who?
-
Kurupt's first 10 years... hands down.
But Nas has been more consistent thorugh the years. I like Kurupt better though.
-
NaS without a doubt. i picked kurupt over nas when i was younger but now that im oldier, wiser, classier & more into substance! I pick nas.
-
as much as I love Kurupt's first 3 albums and alot of his catalog he can't see Nas period... Nas fell off 99-01 but bounced back major has been been consistent since, Kurupt still has it but has been inconsistent for a minute, not to say he's wack
as a freestyler though him > Nas
-
i prefer kurupt.
-
I listen to more Kurupt tracks than Nas tracks, but I'd say Nas is better and more consistent, despite a few hiccups here and there in his career. Plus Nas has a lot more to say, from an artistic standpoint. For example, I always admired the song "Dance" by Nas ever since it came out, but it grew more meaningful to me over the past couple of years when my own mom was fighting cancer and eventually passed away earlier this year, since that was the subject content of Nas's song. Kurupt never moved me like that. Not that that was my criteria, but it's something that sticks out in my head.
-
Nas by a long way
But Kurupt was once contender for the greatest Gangsta Rapper of all time
-
Kurupt for sure. Been playing that nigga's music for a long ass time and gonna keep playing it.
Nas has some classic songs, but a lot of his work is pretentious and corny to me, and I don't like their East Coast sound.

Overall: Nas
Pound 4 Pound in their prime tho...
'92-95 Kurupt Vs. '94-'99 Nas, it's 50/50 for me.
-
People shouldn't be surprised that Kurupt is winning on a forum about WEST COAST RAP…don't be a follower and act like Nas is better for all people just because his technical skill is superior…people listen to rap music for more than the words rhyming.
Kurupt > Nas
-
its a shame they only did 1 track together in their prime...
-
its a shame they only did 1 track together in their prime...
and nas got the best of him i think
-
Nas because he has two albums that I could bump from begining to end and Kurupt only has one...
-
Well since there's nothing specific, I'm going with Kurupt.
Nas is an awesome lyricist but when Kurupt was at his best, he'd smash anyone on any given day. What separates Kurupt to me was his versatility. Kurupt could do G tracks with the biggest G's and blend is a G himself. At the same time, he could hook up with straight Hop Hoppers and backpackers, and switch his style lyrically. Even though Nas spit some G sht, he was never a real gangster. Nas has always been a pure Hip Hop artist at heart and Illmatic proves it.

yeah i see what you mean but nas is more versatile in that he touches on many more topics than Kurupt. Kurupt is a battle MC first and foremost and while he was good at it he's a bit limited. also Kurupt's prime was very short.
-
Had more fun and created more memories listening to Kurupt.
Kurupt and Nas could go toe to toe.
With that said Nas has more classic material, his music is more timeless and more mature than kurupt.
-
Nas by far. Kurupt was untouchable in his prime yeah but those days are long gone.
-
Hands down, Nas.
-
Hands down, Nas.
final answer?

REALLY tough call. Big fan of both, love multiple albums from both. Back in the day i def would have said Kurupt but these days i'd probably say Nas. Really hard call though, some Nas albums are weak and he has done some whack shit. Nas and Kurupt have both kind of dissed their white fans too :-\
Nas got more solo's Kurupt done all them DPG albums.
I think both artist have matured but i agree with some of the other comments, Nas has probably touched on more subjects and done more mature songs.
I was like 13 when illmatic came out and when DPG was big so child hood memories of both. CANT decide!

Anyone can link that fairly recent video where they freestyle together during a gig rehearsal?

Ah not Kurupt so much i mean all kurupt really said was that he dont need white folks, he gets ghetto grammies.
Nas straight out said that he dose not need his white fans and made a few other comments on the self titled album that he wanted to call "n*gger".
Was weird seeing as before that he was all saying that Eminem was good for hip hop and it brings whites n blacks togher and putting black n white kids toghter in that music video "i can" ?
anyways..
But yeah showing my age i like some of them songs Nas done on recent albums, um the one where he sampled frank sinatra "can forget about you"? and the one with Amy Whinehouse "cherry wine"
-
Damn. This forum sucks. Too many retards.
what is your answer?
Kurupt was crazy on dogg food, latter he was meh, here and there some good tracks, last 10 years, sucks. Nas all day.
-
Kurupt because I don't like nas because all his albums after gods son album where boring to me. Same goes for jigga after the black album I don't like his stuff.

