The second annual Vibe Awards, an evening meant to honor hip-hop and R&B, was disrupted by a melee Monday night (November 15).
Reports are sketchy, but according to eyewitnesses, as Snoop Dogg and Quincy Jones were onstage getting ready to present Dr. Dre with the Vibe Legend Award, Dre was attacked backstage. Witnesses said Dre was standing next to his wife when the man approached in a friendly manner, and then all of a sudden starting punching the rapper/producer in the head, landing at least one blow. When bodyguards and people with the G-Unit jumped in to protect Dre, things quickly got out of control both backstage and in the audience.
At one point, witnesses said, Suge Knight got onstage and yelled, "F--- the G-Unit," then hurled insults at the crowd. While there were some reports that a man with the G-Unit's entourage was stabbed, a spokesperson for the group had no comment on the matter. Some audience members were reportedly maced during the outbreak of violence.
After the dust settled at least 10 minutes later, the show went on. The audience at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, was then treated to a performance of "Drop It Like It's Hot" by Snoop with Pharrell Williams. Jadakiss also performed and was joined by Anthony Hamilton and Common.
The Vibe Awards are scheduled to air Tuesday at 8 p.m. on UPN.

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) - A fight broke out near the stage at the Vibe awards ceremony as rapper Snoop Dogg and producer Quincy Jones were preparing to honor Dr. Dre., and one person was stabbed, authorities and witnesses said.
Dozens of people sitting near the stage Monday inside a hangar at the Santa Monica Municipal Airport began shoving each other as the show wound down about 7:30 p.m., a photographer who covered the event for The Associated Press said.
News video showed chairs being thrown, punches flying, people chasing one another and some being restrained.
It was unclear if the stabbing preceded or followed the fight. The victim, a 26-year-old man, was taken to a hospital and was listed in stable condition.
No arrests were made.
Witness Frank Williams told KCAL-TV that Dr. Dre was involved in the brawl.
``I saw Dr. Dre fighting somebody,'' Williams said. ``I don't know if he was fighting back. But there was a guy taken out basically bloodied.''
Andrea Ferguson, employed by a public relations firm that worked with Vibe for the awards ceremony, called the incident a ``disruption'' but declined to provide details. She added the show was allowed to continue but it was halted for about five minutes.
Dr. Dre, who was scheduled to receive a Vibe Legend Award for his lifetime contributions to hip-hop, had not come on stage yet when the fight erupted. Jones and Snoop Dogg stood on stage without saying anything.
``My understanding is that it was somewhat chaotic in there,'' police Lt. Frank Fabrega said in a press conference following the fight.
About 1,000 people attended the event; some scurried for the exits when the melee began.
``It's really important that we don't take a negative incident like this and do away with the awards,'' Suge Knight told reporters.
The show was taped Monday and was expected to be broadcast Tuesday. R&B singer Usher led the awards with five nominations, followed by Alicia Keys, who has four nominations.
Vibe magazine focuses on urban culture and entertainment. The awards are voted on by music journalists and ``regional tastemakers.''

Good lord! The VIBE drama is thick. There are so many rumors going around, we don’t know where to begin. We can’t say it all, because we don’t want people to get nabbed by 5-0. Lets just say, when Dr. Dre was sucker punched, he didn’t roll over and cry. We heard Dre straight started bombin’ at the dude! And after that, we heard a couple rap dudes (that crew from Queens) were warring for Dre and that dude that hit him left in a manner consistent with a mauling by a raging bull. Word is a young Compton rapper was really going at it for his mentor. Somebody tried to run out of the venue and was chased by a mob. Somebody ws removed bloody - that might have been the stabbed person or the person that attacked Dre...we don't know.
Now some reports said that Suge Knight said “F**k G-Unit,” but those reports disappeared so we don’t know if that is true or if the rumor has assumed a life of its own. Anyway, the night was crazy and it’s all on tape so best believe we’ll hear and see more of this

