Title: A mini rant about people that complain about soccer/football
Post by: Javier on May 21, 2010, 11:59:25 AM
I'm an American but since my dad is from Mexico and he's a big soccer fan I grew up watching and playing soccer.  Although my favorite sport became baseball, soccer is easily up there.  See, I understand that my interest in soccer would not be there if my dad didn't like it or shit even if I was something else beside a Mexican American.  The problem though is when people diss soccer, "oh that shit is boring" "low scoring ass games" "how can 0-0 be exciting?"  Most of these people, if they were born outside of the United States most likely they will have a bigger interest in soccer/football than any the big trio of American Sports.  Of course you'll have some exceptions, but let's recognize what would really happen if you were born in Italy, England, France, Germany, Brazil, etc.

So when the World Cup gets a lot of attention, don't be talking about how boring it is blah blah blah because more likely you would be a fan of that sport if you were raised in a different culture.

Soccer's for fags!!!

Sorry....had to do it lol. I can appreciate Soccer tho. I dont play it or anything...or even watch it regularly. But when the World Cup is goin on I tune in and pay attention. I used to play as a REAL little kid...Im talkin like 6 yrs old lol. I do gotta say tho....Im sure even big time Soccer fans hate to see a 0-0 game. Most fans whether casual...or hardcore....like some sort of offense (in whatever sport they are watching). Imagine a boxing match where no one landed a punch lol

Well yeah true point about a 0-0 game, but some can be intense.  Usually in soccer tournaments, there are Home and Away games once it reaches a playoff stage.  Let's say for example that in the first leg the score was 1-1 and they go to the 2nd leg with that score.  Right from the start, a 0-0 game is intense because the away team from the first leg has the advantage in their house because they have 1 Away goal.  If it stays 0-0, the team that made the most visiting goals passes in a tie situation.

I get what youre sayin. Especially when people ONLY look at the final score and determine whether it was boring or not off of just that. You could have a baseball game that ends 1-0.....but there was a ton of hits, stranded men on base and pretty exciting (for a baseball game). That game could be more exciting then a game that ends 4-2 with barely any hits....but one grand slam and a 2 run homer.

I think they should just take a few aspects from Football...and add them to soccer. Like...the general rules stay the same, but have them wear helmets and pads...and allow full on tackling. You would need the game to stop periodically...cus those helmets and pads are pretty heavy, and you get hot as HELL in them. But still....the tackling would be great. Imagine some guy goin up for a header...and some Ray Lewis type dude is drawin down on him....lol

There will be lots of boring games in the early stages of the World cup (as usual)  so dont blame them if they find it boring because it will be ...  European Championship overall level >>>> World cup level

As a  football fan I have no business watching a Honduras - Chili , Algeria-Slovenia or New Zealand - Slovakia .... and there like 15-20 games like this so I can understand non fans of the sport find it boring as hell

Commentators overall are shitty in every damn sport.  I wish I can just watch games with no damn commentators and just have the sounds of the stadium and fans come out.

What kind of camera angle do you suggest for a soccer game?

I watched a couple of minutes of MLS football today, and the angle was horrible, I had to turn it off. Nothing compared to the European style.

Basicially, people over here can do without America very good. There are enough nations who love football which gives it a great diversity, so football still feels like a world-connecting element even without America. They're just mad because Americans need to look down on football all the time because they can't accept the fact that the Nr 1 sport in the world
is not an 'American sport'.
America dominated culture at least since WWII in every aspect except sports. America is used to tell the world what's cool and what not and other people imitating them, they just can't get over it that others don't follow them for once. So they need to talk trash about football all the time out of envy.

