Title: Planning my trip to the West Coast (Venice Beach & Malibu related)
Post by: CRAFTY on May 13, 2008, 06:10:53 AM
As some of you may know, I've been meaning to go to the West Coast for a while now, but I've finally planned a date: summer of 2009.
I've started planning the trip yesterday bit by bit, and came across some things I'd like to know more about:

On DAY 3 of our stay in the LA area, me & my family would go to Venice Beach in the morning & Malbu in the afternoon. My question is:

Venice Beach:
1) is there anything else worth seeing in Venice Beach beside walking along the Ocean Front Walk?
2) how long would it take to walk along the Ocean Front Walk? I've foreseen about 3 hours. Is that too much or too little time?

Malibu:
1) Since my parents want to lay on the beach for an afternoon, I was wondering what the best beaches in Malibu would be for this. I know Malibu is famous for its surfers, but my parents would like to lay on the beach quietly, not being disturbed by tons of surfers who're yelling or what not. Then again, they don't want to isolate themselves. Just something where most tourists or Malibu residents go? Is Zuma Beach a good place to go? There seem to be lots of beaches in Malibu according to http://www.ci.malibu.ca.us/index.cfm?fuseaction=detail&navid=12&cid=432 , I was just wondering what the 'best' beach is in terms of view/quietness/...
2) Is there anything else worth seeing/going to in Malibu apart from the beach?

Also: is it possible to squeeze in a visit to Santa Monica that same day? Or should I drop Malibu and go to Santa Monica if I want to lay on a beach? Apart from the beach, what else is interesting in Santa Monica?

Thanks in advance WCC 8) I'll be having random questions like the ones above frequently from now on, since planning this trip thoroughly will take a while, so you might see threads like these pop up every now & then.

1.basically, there's just a bunch of stores, food-stands, and bums selling cool shit on the venice strip.. if you're into basketball, they have some good ballers on the courts.
2.i'd cut that 3 hours shorter (2 hours max), but i get bored easily.

1.zuma beach is one of the best beaches out here...that's the one i would recommend.
2.malibu is mostly about the beaches, so i dunno what else you're looking to do there.

santa monica neighbors venice. you'll probably be able to do both santa monica and venice together in 3 hours...santa monica has a mini amusement park...i'd spend 1.5 hours on venice and 1.5 hours on santa monica.

If you come to my town (Huntington Beach) holla at me. I'll show you why HB > Malibu

^^^^Feel free to explain that to me now already ;) My purpose is to plan this trip in advance...so all the info I get right now, I can use it.
By the way: +1 to all of those who already gave feedback. I really appreciate it. Google helps me a lot with planning this trip, but feedback from you guys, who live in the area, is very helpful.

Whatever you do, don't go in the water..... especially at Santa Monica.

That's why i recommended Zuma beach...you can actually go into that water, as opposed to most beaches out here.

because it's nasty and polluted... I don't touch Ocean waters unless it's Pismo Beach or the Monterey area.

^he said his parents wants to relax and lay down on the beach. Malibu>Hunnington in terms of that.
all tho i will agree... i think they will have a better time at HB just because you can relax and laydown... its a huge area... and besides there is alot more to do there than Malibu... and its deffinately a better place to go just to say you been to HB... that is a place where i would want to go to the beach to chill....

i guess i could be bias tho since we are always in HB all summer just chillin and drinking all day and Bon Fire at night... great times.

but a thing you are going to have to consider is transportation..... these places arent exactly close to each other... i hope you guys are planning to rent a car or something to do all this... unless you got family or friends down here to drive you around.

yup venice beach is max 1.5 hours.. aint that much to do there, just a lot of smoke shops, and random stores that sell interesting stuff. its definitely a cool place to soak in the atmosphere.. the beach, the bball courts, the skaters, the musicians, etc..

santa monica, is also 1.5 hours.. well theres the Pier, and also 3rd street promenade, promenade you could prob spend 2 hours there, and pier another 1.5 hours..

Crafty, if you go to Venice Beach and you see this black dude named Mr. Animation doing dance moves for money, tell him Styles (Chilly Chill's homeboy)  said "what's up"... he'll get a kick out of that...