man stabbed.
*After last night, urban award
shows may be a thing of the past -
something to tell our grandkids about
one day in the distant future. It's
unfortunate that a crew of knuckleheads
in the audience of last night's Vibe
Awards in Santa Monica, CA have
unwittingly cast a pall over future
attempts to acknowledge our own. And
judging from the way show publicists
bent over backwards not to have us
report on the melee, or ask any of the
artists to comment on the situation,
you probably won't be seeing this on
tonight's telecast, which is scheduled
to run from 8 to 10 p.m. on UPN.
The footage of the fight was all
over the local 10 and 11 o'clock
newscasts within hours of the taping.
The reason for the fight, however,
became a thing of rumor, conjecture,
speculation, assumption and down right
hearsay.
Here's what we know for sure.
Snoop Dogg and "Vibe" magazine founder
Quincy Jones were on stage in the midst
of presenting a special Vibe Legend
Award to Dr. Dre when the fight broke
out. Cameras caught fools throwing
punches, kicking and hitting people
with white plastic chairs.
Q, who was already on crutches,
watched helplessly alongside a startled
Snoop from behind the podium.
"Y'all gonna mess up my rap, man,"
Quincy joked to the audience before the
skirmish turned into the Fistfight at
the OK Corral.
Meanwhile, in the press tent,
Kevin Lyttle was at the podium being
interviewed when the TV monitors -
showing the telecast while muted -
began beaming footage of the fight.
Reporters, sensing a bigger story than
anything poor Kevin Lyttle could ever
say, began furiously dialing cell phones
while watching the monitors in complete
shock. A few journalists even started
packing up, intending to get out of
dodge.
Cameras abruptly switched back to
Snoop and Q at the podium, just in time
to see both make a swift exit - Snoop
stage right, Q stage left. Suddenly, the
camera swings back toward the crowd,
capturing the very footage that ended
up on local newscasts within hours.
A 26-year-old man was stabbed
during the incident and taken to a
hospital. He was listed in stable
condition.
No one was arrested, but according
to a Vibe official, one person "was
removed from the venue."
UPN cut off the press room feed of
the auditorium, and that's when rumors
of the fight's origin first began to
sprout. Not even two minutes after the
monitors went dark, a brother came
running back fresh from the stage with
an eyewitness account, claiming that 50
Cent and Lloyd Banks were involved.
"I seen 50 Cent come from the
backstage where the performers are,"
said an excitable Kevin Washington, who
was at the event doing interviews for
Living it Up Productions on LA's Fox
affiliate, KTLA. Washington said he saw
50 flanked by bodyguards and breathing
hard.
"I didn't know if they had came
down from a performance or what, but
him and a bunch of bodyguards walked
over to a designated area where we
couldn't get through, because you have
to have the proper wristbands and
passes. Then something fell. It sounded
like a pot broke, and everybody just
started running around backstage. Then
all of a sudden, everybody ran to the
stage and a bunch of bodyguards were
fighting. I'm pretty sure I seen Lloyd
Banks on the monitor that was right
next to me backstage. I'm not sure if
it was 50, but I do know it was a
bunch of bodyguards on stage, and I
seen Lloyd Banks up there throwing
blows. Then I ran out because somebody
yelled mase, and a lot of security
started running. I didn't want to get
hit with no mase, so I ran off the
stage."
Meanwhile, witness Frank
Williams was telling KCAL-TV that
Dr. Dre was involved in the brawl.
"I saw Dr. Dre fighting
somebody," Williams said. "I don't
know if he was fighting back. But
there was a guy taken out basically
bloodied."
In the press room, a shift had
occurred in everyone's order of
business. Reporters were as
determined to get to the bottom of
this fight as the show's publicists
were in keeping it from us.

two publicists immediately barked,
"No questions about that! Just about
the show!"
"Well this IS about the show,"
Bailey snapped. One of the publicists
took the microphone from him and
headed toward someone else with
a more benign question about
Common's new album.
Then, veteran entertainment
journalist Ron Brewington shouted,
"Censorship! To take the mic away
from him is censorship! Don't do that!"
Common diffused the situation,
stating: "I can't talk about something
I don't know about, really. So that's
what it is, sir. We're gonna leave the
drama behind, ya dig?"
Soon, Suge Knight's name was
tossed into the rumor mill. Folks
were saying that "his people" had
sucker-punched Dr. Dre right before he
was to take the stage and accept his
award, prompting G-Unit to jump in and
get Dre's back.
To appease the journalists, UPN
sent back the president of "Vibe,"
Kenard Gibbs, to give a statement
about the disruption.
"There was a disturbance within
the venue," he said. "Nothing major,
but it very quickly erupted into
various people moving. We were able
to contain the individual who was
responsible for causing this disruption,
we had him removed from the venue. We
did go blank on the monitors until we
got things under control."
After a half-hour delay, the show
started up again, picking up with Snoop
and Quincy back at the podium - AS IF
NOTHING HAPPENED. Dre took the stage
and accepted his award, seeming very
disgruntled and agitated while reading
a prepared "thank you" speech.
By this point, Alicia Keys had
left the building, probably fearing for
her life, and TV reporters were
scrambling to interview anyone coming
into the press tent who claimed to have
witnessed anything.
In presenting Keys with the final
award of the night, presenter Rosario
Dawson was forced to say, "Unfortunately,
Alicia Keys had to leave early, so I'd
like to accept this award on her behalf."
The taping had been over for about
10 minutes when Suge Knight and his new
artist Petey Pablo just sauntered into
the press tent, unannounced. They had
driven to the venue themselves during a
break from recording. The press tent
suddenly became the setting for a new
Fox reality show, "When Reporters
Attack."
In the blink of an eye, news
cameras, boom mikes and reporters
with notepads had surrounded the two.
While Suge toked on a cigar, and the
publicists tried desperately to get
the mogul and the rapper away from
us, Pablo just started talking:
"Don't blame my homeboy, you
understand what I'm saying? We on
a new thing, we on non-violence this
year and forever more. All the media
might portray him as a monster, but
this is the coolest dude I ever met in
my life. Don't blame my homeboy."
Ultimately, the publicists
succeeded in their quest to kick us
all out of the tent. The interview
scrum, including Suge and Petey,
simply moved into the parking lot,
where reporters continued firing
questions in the cool night air.
Surrounded by a semi-circle of
Santa Monica policemen, and some in
a police helicopter overhead, Suge said
that he had absolutely nothing to do
with the fight.
"When I do something wrong,
blame me for it," he said. "One thing
about me, if I do something, I'm gonna
claim it no matter what it is. I'm not
the type of guy that's just gonna wanna
start stuff. I'm not an idiot. I'm in
the music business. I feel that Death
Row is the label that really made
gangsta rap popular to be able to move
forward for everyone. So I'm not here
to tear down, I'm here to support and
build it back up. And it's an honor
for me to even see guys that used to
be on my label getting an award or
performing, because that means I did
my job by teaching them how to do it."
Suge was calm, pleasant and
jovial with reporters, answering
every question asked, and even
stating how great it is that Dre is
being honored - by Quincy Jones,
no less. His parting words before
etting back to the recording studio
with Petey: "I'm on parole! Leave me
alone!"
Now while we were out covering
the fight, a Vibe Awards show
suddenly broke out. Here are

