NEW YORK — Almost 20 years after N.W.A pushed their first musical offerings independently, one of their founding fathers has decided to put major labels in the rearview and go back to his roots.
"What is a record company going to
"What is a record company going to do for me that I can't do for myself? Nothing." — Ice Cube
do for me that I can't do for myself? Nothing," Ice Cube said Wednesday night in a New York studio as he treated MTV to some selections off his upcoming LP, Laugh Now Cry Later. "It's nothing they can offer me to have a major percent of my record. It's really all about ownership at this time. This is not a new page in the game. This an old page. People are caught up in double, triple platinum. That's lovely, but what's double platinum if you not getting double-platinum money? It's all about what you take home to your family at the end of the day if you gonna make this game a profession."
Not only does Cube feel he's going to benefit financially from going back to being an independent artist, he also says it has granted him artistic freedom. The pioneering MC has recorded more than 30 tracks so far even though he doesn't plan on putting out the album until June 6.
"At some point an artist needs to put his money where his mouth is," he said. "Stop looking for the next advance. A record company's schedule sometimes don't coincide with what you need to do as an artist. By me not being on no schedules or deadlines, I made a better record because of that."
A few years ago, Cube told MTV News that he would be signing to Dr. Dre's Aftermath label and putting out music with the Doc (see "Dr. Dre To Produce Next Ice Cube Record"). That album never surfaced (see "Ice Cube Puts Off Recording With Dre To Focus On Harassing Kids").
"All that was happening before 50 blew up," Cube explained. "That whole situation, you gotta follow the money in this game. Dre's attention went in [the direction of] the artist that's right now. You can't do nothing but say that was a good business move. I probably would have done the same thing. But for me, I can't wait for nobody, I been in the game too long to wait. It was time to do the record and put it out. I did a whole lot of records without Dre on them. I would love to have him participate, but for the most part, I don't need to wait on nobody right about now."
Some high-profile producers have been making themselves available to Cube such as Lil Jon, Swizz Beatz and Scott Storch. Snoop Dogg appears on two records, Juvenile has one cameo and Cube is also in talks to have a guest spot from the Diplomats' Juelz Santana.
Laugh Now Cry Later finds Cube returning to his role as social commentator on "Guns and Drugs." And with "Child Support," he once again reiterates that he helped start the gangsta-rap thing and that there have been many imitators over the years. "Ain't no other kings in this rap thing/ They siblings, nothing but my children/ One shot, they disappearing."
"It's a metaphor," he said. "Only a few rappers dead or alive can do that record. I feel I put in enough time in the game. I was one of the architects of this style, gangsta rap. It was time to get it off my chest and say what I think."
Cube said the album title is "really the state of everything, it seems like, from all of America to urban America to hip-hop. Everybody is doing a lot of laughing and playing and having fun, but someday you gotta pay. That's really what the album is saying."
Cube says he will not be working on any more films until after his album is released.

props man ;)
cube has the right idea, shame bout JS & Juve on the album tho... :-\ still at least its new cube and he does sound fresh and hungry on Child Support....roll on summer!
-
Smart move. He can do it independantly and have it done the way he wants it.

'People are caught up in double, triple platinum. That's lovely, but what's double platinum if you not getting double-platinum money?'
i liked that comment.
Cube is an experienced head. He knows what hes doing.
i like the thought of a legendary MC going independent. looking forward to it
-
cube don't need Juels Satan and Juve..
-
Cube needs to put out a double album, sounds like he has enough songs and if its independent then he should have the whole say on what goes on his album (always wanted to see a double disc Cube Album)

actually, he does...war and peace project
-
Goddamn...about time a major artist did something like this. Stood up to those major-label devils and said, "Fuck ya'll!" This is what more rappers need to do, and now Cube's decided to set an example. My nigga...
I like what I'm hearing about the album, too, even if Lil Jon is producing some of it. Hey, you never know...maybe Lil Jon's energetic, up-tempo beats are exactly the sorta thing Cube needs to sound like AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted again. Kinda sucks that it won't be out until June, tho.
props man ;)

