So I wanted to ask what you think of artists reusing verses or parts of verses on other song, we can also discuss some examples, maybe this will also bring clarity to some "which song was the first one" discussions....

But May I is a sick track, with 3 dope verses 8)
Obviousley May 1 wasmade first and the one verse was partly reused for the jd song

I think it's lack of creativity, lack of passion for the craft, and wack. as an artist you suppose to keep ya pen game sharp and keep honing your craft. we often wonder why some rappers can't deliver an album as great as their best shit...they ran outta recycled verses to spit.

I dont really have a problem with it...Daz has used his "Don't Stop" verses and Kurupt his "Started" verses numerous times...both original tracks were on "The Last of Tha Pound"

we often wonder why some rappers can't deliver an album as great as their best shit...they ran outta recycled verses to spit.
Also Snoops verses for May I (for example) was probably written by him, and 6 other rappers in the room...
Whereas he would've just have to change a few words for the JD track...and fuck whoever helped him write it the first time :D
I remember when I bought dead man walkin' it did have hella writers on that track in the credits.

It doesn't really bother me, provided that the verse comes from a song that was likely going to be shelved. Death Row did it a lot, as has been pointed out.

Yeah that one snoop verse was used by him a lot of times, but I don't really have an issue with it since besides midnight love these tracks were never officially released and probably just experiments to see which beat and guests fits the verses best, and it wasn't really planned to release all the different versions

Jayo Felony was the king of recycling verses at one point, dude would spit a 16 freestyling at a radio station then go use that same verse for a feature and then proceed to make a solo track using it

Eminem would do that a lot, with those verses he'd spit on the Wake Up Show or whatever. Even some of his rounds from battles got re-used.

I really don't mind that in Hiphop if you're 'calling back' to an old verse of your own, or paying homage to another. It's an established part of the art form
If you're a mash and dash rapper tho, and every other verse is interchangeable...then it's just lazy

It's ok to do it, but if its credited. If you're taking a full verse, song or hook and only changing a word or 2 then you owe the original writer. Goes without saying

crooked I has reused most of his 90-s stuff and early 2000 stuff in his 2008- and after era.
IO have heard over 20 and maybe over 30 times where crooked recycles his stuff. I feel like alot of his hop hop weekly and reloaded stuff was just dope rhymes he had on virgin and death row that never got released.
how was crooked supposed to know that his 1996/7 music would be released in 2013 and 2015 on the Cstyle presents Vol1 before the pipe was open and the vol 2 coming out soon.
and when all this death row untouchable / bad guy stuff leaked, you hear all these orginal verses and bars he modified on the weekly and reloaded sessions. and even pig face, and his solo album
it makes sense for him to use some of that gold if he thought nobody would ever hear it.
I just wish he would respit some of his classics, like djs and mcs live or a reboot of it....

I also noticed snoops part on "What Y'all Want" by Krazy from NL is partly recycled from his unreleased song "Nightmares" with goldie loc
But that joint is way doper than the lame version that was officially released

the thing about reused verses is that only fans of the artist point it out. its the haters who hear the fans that blow it out of proportion.

Regarding the Death Row artists and songs, it was common practice there to 'cut and paste' verses, and rerecord stuff. There was some interview where a producer (Glove?) said that most of the vault was just reels containing elements of songs and there was nothing really that 'finished' (Dre just used to mash it all together)...but enough stuff for a bunch of albums if they ever put it together.
So yeah, I'm ok with it. Stuff got shelved or delayed and the artists just wanted for their shit to get heard. It's interesting from a historical point of view tho

...Since I am a quality over quantity kind of fan I have no problem with it. I would rather listen to a quality verse 100 times then 100 different wack verses.
It seems like I have heard a lot of reused Snoop verses, like the verse he used on Warren's I Want It All album for "Game Don't Wait" it seemed like I heard on a couple other songs. Then of course Eminem has a lot of reused stuff that somehow gets labeled a "Freestyle" when it is clearly not a freestyle.

Right now I'm checkin some more of the Dead Man Walkin/Lost Sessions/Greatest Hits cuts there are surely 2 or 3 more reused verses on there I think...
But as I said can't blame them a bit, not all of the songs were ever really planned to be released, so there was obiousley a lot of testing of the verses on different beats..

yeah.. it's funny he recorded two quality tracks "Midnight Love" and "Poor Young Dave" and those don't get released, but the trash he did with No Limit did.

Found another one while listening to that "Smokefest" compilation
Too Black was also on Dead Man Walkin) has the same lyrics as "Got To Do Wrong"
Seems to be a remix with another beat that hadn't been released until the album came out.

Anyone here still knows that song "Money" by Snoop ?
It was on a compilation named "Tha Unreleased Vol. 1" and also on the advance version of the last meal...
Think that one later turned into "Paper'd Up" on PTCTBDB, the first verse is identical and on the old version theres also an additional verse.
Anyone here remembers that leak/song ? Believe it was also named Paper'd Up on some advance version didn't it ?
