I know my little homees on the board, another 50 cent topic. But this was not expected..
50 Cent Discounted at Box Office
He may have sold a lot of CDs but rapper 50 Cent can’t seem to get his fans into theaters.
It’s either because of the shooting in a Pittsburgh theater that killed one fan this week, or it’s simply a matter of little interest in the subject matter.
On Friday night, “Get Rich or Die Tryin’,” the violent biopic about Curtis Jackson (famous for being shot nine times and then becoming the owner of much jewelry) finished in fourth place behind “Chicken Little,” “Zathura” and “Derailed.” It only narrowly beat out fifth place Jarhead with a take of $4.5 million.
Since opening on Wednesday, "Get Rich" has brought in only $13.8 million. If you add in a possible $9 million more for tonight and tomorrow, it will have $24 million under its diamond-crusted bling-bling belt. That’s not the blockbuster Paramount could have been hoping for, but maybe DVD sales are where the action is on this title.
(Story continues below)

The number of people who will have seen "Get Rich" in five days is kind of interesting when you think about it. That $24 million, at ten bucks a pop, translates into 240,000 tickets sold. If some tickets went for a little less, we could be generous and say 300,000 fans of the rapper made it through turnstiles — and maybe in some cases metal detectors — to see their idol.
But 50 Cent’s albums, at least by Universal Music Group’s accounting, have each sold millions in an equivalent time period. And oddly enough, there is currently no 50 Cent album or soundtrack album on the Billboard Top 100. 50 Cent’s “The Massacre,” which was released nine months ago, is No. 30 on the Billboard Hip Hop/Rap chart. The movie has generated no heat for 50 Cent’s music at all.
So the question is, where are those fans and why didn’t they pour in to theaters this weekend to see their man? It’s certainly no fault of director Jim Sheridan or even Paramount marketing. They did their best. Maybe the answer is that there aren’t so many 50 Cent fans in the first place. That would raise some other questions, certainly.
Weekend Box office only not total Website is boxofficemojo.com
Chicken Little 11 million
Zathura 5 Million
Derailed 4. 8
Jarhead 4.4
Get Rich or Die Tryin 4.3
Saw 2 3.3
Zorro 2 2.29

Sorry fellas, But I dIdn't see this coming. I thought he had so much controversy the little TRL crowd would go out and see it. But, I guess he found out real music fans like us on the board, thought about all the shit he's started with numberous mc's and said fuck- it. Hell, Roger Ebert gave the movie 2 thumbs up. Only the second time for the rap genre type movie. He deserves it..

Also, people are tired of hearing his story lol. Everybody knows it.

and no one wants to waste money on a movie, in which the main character mumbles through his liines without showing any emotion

This is the beginning of the end. I was expecting the movie to be huge, but 50 is losin' his steam.

No one believed me 6 months ago when I said G-Unit is falling off. Then Tony Yayo's album came out and everyone hopped on the bandwagon.

I've been saying the same shit way before Yayo flopped too. I don't think we will see anymore G-Unit albums in store for a while.

Olivia is gonna flop. Spider Loc? Who da fuck is that? ;D

Olivia already has flopped basically, hasn't she had two singles out or something?

Check the facts buddy, hes #30, on the top 100 albums chart. And these are estimates, I bet it sold over 30 million. I wouldn't trust Fox news with anything.

