Title: Please tell me some good books
Post by: budsmokeronly on January 21, 2003, 10:04:06 PM
I really despise reading.  I think the reason why is because the only books that I ever read, are college textbooks that I need to read for class, which are boring as fuck.  But anyways lack of reading has made my reading skills quite poor.  I can't focus on anything I read pretty much, and I just don't pay attention to it, even tho I am reading it.  Plus, some books can just teach u so much.  So if u guys could list some really good books for me that would be great.  Please give a bit of a description of the book too.  I really want books about life, phsycology, logic, philosophy, good lesson learner books, books that can really give sum good advice, etc.

thanks in advance for anyone who helps.

Man, you may not believe it, but I never read books, and never have.  If I sit down to read a book, after about 5 pages, usually I'll fall asleep.  The only books i'll ever read are things about certain subjects I like, like I'll go to barnes and nobles, and look at their clearance section, and buy things that look good; if it's a book on egypt, or something, i'll buy it, or a book on art, or a book on space exploration, something interesting like that.  I know i'm missing the boat, but I just don't ever take the time to sit down and read.

A few specific books I WOULD reccomend, though, are the Bible (of course).  Even if you're not religious, it's got some great stories in it, and everybody should have a knowledge of it, so they can discuss it.... Like did you know that Solomon was a great judge? He once had 2 women come to him, who both said that there baby had been stolen by the other one.  Solomon pulled out a sword, and said he'd cut the baby in half, and give half to each woman; one woman said "No! she can have the baby" and Solomon realized that she was the true mom, because she cared about the baby.  TONS AND TONS of stories like that in the bible, it's an amazing book.

Also, when I was in high school, I tried to read every stephen king book, LOL.  I made it up to the Talisman (frmo the beginning) before I went crazy; I was in a BAD mood while I was reading them, lol it was crazy I got all caught up in it.  I must have read 20 of his books in a row, they were ALL good, pretty much.

No I have not read the bible yet.  I am not an aethist or anything like that, I just was never raised religisouly at all, although now I think it is pretty interesting.  I do want to read the bible, but I have tried a couple of times and had no clue what anything meant.  but someday I will read it.  Like Trauma's line, "did you know that soloman was a great judge?", well I don't even know who soloman is.

SGV that book sounds good.  I really like autobiographies, or biographies, especially if it is gang related.

Lil bullet- that book sounds pretty good, maybe I will check it out.

"did you know that soloman was a great judge?", well I don't even know who soloman is.

He was a great judge.

LOL

J/K

In the bible, after the people were brought to the promised land by moses, they grew corrupt.  They were governed by a series of Judges who god placed on the earth to guide them, the greatest being Solomon.  The bible says there hasn't been a man that wise before or after, so basically he's the wisest man that ever lived, and a judge (king) of Israel (the group led by moses).   The bible says "The wisdom of god was with him", interpreted as he was such a righteous man, god gave him the answers to everything.  Unfortunately, he still screwed his life up, lol.

if you aren#'t used to reading a big book and get bored easily it might be a good idea to pick up this one. it a collection of short sci-fi 'cyberpunk' (mostly not all) type works.

the good thing about short stories is you can read most of them in one go so u dont have to worry about leaving the book for a long time or whatever and u wont get bored of the book.

William Gibson - Burning Chrome

here's an amazon link with some reviews etc

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0441089348/104-0836170-0700739?vi=glance

i used to be right into this stuff. but he's fallen off.. well kinda he's sidestepped into some weird analysis about the virtual world created by the modern media. no one else can write shit like him, they come off as cheap imitations I see through their efforts to copy his ideas... they just cant to it. (i think they need me to show em whats obviously wrong)

yeah I read that book in HS.  Its a great book, I really liked it.  It was like the only book that I read in my junior and senior year.  None of the other assigned books interested me.  I read the first half of malcolm X, but the second half was just too boring for me.

i would have to say "Through the eyes of the Judged, Stories of Incarcerated Young Men" one of the tightest books i ever read, tell bio's of like 15 different guys who are currently either in treatment, or in prison. They got some foo, tellin stories about how they used rob stores, beat up cops, burn girls with cig's.
