well not really.. Brazilian Portuguese is very differerent then Spanish. Portuguese Portuguese is more similar to Spanish with similar pronunciation and some grammer.. Its like the difference between Italian and French, and there all romance langauges from Latin.

Yeah, but people from Brazil and Spain understand each other?

it depends...the common Brazilian probably understands some words spoken by a Spanish person but doesn't quite get the whole idea, Latin American Spanish is even harder to fully understand what they are saying since their Spanish is spoken different. I have lived around many hispanics so my Spanish is more proficient then an average Brazilian dude still hard.

Ha, people from Spain have told me Mexicans speak very odd.

yes their Spanish is all fucked up

u
well theres no correct version but Portuguese from Portugal was the first nation to speak it. I find it very formal and closer to Spanish then Brazilian Portuguese. Brazilian Portuguese  borrows lots of words from Africa and Amerindian languages and the pronunciation is very different. Then theirs Portuguese creoles in Africa, and different dialects in India and China.

i studied international business and german at university and i spent time in germany so like i can speak german but i wouldnt say im fluent, infact since i left its got alot worse and since i graduated i havent had any practise at all....its actually difficult to learn in terms of grammar

der die das ......nominative, akkusativ, dativ and genitiv...shiiiiit that shit was confusing, german grammar gets real complicated the further u get into it, but im guessin the further u get into any language it becomes more complicated. Gotta say i love germany as a country though still....some shit is a lil weird that i wasnt down with but thats everywhere right? plus the women are easy to get and are wayyyyyy better than i expected....infact german bitches are way more primitive than i expected...and they clean too, got sick ass bodies and no spots or obesity problems and shit...never been one into fat chicks.......oohhhh my bad im goin way off topic, lol

German, Dutch, Swiss, Norwegian, Swedish might have similar grammar, but no way in hell can I conversate with a Dutch person without knowing any words and stuff like that.

Now I as a Norwegian can understand a Swedish and a Danish (Denmark) person withouth needing to study the language.

There are three main groups of Indo-European languages, which are those based on Latin (Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese and others), the Eastern-Europe ones whose English name I don't know (Russian, Polish, Serbian etc.) and the Germanic ones (German (duh), Dutch, Scandinavian languages and also English)...languages within the same groups are based on similar patterns, grammar and vocabulary, but speakers can't just communicate with each other...I don't really get what Elevz wrote two posts above although Dutch is pretty similar to German which I speak perfectly.

And "Swiss" is just a German dialect by the way, but no language in its own right

Quote
Frisian is a West Germanic language (see characterisation of the Germanic language family) which is spoken by about 400,000 people in the province of Friesland in the Netherlands. It is closely related to Dutch but also shows a number of striking similarities to English, especially at the lexical level.

Dutch is, however, the most important language for the development of Frisian. In the course of history the two languages kept coming into contact with each other. This linguistic contact was determined by the power relationship in the Low Countries and has been a great influence in the development of the present language situation in Friesland.
http://www.ned.univie.ac.at/publicaties/taalgeschiedenis/en/fries.htm

Quote
The Frisian languages are a closely related group of Germanic languages, spoken by about half a million members of Frisian ethnic groups, who live on the southern fringes of the North Sea in the Netherlands and Germany. Frisian languages are the most closely related living European languages to Old English, but modern English and Frisian are mostly unintelligible to each other. It has been asserted that fishermen from Great Yarmouth could understand fishermen from Harlingen in Friesland. There are similarities to both Dutch, as many Frisian words are borrowed from Dutch, and Danish, as Danish speakers are able to understand some spoken Frisian. Additional shared linguistic characteristics between the Great Yarmouth area, Friesland, and Denmark are likely to have resulted from the close trading relationship these areas maintained during the centuries-long Hanseatic League of the Late Middle Ages.