To be truthful no-one outside of the US really cares of the US like soccer or not. Its the biggest and most popular sport in the world without you so no-one is getting mad!

americans just repeat sound bites, throw one soundbite in there and they'll repeat it for ages without even understanding and knowing anything about it.

a goal happens in 1 sec. the game is 90 min (5400 sec.) so even if soccer/futbol was a high scoring game, lets say 5-6 goals, that would only take about 1-2min. of the game.....so obviously there is WAY more to this game than a FINAL score.  This is what americans tend to miss.  They dont understand the history, the rivalry, the passion, the importance behind it.  There is more to a game than just 2 random teams, every game becomes HISTORY.  Goals are memorable, unlike NFL football, basketball, baseball, etc.....u can hardly remember anything from nba playoffs once they're done.  But a goal is to be remembered forever.

when i watch soccer, i enjoy the game play, not just the score, i watch to see how the other team moves the ball up the field and what players are more effective and how the other team defends and reacts.  Its a chess game, not checkers.

the reason soccer is the biggest sport in the world is because most countries are poor as fuck and soccer is a cheap sport to play. to be completely honest soccer is a good sport as far as taking a lot of skill and athletecism to play well, but at the same time it FUCKIN BORING to watch. 99% of the time its just back and forth on a big ass field without any scoring or anything. i have some friends who are real good at soccer and play this indoor league where the field is much shorter and theyre allowed to play off the walls and shit, i can stand watching that because shit actually happens

Plus American teams are franchises, a team can go from one city to another without the fans getting real upset and shit like that. No history. Every football club have history within the local area. Look what happened when Wimbledon moved to Milton Keynes.

its not about scoring, thats what ur missing

look at basketball, constant scoring but still gets boring, no one watches these sports from beginning to end, u only like highlights and end of the game.  i know NFL for sure, people watch less than half the game, basketball, most people watch last quarter

No

can you really just disregard that comment like that though?

he came across as if, "only poor fucks play it", but if you think about it & get past the way it came across, it's kind of true.

i've played or know people who have played all of the "American Sports" & to play on a competitive level of Baseball, it'll cost you two grand, just to join the team & then you need equipment, pretty pricey.

Football, all the equipment & such; Hockey, same shit as Football; Basketball is basically the African American Soccer lol; Golf is expensive.

bottom line, these sports are expensive to play, Soccer can be played with any sort of decent sized ball, on any surface, with any amount of people.

it only improves it's popularity worldwide.

i personally find it to be boring, not to mention, if you watch it on TV you have to hear that stupid buzzing noise of constant horns & shit.

but to each his own, different countries, different cultures.

If that was the case, then the poorest Americans would be playing soccer.  It's simply a culture difference.

they just play Basketball; the poorest Americans are black. :P

Explain why soccer is popular in European countries?  England, Italy, France aren't third world countries.  It has more to do with the culture than the money, by a lot.

^because they just are; sure, chalk that one up to culture.

but Muhfukka said it being cheap was why it's "the most popular sport in the world".

if Soccer costed hundreds of dollars to play, more small, poorer countries wouldn't play it as much as they do, therefore it would affect it's "worldwide popularity".

it's speculation, but it's pretty logical, if you ask me.

hahaha and even basketball you need some kind of hoops with backboards (much harder to make then putting 2 things down for a goal), a ball that actually bounces and a surface that you can bounce a ball on. and javier yeah wealthier european countries play soccer but theyre not what makes it the biggest sport in the world, at all

they have parks, but yeah, it's certainly more difficult to get a game of Basketball going than a game of Soccer.

i don't know if it's just a New York thing, because we are the most diverse state on the planet & shit, but besides parks in straight up hoods, i see plenty of Soccer being played by Spanish, Asain, Europeans, even occasionally some Americans playing.

so i mean, there are plenty who play Soccer, we're just not an elite nation, which can turn some people off to the sport & even some of you Soccer fanatics have to admit, you can understand how it can be viewed as "boring".

It seems that are a few different arguments floating around.

