MEGA FAIL 10 years worth of recording and we get some two bit basic shit like this.

i guess that's the way it sounds, i really doubt they put out promo cds of the song when it's not finished.. the kush promo has been mixed and mastered properly

Fake? No producer credits on the disc + dark part of the disc is right through the Interscope logo & possible code numbers ;D
-
thanks, I've already accepted this as the final version
-
Yea I think its final... why would someone make a photoshoped cd disc? Unless you have way too much time, which I wouldn't be surprised, but there is no point. Also the vocals are pretty crisp; the beat just has huge reverb for effect I think. This is how it's supposed to sound.
Yea I'm disappointed too ... 10 years ???
I like the song but Detox is of mythical status and this doesn't seem to do it justice.
-
thanks jimmy dre becomes a pop star !

First time i heard this, thanks.
I actually dont mind the track but yeah, definately hard to see it fitting in on Detox.
-
:(
What did we do to deserve shitty music like this? Damn Dre........ It's almost inevitable that every artist will fall off if given enough time, but Dre is falling hard than a muthafucka
-
Fake? No producer credits on the disc + dark part of the disc is right through the Interscope logo & possible code numbers ;D
good point actually.
and LOL @ this being for Detox..
Somebody nuke Jimmy Iovine's home.

That's why this "West Coast" forum needs to spread their variety of music going East. ;)

Guess it's not fake, and now we have confirmation. The version we all had back in November is playing on the site below... :-\

stop crying babies. Its not the end of the world

stop crying babies. Its not the end of the world
Wow. Hell must indeed be freezing over, 'cause for once we agree.
-
stop crying babies. Its not the end of the world
No one said it's the end of the world. It's just the end of Dr. Dre as a respected artist and producer.
-
Bad choice. Might be a hit but in the long run... it's gonna hurt Dre's legacy.
-
Dre fell off
Someone go and attach a terabyte hard drive to his vault and lets make our own detox's
-
thanks, I've already accepted this as the final version
strange that they kept the basement effect :P

lol wish I had it somewhere.. Maybe he is listed online? lol
and @Drehelterskelter - Yeah but Jimmy made him the puppet he is today.. Shit is terrible. Fuck Dre for not havin any balls and fuck Jimmy for treatin Dre like a slave.
-
I see this huge as a intro.. fits perfectly, that kills everything bad in the song. Hope it is.
-
Dre is gay.
-
Dre better be doing the rest of the songs on his album because he is 0 for 2 with other producers
-
Thirteen songs right? Two down.
I'm going to start praying the other eleven are undoubted classics & watch you all jump back on ship.
-
is shit leak?

So far that ship is sailing shit creek fueled by the burning of a legacy. The ship itself might as well be a shit.
Hyperbolic sure but not by much.

Actually Dre said he wants six songs to be music videos. So I mean, I'll still hope that it's all classic, but to make videos, the other four songs have to be among this caliber to be converted to a music video lol.

I cant believe this shit is on DETOX.
-
I cant believe this shit is on DETOX.
-
Just Heard the song.. its not bad at all! i mean this is very radio friendly and thats what Dre needs for the moment, i like the fact that he only has one verse in there, goes with the songs topic. nice warm up and the girl kills the hook
-
This is worse then Eminems Record
-
Dre fell off
Someone go and attach a terabyte hard drive to his vault and lets make our own detox's
How nigga his first album was the Chronic!
-
the mastering is horrible... it sounds like a 80's rock tape wtf is wrong with dre

Dre fell off
Someone go and attach a terabyte hard drive to his vault and lets make our own detox's

I forgot about dre
-
I always expected Detox to be a groundbreaking album, with trend setting sounds and innovative music. This song is just following what everyone else is doing, and not even at a top notch level.
Talk about MAJOR disappointment. Damn, Dre. :-[
-
Dre has just lost it.. out of all the rappers for the first single dude goes with alex da kid producing and chooses eminem... i mean thats fine but at least produce the beat dre.. get game and some other cats on there or snoop. I mean this shit is just getting ridiculous now is this album even worth anticipating now ?
-
the song is aight..
but the quality is damn fucked up! i really hope that this isnt the remastered version.. cuz u have to turn ur bass to -100 if u wanna listen to this shit.. way too heavy..
dre is forcing us to buy beatsbydre..
peace

