Something I put together showing the evolution of Snoop's "Doggfather" album. All info is from internal Death Row label reference mixes which show the album from early conception and production (see: adding "strings", transferring to "multitrack", etc), to track selection and album finalization. Check the revolving door on the tracklists... it's pretty wild. "Head Doctor" and "C Walkin'" were there consistently and in the running up until the very last track selection; just barely making the retail. While other tracks like "Off the Hook", "Never Leave Me alone", "Into to the Indo", "Just Watchin" and "Street Life" were all considered at one point (and/or possibly recorded originally for this LP). Also interesting is that almost all of DMW and Snoop Doggy Dogg at his best, were, at one point in time, the core of this album. Really makes you wonder.
PROPS to the person who hooked me up with the info, all credit to him.
At the least this will dead some of those Doggfather "original version" conversations lol. Anyways, check it out!

Interesting how Snoop's Upside Ya Head ("Niggas in the game be doing way too much/ Acting tough with this East-West Coast stuff") didn't end up on any of the proposed tracklists until after Pac died. Good read.
-
they took "Street Life" off very early...always thought it might have been a last minute decision not to have any Pac collabos on Doggfather

Yeah... it went from having no Pac to three songs with Pac (Street Life, Out the Moon, Just Watchin) to no Pac again in three consecutive tracklist proposals. But I wonder which proposed use of the song came first, this particular tracklist or the Gridlock'd soundtrack. Again it makes me wonder more about the song, since there was talk before of it being strictly a LBC Crew/DPG song (which is likely the truth) intended for Haven't You Heard but with Pac added at Suge's suggestion to stir up more pre-release buzz (which is now what is questionable if this same version had a possibility of being on Tha Doggfather).
-
Whoops, forgot to add this one too. Also interesting they were considering this as a maxi single for the album at one point...

if that album had included Eastside Party, Too High, Street Life and May I instead of other lackluster songs (imo) which made it to the final tracklist, it would have been way doper. funny how most of the songs weren't in the early tracklists.
-
as much as i enjoyed tracks liek downtown assasin etc they didnt mesh well with the sound of the album.
if it had a pac collabo or two on it and may i funk w you and change gon come i think it would have made that album classic status
-
pretty interesting, i knew most of the DAT lists before but some where even new to me.
thanks for sharing!
i think the album would`ve been way better with another final tracklist (May I, Dogg Collar, Street Life, Just Watchin, Head Doctor, Change Gon Come all classic songs left off)
-

Cosign. They definitely left some heaters off of there that would have made the album way better. Looks like Head Doctor would have been on there if they could have cleared the sample.
Thanks Efrain!

This info Efrain has provided us has made me think of a couple interesting points of discussion.
The "strings added" information is what particularly caught my eye. Most of the early Doggfather songs ended up on Smokefest and Dead Man Walkin. The versions on "Dead Man Walkin" all sounded complete with proper mixing and added instruments, especially STRINGS, when compared to Smokefest.
I always thought that Death Row had Big Hutch or one of the other in-house producers at the time go in and add those elements to the DMW album. After seeing the evolution of Doggfather I no longer believe that. The Smokefest bootleg must have consisted of mixdowns of those tracks that came prior to any of these Doggfather DATs, hence the lack of strings in most of those songs. So when Smokefest was released there were more complete versions of all of those songs in existence, but when Snoop released it he only had copies of the older mixes to use for it. Gold Rush was labeled "Lite Mix" on Smokefest which makes sense because it was really just a pre-mix version like the rest of the songs on there. It was the only song that had been previously released though so that's why it got "Lite Mix" attached to it.
DMW tracks must have just been taken straight off of one of the Doggfather Master DATs and not even really touched. Same goes for the Doggfather leftovers that appeared on "At His Best."
-
interesting.

why would they put up fake credits mentioning additional work by Big Hutch on several songs ? makes no sense except if they wanted to hype Big Hutch's work up and give publishing rights to an artist affiliated to their roster at the time.
-

Great point. I was always under that impression too.
It also made me think of that alt. mix of Street Life that leaked with different arrangements and some string work going on. Seeing as how it isn't on the below list of stuff that was sent out, and that it sounds kinda amateurish, it gives us a little more insight into the creative process. "Street Life" was clearly considered for string work; to the point that someone layed them down to see how it would sound (probably on a keyboard), but eventually the idea must have been abandoned for one reason or another.

