Title: Shaq calls Phil Jackson "Benedict Arnold"
Post by: GangstaBoogy on December 26, 2006, 08:18:56 PM
It wouldn't be Christmas without a Shaq-Kobe feud, and now it seems Phil Jackson wants in on the tradition.

Jackson, who once upon a time seemed to favor his star center over his star shooting guard, on Sunday called out O'Neal, saying he was "the only person I've ever had that hasn't been a worker."

Shaq, who is rarely at a loss for words, was asked about Jackson's comments on Monday following Miami's 101-85 win over O'Neal's former team.

"How can Benedict Arnold be reliable in what he says?" the Big Aristotle was quoted as saying in Tuesday's edition of The Los Angeles Times. O'Neal declined to elaborate on his statement and, since he was in street clothes for the game, was not required to give a formal post-game interview.

O'Neal and Bryant had been feuding since O'Neal's trade to Miami following the 2003-04 season. But last year the two superstars stated publicly that they had reconciled their differences.

Then came Jackson's comments on Sunday.

"He's the one guy that didn't really like to work," said the coach who boasts nine NBA championship rings. "I know Pat [Riley] got him working here in Miami. We had a hard time getting him to work. All the other players -- Michael [Jordan], Scottie [Pippen], Dennis Rodman, all those guys that we had, Horace Grant, they're all hard-working practice and personal work players."

Of course, O'Neal was not the only player Jackson prodded. Speaking about Dwyane Wade, Shaq's new partner in crime and last year's NBA Finals MVP, Jackson said, "He travels on that spin move. He picks up that pivot foot … everybody knows it. Dwyane Wade can cover so much ground when he makes that move. As you know, he can go 20 feet with that spin move and get to the basket."

While Jackson's comments are sure to refuel a media frenzy that was threatening to die down, it did little to help his team, which has lost three of five.

Watch everyone come in here and call Shaq childish or whatever, yet ignore the fact that he was merely retaliating at what was said about him by Phil.

Isn't it fascinating how Stan Van Gundy has been censored by Pat Riley? After Riles teamed with Shaq to get Stan fired last season, the organization attempted to put the "Stan wants to spend more time with his family" on the situation....

Of course, Van Gundy had only been in the league 15 years, so there was no way for him to know there would be travel and long stretches away from his family. When he was named head coach of the Heat, it must have been shocking for him to realize all the games weren't played at home....
The most nauseating memory of the press conference announcing Van Gundy's "resignation" was Riles choking back tears as he spoke about his "close friend" stepping down....

That's like the guy releasing the Guillitoine fighting back tears as his "close friend's" head rolled across the floor....

Greg Stoda of the Palm Beach Post has a great column explaining all of this, and it is a must read for anyone who believes Riles and Shaq had nothing to do with Van Gundy leaving and it was simply a matter of Stan missing his family....

These two backstabbers worked together behind the scenes to remove Van Gundy and it's a damn shame the two of them were rewarded with an NBA Championship....

A few days ago, Van Gundy told Stoda he'd be willing to do an interview "if the team agreed to it."....

Say what? Who in the hell is Pat Riley to tell Stan Van Gundy whom he can and cannot interview with? Stan is a grown man and should be free to speak freely about how Riley backstabbed him....

So what if he loses his job as a "consultant?" Van Gundy is respected around the NBA and would find another job the same day. And he could also finally hold his head up with pride again...

What is this, Nazi Germany or the Soviet Union? Benedict Riley is the sole arbiter of whether Stan Van Gundy is allowed to speak?....

Maybe his new name should be Adolf Riley....

Three years ago, Van Gundy did a magnificent job cleaning up Riley's mess and turned a disastrous start into a 42-40 finish, a first round playoff win and nearly a trip to the NBA Finals. And this was with Dwyane Wade, Lamar Odom and Caron Butler, not the Big Ingrate....

The reason for Van Gundy's success? Completely junking Riley's non-sensicle grind-it-out offense and allowing Wade and Co. to get up and down the floor....

Riles quit on his team early right before the season and put his "close friend" in a real bind, but Stan turned a potential disaster into a tremendous coaching job....

