What idiot would call a mixtape a top 10 classic?

You obviously not into the Mixtape game. Some of them are basically full fledged albums for free, with original production/lyrics/style. Only reason they can't be sold sometimes, is because Sample issues, or the Artist wants to make a quality product, to build a buzz with out having to put him self out their yet. Cause Contract's will be void if you can't keep up sells. So it helps build buzz.If a artist sells are failing extremely bad (even if its just a debut) then they get dropped from the label. Why waste money producing their album if they can't make it back. Usually Full Album type mixtapes, the artist pays for it himself, or gets free production since no money is being made.

in hip hop "albums" are becoming a dead concept

A 'classic' album is one that was huge, lasted the test of time and considered a masterpeice by many. A mixtape from a few years ago that if released wouldn't sell more than 20k - isn't a classic. Speak to me when you hit puberty.

Ice Cube "Kill At Will" is an EP that qualifies though.

If that's the truth (since this is all opinions, and not a thread called "The number 1 albums that changed rap), then basically only be about 20 or 25 albums tops. Albums we hear about all the time. It wold go something like this (just off the top of my head)

Straight Outta Compton
The Chronic
DoggyStyle
All Eyez On Me
Me Against The World
Illmatic
Rakim's album (money something lol can't remember)
2001
The Documentary (This album is generally credited with helping reinforce West Coast Hip-Hop as a viable area of hip-hop after years of obscurity)
The Slim Shady LP
The Marshall Mathers LP
The Eminem Show
Read 2 Die
Life After Death
Amerikkka's Most Wanted
Kill at Will
Death Certificate
The Predator (Lethal Injection wasn't considered a success at the time of its release, and only got more of a "acclaim" as time went by, yet many people see Ice Cube selling out to the G-Funk era, with it being Gangsta rap with little social conscious stuff)"
It take a nation of millions to hold us back - Public Enemy
Ice T's album "Rhyme pays" I think, it was 1 them I know is constantly brought up when people discuss the creation of West Coast Hip-Hop

Shit's their is possibly more, but I'm thinking off the top of my head, but yeah, not a lot of albums, would be qualified under a "Greats" album. I said it in another thread, on what qualifies a album to be "great" and raise the artist to that level (See the Xzibit be considered a great thread).

But yeah, since this is just "Your" top 10 albums, you might bang out a Mixtape more then a Artist.

The Documentary was my favorite Game album, but do you really concider that a "Westcoast Classic"?

i would say Doctor's Advocate is the Westcoast Classic.

that is Westcoast beats & more of a Westcoast feel than The Documentary.

only a few songs off The Documentary have a Westcoast feel to it, whereas Doc's Advocate is Westcoast from start to finish.

or...is this list just classic albums made by Westcoast artists?

I agree with most of what i've seen. Some of Daz's could come into consideration. pharcyde, heiro, raskass could be up their also.
Qiks ballance and options was almost. Numskulls album was real good. but yeah i think all the dre/warren/dpg/ice cube/n.w.a/2pac are the classics. Ice-T also but hard to choose wich one.

2Pac never had a great album from top to bottom. "Makaveli " was not a great album , it had 4 good cuts and was a let down ( everyone I knew was disappointed with that shit when it dropped ) . "All Eyez on Me " was a mess. It had a lot of filler accompanied by a handful of great cuts . It was rushed and received negative reviews when it came out. A lot of his music , if you listen to it nowadays , is very dated .

LOL you're just a hater man...are you serious? you think 3x Krazy made better "albums" than 2pac???  ???  LOL i love 3x but lets be serious.

i can respect your opinion of not liking songs - but to say Makaveli was not a great album top to bottom is rediculous.  same with MATW, All Eyez, THUG LIFE, and 2pacalypse.

Strictly...I'll admit that had some filler but even the filler material i LOVE.  2pac's filler > 95 % of rappers best music.

None of Keak da Sneak's albums can be considered classic because he never blew up or had an impact on the hip hop genre. A classic means an album that has stood the test of time, not your personal opinion. Might as well change this topic to "people's favorite west coast albums."

Dude, apologize to yourself!! You serious? You're probably talking about The Source when you say bad reviews, they dissed Dogg Food and didn't even rate Chronic or Doggystyle classics. Anyways, my top ten (and I'm South African so I'm limited) in no particular order... Btw Westcoast Rappers are a lot like South African blacks and Coloured (mixed race people) so we're lonely without y'all in the mainstream. And we love The Game!!!!!! Since The Aftermath/ Eminem+50 Cent era my big homies don't even listen to hip hop.

You officially don't know shit, you retarded bastard. Congratulations on officially making your self look like the most ignorant mother fucker on these boards.

While his earlier efforts were good, they weren't Critically acclaimed successes.Even if they did spark controversy.

Me Against The World is were Tupac officially launched into Stardom. Majority of Tupac Fans say That was the first album they got of him (Me mine was 2PACALYPSE NOW, and I just move on from their stopping at Makaveli).