That's very likely, and interestingly, if it is the case, then it still sounded 10x better than the WIDEawake Lost Sessions Vol. 1 stuff.

Yup! IMO the Street Life version with strings trumps the other version, but neither of them sounded fully completed.

I just looked at the DMW credits and Hutch is only credited on 3 songs. He probably did contribute production in some way on those songs, but was not responsible for the other differences between Smokefest and DMW songs.

Certain songs were remixed and touched by Big Hutch and a few other Death Row in-house producers like "Head Doctor". Certain songs were not and if you have Smokefest album that Snoop put out and Dead Man Walking, you can hear the difference.

Yep, but the point I think he's trying to make is that some of the songs that we presumed were "touched up" specifically for DMW were, in fact, already finished as of '96 (see String Date 3/21/96). For example "I will Survive" on DMW has added string work, different from the version Snoop released on Smokefest. Since DMW was released in 2000 and we know Hutch did work on the album, everyone assumed the "new" string work was Hutch, but in fact it wasn't. It was already done back in 96. The version Snoop released on Smokefest was probably a working demo he had, and not the finished one with strings in the DR vault.
-
I just skimmed this thread and I can't believe you retards are actually putting up alternate tracklistings, and debating on what happened, who gives a fuck the album came out in 96, and wasn't even that great. Fucking Euros and their 90s obsession. (http://i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/000/001/582/picard-facepalm.jpg?1240934151)

if there was some pac-collabo(s) and some dope tracks that were left out it would sell more and this album couldve been a classic.
why did the not release it with street life on it?i think it was a bad move to leave a song with pac out,
any1 know the reason?

I don't know why Pac didn't appear on Doggfather but I think you're giving Street Life more credit than it deserves. It had potential to be a good song with added/different production, but was kinda mediocre overall.

My guess is sampling clearences. The same with C-Walkin'. That's exactly the type of song I would expect from a '96 Snoop Doggy Dogg album; Gangsta rap. The piece of shit album they ended up releasing was the beginning of the end of Snoop.
By the way, on the whole album, Snoop says 'Death Row 4 Life', 'Telling me about the money Suge Knight stole', and lyrics to that effect. It's funny that no one pulls Snoop up about that considering the bullshit he coincedentally came out about Suge when he went to prison.
-
"i will survive" and "change gonna come" are both great tracks that would've fit well on the album but guess it dont matter now as we have the songs. Not sure what songs i would've removed in their place though?
-

There were rumors that Snoop wanted to show that he was still a commercially successful artist without having to rely on Pac at that point, especially after Pac died. Again, that might be why the Pac songs were taken off on the track lists proposed after his death.

all those versions are way better then that wierd ass version art put together a while back
-
What's the 'at his best promo'?
Before Death Row dropped Dead Man Walkin' they prepared an album called 'Snoop Doggy Dogg (DMW) at his best' which they pressed up as promos which were circulating in small circles, I think a few even sold on collector sites:
http://www.musicstack.com/priceguide/snoop+doggy+dogg/dmw+at+his+best
It consisted of the same tracklist as the 'Death Row Snoop Doggy Dogg Greatest Hits' but for whatever reason Death Row scrapped it, switched up the artwork and released Dead Man Walkin'. A year or two later they released 'Death Row Snoop Doggy Dogg's Greatest Hits' which was essentially the same album as "at his best", just with a different title and different artwork.

I remember that, it was scrapped at the last minute. I think it went so far to the point where it was even advertised as being released, since I remember seeing it in my weekly Best Buy ad at the time, as I went to Best Buy the following Tuesday but was told that the album never shipped. I remember wanting it just for Midnight Love.

On the topic of Dead Man Walkin, there are 2 things that I find interesting.
First, I wonder if 'Hit Rocks' was recorded before or around the time of Dogg Food because at the end of 'Dogg Pound Gangstaz' you can hear the beat for 'Hit Rocks' come in.
Also, on 'I Will Survive', Snoop says something like 'Wake up in the morning to my lucky charm cereal', and during one of the choruses on 'Serial Killa' from Doggystyle you can hear this particular line scratched in, which makes me think that Snoop's verse may have been recorded in a draft form in 93?

