Not surprisingly, everyone's listing rappers from the past few years like there wasn't a lot of wackness before then.
I remember the days when it was almost impossible to find anyone outside of the mainstream who respected Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. It's kinda ironic to me that they've developed such a huge cult following since.

LOL so true, and I can't believe nobody mentioned The Game. I'd also have to put Trina, Lil' Kim and ALOT of Bay rappers. Jim Jones is trash too.
And Bone Thugs always got respect. Bizzy & Krazyie were some of the top lyricsts of there genre.

You kidding me? Ten years ago, cats used to talk about Bone the same way y'all talk about Nelly or Yung Joc or anyone in G-Unit. They got some love in the West cause they were down with Eazy and cause most of their production was G-Funk, but just about everywhere else, they were considered the epitome of everything wrong with hip-hop, the commercial pop-thugs of the moment that everyone loved to hate. I remember when I used to post on Steve "Flash" Juon's site (one of the first online hip-hop message boards, BTW), cats would trip off on me cause I said I liked Bone when they were all bumpin Digable Planets and De La Soul and their old PE tapes. If you said you liked Bone back then, you usually had to justify it by saying, "Ah, they're a guilty pleasure", not that you respected them as artists who had their own unique style. Niggas would look at you like you was fuckin crazy if you said that.
So no, Bone almost never got respect back in the day. I never would've figured that a decade later, everybody would be talking about "E 1999 Eternal" in the same breath as "Doggystyle" or "Ready To Die" as one of the best hip-hop albums of the 90s. It just goes to show you how everyone's always looking for rappers to scapegoat for the state of hip-hop, when the truth is that that's been going on since forever.
And BTW, I would hardly call either Bizzy or Krayzie "top lyricists". They did show some growth on their solo albums (especially Krayzie's "Thug On Da Line" record), but Bone was always far more about style than substance. They did what they did really well, but don't get it twisted - none of them niggas can be called "lyricists" by any stretch of imagination.

You are right about bone not getting much respect outside of Cali and among their cult following but come on, Bizzie and Layzie did have lyrics.
My wack trio:
Hurricane G
2006 Kurupt
Gerardo (anyone remember that guy? That rico suave fool, he was terrible)

You must be catching what they are saying. Shit, even in one of the most biased magazines ( The Source ), had there 100th issue with 100 greatest albums of all time. This was in like 97' or 98' and both Creepin on a Come up & East 1999 are up there. Of course people who listen to Digable Planets & De La werent gonna feel Bone. The fuck are you thinkin? Thats like tryning to put someone who listens to The Game, Riock Ross, etc on to Murs or Keak da Sneak or something like that. Bone was plenty respected, you just had your head up your ass.

I dont get how East 1999 is a commercial album at all? The main, and pretty much only topics of that album were: smoking weed, killing people, selling drugs, killing cops & money over hardcore beats. What is commercial about that. Also remeber, the more well-know version of the Crossroads came out on a re-print of the album I guess about a year after it's inital release.

I had my head up my ass? Son, how old were you in '95? Was your little ass even listening to ANY hip-hop back then? Juronimo is the same age I am, and he backs me up on this. Respect your elders' wisdom.
You cite The Source as proof? The Source were often being accused of catering too much to the mainstream even back in '98, so it doesn't surprise me if "E 1999 Eternal" was praised by them. But heads were most definitely different - I remember plenty of fan polls on Flash's site where Bone were voted worst group. And it wasn't just the "underground" heads hating on them - often, it was also cats who bumped stuff like Bigge, Mobb Deep, Nas, and the Wu. In fact, I remember when "Life After Death" came out and people heard "Notorious Thugz", they were screaming bloody murda mo at Biggie for working with Bone.

Commercial hip-hop in mid-90s = G-Funk beats, lyrics that were overly violent and not socially conscious, weed-smoking, all that shit. If you were that kind of rapper in 1995, everyone outside of the West would have treated you the same way Southern rappers are treated today.
Oh, yeah, and Bone's style were considered gimmicky. Plus, you know how everyone complains about mixing hip-hop with R&B? Well, that applied back then, too.

While I was young in '95 ( only 11 ), I had listened to an heard plenty of hip-hop, more than you most likely, and only people listening to shit like ATCQ, Pete Rock and shit like that were complaing. People who like good music were listening to Bone Thugs. Seems like I was smarter than you when I was 11, then you are now.

But if I had to chose, that would be...
Jim Jones, Drag-On and Spider Loc
They are signed to The Dipset label and Lil Jon executive produce the album
Now that's WACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, I'm afraid you weren't...then or now.
Bone were not respected in '95, and if you really believe otherwise, you're the one who REALLY had his head up his ass.

