wrote the hook for "Bitches Ain't Shit", which supposedly was a opening line that was turned into a hook and Snoop was the one who got to say it.
Short Juan Epstein videos, for those of you familiar with Juan Ep..
Talks about
- New direction to "Lion" & a possible return of "Dogg"
- His latest album having writers (not really a suprise i suppose)
- Dogg Pound working on new material
- Clarifying the Nas & 2pac story
- Lack of Grammy wins
Etc.

possible return?!?!

LOL
-
possible return?!?!
Well, that's what they asked him. Cuz according to Snoop he differentiates the 2. The question was if he would
return to Dogg, musically, as in rapping or rapping that gangsta shit or if he would forever stay the way he is now or even
balance the 2.
Watch the video for his his response.

I didn't feel like listening to the whole 30+ minute interview, but it didn't really seem like he touched on the Pac-Nas confrontation when I found the segment that brought that up between when they were talking about Will Smith and then the Grammys.

That would've been the wackest shit X ever wrote! :D

ten year from now snoop gonna say rbx wrote the whole doggystyle album.

Yeah i agree with all of you ^
But it's weird. Snoop can actually rhyme tho just listening to him freestyling, which was one of many reasons ppl
wanted to see you freestyle back in hip-hop's early days especially when they saw situations like Caz and Sugar Hill gang thing and so on. A regular thing in the industry.
It may just be that Snoop can rhyme words for fun or like a convo but cant really write full 16x3's (3 verses) and stuff. Snoop might've just been a marketable, entertaining, "it-factor" having guy
who had alot of help. It is a business at the end of the day. Every entertainer in the ent business is a business, not an artist, despite what you guys think.
But on the other hand it happens in the industry alot. There is no one, literally one, that calls themselves writers that can sit and write for years without having everything sounding repetetive or just lacking new ideas. No matter how good you are it's a regular thing in the industry. Ppl help with ideas, sometimes write songs, sometime help create ideas, sometimes co-writes or whatever. It's harder for rappers than ppl think. When you're a singer what you're essentiall selling is your voice. Most ppl care more about delivery and the voice than what they talk about, hence why they have ppl write for them. When it's rock it's more about the instrumentals. With rap what you're selling is your words. Not anyone else's just yours for years, everyday and for every album.
Even a comedian have writers, doesn't mean they haven written anything but doesn't make them less of a comedian if they never did.
But with hip-hop it's hard. With someone like Snoop is even harder considering that some believe ppl ghostwrote his early material as well so it's hard to give thoughts on this. But some might just give him a pass considering that Snoop never was a lyricist per se, he was more flow/style/delivery with a fresh sound.

Snoop's dumb ass says "coast to coast, LA to Chicago" hahaha
-
Snoop has always used ghost writers.
DOC, RBX, and Kurupt all supposedly wrote for Doggystyle
Bad Azz & Tray Deee are rumored to have wrote most of No Limit Top Dogg
BCT had DOC and some younger cats
Ego Trippin had Shawty Redd, Problem and some other new West artist
That Lay Low verse was dope, figured Snoop didn't write it
-
Crooked ghost wrote for Kurupt in "tha row" era too
so even the Kingpin isn't above ghost writers adly

They ain't ghost writers if their names are listed. Bad Azz wrote Snoop's verse on "Just Dippin" and i can't remember the song that Tray Deee wrote right now, but he got credited for it too. Where did you hear that The D.O.C., RBX and Kurupt all wrote for "Doggystyle"? The D.O.C. wrote some songs on "BCT" and got credited for it and same with Problem, Bad Lucc and other dudes that have written for Snoop after they started workin' with him as far as i remember.
Crooked ghost wrote for Kurupt in "tha row" era too

on a wake up show appearance....obviously post death row if that helps narrow it down

Crooked I said that?

Crooked I ghostwriting is the only way his shit could get on an album.

Crooked I ghostwriting is the only way his shit could get on an album.
what do you mean?? Crooked's been featured on like 100 albums over his career...remember dude started rapping as a teenager in the mid 90s.
just too bad Crooked is either too scared to too apathetic about dropping his own legit debut album. wide awake had to do it for him #smh

I'm J/P. I remember the first time I heard him was on that song with Kurupt and Xzibit Step up. This is the art of manslaughter. He killed it. That song was three of the west's greatest in their prime ripping it.

i always felt Kurupt embarrassed himself by putting those 2 on a song with him cuz Crooked murked it with a perfect verse and Xzibit was damn near perfect on it too....meanwhile Kurupt spits an average rhyme
i slept on Crooked until about 2003 which is when I realized his true greatness...before that i just thought of him as a nice west coast rapper
-
Again, like in so many interviews you can see that Snoop clearly has a problem with Eminem. He always seems to have the need to remind people that he was the first Dre Act to blow up. Ive seen this in soooo many videos/interviews.