I wasn't expecting anything groundbreaking, I was just expecting it to be dope and as good as 2001. If these first two singles are indicitive of the album we'll both be dissapointed.
-
I had hope that the final version would be a lot clearer and cleaner... I didnt expect a Detox track to be a muddy mess. Disappointed
-
Floooooooooppppppppp ...This is pop garbeeeeeeeege ....Kush Instrumental is my shit , though.
-
think best thing to do is wait for the album ... then judge.
how did Dre fall off? we ain't heard what he has produced for the album?!?!
Dre ain't stupid ... there would be a plan behind an album as big as Detox
-
To everyone who's complaining about this song:
Don't spend your money on any of the Detox singles and especially don't buy the album. If you don't like it, don't support it. Major labels don't need your money. Spend your money on independent artists instead. Or on groceries.
Fake? No producer credits on the disc + dark part of the disc is right through the Interscope logo & possible code numbers ;D
The guy who ripped this is reliable. He doesn't do fake rips.

It's impossible not to judge something. You judge hundreds of things a day. Whenever you experience something you make a judgement on it. When you're walking down the street and you see someone wearing a shirt, you judge whether or not you like the shirt. When you hear music, in this case that shitty "I Need A Doctor" single it is impossible not to judge whether or not it is good. If Detox does drop I'll check it out because of Dre's track record for putting out dope shit, but if the album sounds anything like the shit for Detox i've heard so far the album will be wack as hell.
-
Fake? No producer credits on the disc + dark part of the disc is right through the Interscope logo & possible code numbers ;D
It doesn't matter that this is fake. We all know now that this is a legit Dre single that will most likely end up on Detox.

It's just the end of Dr. Dre as a respected artist and producer.
that was waaaaaaay back in time...

reviews on itunes are for the most part very positive
-
reviews on itunes are for the most part very positive
I was surprised to see so many reviews already, less than 8 hours after its release. I think this song will do better than Kush just based on its mainstream sound.
-
I've got no problem with people not liking this song. I don't really like it either. But I think drawing the conclusion that this song will be representative of the way the entire "Detox" album sounds is way premature, at this point. For one thing, "Kush" is also supposed to be on the album, and this song and "Kush" sound nothing like each other. Now, I realize a lot of people don't like the "Kush" single either. To me though, "Kush" at least sounds like a Dr. Dre song. This song sound more like it would have been a better fit for an Eminem album. It has Eminem on two of the three verses and Skylar Grey's hook sounds more like something that Em would have used for one of his songs. At any rate, the two songs that are supposed to be intended for "Detox" sound nothing alike, and there's no release date for "Detox." I wouldn't be surprised if the final tracklist gets changed about 10 more times between now and then. I would try to keep an open mind about the rest of the album, even if you don't like this song. If and when this album ever drops, I very much doubt that Alex Da Kid, Skylar Grey, and Eminem are going to be on the bulk of the album.
-
Hahahah, regardless of whether you like this song or not. Its just kinda sad its gonna sound like every other song out. I just peeped the Lupe leak and it has the exact same singer and producer. lmao.
-
this song wouldnt be so bad if it was for relapse2/recovery2 or whatever em's new album is called instead of detox..
but again, after hearing rumors about dre working with soulja boy and bieber etc this isnt that bad.. just dont fit on detox
reminds me of castle walls with TI and christina aguilera..
peace

Dude, this is JUST 1 SONG! Why do we need Dre to innovate again? I just want him to make a great album! Isn't that what it's all about? Also, Lord Finnesse produced 1 song in 2001, so I'm not surprised that there's a non-Dre track on Detox.
-
fits right in with whats hip on the radio these days. dre fans = disappointed while the new gen will like this. Maybe dre is targeting the younger crowd for this album, oh well not the end of the world. just another artist and producer that fell off

Funny to see everybody posting their suicide notes in this thread.