The next season, the Heat made the Shaq deal and won 53 games, only to lose to the Pistons in seven games in the Eastern Finals....

Even though he disappeared in the second half of Game Seven, grabbing only two rebounds and playing no defense, the Big Moses ripped into his coach after the game, saying the team lost "because I didn't get the ball enough."....

Instead of defending his "good friend" and telling the Big Excuse" to shut his trap, Riley told the press he was "going to get more involved on the coaching end next season."....

I went on the air ane next afternoon and announced Van Gundy was finished and would be fired "over the summer or early next season."....

Riley wanted to s***-can Van Gundy right away, but the backlash from the media was so strong that he had to back down. He was lambasted for not supporting his coach and was portrayed as a backstabbing weasel out to take Stan's job away....

All of this was true, of course....

Last season, with Shaq injured and the Heat off to a slow start, Benedict Riley saw the opportunity he'd been planning for and fired Van Gundy....

Benedict was green with envy that Van Gundy had won big with a group of players he couldn't win with and wanted to be the coach who won a championship with the Heat....

So it off with Stan's head and Benedict stoel the coaching seat....

Can you read? Phil is 10x the person Shaq will ever be, he was merely speaking truth... Shaq, being the child he is, retaliated with a personal diss and name-calling. What's new though? He's always been known as an overgrown, immature baby...PeACe

Well, Phil was simply asked about Shaq's work-ethic and all he did was say what everyone already knew. Everything I've been saying on this board for the past 3 years, the 100% truth...Shaq just got butt-hurt that Phil didn't lie for him to make him look good and retalitated with a childish diss against the man who made his career. Not enough he had to say "Pat Riley was the greatest coach I ever had" last season, but now he takes direct shots too. Very immature person. still obviously mad/jealous that Phil is back with Kobe...PeACe

Well I do not know too many people that would take Phil's comments as a compliment. There is truth to what he was saying, but it is the way he said it. Shaq could have took the high road like Arenas did with Kobe and maybe yell Subway or something when he is shooting like Gilbert now yells quality shots.  ;D But yeah Shaq was and still is overweight, but everyone takes comments differently. Phil seems to have no problem finding the nearest camera or bookstand to air out former players of his lately.

Now that I think about it Shaq and Kobe do the same thing. Jim Gray is like Kobe's personal Ahmad Rashad for dropping exclusives and Shaq did the whole Godfather analogy on tv also so all of them need to L.I.G. it and grow up.

Must not have been too bad of a flaw, still helped Phil win 3 titles. My point is why bring it up. I am sure there are things about MJ and Scottie that Phil did not like, but you don't hear shit about it. Just like you said, you take the high road. But they are all guilty of it.

Dude, Shaq was ALWAYS known for being terrible with conditioning, showing up to camp fat and out of shape, eating Big Macs before games, taking extensive time off mid-season for petty injuries to heal, etc.... we coulda' won 10 championships in a row if Shaq had HALF the work-ethic Kobe has...Phil has every right to speak truth when he is asked questions about it...PeACe

Like I said, L.I.G. it. Shaq does not play for Phil anymore and he is not Kobe's teammate. The shit is old. It's old when Shaq was saying comments about Kobe. Kobe after a while just took the high road and did not comment on it. Shaq and Phil could have done the same thing. Shaq could have just said no comment. This shit is like a soap opera. The honeymoon for them has been over.

Yea, Shaq shoulda' just sucked it up and said "he's right, I was terrible at conditioning and keeping myself in shape for the season when I played for him" like a man, instead of name-calling and dissing like a child...Some people just really need to grow up and look at shit from a more logical perspective...PeACe

I do agree. It's Shaq who's acting like a kid. Phil didn't diss him with those name-calling childish jokes: he was asked who gave him more problems in his career and he said Shaq. And i think it's real sinceTex Winter said it too, before him. Plus everybody knows Shaq wasn't in shape. What's the big deal? Truth hurts?