I wouldn't blame him. After Em came out, snoopy was old hat.

Kurupt was alright. He didn't spit any bullshit like on Xxplosive. "Not one is nearly/ Severe 'cause I severely impair emcees/ Near me, oppose and fear me, I got plots and theories" that part was always nice.

Kurupt brought it...just went up against two superior verses by Crook and Xzibit... he also used that same verse on an unreleased Dogg Pound track from the 90's

That was a good interview, going to pick up the album tomorrow.
And yeah, and Xzibit definitely did his thing on "Lay Low".

still my favorite verse from crooked. i´m surprised kurupt put that on his album , it´s too good for him lol . his downfall started from streets is a mutha. now i like that album a lot but you can hear the direction he´s about to go.

Tha Streetz Iz A Mutha is a very good album for the posse album feel (two posse cuts, pretty much everybody from the dpgc featured), the varied and dope guests(xzibit, crooked i, dungeon family, krs one), the consistent production, and the vibe but as far as Kurupt's skills, he had already fallen off a bit. He was dope on occasion (trilogy, step up, callin' out names) but he also gave us a lot of bland, insipid verses.
-
thats why tha streetz is my fav dpg album.
-
thats why tha streetz is my fav dpg album.
Yeah.. the West was having their resurgence at that time, I remember the album was released on the same day as Dre's album and I of course bought both.
Clearly though, Dogg Food is the best DPG album. Streetz is good but Dogg Food is classic.
-
I ain't sad whic one is classic, i sad MY FAV. ;)

Thanks for postin' this. Never knew that Xzibit wrote Snoop's verse on "Lay Low".
that's a disappointment that was one of the best snoop verses i've heard and to find out now that x wrote it....it's like what the fuck did snoop write ?
DOC wrote most of snoops stuff going back to the Chronic and Doggystyle. That's why snoop appeared to fall off lyrically and flow-wise from Doggfather and on.

DOC coached Snoop in his early days, which is different from ghostwriting, even DOC acknowledges that. DOC did ghostwrite for snoop later on (imagine, etc.). Snoop was never good lyrically though, he he could freestyle and he could write songs for him and others like Daz or Dre, and put together clever raps from time to time (nuthin but a g thang), but he's never been lyrical ala Kurupt, Crooked I, Ras Kass, etc.
-
Yeah, The D.O.C. have said in the past that he teached Snoop how to write songs and they both wrote for Dre and so did RBX. I'm almost sure that Snoop wrote most of his own shit on "Doggystyle" and maybe got some help from The D.O.C. and RBX. Snoop wrote "Deep Cover" too except for the first lines which Dre wrote.

So Kurupt wrote "bitches aint shit but hoes and tricks" :o :o give the man a Grammy!
-
Doggfather has some great songs, but he def wasn't close to how he was rhyming on Doggystyle, which is of course due to Dre, but also because DOC wasn't writing / coaching on his flow. There were no songs like "the shiznit" where Snoop is flowin on a beat like that. That rhyme structure is actually complex at times and that's DOC's influence.

In an interview, DOC said that Snoop did Tha Shiznit as one take though, as a freestyle.
I think it seems more complex when he freestyled verses because he went on those random runs of rhyme like:
"see you know I'm not European, being all I can, when I put the motherfucking mic in my hand, and..."
"two one, um, dumb, diddy dum, here I come, with the gat and the guitar will strum, I'm..."
While stuff he wrote down he was usually a lot simpler like, "so much drama in the LBC / kinda hard being Snoop D, O, double G"
I think the big problem with his rhyming on Doggfather was just the delivery, seemed a lot more tired, bored,
not as hyped up and alert as he did on Doggystyle... also on Doggystyle, Dre probably cut out any wacker rhymes he did and just
kept the dope ones.
-
Dre works hard on getting the artist to give the perfect delivery/cadence etc. and emphasis.
Doggfather was probably more like first take stuff
-
tha doggfather is one of snoop's best albums.

Yeah, that definitely sums up what it sounded like...
Even though I know a lot of people don't like the songs Snoop did with the Neptunes,
I did think they were good at getting a good vocal take from him, he sounds more
lively on the tracks he did with them than some of his other stuff.
tha doggfather is one of snoop's best albums.
In hindsight, yes, but when it first came out it sure didn't seem like it would be!