Yeah, I like Juve's shit...
-
lol oh yeah, still there was a long wait for the peace disc and by the time it came out it was like a new album...i want one like all eyes on me, life after death shyt :-\
-
good to hear that Cube is doing it how he wants to do it and that he is putting the movie biz on hold until he completes his album. It's hard to do that simultaneously and put out a good album. Not really feeling the Juelz collab but regardless I'm looking forward to the album.
-
Cube was always the smart one.
-
Good news. From the first two songs, sounds like this can be a great album.
-
besides those lame guest's mentioned...
good to see a new Cube.
-

hahah..it's all good. it was suppose to be one album like...but he wanted money..so..yeah.haha

Wow, i'm almost stunned. To hear Cube basically denounce the major labels is the sweetest piece of news i've heard in a while. Child Support is a great track, and i liked chrome & paint (it grew on me, and yes it's a neptunes beat). My anticipation for this album has def increased. I'm glad Cube is independant, because the album will come out the way he wants it, not the way some business man thinks is marketable.
As for him not being on the Math, of course i'd love a Cube album with Dre's beats - but truth be told it may have never seen the light of day. I'm glad Cube is calling his own shots and showing all these cats in the game that you don't have to sell your soul to a major label.
His comment about going platinum is so true. Who gives a fuck if you sold 3 million albums, especially if you're only seeing pennies on the dollar from it. Record sales don't mean shit. If you're independant, you can sell 100,000 and make as much or more as some of these artists on a major pushin platinum.
Props to Cube, and thanks for the article.
-
glad to see he's got his head on straight. if he can be successful as an independent it will change the entire dynamics of the game.
you can tell he's felt this way for a while from his comments and even records and skits on other albums
-
this is great news. im waitin for this album
-
is Ice Cube still cool with WC?
-
is Ice Cube still cool with WC?
he must be, they had a new song out that cube was talkin about
apparently he's cut contact with mack 10 though (good riddance)
-
cube is still cool with dub c i think....i got a version of chrome and paint with dub on it wit him
-
mac-10, cube, and wc together is tightest group ever. They need to reunite mang..

Yeah, like Tha Eastsidaz...their first album went Platinum and the second one went Gold, and all Tray Deee and Goldie Loc received were Dogghouse chains and $40,000 cash.
I'm willing to bet that most of the wealthiest thugs in the game right now are the independent cats selling a tenth what these mainstream rappers are selling. Especially in the bay...look how well E-40 and JT have done all by themselves, even though they've been on major labels at different times.
-
yea wc and cube are still cool....sux that mack 10 aint w/ them no more....cant wait for cube's album...
-

Meh.
Sounds like mismatches, though you never know.
At least he's finally coming out.
I was hoping for some W.C., Mack 10, MC Ren, Young Tre or Doc Dre. :-\
-
That all sounds cool and great. . .but at the end of the day all that matters to me is the music. . .and Cube hasn't made anything exceptionally good since about 96. War and Peace, with the exception of a few joints sucked.
It's all lip service until we hear the music, and both Child Support and Roll Call weren't exactly bangers. But hey, that's just my opinion.
-
good news....the king is back 8)
-
Makes me wanna cry, i don't wanna see no fuckin Juvenile's or Santana's on Cube's album, Cube should get some real rappers like Ren to feature on the album...
-
Thanks for this great news Cube!Really looking forward to the album, the guest apperances look nice.
-
Sounds like Cube is real focused... The guests sounds cool, I'm sure the Juvenile collabo will be dope, I don't know about the Juelz one, we'll see. I wanna see Bun B and WC on the album, maybe Nate/Butch for a hook, but not too many guests
-
Its exciting to hear the album is coming, but I really hope the album is not all Lil Jon, Swizz Beatz and Scott Storch tracks. Hopefully Dre will contribute and also Battlecat and other westcoast heads. I'll keep my fingers crossed, but Cube rarely disappoints.
-

the eastsidaz were screwed over by snoop tho, snoop pocketed their money and gave them the scraps, tvt = independent label too.