Everyone and their momma knows Shaq's work-ethic has always been terrible, and he won't deny it himself...Dude would take the whole summer off, then show up to camp fat and out of shape, eat whatever the fuck he wants during the season, never trained, kicked back during practices, takes time off for injuries that are made up and/or exaggerated (because he got "injured on company time" and he's gunna "heal on company time"). This shit is KNOWN, Phil was just reminding everyone why Shaq was incapable of playing on Christmas...

And LOL@Shaq being the greatest big ever. I guess you can argue that, but today on the radio all the analysts were agreeing on how Shaq coulda' been the greatest EVER. I dunno if I'd go that far, but he definitely coulda' had an unfuckwitable resume...PeACe

Y'all are missing the fucking point. Shaq gets 20+ millions per year from his team not to act in the movies or to make rap albums, but to be the best athlete possible. It means he should act professional, live a life like a sportman does, get a diet, go to training, be in shape, work in the gym, he shouldn't drink, shouldn't smoke, etc.. I dunno what you guys are talking about defending him. That's how he should have acted in his Lakers days: like a true professional man. The fact that he's a good bball player (see: his fat ass can't be stopped) doesn't mean shit. He's paid to live like an athlete, to improve and to give 100% of himself every fucking game! He didn't. Point. Yeah he won titles, but that can't be an excuse. And that can't stop Phil from saying Shaq wasn't professional.

I was never a big Shaq fan even when he was with the Lakers.  Go back in history on a few Lakers boards and you can see for yourself.  His free throw shooting and lazy pick and roll defense was a major liability to the team.  Not to mention his shitty conditioning and poor work ethic. Only reason he is even considered as GOAT at Center is because of the era he played in.  Hakeem completely humiliated him in the Finals when he was with the Magic, after that there were really no young big men that could D him up.  Yao is reaching his peak and Shaq is and has been on the decline, so its unfair to judge that matchup.  But for what its worth, in their head-to-head this year, Yao embarrassed his ass.  I was all for a Shaq for Garnett trade several years back.  If that would have happened the whole state of the league would be completely different right now. Shaq just butters the media up and is a likeable guy that acts goofy and shit, so the media and unknowing fans eat his shit up by the shovel-full.  Once you get past his bullshit, you see what a hypocrite and moron the guy really is.

No, but that's another reason that you could never be considered a good Laker fan. You don't like your franchise player, yet you're in love with the self-proclaimed franchise nemesis. Admit one thing, Jake, you like Shaq as a player more than you like the Lakers, you always have...Saying you don't like Kobe and being a Laker fan is like saying you don't like Magic in the 80's and being a Laker fan or saying you don't like Jordan in the 90's and being a Bulls fan...It just doesn't work.

I just wanna be sure about it. I mean are you talking about the person (if so it's not "that" dramatic) or the player? Cause i've never said something like that before, but if somebody doesn't like (which is different than "hate") Kobe Bryant as a player i believe he's just a troll spamming on the forum to get some attention. It's impossible: it's like saying you don't like Federer, or Tiger Woods, or Valentino Rossi, or Schumacher, or Ronaldinho, ecc.. Kobe is arguably the best player in the NBA at the moment. In the top5 for damn sure even if you are a Laker hater. But to say you don't like him............. no.... it's impossible.

so you mean to tell me that philly fans should like andre miller and hate iverson?
so you mean to tell me that raptor fans must like bosh and hate vince carter
so you mean to tell me bulls must like ben wallace and hate ron artest
so you mean to tell me cowboys fans should have hated emmitt smith and loved eddie george
so you mean to tell me 49er fans should have hated joe montanna and loved steve young
so you mean to tell me 49er fans should have loved tim rattay and hated jeff garcia?

the answer to all these are no!
there is no standard for what a fan must like and must hate.

i'm not an expert on bulls basketball but it is possible that there could be bulls fan who disliked jordan

the lakers have been around since before kobe and will be around after. until kobe wins a playoff series or a championship under his leadership, he's just another player on my team between shaq's championship teams and whoever comes along later down the line and wins a championship for us.

Actually........

Phil quitted because Buss wasn't giving him 10mils per year.
Horry went to S.A. because his daughter has huge phisycal problems and he wanted to stay close to home.