Well, I guess the more mainstream audience are going to be more receptive to this song than the people on this board. I have to figure that's the demographic they were trying to go after with this track.

every dude who likes hip-hop hates this song..
every 15 year old Eminem/katy Perry fan loves it!
fuuuck.
-
this is just terrible, already deleted from my iPod. and its very gay from dre to chose a song where the "guest" have two verses and he only have one
-
Man I copped the iTunes version hoping like hell the mix would be better, so disapointed. I actually think the songs all good it's just the mix is terrible and it is not crisp. What's the point in dre mixing this album in 5.1 if it sounds like trash.

Does anybody remeber that song "Puppet Master" made by Dre and B-Real? I think they should redo this shit and put Jimmy on the verse instead of Dre. And Dre should be that puppet girl on the video...

who's game trying to sound like on that song? :P

yeah Lord Finesse pretty much stole the show on 2001, but thats besides the point...
i think people expect "Dre to innovate" because thats what everyones whos worked with him on "detox material" has been telling the fans for years, its some next level shit, its gonna shake up music bla bla bla, where in reality he's just going through a crisis of confidence as hes getting older and left it sooo long to actually drop something, that when he has its a blatant attempt for a 40-whatever year old to stay relevant in the mainstream, rather than trying to cater to the fans who've actually followed his career since the early days
shit is pretty disgusting if this is the way the whole albums gonna go, guess im saving myself a few beans and not copping when it comes out 8)

this aint gonna be on detox, maybe a bonus track. i can bet.

This.
Also, alot of the fanboys claim we "want too much", or "you just want the 2001 sound over and over again". Hey, it´s not US that said Detox would be groundbreaking, something new entirely, a breath of fresh air etc. Dre and his camp did. Instead, we get "I need a doctor", after 10+ years of waiting. Priceless ;D

Nr.1 ..... If the next single isn't produced by Dre himself and isn't on the same level as Kush, I'll be dissapointed...
Maybe this fuckin' single has one positive effect. If it shows up on top5 in billboard (which it probably will sooner or later), I think the album will surely come out until summer.
-
lol @ one of the reviews that pops up on itunes
Weak (One Star)
by Eric Davis
The Dre of NWA and "The Chronic" is officially gone forever. The Originator now sounds like all of the other crap rap beats. Where's the bumps???! Where the beats that made your head bob? This song might as well be called Airplanes 2 and appear on B.o.B's album.
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1sgmQP-0LI
These days are definately gone. :-\
-
Proud of Dre? The faggot sold out to get up on the charts. Dude can't produce shit anymore, the old Dre would have put out a "how we do" or "in the club" without selling out and still get number one today. But dude lost
-
Good for Dre/Em, lets just see how much staying power this track has. Personally im over the song lol

Well according to 99% on this board "2001" was a mainstream album, making Dre a mainstream artist.
Why you thought that Dre was going to "stick to his roots" opposed to being a mainstream artist is BEYOND me. You think he fucked with Shady because he wanted to "give him a chance"? He saw potential in millions upon millions of dollars. Dre's always been about the bread.
Luckily for me, I fuck with mainstream music. ;D 8)
I would love for somebody to explain their "ideal Detox" to me. Then after you copy & paste the tracklisting to "2001", I'll just sit back & chuckle. Mwuahaha. ;D

Dre does stick with his roots, he just recycles and reuses pieces of his old sound and combines them with new drums, etc. to make a "new sound." Also, I don't think he's always been about the bread, like he still looks for guys that have the capability to rap well (like Slim, 50 before he sold out, Snoop, now Kendrick Lamar.) He's somewhat sold out, but at the same time, he's still the same Dre.
-
Dre is afraid of Detox flopping that is why he went the safe route with Alex Da Kid, I guess he is not going to flop :-\
-
I think this song is doing good on the chart so far
-
hmmm now that I think about it, for every Dre classic album, you're gonna have an "Aftermath Compliation" disappointment following it.