"Hit Rocks" was recorded in 1995 by Snoop Doggy Dogg & DJ Pooh while they worked on the recording sessions of LBC Crew compilation and Tha Dogg Pound album. The song previously appear on the original tracklist of "Haven't You Heard ? We Givin Something Back To The Streets" as a bonus track.

It would be nice to hear that "walk that walk" track that's listed in the first 4 or so tracklists too. Pretty much every song they did with those strings sounds amazing.

I've never heard the Battlecat Remix of Vapors, but I always thought the version Snoop performed on SNL may have been a live rendition of it. I'm talking about this version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RoNCUi3d10
-
Pretty much every song they did with those strings sounds amazing.
Agreed. They made a world of difference in the differences between the Smokefest and DMW tracks. Smokefest sounded super boring to me so when I saw that most of the same tracks were gonna be on DMW I was pissed at first, but ended up liking it once I heard the album. Those movie clip intros were annoying as fuck to me though lol. I wonder if those were added to the tracks back in 96 or in 2001 (or whenever it was that DMW was released).
-
I think the movie clips were added by Hutch. That's more his style.
-
^^ Nice looking tracklist Sues!
05. Vapors (Remix) :-X
8)
Where can I hear this remix, I remember hearing this on e on the radio backin like 97 when midnite love got released.
I think it's the only song off of his Doggumentary EP that remains unleaked.
Didn't Battlecat produce the remix?
Yes, Battlecat produced tha remix. It features Charlie Wilson and the late Teena Marie on it. That's where the confusion came about regarding the credits that appeared in the booklet of tha album.
I never realized that they were listed as features on Vapors. Props for pointing that out. Now I REALLY wanna hear this track!
Haha yeah seriously... someone please bless us with.
I hear that, that has to officially see the light of day. It's a nice remix. I've personally heard it (a loooooooong time ago) and I remember that it was gonna go on "Tha Doggumentary" EP that was planned to be released in 1997.

walk that walk is c walk
suge wasnt havin it

Walk that Walk.... Could That be Gangsta Walk on DMW?
I think between The Chronic relit, lost sessions, smokefest, dmw, At his Best, LBC crew album we have most of these songs?
-
Even though this is an old ass album from back in the days, Im gonna put together a doggfather sessions comp with the provided lists. Im gonna do a sessions comp, and like a second disc with the best of these songs for a doggfather disc 2 of the best leftovers.
Any info on these songs?
Walk the Walk (c-walk? gangsta walk from DMW?)
Come on home (So Sentrelle?)
Gangstas Life
intro- havent u heard (LBC CRew?)
off the hook
quite oblivious
get up to get down
Whats my name daz remix (From Dr Greatest hits?)
bugsy
stone cold corleone

would you kill 4 me
Also where does the song Hoez fall into this?
As I stated some of the other songs popped up on lost sessions, chronic relit as well.
-
they took "Street Life" off very early...always thought it might have been a last minute decision not to have any Pac collabos on Doggfather
yep

Gangstas Life.. Could That be OG from lost sessions? Snoop says "Straight Gangstas Life" in the song, and it features Nate Dogg RIP, and it seems like in the span of this week is when Nate Dogg was around. I speculate he was working on his album at the time, and laid down the vocals for Gangsta Life/Og & Eastside Party. And Snoop laid down the vocals for Never Leave me alone, for Nate Doggs album. Thats what leads me to believe that Gansgta Life is indeed OG, which isnt the original song name.
Eastside Party was recorded in the previous session I quoted, but I bet nate came and laid his vocals in the 4/3 to 4/12 sessions.

