Title: Vanilla Ice - Why The Hate?
Post by: =[Euthanasia]= on May 04, 2002, 04:49:32 AM
I'm not gonna lie, when "Ice, Ice Baby" came about I thought it was pretty tight, lol, the beat was pretty dope & the lyrics, even though he didn't pen them alone, were still pretty good. I never bought the single or his album but none the less I still liked the song. But why do peeps still hate on him? I was watching his Behind The Music the other day on VH1 & that boy has been through some shit in his time, especially after the whole rap thing blew up in his face. He tried commiting suicide due to the backlash & he's been looked at as a joke ever since, even to this very day in many peoples eyes.
Even though Eminem was obviously not inspired by him, Ice was still the first real solo white rapper to really blow up. Maybe it's the hair/dancing/costumes that people still hate about him, maybe it was the fact that he over-acted on the whole 'wanting to be black' thing, I dunno. He knows he sold out though, maybe thats where the backlash started, because he used to have all black crowds before he become big & he never used to dress in those gay costumes. He even said back then it was all about the money. The one thing that made him sound like a dick is back a few years ago when he said Suge held him over that balcony, but then a few years later he denied it when they even had it on tape as evidence!
I think another thing people didn't like about him was the fact he lied (or as he said his record company lied) about his background. They said something about him being gang affiliated, & he wasn't, lol.
I don't think any of that was bad enough for the backlash he's had to live with though, all the hate that he still gets from the press & people in general. No matter what he does now he's still gonna be known as Vanilla Ice, that white boy who tried to rap, the joke etc.
What does everyone else think about him though? Him as an MC? I don't think he was that bad of an MC considering, I mean he was just as good (or as bad, however you wanna look at it) as some of the shitty rappers that were around at that time.

Obviosuly the whole Ice Ice Baby saga was selling out and a mistake, but everyone makes mistakes. He's been through alot of shit and i dont personally think hes that bad an MC, he's also alot into that rap/rock stuff and i think his stuff is pretty good, his newest cd had a few decent cuts on it.

He doesnt deserve all the hate he gets, but he will always get it, just because he's Vanilla Ice, back when i was into that shit, i loved his Hard Rock/Rap cd Hard To Swallow, but yeah, i got no problem with Vanilla Ice, takes alot of determination to push through all the hate he gets and still make music, and pretty decent music too.

I liked the song but I hated Vanilla Ice because I was an MC Hammer fan when I was a kid. The shit back then was you either pick one of them at my school so it was like a horrible parody of a Pac VS. B.I.G./Nas VS. Jay feud. I always looked at Vanilla as a cheap Hammer clone since then.

That "Ice Ice Baby" track is wack as fuck IMO... I can't really speak on Vanilla Ice, but I heard A LOT of hiphop fans + other rappers disrespect him in songs/interviews, so I guess he wasn't respected in the hip-hop community... I personally don't care about him.

Anybody know why Eminem hate Vanilla Ice so much ? I think white rappers wasn't accepted in the hip-hop culture before Eminem came on the scene... I also believe Eminem thinks that Vanilla disprected the white rappers' legacy, which was simply non-existent before Marshall Mathers, so it don't make sense to me...

There's been quite a few white rappers before Em, the Beastie Boys, that guy from 3rd Base etc. I think Em hates him simply because it's Vanilla Ice & it's the 'cool' thing to hate on him. Thats basically why I brought up this topic, to ask why  ;D

Uhh how could I forget about the Beastie Boys... fuck... yeah I know there was some white rappers before him, but he really broke the passage for white rappers to come through... I bet Bubba Sparxxx would have a hard time blowing up if the world had never been introduced to Marshall Mathers... I bet Eminem saw Vanilla Ice as an insult to hip-hop music, to white rappers legacy... and dissed him to gain desired respect in the hip-hop community.

I think the hate came from him lyin about his past. I'm not gonna front though, I liked him when I was 10. Hammer too. And to be honest, he dropped a hot verse on a Blood Hound Gang cd called Boom recently. He went by his real name though. Rob VanWinkle for those that don't know. Give it a listen and see what you think. There are 2 guys that drop verses. He is the one that talks about Vietnam, and Mike Tyson so you know. Doesn't sound like the Vanilla people are used to at all.

Yeah, I think thats ultimetly where the backlash started, when his record company released that biography about him and it said he was gang affiliated and all that shit & when his real background was uncovered by some reporter it sort of blew up in his face. Vanilla claims he knew nothing about what they actaully put in that bio but you'd have to be pretty nieve to believe that.

Ha, he WAS a cool guy.  Everything about him was cool, at the time; a lot of people were doin' stuff like that.  I've never had a problem with Vanilla Ice, when people started dissin' him, I never did.  He did some things, but all the rappers out today are just as guilty.  He lied about his past... so does Dr. Dre.  Dre ain't never killed anybody. Snoop ain't never killed anybody.  Crooked I ain't out beating people up on the street like he says.  So, what are we laughing about?  Vanilla Ice wore those Ice suits, but yall all know what Dr. Dre wore in the world class wrecking crew.  What about those old pictures of Snoop with the Box?  Or Eminem's gay looking high school pictures, all the same thing.

As an Emcee, he wasn't ever really talented, but he could hold his own.  He never said he was the best.  "Ice Ice baby" was a great song at the time, everybody dug that.  If you want to hear two better songs off that cd, download "Stop that Train" and "Hooked" both of those tracks are tight.Typical Line:

"Now it's saturday, the day you hate most..
Why? Because from coast to coast
You see girls everyday in the club cold kickin' it
Remindin' you of baby when yall used to be wit it"

That's pretty tight, yall can't front.  I know yall all remember:

"And outta all nights, where was my crew?
Cuz this was somethin' I didn't know what to do
D already told me that the girly was strange
But I didn't know it till she pulled out tha chains
Walkin' and Stalkin' towards me witht he plan
Now I'm regrettin' all the things I done said
I'm drippin with sweat, why? Cuz I'm afraid
Hand cuffs and chains? That's a game I don't play
No doubt in my mind that this girly is the boss
Stop this train, cuz I wanna get off ~"

That stuff ain't that bad, in my opinion.  It's about the same as the stuff the Ghetto Boys were doin', and everybody thinks they're great.  He was just caught up in the wrong time period, then people felt ashamed about liking that song so much.

On his rock cd, he had a song called "Freestylin'" that was DOPE.  I dunno if it really was a freestyle, but the hook went "Freestylin' on the mic, off tha dome", there was about 4 of his boys, that freestyled the first part of the song, then Vanilla Ice, the same vanilla ice, comes in at the end and just RIPS IT UP, it's very, very tight, yall oughta download it.  It's called "Freestyle" or "Freestylin' and was at the end of his rock cd.  Another good track of his is "Pretty fly for a White Guy" he did live with the offspring a couple years back, they actually brought him up on stage, to do that song, and Ice Ice Baby.  It's on audiogalaxy.  He's done songs with the Insane Clown Posse too, that are pretty decent.  He's actually not bad at all, with all his rock stuff.  The rock remix of Ice Ice baby is great, I think.  AAIIIICE AAAIIICE BABBB-BBBYYY!!!!!! He's all screamin' and stuff, haha.  I think he's got an interesting story, he's handling all this stress very, very well.

I've heard that one, too, dope song.

Also, there's a song by some girl group (not sure which) from about a year ago, where they're talkin' about men with big dicks, and they got him to do a verse in the song, his verse is pretty dope on that, too.  I like that he still raps, even after people slammed him.

^^ I agree. He's rich beyond belief, so you know he is just in it for the music now. It is cool that he still does it among all the hate.
