Kobe IV Is A Rare Low-Top Shoe
Eighteen months ago when Kobe Bryant met with Nike officials to discuss his next shoe, he gave Eric Avar, Nike's performance footwear creative director, one request: build the lowest basketball shoe ever.
"I pressed him on it," Avar said. "I was like, 'A real low? Like a soccer shoe?' And Kobe said, 'Yes. A true, genuine low top.'
"It was pretty remarkable. Here was the greatest basketball player in the world telling me that he didn't need all this stuff around his ankle. And he wanted to prove that to everyone from Nike to fellow NBA players to the consumer."
Bryant is expected to wear the new Kobe IV for the first time in a game on Dec. 19 against Miami.
The shoe is in part inspired by soccer shoes, as Bryant is avid soccer fan.

Kobe's shoes are always designed perfectly for playing ball...I doubt he'd fuck with anything that isn't top-notch. this is NIKE we're talkin about.

Players heavily tape their ankles so if he does sprain his ankles, it won't be because of a low top shoe. It'll be because he landed wrong. If your foot lands in an awkward position, a high-top or low-top will not save you.

Players heavily tape their ankles so if he does sprain his ankles, it won't be because of a low top shoe. It'll be because he landed wrong. If your foot lands in an awkward position, a high-top or low-top will not save you.

Most basketball shoes are actually worn on the street by people who think they look cool. So with this hybrid between street and basketball shoe, you got a hip Kobe signature shoe without a high top that hinders people from wearing them on the street during the summer or something. You got the ultimate seller. Of course, Nike won't just do such a basketball shoe without the backing of one of the elite players of our time. There comes Kobe in, telling everybody how cool it is. It sends a terrible message to kids who will now think that you don't need to high top, and that they can play faster with those low top shoes. They will go extra fast and emphatic, and roll their ankles badly. A lot of young bodies will be ruined over this.

Plus he's taping his ankles like a motherfucker. Kids don't do that. Either way, it's a marketing move and not some revolutionary concept of a performance shoe. I've got the And1 onslaught mid atm. LOL...you really think Nike falsely markets basketball shoes? you're getting what you pay for. Nike doesn't ship Kobe a special pair unavailable to the public. These are BASKETBALL PLAYERS playing BASKETBALL, this is not CIA business, man. We ain't vampires, lets try and be realistic here. Now, it could be that he had shit added to it, like a gel pad and what not, but the shoe is the same.

Well, you both are right and wrong. From what I've been told, players do get a different pair than the general public does. The cushioning is slightly different(personalized) and the material, in some cases, is different also. However, the visual product is essentially the same. In my opinion, this Kobe IV looks a lot better than the previous model.

It's not false advertisement. I'm sure they do certain modifications to perfectly conform to Kobe's foot. Looks and overall performance are the same but surely the arches / heels / toes are customized for Kobe.

I have not done it personally but I have seen a shoe cut in half. Like I said, it's not going to be a crazy difference between the P.E. and the general release but there is a difference (in terms of specs). However, that's not the case with every shoe.