You're right, Snoop sounded perfect on a few songs that deserved to blow up. It's a shame in these days of so called producers makin beats on their bedroom PCs, ain't no one producing the artists vocal like that now. People forgot what a producer role should be
-
Crooked ghost wrote for Kurupt in "tha row" era too
so even the Kingpin isn't above ghost writers adly
I remember Crook talking about this but always wondered about it. Like, what the fuck did he write? Kurupt dropped some weak-ass songs on that era, and even the better stuff was pretty underwhelming lyrically. Dude was holding out on him lol

People take credit for a hook idea or part of a verse. Dude was probably in the room and chipped in a couple times. Kurupt probably does it too

IMO "Against Tha Grain" was decent...sure his lyrics were nothing special but his delivery was still vicious and the production was underrated

Yeah ATG had some cool songs, but like you said it was carried by Kurupt's presence and the production. I meant to talk more about lyrics specifically, if he did have a ghostwriter during that time they did a horrible job.

"Against Tha Grain" should've been released with songs from the "ATG" EP. Would've been classic.

True. Albums like Da Game is to Be Dold, Malice, and R&G obviously go to the bottom of the list therefor pushing Doggfather up.
I never liked the album though. I love dark albums but this album wasn't necessarily dark it was dull and uninspired. He no longer had that youthful energy he had on Doggystyle. The album had no direction, and Snoop really sounded like he was already exhausted from the rap game. It's too bad songs like Street Life, Midnight Love, Head Doctor, etc got plucked.

Eh, no Vaseline Pt II was cool for what it was but I wasn't really impressed by the rest of it.

I think as well, because we had only ever heard Snoop over Dre production up until around 94, no one really realized that on the Chronic
and Doggystyle we were hearing Snoop at his very, very best, but everyone just assumed that was "normal" Snoop...
So on Tha Doggfather, we actually got "normal" Snoop who didn't have someone to give him 5 star production and get
him to do the vocals over and who only ever used his very best vocal takes and never let us hear any of his wacker verses.
I very clearly remember a quote from Snoop in an interview around the time of Doggystyle's release where he said something along the lines of,
"we made a lot of wack shit, but y'all just didn't hear any of it," referring to how Dre would only go with the very best bits and pieces they recorded.
So on Tha Doggfather, it felt like Snoop fell off, but really it was just because we heard way more of his mediocre stuff and takes where
he didn't push himself or trim away the weaker stuff.
To really make another true Snoop Dogg classic, you'd obviously need top-class production, but I think a big part would be that you'd
need to have someone pick out with him the best parts of his verses and the best vocal takes and how Dre told him to half-sing
parts of his verses and stuff like that...
The big problem is, back then, Snoop was just coming into the game, so he would listen to everything Dre
told him to do, but now he's "Big Snoop Dogg" (or Lion or whatever) and is "the Boss" it's probably way harder directing him in
the studio because he's the big established star now and won't want someone telling him how to do it.

if snoop let me produce his next abum, i'd bring yall a classic...i dont really make beats, but when i oversee a project i take what i've learned from dre and perfect everything to it's full potential

and Doggystyle we were hearing Snoop at his very, very best, but everyone just assumed that was "normal" Snoop...
The big problem is, back then, Snoop was just coming into the game, so he would listen to everything Dre
told him to do, but now he's "Big Snoop Dogg" (or Lion or whatever) and is "the Boss" it's probably way harder directing him in
the studio because he's the big established star now and won't want someone telling him how to do it.
if snoop let me produce his next abum, i'd bring yall a classic...i dont really make beats, but when i oversee a project i take what i've learned from dre and perfect everything to it's full potential
snoop needs niggas who will tell him the truth about his shit. even when he didn't have dre he dropped some dope shit cause he had fred wreck, soopa, battlecat, etc. and niggas like tray deee around. when he lost tray deee he really lost it.

damn it's crazy how snoop went from bein' the ghostwriter to bein' ghostwritten for he got as much ghostwritten shit as eazy e if not more.

Damn listened to that interview again and I'm still dissappointed that this is actually xzbits verse...
I'm sure snoop couldve came up with something equally dope, he had some dope lyrics on the album but I believe they rushed the album process after suge leaked the advance version on his website...

What? Almost every verse from Eazy was written by somebody else.

Just watched that interview with Snoop & Strong Arm Steady again, and I had already forgotten it but Krondon actually wrote "Criminal Set" by Xzbit....
Crazy to see how so many classic songs came from artists switching verses back n forth with each other..