^^^^ Not much better than "Laffy Taffy", and that's the worst rap song I've ever heard in my life.
-
I'd put in there...
Bonecrusher (Remeber him? Never scared!)
Caz
Tony Yayo (I remember G-Unit hyping him up like crazy when his ass was in jail. Then dude was set free and the truth was told.)
Shit, the whole D4L
Kevin Federline - He's THE prime example of somebody getting into the rap game just for the money. And today it seems any fool can put out a wack ass record with wack ass lyrics and make money with it, then play themselves like they're the genuine article.

This guy speaks the truth. In '95, I loved G Funk, $hort, E40 and that kind of music, as well as Tribe, De La, and that shit.
I've been in Cali my whole life and back then I was heavily involved in the underground rap scene, going to open mics, battling fools and shit like that. The truth is that many hip hop heads were narrow minded and if the music didn't sound like some DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Diamond D type shit, it wasn't "real hip hop" and it got dissed. Why do you think people use terms like "real hip hop" in the first place? Why do you think Masta Ace recorded "Slaughterhouse"? Why do you think Common Sense recorded "I used to love her"? They were mad that hip hop spread out of New York and brothas from LA, Oakland and the South were putting their own twist on it and to them it wasn't "real" and it got dissed.
Outkast wasn't respected at first. E40 wasn't respected at first. G-Funk wasn't respected at first and while it was great music, many people in the hip hp community dissed it since they were narrow minded. The same thing with Bone Thugs. This is what happened, I was there, and I served a lot fools on the mic that used to talk shit about west coast music. Why do you think Ice Cube got all pissed off and recorded Westside Slaughterhouse? In fact in those days, only Heiro and the Pharcyde got respect out of the west coast. I was there and I remember all of it.
-

So, youre speaking on what people from the East thought, not the country as a whole right? Youre telling me Cali was stiuck on that Primo, Pete Rock sound? I'm telling you, we were loving that Bone shit back then. Outkast too. I'll admit 40 Water was wierd to me at first, but as I got older, I understood the game he spit. I also remeber the Common/WSC beef, and the reasoning behind it, but that was just the Eastcoast getting mad. I've always had a wider taste in rap than most of the people on my coast, but facts are in 95, people were LOVING bone & outkast out here.

You see, the streets was lovin' the death row g-funk Ice Cube Snoop Dogg E40 Too $hort Bone Thugs type shit out here in Cali. I'm more or less referring to the self-proclaimed "real hip hop heads" and New York critics, the media, backpackers, underground heads, those kind of people. I also knew kids from New York and they were shitting on that type of music, it wasn't real or whatever. Bone Thugs and much of west coast rap was considered pop music and therefore it wasn't "real" in their eyes. I can speak on what the west coast was feelin', the local underground scene here, and the heads from New York that I ran into while I was in the scene.
Also, there's a huge difference between what the streets was feelin' and what the underground was feeling. The streets love Bone and G-Funk, especially out here in Cali. The underground, heads didn't, it had to sound like New York for it to be official in their eyes. The backpackers took over the underground out here around 93 or so and everything got twisted after that. That's a whole other topic right there.

^^^^^ Thank you, Juronimo, I'm always glad to see another brother who was actually old enough to remember the way things were back in those days. Phillyboy is here calling me stupid, but you and I obviously know better. And I already said Bone had love in Cali (if you were down with Eazy back then, of course West Coast cats would give you a chance).
I've been a fan of Bone since '94. But most of the "real hip-hop" heads back in those days didn't, and they were always giving me shit for liking them. So I think I'm justified in saying that it's really odd Bone is so respected these days cause they weren't back then.

this is quite a good discussion

You know what it is,if this guy actually sat down and listenend to a couple verses by Banks, he'd be astounded by what he's been missing. I'm not a big G-Unit fan, but Im embarrassed for these assholes that automatically go "G-Unot", & "Gay Unit" without listening to shit, they come off looking immature as hell.

^^^^ Naw, your just close minded, Banks is shitting on alot of these rap cats. I understand ur immature, but take Cams dick outta ya ass and give Banks a real listen.
  What a surprise Captain SlobNuts has his pussy all over my opinions again
and you have your pussy over his opinions

lol, yes you are right your opinions are worth just as much as mine. It's just Im not gonna bother responding when you waste your time trying to dog me or something, Im just here to talk about sports and music, at times I think you guys are here just to ride my posts. There was no problem w/ you whatsoever, but then I noticed a certain someone dogging EVERYTHING I Had to say so I became a lil curios.

The only people who's opinions I shrugged off were the guys that came in the thread talking shit from the jump.

You still callin people names? You said you were 22 years old. What happened to you?

^^^^e-40? :nawty:
mine would be, Rick Ross, Sean Paul, Chingy, Nelly, and Yung Joc. Man those 5 suck, Nelly used to be good but he's trash now.
Nelly has never been a dope MC!!! Maybe a dope rapper, but not MC....
Anyway, I'd go with Cats like Jim Jones, Yayo, Kurupt(used to be my favourite), etc
-
e40 again. and banks is a wack mc. he has no personality, weak punchlines and metaphores. dude sucks