Me Against The World was a critically acclaimed success becoming universally liked winning 4 Mics back when the source wasn't bullshit and actually a respectable publication. It was Tupac's First Album to have a effect in Rap, with many praising the emotion point into it.Also bring to populer lite the "Me Against The World" type mindstate (which rappers will now exploit).

All Eyez On Me is only 1 of 4 albums to go Diamond, has Managed a 5 outta 5 Mics by the Source when it was released, and is consider a classic with in rap. Only thing critics didn't like was the fact all the hits were on the first disk, and the second was filler.

Makaveli - Was praised for its raw aggression, and was praised for its deep and extremely dark and weird content.

I don't even need to go on. You've officially lost your posting privileges, get the fuck off this board.

The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory by Makaveli :o
Dogg Food by Tha Dogg Pound
Safe + Sound (or Rhythm-a-lism) by DJ Quik
We Come Strapped or (Last Man Standing) by MC Eiht
Amerikka's Nightmare by Spice 1
Can You Feel Me by Dru Down
It's On (Dr. Dre) 187 Um Killa by Eazy E

11 Would be Doctor's Advocate by The Game

Oh sorry, I love Dru Down, but I must replace with Westside Connection, Bow Down. I don't know how I forgot that!! Sorry Don Mega!! Fuck it, I would place that write next to Dogg Food!! They really took it to the East Coast and I'll always feel that simply because regional politics destroyed good music, even in my country. In Fact, Westside Connection is the one group that has a perfect record in terms of quality. Both albums are bananas!! Ice Cube even improved on the second one!! Westssssiiiide!!

Yup .. As a matter of fact , I was a fan as soon as he dropped "Trapped " , his first single from his very first album ( I saw him on "Same Song " before that ,but I wasn't blown away by him on that cut ) . I saw Digital Underground in concert in '90 , and Tupac was a dancer on stage . Go back and listen to his shit . For every good cut he made , he made 4 average or bad ones .His persona was what made him larger than life. He was well spoken, handsome , and a real thug all at the same time . Combine that with a few monster hits from average albums , and that is what made him a legend. No classic albums from top to bottom ( maybe "Me Against the World " was close , MAYBE ).

I also forgot to mention "Copium" by Keak Da Sneak , which is in the top 15 for sure.

None of Keak da Sneak's albums can be considered classic because he never blew up or had an impact on the hip hop genre. A classic means an album that has stood the test of time, not your personal opinion. Might as well change this topic to "people's favorite west coast albums."

maybe you should check the first post, to see what this topic is all about

maybe u should stop bein so gay

Just my opinion , though . I respect all of your opinions as well . Look at my list closely , all of them are important albums , from the bay to L.A. Keak's album was an award winning album in 2002 . They had those awards going in the bay for a few years , until some violence broke out .

Shit....Top 10 album sells well....

Only 4 albums have managed Diamond Status (All Eyez On Me, The Marshall Mathers LP, Life After Death, and another I can't remember). Even then The True sells have constantly been debated, TMMLP was the fastest selling album in history, and was consistently certified, so it would Look like a clear winner, but its not, because The other 3 albums above haven't been certified again to match correct sells, its hard to figure out which 1 is the highest selling.

Infact, Makaveli Is said to be 4x last it was Certified by the RIAA, but a document said its world wide sells are 27 million or something. Again, because Labels don't shell out to keep the Album's sells pinpointed (possibly because after awhile the contract just runs out or something) its hard to tell.

Highest selling rappers are said to be Tupac, Eminem (supposedly the current highest, do to Relapse dropping, and Tupac's sells not being certified again, once a new pac album drops it might revert.), Dr. Dre in third, and Biggie.

Though I think Dr. Dre and Biggie might be reversed. They said sells from Dr. Dre's The Chronic/2001 have beat out Biggie's 2 albums on a WORLD scale so he makes the third. But again, because of the failure to keep proper records after a certain amount of time its extremly hard to tell. All we know is that the Established 2 highest selling rappers are currently Tupac/Shady.

You're thinking of Outkast - Speakerboxxx/The Love Below

Where are you getting these figures? How do you figure Dr. Dre is a best-selling artist with only two albums released? I'm fairly certain Jay-Z and 50 Cent have sold more albums than Dr. Dre.

The Makaveli Figure (of 27 million, I know it was around their) was off a Court document when it came to Tupac's Album rights.Even if you flood the Market with more then enough albums like 2PAC It took Eminem only half his releases to match/possibly beat Tupac in sells.

The Chronic was a High selling album outside the US and 2001 (with some help by the Up in Smoke Toury) Helped drew people both to the new release and his first one.Just Because Jay-Z and 50 have a lot of high selling albums out, its not matching the sells of Dre's. Mainly because I think Dr. Dre. after the entire Death Row stint/Slim Shady LP release (And eventually TMMLP) had become a brand name for quality. From N.W.A, to The Chronic, Finding Shady, To 2001. It was probably hype. Look on this board, even when it came to Dre's worse production, people still said "not really bad, just good, but not his usual amazing" So some hype was a figure also.
