Title: 49ers/NFL fans..
Post by: Fuck Your Existence on August 18, 2008, 01:15:28 PM
is it safe to say if alex smith loses the strating job to O'Sullivan that he is offically a bust (ala Ryan leaf w/o the psychosis)?

ive had the feeling since day one that the pick was a complete loss but just wanted some more opinions.

Granny Smith > Alex Smith

But look on the bright side. You got yourself a solid 3rd string QB in Alex

fuck that,Michael Robinson played qb in HS and could no doubt give him a run for the 3rd spot.

Everybody down here used to talk about Alex Smith like "damn....remember Helix high. Him and Reggie Bush on the same team". Now that I think about it, maybe Alex was holding the team back lol

Imma life long Niners fan, but I gotta say that Smith=/= full time NFL QB.  I just don't know anyway else to say it.  Might be fine as a backup/timeshare, but full time he is not.  I know its tough to rate him given the sorry state of the niners line, and offense these past few years, but I think a lot of us that watch him week in and out don't see a gamer.

word,i'll admit he has not been in the best situation (as far as the o-line,diffrent o.coordinator every damn year, last years shoulder injury) but we have been lookin for just a flash or glimmer of what it takes to get the job done, bottom line he hasnt came through.

Smiths 2nd year he threw 2800 yds and 16 td's, and then we were 2-0 before he got hurt, and he never really recovered and shouldn't have come back at all, so lets not call him bust cuz in 06 he showed ALOT of promise, i think he just needs one more situation, where the Oline gives him some protection, cuz he has weapons and should have a good run game, the offensive line also is looking stong thus far..

that 2-0 was misleading...there was no real offense even with going 2-0. I remember the monday night game..was boring as fuck vs the cards...i think Alex Smith didn't even throw 130 yards that night and threw like 30 balls went 50%.. the second game same thing, only difference he threw a lot less.. but .dude didn't even throw a td or pass 130 yards AGIAN and still manage to win cuz of Gore's running game.

Dude for some reason lost something at the start of last season. The only reason i know this shit is cuz i made the mistake of drafting him as my back up QB...

true, but that was week 1, the next week he went 11 for 17. and threw no ints both weeks, the started to show life vs pitt throwing for 200 yds, then he went dwn..im just sayin give him one more chance...You also gotta remember in those first three games he had no protection at all...

I still do think we would be best off with Hill, hes a gamer

I'm glad to see Niner love on the board!  It has been a tough stretch, and for us old timers that remember the glory days its been even tougher!  I just really think that we have been spoiled by a lot of good qb's in the past 20 years, and quite unfairly the qb often gets blamed for the whole offense not running smoothly.  But in this case I feel its warranted, and that A.S. has no heart....just my opinion!

I mean maybe the no heart is a little harsh, but it just seems like he is not a top tier talent...I don't think he will ever take the niners deep into the playoffs.  i know that crummy qb's have won superbowls*cough* trent dilfer*cough* but I just dont see the skill set in A.S.  I know hes been banged up and all, but I have not even seen flashes of the great potential he was supposed to have.

"The leadership and qualities he has just makes you kind of want to latch onto it and follow a guy like that," Niners receiver Josh Morgan said of O'Sullivan. "J.T. knows the offense and he gets in there and takes command of the huddle. He goes out there and makes plays and gives us his all every time, and that's what you want in a quarterback."

well we know who morgan wants

49ers Name O'Sullivan Starting QB
23rd August, 2008 - 1:01 am
AP - Now as the 49ers are about to enter year four with Coach Mike Nolan and Alex Smith, the coach’s job is in jeopardy and the former quarterback of the future will begin the season as a backup, according to an Associated Press report.

Nolan announced Friday that journeyman J.T. O’Sullivan will open the season as the starter. O’Sullivan, with his eighth NFL organization in seven seasons, got just $645,000 in a little-noticed signing early in the free agency period. [READ]

Aside from the 1st preseason game, all of the QB's have looked capable, with O'Sullivan showing the confidence and comfort to know when to take chances. Smith's numbers didn't look great against the Bears, but if you factor in a spike or two, getting rid of the ball to avoid a sack twice, and a dropped pass, it wasn't bad at all. I remember all the excitement the 49ers built at the end of 2006, then the disaster of last year came. I'm not saying for sure that he would have been good, but Smith would have benefitted from a coordiantor that set the offense to his talents, spreading it out more and allowing him to rollout and run. In college, he made a lot of plays with his feet, but he has tried too hard to be a pocket passer in the NFL, and he has struggled.