Debate me on the cultural side of why soccer is more popular outside the United States.  I stated why U.S. didn't develop an interest in soccer, look if they United States never had basketball, football, and baseball rise as the country rose in to a super power, then soccer would be immensely popular here.

maybe, i mean you can't prove it; but maybe because i've been introduced & given the opprotunity to play sports like Baseball, Basketball & Football & find them more entertaining/interesting, it just turned me off to Soccer.

on the flip side of that argument, it's no secret that America is the New York Yankees of the world, if you ain't a fan, you're likely a hater; so couldn't you see people in those countries, supporting Soccer & the culture around it just to stick it to America? like, "our sport is more popular & better than yours" & the fact that they are raised to like it too.

like how kids in the Middle East are raised to hate America because their parents force them to, it's gotta be similar to those countries and Soccer.

Muhfukka was pretty much spot on.The cost os the game is a huge factor in the popularity.Anybody can play soccer anywhere its easy and doesnt cost money except to get a ball.Look at hockey, its almost exclusively a white sport because its pretty much an elitist sport. It costs A LOT of money to play hockey. Most countries in the world cant even afford to have an ice rink. You saying that doesnt effect how popular it is?Yes culture is also a factor but the fact remians any poor kid can play the game it doesnt take money.

So when the World Cup gets a lot of attention, don't be talking about how boring it is blah blah blah because more likely you would be a fan of that sport if you were raised in a different culture.

the reason so many countries watch soccer is because they never got exposed to Michael Jordan or Peyton Manning or A-rod....that's the only reason they waste their time on boring soccer.

Hockey is really a bad example. If what you were saying is 100%, hockey should be the nr. 1 sport here in Norway, just like it is in Sweden and Finland.

In what way is it a bad example?Hockey is the most expensive sport to play of all major sports and its not even close.

It's ok if you guys live in denial and think the rest of the world  prefers football over American sports because they are poor. If it makes you happy...  :D
Of course it's important that you can also play the sports in your free time at nearly any location. That's why people are so enthusiastic football and basketball. You sound like it's a bad thing and that your sports are better and more complex just because they are  expensive.  :-\ That's exactly the  mentality they described @ stuffwhitepeoplelike.com

Hockey is more popular in colder environments, and again this ties into culture.  The Dominicans, Cubans, Venezuelans are also dirt poor but they prefer baseball over soccer. It's culture.

I used to detest soccer until I went to a few matches in Europe.  That shit is off the hook.  The crowd is almost 50% of the game.  It really is amazing.  Blows "American" sports crowds out of the water. But take the crowd out of it and put it on TV, it's meh to me anyways.

there are forces inside US that dont allow soccer to blow up....it will reduce the fans of basketball, football and baseball...therefore they keep it a boring game by not giving it much coverage and very little highlights.  Americans also suck at commentating soccer games, look at spanish commentators or other countries, a commentator like ray hudson and the way he analyzes the game and talks about the goals, alot of times it sounds funny as hell, but its great.

Honeslty if u look at all the hype in american sports its what MEDIA feeds people.  It's not really what people think or feel, its what they hear left and right...they see 2 people talking about it, then they see it on tv, then they see it on facebook and internet, and in their head it becomes a big deal.  Thats the same way they promote football and other things.  by building a story and hyping the shit out of it.  Well in soccer, there is so much history they dont need to do that...all they have to say is the name of the teams that are playing (ex; inter milan - manchester united) and its hype on its own for so many reasons.

And you don't really choose a sport, because it's already decided what sports are kings in the United States.  It's not secret that the most popular sports in the United States were sports that basically had leagues started here and sports that were born here.  If soccer was an American invention, it would be up there.

people choose whatever is more convenient.  Show half as  much soccer on tv as football and basketball, ill guarantee u it'll become a huge sport.  Already since the past few years espn and fox have been showing more games, people are more interested.  Alot of my friends who were the biggest soccer haters watch now and we play fifa 2010 on ps3, they have lots of fun.  But yet they dont have much access to it on tv.

its like anything else in this country man, whatever u show more of will have people interested....

flawed game?? LOOOOOLLL

American FOOTBALL is modeled after soccer buddy...its the same concept genius, get the ball to the other side, soccer is actually more intelligent cuz u actually have to SCORE when u get to the other side with a goal keeper there to stop it.
Oh and what completes a touchdown in football? a goal kick...and how important is that kick? it wins games!
u dont have to switch defense and offence in soccer, u dont have to stop the game for 10min to figure out whether the ball was an inch higher or lower  ::)
why stop the game so much?  i think american football is boring cuz of that, there is no damn flow to it, most of the game players are just standing around, thats not sport...those fat asses need to run a little more...instead of being healthy athletes these football players die at 50

its a joke man, i can write a whole essay about how american football is flawed...its just pure hype

Football still struggles in a lot of countries, and Soccer has already been big worldwide so it wont grow as fast as Basketball is.