Ya I guess he contradicts himself.
I find old westcoast music in general becomes very dated compared to some of the eastcoast stuff because of the lyrics.

Yeah that's why I said that Nas was more of a Hip Hop artist at heart. Kurupt did a bunch of G shit, even though he does have several tracks with different topics. I think Kurupt's problem was that he didn't have guidance with making his albums. If a guy like Dr. Dre would have produced his albums, he'd have better structure and more balance overall with the material he released. Kurupt didn't always talk about the same sht. Nas for example tried to copy a lot of Pac's style. But if you listen to [It was Written], he kept it mostly on the same topics, with street rap n shit because that's what was hot at the time. People forget that G Rap was taking over and everybody was on that. [Illmatic] was more who Nas has always been. Kurupt could switch it up though. It wasn't all the same. Problem is that those songs never stood out like the rest. Kurupt never had a hit like "The World Is Yours". Then Kurupt fell off as he got older so we didn't even get to see him make songs with a more mature point of view. But he could still switch things up if he wanted.

yeah Kurupt had more styles than Nas...he was a gangsta rapper but could turn around and do the east coast lyrical rap like"You know my steez" remix for instance...he could make the dope R&B cut as well "We Can Freak It""Under Pressure"...But Kurupt also fell flat on his face when he tried to go pop with "Its Over"

Yeah. Even when he hooked up with the WU and Pete Rock in "Tru Master". Kurupt could go from Coast to Coast and blend in with everyone. That's why Kurupt was my fav growing up. Only thing he was never able to do as a Solo artist was create that mainstream hit. He had underground, gangster and street classics but never anything that topped the charts. In a sense he has always been more of an underground artist. A Legend but not commercial level. I think he lacked guidance. Most of the commercial hits he was involved in, he was the feature... but never solo.
-
i think he doesn't have the charisma to carry a hit single on his own, kinda like Daz. he'll be forever known as one of snoop's and dre's homie (sadly), but We Can Freak It had mad commercial appeal to me and is a classic. So in a sense he was capable of crafting radio friendly gems, it's just that it never really caught on.

This is probably a cardinal sin to say on Dubcc, but as much as I like Kurupt I was never into that song. Definitely agree with you on his difficulty to make singles.

well to each his own, i understand you, there's a lot of songs people seem to love i don't enjoy or find really good either (daz's in california)

"Who Ride With Us", "Girls All Pause" made some noise at that time they dropped though no?
granted I was mad young and just remember seeing the videos on tv lol not sure how they did on radio especially here on the east

One factor people aren't taking into account:
Kurupt has a lot more GAME than Nas. Young Gotti is one of the most entertaining gamed-up rappers on the planet.

Yea but those never topped the charts. You heard them in clubs and parties 24/7 but they weren't mainstream nation wide. In LA, they were poppin though!

how exactly is he gamed up ? it's not like his raps are full of wisdom or credible street tales, lol. Kurupt is a dope battle mc than rhyme nicely, but not what you would call a rapper with game ala E-40
-
Nas' last album just solidified him as the GOAT.
As much as I love Kurupt, this is NO comparison.
-
I go with Nas.
I like both arists tho.
Nas just has that teecher in him that helped me when growing up, his story telling and morale is outstanding for us who grew up to his music.
Nas is a G to me, the laid back kind - that was always reflecting from all sides.
Kurupt flow and word play is cool to tho, but i always pref'd Daz to Kurrupt.