Watching the Vibe awards -- they did a pretty good tribute to Dre, he looked pissed though. He gave props to Kurupt? Wasn't sure what was up with that. Game and Dre gave a pretty good performance.

Yeah man... just watched the awards... Dre looks real heated on stage.
The honor was real dope... he gave props to a lot of heads including Kurupt. It was truly the shit to see Snoop hand him the award and give Dre a hug... and even before Dre came on stage, Snoop bowed down and told everyone he is his mentor and the best producer in hip hop.
LL's intro to The Game's performance was off the hook... LL let it be known that The Game was Dre's latest protoge.
There were a couple of audience shots right before commercial breaks that showed Nate Dogg and DJ Quik.
By the way, that pic of Dre, Quik, and The Game is fuckin' classic shit... best believe the west is back. Dre let it be known on stage that he's dropping Detox in '05. I'm sure we'll hear Snoop on that shit. I just hope this is the beginning of something real good like a Dre produced Snoop album.
Snoops performance had everyone up out their seats... The best performance of the night IMO (although Jadakiss and Common was a good close).
Stepping back and trying to analyze the whole brawl situation... I think Suge is somehow connected to this... why is some dude just gonna try to sucker punch Dre for no apparent reason? I'm sure someone *cough Suge cough* put his ass up to it. But homie was truly surprised when Dre didn't just take it and started mashing back... and I'm sure Dre at least started to fight back because Dre was sitting at the table with his wife... When they first cut from Quincy, the third guy you see Running, the kinda fat one, lol, is Dre. The guy had hit him, and him and whoever else that is took off after the guy. They run around a couple tables, then back towards the stage. The man that gets pulled down on the ground, that got hit in the head with the chair, and was smashed up against the stage, was Dre. They show a close up of him for a sec, he's standing behind a bodyguard smashed up against the stage, and smiles at some fucker, then the guy tries to hit him again, The guy that's hitting him starts pullin on him, and they pull them all apart, and Dre falls on the ground into the curtain, then gets up and leaves to the right, while everybody's fighting to the left. He wasn't in two-tone, he was wearing all black all night, like he always does. They showed him @ the very beginning of the show as he was sitting in the audience, and he was wearing the same black he was in this picture

If you look real close when they zoom in on the guy @ the stage, being held by that big ass bodyguard, just as they're about to zoom out, you see 50 Cent hit him in the head, right in front of the two cops, LOL. 50's wearing a black hat, and a grey & white jacket. You can also (I BELIEVE) see Young Buck stab the guy. When they first pan over to the stage area, at about 4 seconds, Young buck (who's dressed exactly like 50, grey and white jacket, black hat) punches the guy in the jaw... then steps back about 2 feet, and looks around, grabs something out of his right pocket, steps back forward, kicks the guy and hits him with his hand... when they zoom in on the guy, he's holding his arm, looking scared as shit. So I think that's Young Buck stepping back, pulling a knife out, and stabbing him. After that happens, watch, he just turns around and walks away to the right... I think that's when he stabbed him, then just took off. Shit, that's hardcore, man.
