HOUSTON — A teacher who was recorded on cell phone video beating a student apologized Friday, saying she was "without excuse" for the attack on the 13-year-old.
Science teacher Sheri Lynn Davis, who was fired by the charter school this week over the attack, said she regrets what happened and would act much differently if given the opportunity.
"I apologize for the pain that the result of this situation has brought," she said in a brief appearance at her lawyer's office. "I apologize for this particular incident."
Davis took no questions about her attack on Isaiah Reagins at Jamie's House Charter School, a Houston-area alternative school.
Reagins suffered a black eye and other bruises in the attack. His mother, Alesha Johnson, filed a lawsuit Thursday against Davis and the school.
Davis' attorney, Chip Lewis, said he believed the lawsuit would bring to light problems at the school that led to the confrontation. He said she was forced to become "not only an educator but also a bouncer, an enforcement officer."
"There is a fundamental lack of security, of support and staffing for the teachers to provide a safe environment for these kids to learn in," he said. "And there's going to be a lot said about that."
Davis, 40, was fired Monday night after the recording of the April 29 beating became public. It shows Davis dragging the boy by his feet and flailing him, repeatedly slapping him as he is on the floor and tries to cover up.
Sue Davis, a spokeswoman for the school who is not related to the teacher, said she had not seen the lawsuit and could not comment on it.
"We do believe we handled the situation completely appropriately, in an appropriate time and we stand by our actions," she said.
Lewis said he was reluctant to provide details pending a sheriff's department investigation. But he said a fight in the hallway that was not related to Davis' duties started the sequence of events.
"She saw no one was addressing the fight, she went with another teacher to break it up," Lewis said. While she was in the hall, she heard her classroom door "not only shut, but lock."
"And that's when a sense of panic came over Miss Davis," Lewis said, adding that among the students behind the locked door was a female "special needs child."
He said Davis shook the door until she caught the attention of a student who opened it. Lewis said that is when the recorded incident begins.
"We don't have an excuse; we have an explanation as to what was going on — months, weeks, days," he said. "The cumulative effect of these teachers dealing with this is so untenable and contrary to a learning environment. It weighed on her.
"It doesn't excuse. There's no way Sheri would ever say it excuses her ultimate reaction."
Lewis said Davis had also met with Johnson, the child's mother, and apologized.
Johnson said Thursday she was upset the teacher had put her hands on her son.
"I don't even beat on my son, so what makes you think you can?" she said.
Johnson said she has taken her son out of the school.
"I'm sad because I didn't think she was going to hit me like that," the boy said Thursday.
Court records show Davis, who has sons aged 14 and 4, is facing an unrelated criminal charge in which she is accused of slashing the tires of another woman's car with a knife in January 2009.
Lewis described that as the result of a "personal relationship" and said Davis was unaware of the charge until he began investigating her background. She turned herself in on that charge, posted a $1,000 bond Tuesday and faces a court hearing next week.

If corporal punishment was allowed in schools, some of these slick talking dipshit wannabe bad ass kids that have no respect for even their own mommas would maybe shut the fuck up once in a while and graduate even. Hell, they might even make something of themselves someday.
These kids dont give 2 shits about being held after school or going to detention. When the deterrent is gone, motivation for decent behavior goes out the window, especially as many kids in schools today come from homes where their parents are burnt out losers who are barely literate enough to read their own name on their welfare checks.

Yup, and I mentor Jr. High kids and believe me it can be a pain in the ass. That's why I couldn't agree more with what Russell said above. Ive broken up fist fights, kids getting jumped and other violent shit that prevents other kids from learning. If they had to worry about me giving them a left jab, then maybe I wouldn't have fights breaking out in the classroom.

Like I said we were raised in the days when other adults were allowed to discipline your kids when the mother wasn't around and as an adult I see how it helped 'cause the kids weren't as bad and more respectful. They have different lines that they wont cross...and different reasons why they feel an ass whoopin is necessary. Not everybody has the same guidelines. You might think its ok to whoop your kid....with a certain amount of force....for hitting their sibling. Another adult might think its ok to whoop a kid with more force then you would...for talking in class. Those differences are why its important to not have strangers...especially in school...whoopin kids. Unless they are on the exact same page as you. Those rules arent in place just to protect the kids....theyre in place to protect the teachers from backlash from parents who feel a teacher went TOO far. Bottom line, if you teach your kids to be respectful at home....they will more then likely be respectful in public. if you need people to be whoopin your kid at school to keep em in line....or neighbors whoopin your kid to keep em in line....then youre doin somethin wrong as a parent at home.
And btw...we were raised in the 80's and early 90's....dont tell me kids were more respectful back then LOL Muhafuckas was on that gangbang shit at 8 yrs old.

We were raised in different places and around different ppl 'cause even the gang bangers respected my moms, went to church, respected their elders, etc. A nigga would be saggin and an old person would tell them to pull their pants then they would do so,they even had enough respect not to slang in front of older people or use profanity 'cause they had home training raither they were raised by their moms or g-moms. obviously if the kid didn't do anything then he didn't deserve it. However there are plenty of kids all ages, all across this country who have zero manners, no respects, and dead beat fucking parents. Someone has to put this kids in line and teach them to behave. Better a teacher slap a kid around and give him a dose of reality then to have the kid continue to be a shit head and get in some real trouble and get beat up by the police or some other stranger.
Someone who is a real parent wouldn't have to worry about a teacher beating up their kid, because a real parent properly raises their kids. Now of course there is the possibility of a sikotic teacher going crazy for no reason. The odds of that happening is far smaller then the odds of kids acting like assholes and constantly misbehaving and possibly even threatening a teacher.