Tbh Kurupt is my favorite rapper but he isnt seeing Nas consistency or accomplishments in the game
-
Kurupt has better songs and better beats on his albums , Nas is a great rapper and has deep lyrics with deep poetry but about 60 to 70 percent of his beats and music is boring . Nas loses points for having weak beats and bad production on some of his albums .
If we are talking about just by pure rapping skills then i would say Nas , if we are talking about albums and all around good songs i would say Kurupt ... """ Dogg Food , Kuruption The westcoast side , Space boogie , Tha Streetz iz a Mutha ''' I liked all those albums .
-
sad that kurupt waited til his prime was done before dropping a solo LP
imagine Dogg Food with more Kurupt and less Daz on the mic but still Daz involved on beats
-

Yeah, I thought Life Is Good was great. And people saying that Nas fell off in the mid-late 200's- what about the "radical pterdoactyl dinosaur fuck a bitch" Kurupt we got? Just the fact alone that dude didn't even release an album when he was in his prime says it all for me. I love Kurupt but as far as solo albums it's not even close.
-

yeah its like that.. kurupt has a good ear for beats, lack of that alone can break an MC... however he's done some shit like "It's Over"
illmatic puts nas on top though
-
I used to love Nas for long years since i first heard him, he was very influential in my life after 2Pac, but then came Kurupt and brought some fire.
Nas very point is his poetry but he's only NYer, while Kurupt's point is that he can do East Coast not only West - he's wider in that case. Just like Game said: west coast rapper with NY state of mind.
-

Hold up so your saying Kurupt's album's Tha Streetz Iz A Mutha and Space Boogie were not good albums ?
-
Kurupt's first 10 years... hands down.
But Nas has been more consistent thorugh the years. I like Kurupt better though.
They are both inconsistent, just inconsistent in different ways. Like for Kurupt he went from being flawless in the mid-90's, then lost a step but still dope from 97-2001, to totally falling off the face of the fuccing Earth...
...Nas on the other hand, started with a classic, then laid bricks until the Jay-Z beef and his mom dying produced classics with Stillmatic and God's Son, only to fall off again, then come back again strong with Hip-Hop Is Dead and Distant Relatives.... only to lose his footing again with his new album... (not to mention he has loads of classic unreleased tracks like "Amongst Kings" and "Darkness" and Lost Tapes and other scattered leaks, etc...
Point is, for Kurupt it went from bad to worst, while for Nas he has bounced back and forth throughout his career with classics and bricks.
VOTED FOR NAS
-
I absolutely loved Kurupt when he was in his prime, he used to kill EVERY DAMN track or feature he did, after that he kinda fell off but was still strong, "Tha Streetz" was a very nice album. "Space Boogie" was a bit of a mess but still a couple dope tracks. But after that he fell off even more and nowdays he is completely unlistenable (a few dope tracks scattered through his discography of the last years here and there, but thats not helping much) and that has been the case for years now. He basically fell off from one of the dopest rappers EVER to complete shit.
Nas on the other hand may had some little lowpoints here and there and a crap ass album, but he's never fallen off as bad as kurupt. You can actually still expect a dope verse from him. So my vote goes to Nas. Kurupt in his prime was better than Nas, but after that and the time were he was still relatively dope he fell off hard as hell.
-
The thing with Kurupt is that he still has massive potential. If Dr. Dre does ever drop another album, you can bet money on Kurupt stepping up his game for it (don't get me wrong, some of his verses on 2001 were terrible but I always look at 'Xxplosive' as a freestyle verse). Kurupt needs Dre to make him take his time and make his verses perfect like he made him do from '92 - '95.

nas the better overall solo artist and a far more consistent lyricist, but i'd rather bump some prime kurupt
-
but i'd rather bump some prime kurupt
That's 11 or so tracks vs 11 or so albums from Nas

prime kurupt is anything he did during his first run with death row...much more than 11 tracks
-
Kurupt's first 10 years...
Life Is Good was a very enjoyable album, don't know what's not to like about it.

Yeah, that sums it up well. Just sucks that Kurupt's prime was so short relative to his entire career.

Illmatic is often considered as the top hip hop album of all time but I find It Was Written more enjoyable as well 8)
