It's classic in a critical acclaim sense but I think it's overrated personally. It'd definitely better than anything Jay-Z has released though.
-
people are allowed to have their own opinions. Who cares as long as you like it.

Fuck opinions! It's a CLASSIC!

thats wats up 8)
-
classic in the sense it chanced production in hip-hop, and that it was the best album between Makaveli and Stillmatic. Classic, no question, anyone who dissagrees should listen to the album.
-
one of the most influential and important rap cds ever released
classic imo
-
i think we can call this a hiphop classic. I mean the sound of current hiphop is still being unfluenced from that record
-
Good album, OVERRATED AS HELL. I don't know about that Jay-Z comment though.
-
It's definitely overrated - that album has a LOT of filler on it, from the skits to bullshit tracks like 'Ackrite' and 'Murder Ink'.
Here's my take - Jay-Z has made albums with less filler, but he's never made an album where the best tracks were as great as the classic cuts on Dre's.
-
For me it's a west coast classic. It's all opinions, don't get mad.
-
most overrated album ever...
-
Shit was such a let down. No way in hell I'd call it a classic.
-
I was personally let down by this album, I liked Streetz Iz A Mutha better which came out at the same time but Jayz also has alot of filler in his so called classic albums so I think it compares somewhat
-
Only the first half is dope, so it's not a classic to me.
-
I still blaze 2001.. 8)
I Gave it the Rank "Classic" After ripping open the package
And hearing Track #2 in 1999. (You had to be there in 99' bro, anticipation was ...)
I hit repeat like x8 before letting the rest play....True Shit'
"The Watcher" still bump's.
01' defo belong's in a Classic discussion IMO.
Smack ya boy 4 me to bro...lol

Chronic 2000>Chronic 2001
-
Yeah that album is FAR from classic. It has some good production. Weak lyrics throughout. And not to menchion the radio played it out so much I can't even listen to it anymore. I got tired of hearing it. . .

fuck the opinions of others. if he don't think it's classic, let him have his opinion, you have yours, it's all about taste. I hate those threads...
-
I'm actually amazed to see so many people here agreeing that 2001 isn't a classic. That's what's great about this board - people know enough about their West Coast shit to stand by their opinions. A lot of people would just automatically say this album was a classic because they think it's the 'right' answer - whoch, of course, for some people it is.
Props all round to those who say what they mean and stand by it. What an awesome board we have here.
-
This is my favourite album of ALL TIME... god damn, this was my first cd I ever bought, and I still play that shit
CLASSIC
-
man all you guys that dont consider this a classic what the heLL?
certified CLASSIC!!!
Changed the game til this day...

I disagree. It has game-changing tracks on it (most of the first half is absolutely perfect). But taken as a whole product it is far from flawless. Most of the second half is average to me - if I play this album I'll probably skip most of the later tracks except Bitch Niggas and Bang Bang.
-
i love this album, its not perfect although the production just about makes it.
only tracks i skip are, whats the difference and the message, and every skit
-
100 % classic...an overrated album to me is kurupts streets is a mutha...no idea how ppl can think thats such a hot album, is it the lyrics or something cuz the production on that album was garbage, for me space boogie blows streets way the hell outta the water 8)
-
classic

HAHA, the production was garbage, kill yourself now
-
overrated if u ask me...
i mean dre albums never stood the test of time in my ears..especially this album..it has all kinds of dust on it.. got damn me .. digital underground's future rhythm gets way more play action than any of dre's album for some reason
-
I fuckin' love every track on there, so it's at least a personal classick 8)
-
LOL for real tho...asside from the dre remix and dmx diss song i wasnt feeling any of the songs when i bought streets...keep in mind i had bought space boogie b4 streets and i guess i was jus expecting sum mind blowing fredwreck and quik beats again ....ill admit maybe the features werent that great but overall i enjoyed space boogie ALOT MORE...shit sounded like 2001 part 2 when i first heard it...each his own tho homie 8)
-
^^^ Kill yourself LOL J/k
-
Great album, just overrated. The OG Chronic however is classic IMO. 2001, no classic.
-
classic to me, production wise the album still sounds fresh in my ears.
and streetz iz a mutha >>>>>>>>>>>>>space boggie.
-
Not a classic.
-
how can you smack someone over the computer?
-