Basketball will never overtake soccer worldwide. I'm English and I'm aware that Basketball is only actually big in about two or three european countries. Even in those european countries its small compared to soccer.

Basketball is only a HUGE sport in North America, everywhere else people do like it but its not particularly big.

Its pretty hard to say "never". Basketball isnt going to take over anytime SOON. But youd be a fool not to notice that it is increasing in popularity at a much faster rate then any other major team sport worldwide. Just 15 years ago having a European player in the NBA was pretty much an experiment. Let alone a player from South America or Asia. Like Scrappy said, in South Europe basketball is becoming huge. There is a ton of money being thrown around there for basketball. In places like China basketball is becoming ridiculous. South America as well. Maybe not in England....but thats because the English will probably never be good at Basketball lol J/K. Either way, the chances of Basketball becoming a worldwide phenomenon are much greater than the chances of Football becoming one. As a matter of fact, its a much greater chance of that...than it is that Soccer becomes very relevant in the U.S.

It depends on your definition of big. Soccer will never surpass Football in the US. That just will not happen. It wont surpass Baseball or Basketball either. So at BEST, Soccer can push to become the fourth largest team sport in the US...and even that is a going to be tough with Hockey. Basketball is already probably the #2 or #3 most popular team sport worldwide. They are much closer to the top for the world...than Soccer is to the top for just the US.

i legit LOL'D.

it felt so true; especially how the Spanish commentator was hyping shit up for no reason.

face it Soccer fans, you just love the sport because it's so nationally related; you just want to play another country or town beat them & then laugh in the other teams fans face.

in American sports, just because you live near a team, doesn't mean you like them. i HATE the New York Knicks & i root for Philadelphia 76ers; where in Soccer you don't live in Brazil & root for Argentina.

you guys treat it like Soccer determines which nation is better & go made hard; because that Simpsons thing showed, even though it was clearly overexaggerated, it's basically what you watch for 90 minutes to see one team score once, occasionally both score twice lol; no way that can hold your attention unless there is something more to it, which is there is; defending your nation's pride.

Club football exists, it's not just National teams though.  National teams only come in to play every 2 or 4 years depending on the tournament.  Meanwhile, club football happens every year, year round in each country.

Not really.  In Mexico for example, the two most popular teams are Chivas and Club America.  They're from Guadalajara and D.F., but people all over Mexico root for them.  Also, the Mexican Americas all over the U.S. root for those two teams too.  Then you have the major European clubs where people all over the world root for them.  You can find Manchester United, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Inter Milan, AC Milan, etc fans all over the world.

This pretty much sums up soccer

i legit LOL'D.

it felt so true; especially how the Spanish commentator was hyping shit up for no reason.

face it Soccer fans, you just love the sport because it's so nationally related; you just want to play another country or town beat them & then laugh in the other teams fans face.

in American sports, just because you live near a team, doesn't mean you like them. i HATE the New York Knicks & i root for Philadelphia 76ers; where in Soccer you don't live in Brazil & root for Argentina.

you guys treat it like Soccer determines which nation is better & go made hard; because that Simpsons thing showed, even though it was clearly overexaggerated, it's basically what you watch for 90 minutes to see one team score once, occasionally both score twice lol; no way that can hold your attention unless there is something more to it, which is there is; defending your nation's pride.

All of that is incorrect. Rivalries do exist but people watch football for the enjoyment of the game, which in its purest form is superb entertainment and great to watch. Sorry that you don't enjoy it, watch something else.
