WTF? The bouncer was strapped?

wow you are retarted^^

One thing i've never understood is why people get into a fights and then resort to using a gun? To me that sounds as though they lack the ability to take 'em on in the first place. Surely if you've got a point to prove it's better done more physically than just merely pulling a trigger.
Personally i still think there's a bit more to it, right now there's more details emerging against him than there is for him. But then again if that's what actually happened then he got what was always going to come to him in a 3-1 situation.
-
WTF? The bouncer was strapped?
Yeah but according to a Detroit Police spokesman ''If Proof was shot in self-defense or to protect someone else, the shooter may not be charged.'' The bouncer just may get away with it.

This is very sad.... Fuck that "keep it real" thing , we're talking about a death... Tell that stupid thing his friends or his family :grumpy:
