Title: European Superstate
Post by: Don Seer on November 18, 2002, 04:41:36 AM
There's talk in the media at the moment about Europe wanting to create its own independant army for defence + maybe more.

Problem being that the member states have to agree. Another thing is that this means we would be a comparable to the US in many more areas than at present where individual countries specialise in certain areas. (e.g. The UK is traditionally a strong Naval force)

Another problem I see (altho it may not be admitted) is that (unlike the US) because our countries are in some cases 1000s of years old we have historical bias towards and against certain countries.

Hmm, I don't see why that would be necessary, but more power to them if europe feels the need.  I would think the u.n. is close enough to that for the moment, but who knows, the world is getting crazy.

But. The UN is becoming seen as useless.

Europe feels the need to emerge as a superpower to protect itself especially in the light of Sept 11th.

I'd like to see an EU army, but i can't see it goin down, because of all the grudges European countries hold against each other, very rarely do they all agree on anything.

I'd like to see it happen though because it would take the pressure off the US internationally, as they would'nt have to step in and deal with other countries problems all the time, the EU could share the load, especially in countries with an anti-US stance, which could lead to less hostilty.

On second thought, it might be a good idea to do that, lol for the above reasons.  I would never worry about a european superstate threatening the u.s., I'm sure we would have policy differences, but we'll always be allies.

Man I Pray This Never Happens

The ESC Is Bad Enough - But A Superstate?! Fair Enough Ally With Nations But Not Join Together Completely For That Purpose.

You Think ANYTHING Would Ever Get Done?! Italy Only Had One Gear In War, Reverse. France Avoid Most Confrontation These Days...Half Of The EU Hold Grudges Against Each Other, It Would Never Work...

I Have No Real Problem With Other Countries But Europe As A Collective Is A Joke - Im Sorry But It Is - And I Guarantee That In Years To Come There (If Were All Still Here!) Will Be Some HUGE Confrontation Over Policy/Money/Leadership Etc That Will Cause Major Problems.

Wow, but I dunno, it might be hard to establish a collective army for Europe.  If it does however, it'll be kinda like a lil UN lol...I guess it could be good in sum way, cuz like Joachim said, it would take sum pressure off US and defend itself better.  But its just kinda hard seeing them all workin together, and if it does, theres a chance it might collapse.  Lets see how it turns out, peace

Well in theory it is a good idea I suppose, but like other people have said, the differences between the European countries would mean that there would just be a lot of inner fighting. This is basically summed up by this quote from Michael Caine in Austin Powers 3

"There are only two things that I can't stand in this world:
People who are dismissive of other people's cultures, and
The Dutch!"

That just about says it all.