I don't quite hear the similarities between Straight Outta Compton, The Chronic, and 2001.
-
The problem with this is it conforms. Dre never showed signs of conforming before. HE decided whats hot and the industry (at least the west) basically follows. Instead of doing that right now, he's conforming. Alex Da Kid? Really?
Airplanes (B.o.B)
Airplanes Part 2 (B.O.B)
Love The Way You Lie (Eminem)
Castle Walls (T.I.)
Coming Home (Diddy)
I Need A Doctor (Dr. Dre)
What's the difference? There all Alex Da Kid productions, with "good mainstream" beats and catchy female hooks. That's 100% conforming. That's the problem with this track.

This track has the potential to attract people to pay attention to Dr. Dre that would have never done so before. Now if the whole album is like this track I'll be very disappointed.

Millions of people would buy this album regardless. He could have came with a mainstream successful joint without alienating his fan base (somethin' like In Da Club beat).
Watch, this album is gonna be very mainstream

I just heard the track...... :monkey_piss:
the fucks did I just listen too? One of the worst beats I've heard in a minute, track is garbage god damn

Completely agree. Since when did Dre do flavour of the month shit? If anything, he's always created stuff that others copied. Its kinda like with Eminem...up until recently, even though dude WAS commercial, at least he wasn't doing joints with Rihanna.
And of the above songs, I thing I Need A Doctor may be the worst...also, Lupe has a new ALex Da Kid joint as well, and it blows I Need a Doctor away

That's the saddest thing. Let's add Lupe's new single to the list which copies this formula (but he spits real shit). "I Need A Doctor" is easily the worst on the list. He was completely outdone by Eminem, Lupe Fiasco, Eminem, and yes west coast fans, B.o.B., ESPECIALLY T.I. (the best of the bunch) and even Diddy ;)

Would they? Dre is 45. That's Interscope's biggest challenge and the reason they decided to make a song like "i need a doctor" the first or second single. Obviously they don't think millions of people would buy this album regardless. How do you promote a 45 year old rapper to people who buy records (teenagers)? If he actually does end up selling millions of Detox, that would be unprecedented.

Dude, I'm not just talking about his solo shit, but shit he did for Em, D-12, 50, Busta Rhymes, etc etc.
Bottom line, Dre's whole career he has set trends, not copied. I don't mind the song, as the concept is dope, but the execution is bad. I'm shocked Dre didn't tighten up the production, as he has so often done to other producers tracks in the past

We'll agree to disagree then. He's viewed as something special by people who listened to him in the 90's. I don't think your average 15-20 year old today gives 2 shits about Dre.

Not a good analogy. Jay Z is 40 1st of all and he regularly releases albums. Between albums he's still always out there doing mixtapes, features, etc. Dre is a recluse. He comes out of his cave every 10 years and this time i think it's too little too late.

this track reintroduces dr.dre to the millions of eminem fans, pretty logical move in termes of sales. Can't wait for next singles even if this one is clearly a dissapointement. Its would be a nice track, if only it wasnt meant for detox..

Lupe's single is extremely well written but it sounds like a reference track or a left over. I will bet money that it doesn't even sniff Eminem's, Diddy's or Dre's sales numbers for a single. It is simply not commercial enough, and that chick's hook is terrible.

The Dre of NWA and "The Chronic" is officially gone forever. The Originator now sounds like all of the other crap rap beats. Where's the bumps???! Where the beats that made your head bob? This song might as well be called Airplanes 2 and appear on B.o.B's album.

