Title: Joe Budden f/ The Game - "The Future" (6 months later)
Post by: GangstaBoogy on August 15, 2009, 09:26:49 PM
How do you guys feel about this song after 6 months? Honestly, I wasn't impressed with the song initially, and I think most people felt the same way cuz we were expecting something completely opposite from these 2 artist. But interestingly enough, the song has a total of 48 plays on my itunes/ipod play count lol. My opinion: the song is sick and catchy as shit. The beat is real clubbish but has a lot of energy, the autotune chorus is gets stuck in your head easily, and the verses were actually pretty good given the subject matter.

Anyways, just wondering what the rest of you think of the song now.

very catchy hook, Game's verse was real average; Budden was good, but he wasn't on his game.

honestly, one of the better club joints, that still keeps it better than that poppy shit.

real standout on Padded Room though, just didn't fit the theme of the album at all.

but hey, dudes gotta do something to get records sold to all people.

but yeah, was the type of song that should have blown up, Joey stooped down to the level of Autotune & a major artist feature.

You know, I will condone Auto-Tune under the right circumstances - Royce Da 5'9 is one of the few artists I would condone using it. It's actually a very great track, I prefer it over that HORRIBLE track known as Pump It Up or that assed out Fire song. Lol. I hope Game and Budden colaborate more in the future, possibly Game using Budden as a ghost writer. Lol. I think the reason it didn't blow up is because well he's on Amalgam which rely on you to push yourself essentially. Lol.

EDIT:

I also condone the hook singer using auto-tune. It's not that noticeable. Lol.

Wait, was that Royce using the autotune on "We Outta Here"? If so then hell yeah I'll condone it as long as he doesn't go Kanye on us.

But yeah I don't understand why they didn't push this song. I mean, he filmed a good quality video for "Touch & Go" (for reasons I'll never understand) but not for "The Future"? Shits weird. I wish too hope they work together more.

I believe it was, he's used it on a few tracks. I like auto-tune though I use to excessively hate on it, till I realized - if it's done right - it sounds good and hating on it is just the cool thing to do. Touch and Go was suppose to be on Padded Room, but got scrapped and they decided to scrap The Future video for In My Sleep. and Exxxes. It is weird.

LMAO, propably Amalgam again. I wonder why Joe is still there, wouldn't he rather sign a solo album contract with E1 or someone else, surely he can get a independent contract now? They done fucked like 2 albums of mixing for Joe.  :-\

Listening to "Pump It Up" today can give fans a total misconception of Budden, but when the song dropped in '03, it was considered ahead of its time and a massive hit.

I thought Budden was the next big thing to blow, "Pump It Up" was one of the first tracks in the 2000's that lead to the "club bangers" era that the south jumped on and made the genre what it is today. It also helped launch Just Blaze's career in a major way. Too bad Joey was the one who didn't get the huge buzz off it.

I always loved "Focus" and thought that could have been a major hit as well. The little video they had for it at the end of "Pump It Up" was the shit too. If Budden could go back to making 2-3 tracks like this per album, where he makes club bangers that are essentially better than the club bangers that are out there, but then still keep the deep content that he's had on the Mood Muziks, Padded Room, Escape Route, etc, I think he can be one of the biggest emcees in the game, if not the biggest. Dude has untapped potential in my opinion and I don't think we've seen his best work yet.

Pump It Up was a bad song, most of the songs off that album were bad; with the exception of a few.

but sadly, Pump It Up is his most major song & the only song people know by him.

like most guys on here, they ONLY heard Pump It Up; but they act like they can comment on his entire catalog lol.

Joey's first album had some great songs in my opinion, no the album isnt on the level of the Mood Musics, Padded Room or Escape Route but I thought Joe's self titled album had some standout tracks,

-Walk With Me

-Calm Down

-10 Mins

I also thought Porno Star was a good song as well

Budden is just entering his golden ear.  The kid is about to drop at least one more stand out album if not 3.  Sometimes I think it's best cats like him and Crooked never blew up as they went down a path that's more lyrical and such.

Pump It Up is fire..  I dunno what y'all talking about..  Joe came with fire verses, punchlines and flow dope.  Beat is off the hook.  There is a reason that song blew up..

That's the kinda song Joe need to make again..  If he wants to crossover, but he always says he can't do it anymore.  He doesn't really care..

And about Focus..

1) He originally wrote the song with J-Lo, called "The One".  It sounded like it coulda blew up, but label politics snuffed it out.  It would have been a J-Lo single feat. Joe.

2) Later remade into Focus, for Kay Slay's mixtape, which was a single.  Not as mainstream, but more Hip-Hop sounding.

3) Appeared on the album, but they didnt wanna use a song twice as a single, later a remix with LL Cool J was done, which was fire.  Nothing transpired from it though.

I'm with you on that. Still to this day when I hear Pump It Up in a club, or even just on a casual level, the shit knocks just as hard as the first time I heard it. As I stated, I believe Pump It Up was a few years ahead of its time. It blew up, but it didn't transcend into making Joe that household name of even a platinum record. If that song would have came out in 2005, man he'd be up there with the tops in the game I think, sales wise. Label politics, his mouth, etc have backed him into a corner.

I know he can still make a record like Pump It Up, he hasn't slouched on his lyrics one bit. Joe can make something like Pump It Up without it being a total sellout type track, he's proved he has it in him, and his diversity can help him with that.

What he needs to do is save up some bread, shut his mouth for the next year and handle the Slaughterhouse to his full abilities, and get some top notch producers for his next album to help him get that over the edge production that "Pump It Up" had. If there's anything that lacks in Joe's recent releases, it's the overall production. Pump It Up is one of the best produced rap songs of the 2000's (in my opinion I thought Just Blaze had a flawless beat with that one), and that's all Joe needs to get back into the limelight.

He's still relatively young, plenty of time for him.

On point.

Royce said this: You can have a mainstream single without selling out, you just gotta be a good enough artist to be able to crossover your emceeing abilities into a commercial song.

Joe did this with Pump it Up.

You're so correct when you say the production/mixing hurts him..

If he saves up enough dough to get a real dope beat from a big name producer, and just spends the money to mix/master that one track well, it would do wonders..  But then again, if you pricequote those producers, (and we saw what u get when u pay for a low-priced Khalil track), and Joe's comfort with where he is right now (which I'm fine with).  It might not happen.

Just saying that you damn well know Joe knows about the quality of the sound in his indie releases, and maybe if he wants to reach more people with his music, he should think about trying to go back in for another crossover hit..  In the end, it doesn't hurt anything but his pride..
