Title: Question for forum about meaning of "native toungue"
Post by: TraceOneInfinite Flat Earther 96' on February 16, 2008, 09:17:46 PM
What exactly does "native toungue" mean?  Because I have a friend, who's mother and father were Latino, and spoke to him mostly in Spanish, but he says that because he was born in America and raised in America his native language is English.

Can some of yall drop knowledge on this subject.  Peace.

Let me clarify one point.  He says that both Spanish AND English are his native language.

Can you have two "native language"?

native definition from dictionary.com

1.   being the place or environment in which a person was born or a thing came into being: one's native land.

So if the latino was born in america and was spoken english to while being raised i would say english is the native language

www.dictionary.com  "native language"

Main Entry:     native language1
Part of Speech:     n
Definition:     the language that a person acquires in earliest childhood; also, the primary language of a community; also called primary language, mother tongue

www.dictionary.com  "mother tongue"

moth·er tongue      /ˈmʌđər ˈtʌŋ for 1; ˈmʌđər ˌtʌŋ for 2/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[muhth-er tuhng for 1; muhth-er tuhng for 2] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation

1.   the language first learned by a person; native language.  People first learn from their mother and father.  And since the example described here, was spoken to in Spanish by their mother and father from birth, then that makes Spanish the language they first learned; thus making their native language Spanish.l

^^^ I can look up words on dictionary.com as well.  People first learn from their mother and father.  And since the example described here, was spoken to in Spanish by their mother and father from birth, then that makes Spanish the language they first learned; thus making their native language Spanish.