interesting.
This thread is very interesting.. one of the reasons that you still have to love Dubcc in spite of everything.
-
I just skimmed this thread and I can't believe you retards are actually putting up alternate tracklistings, and debating on what happened, who gives a fuck the album came out in 96, and wasn't even that great. Fucking Euros and their 90s obsession. (http://i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/000/001/582/picard-facepalm.jpg?1240934151)
The intrigue and interest, for me at least, is rooted in the fact that this LP was the follow up to one of the biggest records ever, in any genre.
But not only that. This follow up was created after Dre's exodus. So watching the evolution of how DR chose to fill that void and their strategy for the direction and marketing of the project is pretty cool. To me at least
-
^^ Exactly. This is by far the most interesting thread in a long while. I remember getting this album when it dropped. And was very much into death row at the time... its good to fill in some blanks, and archive a bit of history. Its fun to look back, even if its not productive.
-
another interesting thing that may be materializing, is the "Doggystyle Records Comp" that was advertised in Doggfathers cd booklet. Theres many songs throughout these sessions that would fit perfectly on something like that.

I have a feeling a lot of the above are skits. Pretty sure "Doggfather Interlude" = the Doggfather album intro, "Whats My Name REMIX" = Daz's remix that was released on DR greatest hits, "Word on The street" = that skit that appears before Freestyle Conversation: "word on the street is your beats gonna be delicate since dre blah blah" and so on.

That would be great if I used itunes but I don't. How about mediafire instead? ;D

In no particular order right now even tho I've already done it the album shouldve went like
CWalkin
Ride 4 Me
Up Jumps Tha Boogie- maybe as a Single bonus track
I Will Survive
Too Blacc
County Blues
Ride On (Caught Up)
Too High
Groupie
Vapors
Blueberry
You Thought
Sixx Minutes- with better mixing tho
Me And My Doggz
Eastside
Eastside Party
Intro
Outro
Word On The Streets (skit)
Gold Rush - another Single bonus track
Head Doctor
Midnight Luv
Downtown Assassins
Snoop's Upside Ya Head - another Single bonus track
Wake Up
Traffic Jam
So so so much more could've become of that album its crazy how Suge or Snoop for that matter even let that fly.
I'm sure we're still missing out on songs that should've been on there instead. The released version of this album will puzzle me for the rest of my life.
-
Now that I think about it I guess Snoop had no choice but to get out of his contract so he released a less potent album with a lot less bass
Becuz even if he was trying to brighten up his image he still had better material to do it with
-
Doggfather was near release anyway - Snoop told at House of Blues somethin like "I know u waitin for this CD". It would look diffrent if Pac wasnt shot.
-
why was STREETLIFE not on DF?
-
ima have 2 do one like this for violence of tha lambz
-
I've been bumpin some doggfather songs like crazy recently and it make me come back to this thread.
Honestly I didn't have time to check out the whole opening post, but are these really ALL of the songs that were at one point intended for the album or are there some songs missing ?
Because if there are all songs here I might start a little tracklist improving discussion like in my other thread bout the "Da Game.." album....

why was STREETLIFE not on DF?
Yea it was stupid move. Im not shocked that they didnt use If There a Cure, because of ctotally other climate compares to whole disc, but Street Life is excellent for Doggfather...
-
why was STREETLIFE not on DF?
I don't think Suge wanted any 2Pac features on the album. I think he wanted to show that Snoop was capable of dropping a solid follow-up album without a heavyweight feature that might standout a bit too much, much like when Tha Dogg Pound dropped 'Dogg Food' without any Dr. Dre beats included (although this is, of course, up for argument).
-
Yea and Doggfather was fail compare to Doggystyle :P

And are the songs walk the walk & come on home unreleased ? Or did they leak at some point or were released with a different Name ?
Same goes for word on the streets & gangsta life as well as Get Up To Get Down, Bugsy, Stone Cold Corleon, Been So Long, No Recognition, Droppin Bombs, In The Rain & hot line
Lots of songs id like to know about, maybe someone here can help...
-
Just found out that some of the tracks were LB Crew songs...
But anyway:
How about leftover tracks from the album ?
I know that "Dogg Collar" from The Chronic Re-Lit was intended for the album, same goes for "Work It Out" with Shaq & Mista Grimm...
Other songs from The Chronic Re-Lit, the Pac songs and others are all on the timeline.
And I also think some of the Death Row Lost Sessions Track were intended for this album, there are songs that fit perfectly with the "doggfather vibe" on there....

