Title: Avengers
Post by: Shallow on May 07, 2012, 06:26:28 PM
I'm surprised there's not already a thread for it.

Saw it reluctantly yesterday. I haven't been too high on any of the recent Marvel films (except Punisher Warzone), but this film was the perfect comic book film. I didn't even think it was possible to translate The Avengers into a solid film. Joss Whedon went above beyond here. The action was perfect, the drama was perfect, the comedy was perfect; meaning as to how they fit in with the type of film it was. I haven't before seen a mainstream comic book translated this well onto film, and I doubt I will again.

I'm not saying it's the best film starring a comic book character. I'm saying it's the best comic book presented as a film. I just don't know how they do a sequel with Thanos and not have it be the same film all over again.

Either way, I see this being a real career saver for Joss Whedon. The box office records set by this film easily give him the stroke to do a Buffy/Angel/Spike film with a real budget (if he still wants to do it). Either way I expect some decent films coming out from Whedon in the next couple years.

DC is probably kicking themselves that they didn't let this guy do his Wonder Woman film, but Marvel is thanking them and laughing all the way to the bank.

I never really read the comic book much and wasn't that excited about it but I thought it was actually pretty good.

I'd still enjoy Joss getting to revisit those characters on the big screen.

I wouldn't say that the drama was perfect.  The build-up was pretty good, but after the scene where their airship was attacked (which was around halfway through the film), the story just ended there -- it was pretty much just action (which is cool) but there was really no drama or story development, except for Iron Man earning Captain America's respect when he nearly sacrificed himself, contrary to what Captain America said about him earlier in the film.

However, a lot of the success was due to Iron Man being in it, more so than Joss Whedon being behind the scenes.  People will watch Iron Man regardless, since his technology and special effects are cool to watch, while the Tony Stark character has a clever sense of humor that was also re-visited.

I just don't know how they do a sequel with Thanos and not have it be the same film all over again.
Yeah, I totally agree with that.  But I'm wondering exactly who composes the Council.  Is that something known?

I don't know about that.  It's not as if Wonder Woman would've been as awesome as The Avengers, especially sine it's not a popular enough title.  Wonder Woman would be tough, because you are basically going to have some actress with bomb ass and titties to get the comic crowd (mostly males) to watch it, but they will still need to attract a female crowd... yes, they will appreciate a movie where a woman is the main character, but not if she is "too sexy" which will devalue it in their eyes.

Also, Whedon was trying to direct the Batman movies, but DC/Warner Bros didn't select him... which obviously ended up being a good thing, considering the success of that trilogy so far, with the third installment likely to do just about as well as The Dark Knight.  His idea for the Batman trilogy was interesting but not nearly as good, plus Christopher Nolan's direction, at least with Batman Begins, revisited past DC/Warner Bros' ideas, as Batman Forever was originally intended to be about Batman's origins, but they changed that while implementing some of those scenes in the movie with Bruce Wayne having flashbacks to his youth, falling down and seeing the bat.

I don't mean the Avengers drama was great drama, I mean it was the perfect kind of drama for a film like that. I don't think a dramatic scene that was very powerful would have suited the film at all.

And of course Whedon isn't the reason for the succeed. Most movie goers don't even know who he is. But he's now attached to the film and that means he can make a lot of other films for the next little while.

And no Wonderwoman would not have been nearly as successful but Whedon showed he has the ability to write and direct a huge summer blockbuster and make it a great film. Which is wwhat he would have done with Wonderwoman, just a couple hundred million dollars less worth.

Can't speak on his Batman ideas as I don't know of them, and nor do I think I would have preferred his Batman to the current one.

With the hype that the movie had along with the buildup from all of the other Marvel movies associated with this, it would've been impossible for this movie to fail.  Suge Knight could've directed it and it would've still been big.

He stated within the past week or two that his idea was for the origin story to focus on Bruce Wayne fighting back (starting out with a scene of him as a 12 year-old who is about to get beat up outside of Wayne Manor, but by the time Alfred gets there, Bruce is unscathed while the other kids are on the ground) based on him realizing he had the ability to be able to overcome fear in a situation that most would run from, rather than doing so out of a drive from grieving over his parents.  Interesting, but again, it pales in comparison.

Again, I'm not saying Whedon had anything to do with the opening weekend numbers. I'm saying he made a rock solid film. Avengers was a better summer blockbuster action film than any other superhero film I can remember. Dark Knight and Batman Begins were better films, but a different type of film.

Avengers was everything it was supposed to be art wise, and that is because of Whedon.

And the best Batman film that would have been is the proposed 1985 Ridley Scott directed film  starring the yet to be a star Mel Gibson.

On that topic, I was always curious about how Batman Triumphant was going to be.  They had started working on it (and I think Kevin Smith had some involvement with it), and there were talks of Harley Quinn being in it (with Jenny McCarthy playing that role, as she was still a big deal at that time), but it got canned after Batman & Robin got poor reviews and underperformed at the box office.  It's hard to believe how badly they butchered that one, especially with a lot of that same crew having done Batman Forever, which was pretty good.  It's sad how they wasted a Bane portrayal, which to this day still turns off non-comic book fans when they hear about Bane (since they're not familiar with how bad ass of a villain he was).

Back to the topic at hand, I read that as of this morning (but not counting today's numbers), The Avengers is already at $299+ million as far as the U.S. box office receipts go.  I'm sure it will hit $350 million before the end of the weekend.  Pretty unbelievable, in a good way.  I'm not even sure if The Dark Knight Rises will beat it at this point, but we'll see.

I finally got to see it.  Liked it a lot.  Loved when Hulk slammed Loki the fag like a rag doll  :D ;D  Does anybody know who the purple creature was when the movie went off?

Saw this a couple weeks ago and was very impressed.  Wasn't sure how coherent a movie they could make with so many main characters having to share screen time, but Whedon pulled it off, perfectly.  Great mix of humor and action, as well.  The only thing I'm wondering now is, how do they transition back to their respective solo movies now that this movie is out and has turned out well?  Will this movie raise everyone's expectations unrealistically high for Iron Man 3 and the other sequels?

I think they go back to the same formula that worked so well this time around; make a bunch of mediocre to pretty good films leading up to a fantastic Avengers 2 film. The solo films won't make as much as the group films and that's how it should be.

I thought it was a great movie. Done extremely well for a comic book movie. The movie had everything a comic book fan could ask for.

And for the part 2 with thanos. Wowzers !!! I can't with to see the gauntlet in action with all the gems...

I just hope it inspires Hollywood to do a marvel vs DC or a just as good Marvel clone wars saga

So is this movie worth seeing?

And I'm not asking if it's going to be worth just the tickets, snacks etc... I also want to know if it's going to be worth the time of a long-time JLU fanatic.

So finally downloaded the movie. it was good. I mean, it's not a great movie, but all the Marvel movies have been entertaining.