Jay constantly keeps himself aligned with the hottest artists in the game, peep his new album Rihanna, Drake and Kanye. Besides, Jay has never done huge numbers, he just consistantly goes Platinum and retains the majority of his fanbase while gaining new fans to replace the ones who drop off...
As long as this single is the intro to Detox, and rest of the album sounds different I'm happy. Who knows though, with the success of thiss track they may make a shitty ass pop version of the album. We've had two singles with two completely different sounds and subject matter, so I think it's hard to pinpoint which direction Dre is going with this.

Lol it's already at #1 on iTunes (Kush took a long time to peak at only 10), I think it'll be either the same, or very close on the actual Billboard charts as well. See Dre, selling out does work!
And i'll say it again, I don't care much this song sucks or how much of a sell-out it is, just someone explain why the FUCK he's not producing his own shit on one of the most hyped albums of all time, mostly due to HIS production!?!

Well, it means the album won't be a front-to-back masterpiece (ala Doggystyle), because it already has this weak track and the just ok Kush...
BUT if there is even one incredible track like G Thang, Still DRE, Natural Born Killaz, then it'll still be worthwhile, because we haven't had a big classic Dre-style hiphop track in a good while now
If the album has 3-4 incredible all time great tracks, it'll be fine by me, even if the rest if wack...
In fact that might be good, if Dre sneaks some classic hiphop into the homes of kids, by luring them in with this Eminem track, then having the rest of the album some real stuff
-

Don't care much for Detox but more interested in its success so I can hear the crack the other artist he's work with got - slim (who I don't like all that much), earl hayes, busta, game, etc.

I've grown to appreciate this song. At first I was let down, but I understand the premise behind it. Eminem speaks alot of truth's on there about Dre and alot of shit that others have probably felt about Dre's delay in releasing this album. I understand this is far from the traditional Dr. Dre song, and I would hope this is the only song on the album that is like this. But I feel this song kind of reintroduces Dre to the world and address's the many things that have been on peoples minds about Detox being oft-delayed.
As long as this the entire album isn't like this and its full of classic Dre production, i'll be happy
Out of the Demo's, these are songs that I hope make it and are classic worthy
the song that had the hook "Bang it out your system this is Detox" I think its called "I am Hip Hop"
"Shit popped off" (almost reminds me of next episode in a way, combined with ghetto tango)
"Topless"
"Under pressure" How do people NOT like this song. Uptempo beat, futuristic sound that sounds like its coming out a fucking spaceship. Shame it was an unfinished version that leaked. Yes its a beat techno-ish but hey isn't Dre about moving the genre forward and not more of the same (which unfortunately "Kush" sounds like). Besides that shit would've gone off in clubs if it was ever finished off.

Well, the song dose sound better after a second listen..
I agree with what others have said, put this as the very first track on the album. Hey to the people that despise it, the album can only get better from after that.

Not happy to see it doin well on iTunes..
It should FLOP like no other single has ever done and maybe they would scrap it and re-do detox..
lol I know it would take another 37 years.. but that is what I would prefer.

I'm happy to see it do well. After all, a US #1 single will force Dre to finally finish Detox and put it out. We need this be over finally.

It has been reported that Eminem will perform “I Need A Doctor” alongside Dr. Dre at this year’s Grammy Awards.
With news that Eminem is set to open the show, new rumours have surfaced claiming that he will perform with Dr. Dre at the event as well as one of his 2010 hit singles.

Detox will do BIG numbers.

Not happy to see it doin well on iTunes..
I'm happy to see it do well. After all, a US #1 single will force Dre to finally finish Detox and put it out. We need this be over finally.
but it's sad that numbers are such a big motivator for dre

Go, Dre, go. 8)

Whether or not "I Need A Doctor" is a proper choice for a second single, if its a hot record, if its a hit record and if it really is all about numbers, it's all secondary right now. In today's record business, it's hard to judge an album's direction based on its singles. One song won't make a huge difference in the long run, I think the important thing is the album finally looks like it's dropping in the near future.
The better this song does right now and the more people accept it and react to it, the quicker we get the album everyone's been waiting to hear. I was never thrilled with the idea of "I Need A Doctor" being a Detox track but chances are like "Kush", it's not reflective of the album's direction or content. At least, I hope it isn't. Keep in mind that we still haven't heard an official Dr. Dre production from the album, we just have 2 non-Dre produced joints to go off of right now. It's more of a political issue than anything else at this point, if the label gets the reaction they're looking for, it's only a matter of time.

like suge say: This guy want to be white ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
what the fuck is this???? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Is this the same guy who created g-funk?? damn.
Fuck Dre. Listen to Quik!

