My cousin and I had a discussion earlier tonight about X and his multiple run-ins with the law as of late. Anyway, my cousin thinks X's first album is a Certified Classic. I thought the album was a near-classic with a couple of skips, but not a Certified Classic. However, it is also his best album, IMO.
What y'all think?

man hard to say if its not classic its bordeline. But i feel that with the music that has been coming out in the last 5 years its easy to go back now and look at some of those great great records and say they were classic.
The fact remains tho that when that record came out Dmx was on top of the rap game for a while. everyone was bumping Dmx. I wasent i was bumping my westcoasts shit lol.
-
^^Yeah, I was bumping this album pretty hard when it first came out, no doubt. Maybe at the time I would've called it a classic, but now that I've worn it out 10 years later, I'd say it's damn close to it, but not quite. Still a damn good album though, regardless.
-
It's definitely a classic. In '98 this was the album I listened to the most. I like every track on it, it has many classic songs and it impacted the industry tremendously. I see people claiming Get Rich Or Die Tryin' or The Marshall Mathers LP as classics well if those are then It's Dark And Hell Is Hot is certified. DMX was never considered a top tier lyricist but some of his verses on here were crazy ie. "Niggaz Done Started Somethin'" and the flow and charisma was unmatched at the time.
-
I'd say it's a classic. Damn, this thread made me wanna bump it, gotta dust it off the shelf and rip it, lol
-
Its was great debut album no doubt, flow on point and Swizz at his best
but classic maybe not, like Jd got my mind right said its bordeline
-
hard to call but i'd lean towards it being a classic. i think the problem with most of dmx's albums are that they are just too damn long.
-
can someone upload that classic. i looseit my cd.
-
the material is damn near classic but i think you have to consider it a classic just because of the enormous impact it had on hip hop. this was when Puff,Mase, the Lox and even Jay-Z were running around in their shiney suits talking about how they were balling and a whole bunch of other fuckboy shit. X just came out and made it possible for hardcore rappers to move major units once again. and without X there certainly wouldn´t have been no market for cats like 50 Cent and the Lox(after they left Bad Boy). X may not be the best rapper of all time but he sure as hell is the rapper that´s made the biggest impact on hip hop as a whole since Pac and Big.

It's been 10 years, and I've never heard anyone call it a classic. Therefore, a great album, but not a classic.
-
I'd say it is a classic. Some of the reasons were stated above.
-
DMX's first 2 albums are near classics. He definetly put out some of the best commercial hip hop during that time period.

-
It's definitely a classic.

P.S. Flesh Of My Flesh Blood Of My Blood still a really DOPE record
-
this album is a classic and it's dmx at his best.

Just finished bumping this album in its entirety for the 1st time since about 2000 or 2001. Still sounds as good as it did when I first bumped it 10 years ago. 8)

um i don't consider it even close to being classic. but by today's weak ass standards it's the fuckin' Abbey Road of fuckin' modern rap music.......not saying much though, lol.

Best album from DMX, the storytelling and beats are classics. It's a shame what happened to DMX, the last album i really liked from him was "The Great Depression".
-
I personally like "Year Of The Dog..Again" and "The Great Depression" better than this album. This albums got a few good tracks, but it sounds really dated. The only track I was really feeling from the album was "How's It Going Down".
-
not a classic,. but it is a great album tho.

Ruff Ryders Anthem was Swizz's only beat, everything else was Dame Grease. And OH YEAH this is classic
98 was a huge year for debuts from Pun,Nore,Canibus,Kurupt,Cappadonna, Blackstar...then you had Hard Knock Life, Aquemini, Full Clip... and IDAHIH was the best (lol @ the Canibus album), there hasnt been a year that good since
Man, it's really been 10 years???
-
I can say its definetly one of the strongest debuts and lands in top 5 of 98 along with like Moment Of Truth, Capital Punishment, 40 Dayz & 40 Nights, & Aquemini. 'Flesh Of my Flesh' was good too and it was released in the same year.
-
A classic? Maybe, he obviously isn't known for being a great lyricist but the beats bumped hard on some Swizz shit, and DMX rapped with so much ferocity that it didn't matter if the lyrics said anything relevant. He definitely brought grimey into the game at the time. Id say it is like 9.5 because of D's lyrics but thats only half a point off, damnn good album. With that being said id give Flesh of My Flesh Blood of my Blood a 9.8 that shit is definitely my favorite D album.
-
Not a classic but a great album.
-
that Convo track is one of the best tracks in rap ever.damn
-

you´ve gotta be sucking on the glassdick more then X....
-
close too but just misses out imo.
-
off tops its DMX's best album.. slaps all the way through.. especially intro.. come on man "iron" mike Tyson came out with that song!! when u heard that song u knew some one was about to get the knocked the fuck out!!! but anyways i would consider it a classic..