I agree, but the one thing that REALLY bothers me about Alex is the fact then he leaves the Pocket quicker then say Hill or JT, its like Hes been rolling out his whole life, he doesnt know how to wait a little longer in the pocket to let the play devleop, almost like he looks at his first read, maybe the 2nd then he takes off outside the pocket which takes away half the field...
Title: Re: 49ers/NFL fans..
Post by: Tay on August 28, 2008, 01:39:04 PM
^^I agree with that..I guess it's not knowing when to rollout and when to stay in the pocket really. If they designed some plays to get him on the move a little bit, maybe he would have better success. Either way, the competition moving from Utah to the NFL looks way too quick for him, because his success in college was based on a lot of running and never being put on his back when he stayed in the pocket. O'Sullivan has showed a little bit about what happens when he stays in the pocket, and Hill did a great job at that last year. Let the athletes at the skill positions make the plays.

for sure we can def do some rollout plays to help Alex, but at the end of the day to be a great Qb you gotta pass from the Pocket or be athletic like Vick, which Alex aint, and in Martz's offense Plays take time to develop and Alex just doesnt yet seem fitted for that.

Im really exicted about JT and how Martz can help him develop, look wut he did with 3 guys who had stalled careers Bulger, Warner and Trent Green. JT is in the same type of postion..I see a bright future.

49ers place Smith on injured reserve with broken bone in shoulder
Associated Press

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The San Francisco 49ers put quarterback Alex Smith on injured reserve on Wednesday with a broken bone in his right shoulder, probably ending the former No. 1 draft pick's disappointing four-year career with the club.

Smith, the top pick in the 2005 NFL Draft, had surgery on his shoulder in December to repair three torn ligaments, the product of a separated shoulder from a game in late September 2007. He appeared to be at full strength in training camp, but experienced severe pain in his shoulder last Friday while making a long throw during practice.

Dr. James Andrews, who performed Smith's last surgery, confirmed the team's diagnosis of a broken bone in Smith's shoulder, though the quarterback and the team still don't know how it happened. Smith already was struggling with new offensive coordinator Mike Martz's system, losing his starting job to journeyman J.T. O'Sullivan during the preseason.

Smith likely will require more surgery, coach Mike Nolan said. The 49ers signed quarterback Jamie Martin, a veteran of Martz's system, to back up O'Sullivan and Shaun Hill.

The 49ers almost certainly will release Smith before next season, because general manager Scot McCloughan said last week the club can't risk paying $9 million in base salary to a backup quarterback in 2009.

Smith passed for 4,679 yards with 31 interceptions and 19 touchdowns in his first three seasons with the 49ers, who selected the former Utah star with the first draft pick of Nolan's regime. Smith has never found a consistent NFL groove while playing for four offensive coordinators in four seasons and throwing to one of the league's worst collections of receivers.

San Francisco's offense finished last in the NFL in 2005 and 2007. Smith received a share of the blame even though he played only part of his rookie season and missed most of 10 games last year. In 2006, his only full season as a starter, Smith posted respectable numbers for offensive coordinator Norv Turner while the 49ers went 7-9.

fuck that....i dont care if daunte doesnt know the system....jaime martin? get the fuck outta here

Only 1 TO was really his fault, the first FMBL wasnt his fault and the INT wasn't either, Mike Martz said the ball was where it was supposed to be but Battle ran the wrong route, go to 49ers.com you can see the article, this week will be the true test, on the road vs the NFC west champs, there defense is always very tough...

Good win yesterday. If they could be more consistent we should be alright.

we just gotta protect JT, he can make plays, a few of the sacks were him holding too long, but sometimes he just didnt get time and that could also have something to do with the 5 wr sets, but we also has a lot of BIG chunks of yards that u might not get with Max protect..Our d needs to bring the heat, thats on Manusky..

That was exciting to see the 49ers pull off a comeback in a tough road game. The defense gave up some points, but made a couple big plays when they needed them with Willis' interception return and Lewis getting to Hasselbeck for their only sack of the game. It was strange how they stayed in the Nickel defense all game keeping Lawson on the sidelines. Seattle's passing attack was missing a lot of receivers, and we could have used Lawson to come off the edge. Either way, a win is a win, and J.T. "The Truth" O'Sullivan played great, buying time, getting a few first downs with his feet, and having the confidence to get the receivers working. After they marched down and missed the field goal, they knew they could drive down the field again for the win! The NFC West crown is a very realistic possibility.