Yet another Alex Da Kid/Female hook song.. ::) Everything he does just sounds too similar.. and too effect raped.
That one with a dope message though ^ wish Lupe would have spit it on another beat as its ALL OVER THE PLACE again.. :-X

+1, totally agree

...and that it's such a huge focus of attention by this forum and hip hop fans in general. It demonstrates the commodification of hip hop that has pretty much destroyed it.

oh shit! the man, the myth! haha what up man.

i usually don't make this type of comments but...
mabye dre should go back to smoking chronic, instead of taking steroids ;D

It has been reported that Eminem will perform “I Need A Doctor” alongside Dr. Dre at this year’s Grammy Awards.
With news that Eminem is set to open the show, new rumours have surfaced claiming that he will perform with Dr. Dre at the event as well as one of his 2010 hit singles.

Snoop gotta be mad. Seems like people nowadays like the Dre/Eminem combo more than the Dre/Snoop combo.
-
^Eminem is so madly more popular then Snoop, I think it's always been people would rather hear Eminem & Dre.
The only time it wasn't was before Slim was with Dre.

plus Kush isn't the type of song the Grammys want

I listened to this again today and specifically payed attention to Em's lyrics, which I actually really like now. Actually, the whole theme of the track is real cool and would make for a good intro, BUT the lyrics/hook is only a quarter of what anybody is looking for in a Dre track. I won't get into the other 3 quarters as that's a beat topic.
-
Has anybody heard this on the radio yet?
In 2 days, INAD already has more comments than Kush did in 2 months +.

I might actually like the song if Em wasn't yelling and they had put more thought into their delivery. After being forced to listen to his Recovery singles all summer (at work) its just unbearable to hear.

Song sucks. :stupid:

I Need a Doctor leaps TOPS the iTunes charts 8)
Just less than a day into the release, 'I Need a Doctor' just passed 'Love the Way You Lie' on iTunes into rank 84, 13, 9, 3, 2 and now ranking at 1. ;)
Dre is maybe trying to pull in new/young generation people that dont know him, through Eminem etc. Back in 1999, the young folks heard about Dre through Eminem etc. Maybe it was the same for some who were young back in 1999.
They probably using the same strategy now. Maybe im wrong.
Watch this space for the new music video which was directed by Allen Hughes, who was behind the movie 'The Book of Eli'.

Heard it on the radio today, the road to Detox has really begun...

shit is garbarge...its a pop song.

I've been a Dre fan since The Chronic and even though it's different from the old Dre, it's still amazing.

Just because you don't like this song that doesn't mean i can't like it, HATER!

I reckon this is what happened...
Jimmy and marketing over at Interscope said to Dre, "make sure you have a single, make something we can sell easily..."
And Dre was like, mmm, ok, I'll make a dancey number and have Akon on it and make it sound like the rest of the Detox tracks, but a little more obviously commercial,
and he's like, "Here you go guys, I did the single! It's called Kush" ...
And then Jimmy & Co were like, "wellll... ok, we'll try that as well, but just in case that doesn't really light the world on fire, then how about you just drop a little verse on the end of this Eminem track he did for you..."