lol, jus jokin, naw streetz is like prob my fav album along with dogg food, so anyone got a problem with streetz got a problem with me lol
-
fuck an opinion, certified classic to me! haha.....but in truth, first half of the album was some of the most influentional shit ever and the second part like some others have said, was weaker, but the second half also had alot of shit from people who were suppposedly the future of the westcoast, and ironically the second half was weaker and a sign of things to come for the westcoast, cuz not many westcoast new cats have risen since then...but yeah, overall easily a classic....certified......but there has been better albums top to bottom no doubt
-
streetz iz a mutha shits on and rapes 2001.
-
I think 2001 has some classic joints but as a hole album it's not as good as OG Chronic... Damn near a classic though and still better than any Jay-z album. Streetz iz a Mutha on the other hand is a personal classic for me... 8)
-
Fuck opinions! It's a CLASSIC!
THANK YOU!
-
Easily a classic, sure it's overated and isn't near as good as The Chronic but it's still a classic.
-
Classic 8)
-
its aiite. i remember buying it the day it came out. Like I was anticipating its release a month in advance, haha. it was pretty good, but not classic. theres too many fillers. the only song i still will bump will prob be still dre. i dont really listen to whats the difference, or forgot about dre, or anything else.
-
whats the difference really annoyed me for some reason
housewife was my joint though
-
whats the difference really annoyed me for some reason
housewife was my joint though
the beat for What's The Difference was bangin but Em's voice on it was annoying, Xzibit ripped it tho
-
I think some of ya'll need to define your definition of classic. To me an classic album is one you can play from start to beggining without skipping a trak. And one that you can play for days and not get tired of it. 2001 is far from that. . .
-
the first Chronic had Snoop, Kurupt, Rage, RBX all great MC's at the time and DOC doing alot of the writing so the lyrics were dope, 2001 suffered from poor lyrics even though it had great production some of the songs were filler material
-
yeah you think it's a classic, he doesnt have to.
-
The shit is a classic period i mean thats westcoast music ten years after alot of shit and the shit banged alot people were blazing to the shit
-
I think it's cool to say this album isn't classic cause it's so popular and fresh in public consciousness. In 15 years when detox has been out for 5 years, there'll be someone talkin' "dude tell my homey detox is the shit" and we'll be like "2001> Detox" or some such shit.
forget the videos, forget the buzz, forget the controversy, forget dre as a person, forget that eminems white, forget whatever bullshit you have stigmatized with this record and listen to the album and seriously explain how this isn't classic.
ackrite-at times, dre's beats will be 'lacking' to focus on the MC. truly great producers know when to turn the music down so the MC is supported by the beat. hitt RIPs this shit and the guitar line on this is stellar.
murder ink-not some shit to chill and coast to like most good west coast music but the bass, drums and Hitt's verse DO the damn thing.
pause 4 porno, i could have done without. outside of that, this is a very subtle record but a nigh immaculate one. it's alot more low-key than the first chronic, not as flashy or in your face. alot of laid back intelligent grooves that don't emngage you immediately but that are certainly timeless( for example, when i was 12-13, 'light speed' used to be a skipper. not that I'm older, it's one of my favorites. you know an albums classic when it can grow with you and vice versa. here's 8 years later and i have a new favorite track like it came out a month ago.)
AND if you really wanna get qualitative, add up how many classic minutes the chronic is and how many classic minutes 2001 has, and even with your alleged 'filler', 2001 has as much classic material on it as the first chronic. it's a huger album.
the lyrics are amazing, it's the topics that are stagnant and even that is intentional.
NOT as good as the chronic, i agree. but classic? definitely. changed the game and pleased the west, who else can still do that?
I can't believe SIAM is being mentioned in this post. SIAM is a west coast classic, one of my favorites but to expect anyone east of arizona to even consider this as a near classic is laughable. dre used stagnant topics on purpose, whereas Kurupt doesn't know anything else.

-
Definently a classic, it's not perfect due to some filler on the second half of the cd, but as I play it at least once every few weeks it has to be classic.

im in wisoconsin and to me SIAM is a classic also.... but i agree with what you sayin
-
thanks vance.back at you.
and miss nwa whoorider, if you didn't get the impression from my post. a classic is an album that has at leasta few tracks that make you say 'damn this shit's bangin', is over-all a consistent cohesive piece(usually an album in which the whole is greater than the sum of its parts) is addictive AND has long term replay value.

Great post.
The songs usually mentioned as filler "Murder Ink" and "Ackrite" aren't even wack they just pale in comparison to the rest of the album cause the rest of the album is THAT GOOD and the skits serve their purpose, they aren't there to fill space but to sequence the album, they usually set up as an intro to the next song.

Who gives a fuck what ure gay ass friend "swears"? This album was an ERA of hip hop just on its own.
-
its a classic you heard
-
Murder Ink was my least favourite on the album, but it's not a bad track.
Even Pause 4 Porno is dope; check out the 2001 instrumentals for proof.
Ackrite & Light Speed are both beats other rappers would kill for to put on their albums.
But hey, if your friend don't like it that's his problem.
-
its a modern day classic man but nothing compares to chronic or doggystyle
-
It's definitely overrated - that album has a LOT of filler on it, from the skits to bullshit tracks like 'Ackrite' and 'Murder Ink'.

"Jay-Z has made albums with less filler" - Bullshit!!!!! Chronic 2001 is a classic!!! 2001 had a grip of tracks!! They may not all be classic songs but no fillers!!
-
A classic is an album that you can listen with the same feelings 15 years after.
-
It's close but not a classic hip-hop album. People call so many albums classics the word loses its meaning.
-
the IMPACT that an album has defines classic, not ure opinion. Chronic 2001 was an ERA on its own for hip hop I repeat, a definite classic.
-
word classics do not have to be perfect from top to bottom, they have to stand the test of time and the impact of an album also plays a huge factor
-
Shit was such a let down. No way in hell I'd call it a classic.
i dont respect your opinion and if i were near you i would slap you with a glove
-

that's true, but this album is not one of those mislabelings.