yeah, those lines are confusing. one line totally cancels the other line out!
-
Wow. I'm surprised. I though this movie would draw a massive crowd with all the advetrisments and hype. G-Unit is truely on its way down.
-
Also, people are tired of hearing his story lol. Everybody knows it.
yeah we've heard the whole "i got shot 9 times" thing for 3 years now. besides that, you're not supposed to have a story-of-your-life movie this soon in your career
This is the beginning of the end. I was expecting the movie to be huge, but 50 is losin' his steam.
yeah im was expecting 13 mill the first day
-
well if so many people didnt keep getting killed in the lobby maybe there'd be more patrons.
-
yeah, why pay $10 for something you know the ending to ::)
I thought it would be huge though just because the public is so stupid
good news though
-
Even if the movie had a good story, he's a horrible actor (from what i could tell from trailers and such).
Hopefully they'll break even :) with all the movie budget, salaries, promotions....
-
50 did everything he could to hype the shit out of this, he was all over bet/mtv and i'm assuming interscope paid for all kinds of spins for his singles on mtv/bet trying to repeat the "8 mile" formula. he was probably happy about the shooting because of the hype and attention it would generate, etc.
i'm not surprised at all (i didn't think it would do well):
-people are tired of hearing the same thing over and over again
-most of the ads i saw were on mtv/bet targeting that crowd, and i didn't see a lot of promotion in other places outside of that in terms of television advertising. it was a really targeted ad campaign, and compared to the ads for the movie with jennifer aniston, the one with the kids or whatever, etc. it didn't really stand out as a choice for most normal moviegoers.
-i never saw 8 mile, but the tie-ins with eminem's album and the soundtrack actually worked and fit the movie in a compelling way that made people want to see it. the soundtrack was doing great and from what i understand the song really represented the movie, we didn't see a similar kind of song off the get rich or die tryin' soundtrack that would have appealed to people to see the movie the same way (the singles were utter shit)
-bad reviews can do a LOT to hurt a movie. normal people rely on reviews to figure out what to watch, and really help determine the kind of word-of-mouth a movie has. a bad word-of-mouth can kill a movie in the long run, and this movie looked SHITTY (wooden acting, generic plot, etc.)
we knew the competition and all of this other shit going in, makes a lot of sense it wouldn't do well. i didn't see anything that made me remotely want to watch the movie.
-
so, next to flop will be the bulletproof game.. ::)
-
8 Mile did twice as much in it´s opening week.

50 is finally learning the hard way what I've been saying all along...if you over-saturate the market with your presence, people will get tired of you too quickly. The most successful career rappers (Snoop, Jay-Z, Ludacris, etc.) are the ones who know how to keep their fans craving for more, which means liberally releasing albums, putting out merchandise, doing movies, etc. on a semi-frequent basis. None of them sell 10 million records right off the bat with each release, but they've cultivated loyal fanbases so that they're assured of going at least Platinum every time. 50, in comparison, has been throwing out endless new material aimed solely at pop audiences - and pop audiences have short attention spans. Once you've been in their face long enough, they get tired of you. MC Hammer made this mistake 15 years ago, Master P and Diddy both made it during the late-90s', Ja Rule made it only a few years ago, and now 50 is doing the same thing.
It's been pretty obvious for a while now that G-Unit is not the hip-hop empire 50 has been trying to build. Yayo's album flopped, Olivia's album keeps getting pushed back, Spider Loc's album is nowhere in sight, and the rest of 50's new soldiers (Mobb Deep, M.O.P., Mase, etc.) are obviously not going to be doing much except guest appearances anytime soon. In 2006, I have a feeling we're going to see G-Unit fall spectacularly. Remember when 50 said that he was going to have Fat Joe and Jadakiss releasing on Koch by the time he was done with them? That's what's going to happen to him if he's not careful.

LOL!

