i can't touch a Japanese RPG anymore, i played every american version of Final Fantasy up to number 8 and that one just ruined the series for me, it felt like a total rehash of all the FF's before it
so then i started playing american and european RPGS and i'll never go back... those are real RPGS, freedom of choice, you get to design your own character in most of them, alot of them have more than one ending... in my book these three options alone make these RPG's better than japanese ones
-
Goldeneye N64
thats tha gangsta shit....thats better than madden when playin with homies

FF8 was my 1st RPG so i didn't know anything about previous storylines which deffinately helped .
As for American and Europea RPGs , I'm not really a big fan of total freedom in videogames , I like having a certain path that I have to go through to continue the storyline while being able to finish the odd side quest, like the FFs , Chrono cross ,chrono trigger etc
Also ,a lot of Japanese RPGs have different endings

if you stopped playing the ff series after 8 then you missed out on a couple of good games. i disliked 8 too (a whole lot). the characters in that game just seemed so wack. part 9 and 10 are actually pretty good games though.
as for good rpg games on the ps2... phantasy star universe looks like it's going to be great, especially if you loved phantasy star online. everything in the game looks at least 5 times better from graphics to control. everybody coined kingdom hearts as a kiddy game but it's actually pretty good. .hack was pretty enjoyable for me even though the plot was sort of corny. the gameplay can also be repetitive after a while.
games to stay away from are xenosaga and suikoden 3. both are very slow paced and will have you bored in no time.

the RPG's i've gotten into are
Jade Empire...perfect blend between Martial Arts and and RPG
KOTOR 1 & 2.... 1st one was excellent, 1 of the best star wars games ever...second one is ok, had it's bugs and the story line was weak
Vampire The Masquarade: Bloodlines... has more style than most games i've ever played...it actually makes you think you're in the game
Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind... the GTA of RPGs.....total freedom over character and story
Deus Ex: Invisable War.... another one of those engrosing games
to me, a Japanese RPG can't hold a match to any of these

Mario Kart For Snes!

The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To the Past on SNES is the greatest game of all time.

Yeh, everyone would always want to be Oddjob because he's so short no one can shoot him
lol yeah i always made a "no oddjob" rule.
nobody ever wanted to be jaws because he was so big. I was always the helicopter pilot. That game for multiplayer was amazing, i still play it with friends once in awhile.
-
Don´t know which one is my favourite.. but for about the last 2 years it has to be PES 3 and PES 4 in multiplayer...