'Caught Up' for sure, since it's got Charlie Wilson on it, who was all over the album.
-
That song was on "The Lost Sessions" if im not mistaken ?
But yeah definetely a doggfather leftover.

From what I remember it was snoop who decided not to put any 2pac tracks on there after his death as he didn't think it was appropriate at the time. I think he said he felt he would be profiting from his death and did it out of respect for his mother.
Even though pac had a falling out with him, snoop had mad love and respect for him even though he didn't want to get involved with the bad boy beef to the level pac was taking it to.
-
The 2Pac tracks that were intended for Doggfather were "Street Life" & "Just Watchin" correct ?

Just read the thread homie :D

So from what I've read it were 3 songs with Pac, "Street Life" "Just Watchin" & "Out The Moon"...
But wasn't the original version of "Out The Moon" with Lil C Style instead of Pac ?
-

Yes but the OG would be from the LBC Crew sessions that predate Doggfather by a year or two
-
Ok, always thought Lil Style was good on the song, but he can't beat Pac 8)
-
What about also making a new custom made tracklist for this album here ? ;D
Maybe this also supports the other thread bout the "Da Game" album...
Especially DF had potential to be a great to classic album...

Since in the Daz RRGB Thread it was posted by DoBuyAlbums & Infinite that OG was a leftover from DF but its not on the list if I looked right, can anyone confirm this and maybe also one or two more tracks ? @Infinite & @DoBuyAlbums maybe you know a couple more...

I think its the track listed as Gangstas Life. Snoop says it late in the song

Yeah seems likely now that you say it....
Maybe we can name some more of the tracks on that timeline....
There are surely some of the skits on there.

What about the features snoop did outside the death row camp during these days ? Anyone here got some songs from that era ?
-
Looked it up a bit and snoop wasn't really doin much features outside the dr camp, something he mentioned in an interiew once i think. He talked bout suge not authorizing features outside the dr camp, and how master p let him literally do what he wanted feature wise...
But on topic O.G. shouldve definetely been on the album, just fits the mood perfectly and the song is a classic 8)
And theres more songs of that caliber that couldve made the album a classic..

Actually nah, it doesn't fit the album.
*i know this belongs n the hook up spot but i wanna share this with the world*
This is an album with the best of the 96' recording sessions... A more gangsta version of Tha Doggfather... the Snoop that we all love. Part II with all of the more positive songs like (2001 & ujtb) will be on that.
I added beats behind the Intros and Outros and Ride 4 Me
"Ride 4 Me" http://www.zshare.net/audio/58108865299b53ef/ :o

Now Pitchfork'd is a style of Mixing created by me that pretty much gives the record a more gritty and grimier sound. A more dusty and darker vibe but same tempo... some of the songs have lil' skips in them but everytime i tried to change the sample rate it always froze...so fuck it.
here's an example of what I mean:

yeah If I remember correctly Soopa produced 2 of those tracks...I think LT produced the other one
-
Yup seemingly Soopafly produced Quite Obvious & Once Again, while LT Hutton did "Got To Do Wrong"
If I remember "Once Again" even leaked quite a time prior to the album release ?
-
Wassup, I'm not sure about it but i just listened to the song "The Shit For This" by Snoop & Tray Deee, and this could damn good be a doggfather track. From snoops flow to the beat and a feature with tray deee to the additional title of the song beeing "21 Jump Street Part 2" (the original was also snoop & tray deee on the mwtc soundtrack) it seems very likely. And then there is of course a line by snoop that goes:
Nigga you ain't ready for this shit we're about to bring,
Now you all hail the doggfather kiss my ring
What y'all think ?

Who's the guy in the ride 4 me skit (the one where snoop is giving his homie an advice for a robbery) ? It's bad azz I think, but don't know fo sure.
And on the other skit with that sentrelle song playing in the background also on this album, is that bow wow that snoop is talking to ?

Yeah, unfortunately there is no information on it in the booklet either
-
Bringing it back like an eating disorder.

some of he early tracklistings were better than what eventually was released on retail imo..."Downtown Assassins". "Gold Rush" and "Blueberry" are still my joints though