THE MISSISSAUGA NEWS
Rapper's movie draws police attention
Louie Rosella
Nov 10, 2005
Security measures are in place and paid-duty police officers have been hired at Mississauga's movie theatres as the highly-anticipated film depicting international rap star 50 Cent's gang- and violence-riddled life, hit the big screens Wednesday.
Two female employees at the Famous Players theatre on Rathburn Rd. expressed their fear yesterday with the type of crowd the movie generated on opening night.
"It wasn't a comfortable environment to be in at all," said the 16-year-old, who asked to remain anonymous. "I was getting all kinds of looks from customers and they were dressed really shady."
Peel police said there has yet to be any major incidents relating to the movie, but a source confirmed paid duty officers were hired by Famous Players to monitor at least two theatres in the region Wednesday and Thursday nights.
The controversial movie, Get Rich or Die Tryin', portrays 50 Cent's climb to fame, starting back with his involvement with guns and gangs. It includes several of the shootings the multi-platinum artist has survived.
Pat Marshall, vice-president of communications for Cineplex Galaxy, which owns Famous Players, said extra security is brought in for situations that may present problems for staff and guests, but wouldn't comment on the 50 Cent movie specifically.
"Security and safety of our guests as well as our employees is of paramount concern," she said. "But I won't comment on anything relating to any specific film in terms of our security measures in any way. The more information people have about security measures, the easier it is for them to try to get past them."
Marshall would only say that security measures are in place in a number of different areas of each theatre, "covering a variety of different initiatives."
Theatre staff has also been trained to deal with security issues if they arise, she said.
Marshall also wouldn't comment on the police presence.
"We do use paid duty police officers where we think it's appropriate, and we don't hesitate to bring them in," she said.

its just a bad fucking movie cause he tries to be so gangster and he cant even act
-
'Gangsta, gangsta, I\ll tell you how you do it, acting as bad as you do,there ain't nothing to it...'
it does remind me of Game's line '50 Cent's fans love him...just a little bit!'
-
strange - i expected this movie to do well.
-
this is more a documentary than a movie, isn't it? and i expected to sell, and 4,5 mil I think it's enough for a gangsta wannabe...anyway i haven;t saw it yet...so i can't pronounce myself until then
-
only reason the movie isn't doing that good iz cuz his fanz arent old enuff to get in... my 7 year old nephew loves 50 cents muzic.... 8)

LMAO never thought about it like that. You're probably right though.
-
Hey, here's some real irony: "Get Rich Or Die Tryin" opened behind "Derailed", which is Xzibit's new movie (or at least, he has a pretty big role in the movie).
-
"Chicken Little" and that wanna-be ass Jumanji movie stomped that mtuhafucka out.

yeah you're right
I don't like Eminem but "8 Mile" wasn't a bad movie and he wasn't a bad actor imo
50 Cent looks awful and the fuckin movie looks like shit, even though some thing in it are true it just looks forced and fake

What the article brings up, but doesn't mention, is my theory: I don't think 50 Cent has that many die hard fans.
You look @ people like Eminem, he's got people that hang on everything he does, and most of them are white or young teenage girls, or whatever. He has a definite following.
Look @ Jay Z. He has fans that dig everything he puts out, and others (like me) that may not consider themselves fans, but he has their respect.
Look @ Dr. Dre. Tons of respect, everything he does generates a buzz because of the high quality associated with anything he touches.
Look @ Snoop. Die hard fans who think he's cool and buy everything he does.
I don't see 50 with that kind of a fan. Who's buying his shit? Maybe at first, he had tons of fans, but it's dropped off now to where all he has left are casual fans that like his music simply because this song's alright or that beat's hot. I don't think he's got many fans who are all 50 cent 50 cent 50 cent and buy everything he puts out. I just don't see it. So what that translates to is, you're not going to have 300 thousand 50 cent fans going to see his movie, you're going to have 300,000 moviegoers who want to see an urban drama so they go see the new movie that 50 cent is in, not for him but just because it's a movie aimed at that urban audience.... which is why it didn't do huge. 8 Mile was aimed at more than that audience, and Eminem had such a strong fan base of teeny boppers on top of his casual hip-hop fans, and the urban audience that it was aimed at, that the appeal crossed over and he drew in evvvvverybody. My manager has two teenage white girls, all of them love that movie and bought the DVD, the soundtrack, everything. 50's stuck with the 300,000 people who went to the movies specifically to see that type of movie, Eminem was able to draw in people who wouldn't normally see an Urban flick. BTW, Ice Cube did the same thing several times successfully, "Barbershop" and "Friday" were urban comedys but crossed over to larger audiences due to good reviews, good acting, word of mouth, and well written movies. 50 has horrible reviews, horrible word of mouth (no pun intended), and it's apparently not a very well written movie, so he's stuck with his urban audience.
