Did you prepare for them?  I didn't,  but I heard that if you did it really didn't help that much.

Post by: Maradona on July 18, 2004, 05:16:00 PM
Taking the test for the first time, I was aiming for a 1300, but only got a 1280. That's without any studying, practice tests, etc.; I just walked in and took the test. I was so pissed because 20 points is about one question, so I thought I could do it. The second time I went, I thought to myself that "I'm going to score 1300 for sure". I took the test and ended up scoring 1480. Pretty cool feeling.

1090

610 - English
480 - Math

Fuck SAT's though, they don't prove shit. I didn't do good because there's so much riding on that fucking test and I got really nervous. I finished school with a 3.86. I know muhfuckas that got 1300's or 1400's on their SAT's and they have 2.6's.

Which one is more reliable, the 4 year record of grades you got in highschool, or the 3 hour test?

no lol.  if you wanna go to a four year school you have to take your SAT's regardless of where the school is.  Only way around it is if you wanna do a year at a community college.  if thats the case than they dont even check out you SAT scores.  your SAT scores are taken to give schools an idea of how you may do in your first year of college.

Has anybody done better their second time? Statistics show that you actually do worse the second and thrid time of re-taking the SAT. I know I fit under those stats.

I did 40 points better the second time, and it was 40 points better all on verbal ???  The test seems fucking random.

Yeah, it's very random. It has no pattern so it seems illogical to use it.

I think the only reasons colleges use it is because they wanna narrow down the amount of applicants.

1280, and then 1390 second time...

i think it was 700 math 690 verbal... dont really recall.

i used to always score 800 on all the math practice tests.. but for some reason i guess when the test actually came i didnt do so well.. the math usually is pretty fucking simple.. and nothing too complicated at all..

the verbal seems kinda hard. like they try to fuck u over with all the big ass words. but the trick is to just use process of elimination for the multiple choice.. that usually gets you the right answer pretty easily...

how does that work then?

and how does this SAT thing work, dont you get results by subject?

over here we take 'GCSE' (general certificate of secondary education) they're split by subject.. and graded so that you can get A, B or C, D, E, F, G or U (ungraded) a 'C' or above is considered a pass.  (they used to be called 'O Levels' but thats before even my time..)

each one is for a specific subject, you get to choose before the last 2 years of school, but general you're forced to take english, maths, and a second language. its rare to do 2 second languages, but i managed to because they thought i was good enough to pass both. (u'll see they were wrong.. lol)

I got a' C' grade for Englsih, Maths, Physics (but i did an extended paper for that) and French (did a higher paper for that too).  i got 'd' for chemistry and german.. (and a few more 'd's.. for CDT, media studies and a few more.. oh anda  'g' for history.. lmao)

after that depending where you go you end up doing either A Levels or a BTEC diploma (which comes in two or there levels foundation, national, and higher). btec's are generally a more practical qualification. i was gonna do a levels in computer science but the college stopepd doing it, so i ended up at another college doing a diploma course..

Title: Re: SAT scores

We have the SAT and SAT II.

SAT = Verbal (reading comprehension, vocabulary, analogies) & Math
On each section you can earn up to 800 points.

The SAT II's are similar to the GCSE you describedl; Writing & Math are required, and you basically get to choose your 3rd subject (foreign language, history, physics, chemistry, biology, etc)

Again, each section is out of 800 points.

The scoring system is a bit weird. + points for right answers, no points for blank ones, - points for wrong ones; at the end they use a formula to convert your points to a score that would be out of the 800. They take into account the difficulty level of the test at that time by comparing it to other people's scores (curve).

I think that pretty much sums it up.

We also have AP (Advanced Placement) courses which basically cover college courses, meaning you don't need to take that class in college if you pass the test at the end of the year. Those tests are all subject-specific. For example, I passed the AP Calculus BC test, so now when I go to college I won't need to take any math, since it covers Calculus I and II. That's all that's required for the General Education requirement.

thx for explaining it, it does kind of make sense.. originally it seemed like the SAT encompassed everything, whereas its just like a combination of english and math.

so do most people do SAT and some SAT II suibjects?

over here at least employers and colleges (for entrance) often ask for "gcse math and english' at C grade to go on certain level courses (or for doing a levels).

i guess thats roughly the same as having a decent SAT :)

SATs are required by pretty much every college (some colleges will accept the ACT, a similar test that includes science and history). SAT II's are required by SOME colleges.

Colleges ask for SAT scores, but employers here never ask for it...LOL that sounds kinda funny. While you're attending college, and apply for a job, you would normally include your overall GPA.

i dont think we have an equivalent to that

the us system sounds easier coz we have to do as levels followed by a levels, before we can get into a decent university (college - us) as well as also having done GCSEs which is 3 years in a row of exams , but over there its just one bunch of exams right! thats so unfair :P just finished my a levels probs got afew e's wont get into uni & will hav to work at maccy d's :( :D lol

i dont think we have an equivalent to that

GPA = Grade Point Average

A=4
B=3
C=2
D=1
F=0

Let's say you earn 2 A's, 3 B's, and 1 C; that's 2(4)+3(3)+2 = 19
19/6(classes) = 3.17

I almost had to take the SAT's.  It was all scheduled and everything.  I was being scouted by some colleges in the States, but then I fucked up my shoulder and ruined my baseball career  :'(

yeah i dunnoa bout other places.. but all the university ofcalifornias require SATs and SAT 2's...Cal state's dont require the SAT 2's , but require the first one.. i got fuckin lazy in high school and didnt feel like writing a application essay or take the SAT 2's even though i did fucking good on the sat 1's...  but yeah i regretted that.. but i made it up to myself by going to CSU for one year, and then went back home for community college for one year, and now i transferred to UCSB....
but shit.. i dont know about other places either, but at the UC's the gpa is calculated fucking wack.. instead of just set A=4, B=3, C=2..etc.. they have different GPA levels for A, A-, B+, B, B-, shit like that... so a B- is actually less than a 3.0.. and a B+ is actually more than a 3.0 , and A- is actually less than a 4.0, and so on... i got fucked over cos of this grading system.. now i gotta choose a whole different major, and rework my whole plan.. im fucked.

LOL, yup, that's why at the UC schools it's worth talking to your teacher about your grade. Sometimes if you're able to convince them, and they will take off that -, or add the +.  :)

Damn... people here did great on the SAT. I had one of the tope scores in my school... a 1040... lol. For reals, that was considered great at my school. I didn't study, I didn't bring a calculator. My dad woke me up, and said "You have to take the SAT" and I was like, for reals, I forgot. So I drove there half asleep and took the test. Both times the same way. Got into college and graduated, so who gives a fuck. After Affirmative Action got dumped in California, I still got accepted into my schools, and I only had a 2.8 overall GPA, and a 3.3 GPA my junior and senior year. I have no clue how I got into college, I put white on applications (for reals, I was into this whole I'm white 'cause Latinos won a court case deal), there is not logic how I got accepted to my colleges. Oh well. I ended up going to Minnesota, which made it known I was accepted to increase the multicultural population, and I still graduated and left much for that school.

English = 390, which was considered just garbage
Math = 650, which was the highest in my school

SAT II

I was suppose to take writing, but fucked up and took lit = 400
History = 560
Math - 640