June 6th too far awy
Guests good except for Juelez
Independant, great move.
Too tired to type more !
-
Good for Cube. He's the one calling the shots, the way it should be. Looking forward to the new album.
-
I doubt a track with Juelz Santana and Ice Cube would even make the album. That track would sound pretty fucked up because they have way different styles of rapping.
-
One of the South's hottest emcees and one of the illest from NY on Cube's album... NICE! Finally, an old Rapper with sense.
-
Sounds good. The production looks promising apart from Lil Jon (I'll never like his sound). Too bad that Young Tre won't have a beat on there...he always cooks up some bangers.
-
Juve and Santana from Dipshit on the album?
sounds like a dope album but he needs to get this guest list right
-
I remember Cube saying around the time of 'Lethal Injection' if he never sells a million copies per album he would just stop.
I think his last solo went gold but im glad he still aint quittin.
Cube usually masters the sound of the time in his own manner for his lp's.
If you look at the list of producers he's worked from say QDIII to Madness4Real to Sir Jinx to DJ Pooh to Bomb Squad etc..he always seems to hook up with producers when they top of thier game or put out some of thier best joints for him to flow on.
Lil Jon, Swizz Beats, Neptunes are the producers mentioned so far but im sure Cube is more then aware of producers on top of thier game right now doing the rounds like Cool N Dre, Just Blaze, Scott Storch (mentioned!) and so on.
Dont know if he will part with his own cash for a Dre beat or two, thats the producer we all want to hear him work with but fuck it we all know Cube can drop classics when he gets in to his vibe.
June release? No films untill lp finished?
Taking his time and perfectin his lp, sounds dope.
He might not ever go platinum again even if he was on major label again but i think he's gonna prove a point when his next lp drops.
''Gi-Gi Gi-Gi Ga-Ga
They call me Da-Da
6 million ways to murder
choose one
Lose one soul
Bodies turn cold
Natural fright from niggaz goin bump in the night
Should I peely
Should I kill her in my iller
Then a Natural Born Killa''
-
Shiitt, this is BIG, maybe Dre would call him and say "Cube I miss you nigga ! come'on and bring some beer withcha"
Cube is the father of this gangsta shit, and he never thought he has a bunch of bastard kids KILL'EM KILL'EM and bring that real shit worldwide !!!
-
Yea, this will be dope! i just hope that he can get MAJOR exposure when he isnt on a major label..
-
cube better come strong on this!
-
That's real cool that he's going independent on this one, but with those guest & producers this'll be either a straight up hit or a miss.
No arguing the fact that Cube has been coming off dope on his recent tracks though. Considering that, things are looking good, but I just don't know with those collabos...
And Dre needs to holla at the man, never too many Cube/Dre tracks out there.
-
One of the South's hottest emcees and one of the illest from NY on Cube's album... NICE! Finally, an old Rapper with sense.
juelz is wack man.
-
big ups to the real GOAT Ice Cube
-
I hope Dre & Cube at least hook up for Detox. Cube's never been on a Dre album.
-
This isn't a solo album, too many guests for a solo album.
-
Who knowz whatz crackin wit WCs new LP?
-
GREAT MOVE BY CUBE AND HES DOING THE RIGHT THING BY GETTING JUVE, and santana ... cube has enough star power to make this independant thing work with him being in the game for so long commanding so much respect from his previous lp's/work.
now the only element is publicity and thats what you do you get juve , santana and other big time rappers/names to come out on your shit so the world can notice, P diddy did it , KRS one did it 2 =) (and people dissed krs one for doing this btw)
props 2 cube for a gutsy move.
-
Looking forward to some new Ice Cube--Hope Dre do some beats on that shit