But be sure to drop a dollar in the hat.... I've seen that fool yell at people..lol.

lmao... I remember I was out at Venice with him one time and he starts to tell the crowd as he was asking people to put money in the hat, "I used to rob people. Do you want me to go back to doing that?" I was hiding my face like, "this dude just didn't say that!" Those poor people were startled.... but they gave! :)

in my opinion you can't really go wrong unless you go on the weekend and there's like 4985893475982374589023745897234578 people there to fuck things up, but i personally like the homey feeling of Avila beach, but i really don't care as long as it's not one of those cold ass beaches like Moro Bay.

as far as the water goes for santa monica/venice ....it's not THAT bad:

Yeah, we're goint to rent a car for our trip to the West Coast. Probably a Grand Voyager, since we'll be travelling with 5 persons: me, my brother, my parents & my grandma

I hit up Google Maps and typed in "from Venice Beach to Malibu", and they say it's about 30 minutes by car. Is that about right?

santa monica, is also 1.5 hours.. well theres the Pier, and also 3rd street promenade, promenade you could prob spend 2 hours there, and pier another 1.5 hours..

I've just checked Google for 3rd Street Promenade. Is that a blvd. with lots of shops & restaurants?

In what city is Redondo Beach located?

@ Don Jacob: those pictures you posted, are those taken in Santa Monica?

MAJOR thanks once again to all who gave feedback. It really is appreciated. +1

Redondo Beach is located in Redondo Beach.

visit San Francisco, I went there a few weeks ago and its beautiful, the only thing that sucks over there is the homeless.. As for LA, well theres stuff all over the place, dont forget to visit Hollywood. Go to Hollywood and Highland, walk around, eat, shop, go to the "believe or not" Museum.  The beaches in LA are ALRIGHT, the water is pretty freezing.. It looks nice though.. not to bad.. If you're staying for a long time and have a lot of money to spend I recommend going to Las Vegas, NV. Thats a lot of fun too..

first off... it's just a joke...

second... Compton is not a recommended spot for tourists as anything can happen there.... especially if you find yourself on an unfamiliar street late at night.

Venice is worth checking out to take a walk and check out the promenade.. Hunnington beach is nice as well.

Did you see you'll be hitting up the Bay Area? if So, the drive up from the highway on the coast is beautiful, you'll be driving about 6 hours, right by the water, so beautiful sights, and some nice restaurants by the road to grab something to eat..

Malibu is cool but i didn't think it was too great.. I guess it can be cool to see, but it's a pretty long drive just for that...

Definitely makes sure to check out the record store Amobea in Hollywood, I don't remember where exactly it was but you need to look that up and check it out, great store (atleast it was the last time I went..)

And be careful with fast food restaurants, if it looks dirty, it probably is lol. I fucked my stomach up a couple times eating Chinese food in L.A. lol.

I think you'll realize that L.A. is not a city where you can go for a few days and "see everything"... I mean the area is so big, you'll be driving most of the time.. lol. Now New York on the other hand, you can spend 24 hours in Manhattan just sightseeing.

Yeah, that's what I've been hearing too according to several people who went there on holiday.

Yeah, San Francisco will actually be one of our last stops before ending our trip back in LA. That drive from the highway on the coast...is that the PCH you're talking about?

And yeah, Justin already told me about Amoeba's. I think it's on Sunset. I'll google it...it was already on my list of things-to-do ;)

Thx for the feedback Nima.

Nima is right. Take that PCH trip .... I honeymooned in Monterey and drove back down to L.A. on PCH. It's beautiful but be careful driving. One slip up at certain points can mean a trip over a cliff and in to the Pacific Ocean.

Amoeba's is located on Sunset Blvd. in the heart of Hollywood. It's across the way from the CNN tower. You can't miss it.

theres no way amoebas can shut down. Amoeba's is the reason tower records and virgin and other stuff shut down around LA. All these big independent stores are whats taking over. Rasputin in the bay area, they holdin shit down.

Maybe once CD's stop being produced and manufactured and everythin becomes digital.. then im not sure where the stores are going. but in the between time, Amoebas is definitely goin strong.