Where did those Jimmy Iovine conspiracy theories begin?

what sells is poppy club songs with retarded lyrics, porn and violence.
But these guys are so huge, they can "suck eath other's ****", talk about their carriers and relationship over a cheap sounding instrumental... and its a number one single !
Not to mention that Dre is now over 40, how sick is that ?

anyone else think they took inspiration from doctors advocate, to the point where thet could be straight jackin it?
i think they took inspiration from T.I castle walls, or airplanes with b.o.b, or any other HipHop/RnB joint on the radio..
peace
except none of those songs have any comparable subject, soo ::)
wasnt taliin bout the subject, but overall consept.. like the slow hook, rap, slow hook etc..

I think it's fair to say that people are only checking for this song because it's got two Eminem verses and a female hook in the same vein as 'Love The Way You Lie'. Dr. Dre's name comes secondary to that, but I doubt he cares anyway, as long as it is doing well (which it evidently is).
I suppose the money men over at Interscope really do dictate what comes out and what doesn't. These days, if it's not a sure-fire hit that will cater to the masses, then it's doubtful that a song will get released as a single.
It's not that it's that bad of a song to be honest, just not what I imagined a Dr. Dre song in 2011 to sound like. Still, Dre has to move with the times like everyone else I suppose, if he wants Detox to be successful. I'm happy for him that it's no.1 in the download charts, hopefully that will spur him on a bit more.

yeah but like i said before, i really doubt they demanded to have someone else produce the single.
they must have faith in him as a producer, otherwise the joint venture with interscope wouldn't have taken off in the first place.
dre's insecurity is the main reason Detox gets delayed over and over.
perhaps jimmy or someone else advised him to jump on the success of Eminem's single.
-
its aimed at the eminem type fanbase, the new hiphop listeners aged between 13-18 who think wiz khalifa is the first rapper to smoke weed.. and the success of this song will in no doubt shape the song choice for the rest of the album, which will end up being nothing more then somthing similar to eminems last four albums.. commercial crap!
can any of you honestly think that in 2011, interscope/iovine will risk having an album like chronic 2001's features and content? theyve been waiting for 10 years for dre to get to this stage, there not going to take any chances, there going to aim to the new faggot fanbase of listeners who run around with skin tight jeans, gay haircuts and dance around like little monkeys!

The thing is as well, is that right now with Detox, it's not just about making money, it's making money BACK that's already been spent:
Dre sits in the studio all day, and someone has to pay the wages of the engineers, the sessions musicians, and for using the studio if it's a top studio...
They also have to pay to keep people on like his co-producers and they paid people like Bishop Lamont, etc to be signed to the label (not loads of money, but it all adds up)...
Dre has bought beats from other producers for Detox, that's more money, and I assume people he's brought into to ghostwrite, Jay-Z, TI, whoever, got
paid for those sessions.
And that's over a long time now, even if you start at a year ago if that's when he started the 'proper' Detox sessions, it's still a lot of money over a lot of time.
Plus they shot a video for Kush - that's all the crew's wages, the editor, the director, extras, and then artwork, not to mention publicity and marketing all this stuff...
The money is either all coming from Dre's pocket (which I highly doubt, but even more reason for him to want to make it back in that case)...
Or Interscope and Jimmy have been funding the whole thing, which is the most likely scenario, in which case they'll be very keen to make it back,
and they'll want at least one absolutely sure-fire single to get it kicked off and make it appeal to a big audience.
So it's not surprising they're going with the safe bet and copying stuff that has recently worked amazingly well for them - Eminem, female hook, etc.
If it was an underground album made in someone's basement on the weekend's, no problem, put on whatever you like, be as experimental as you like, because there are no overhead costs to recoup at the end of it.

I think the bad reception to Under Pressure really reinforced Dre's insecurity. He really thought he had the perfect single with Jay-z on it as well but the feedback was so negative.

I don't think the leak of Under Pressure had anything to do with Dre. It was incomplete, the mix sounded terrible, and it didn't even have a hook. Of course it was going to get a bad reception. The official leaks..Kush, and INAD, were completed and just needed mastering. Sadly, I think that with a good hook and another verse, Under Pressure could have been the better of the three.

probably. it had potential, could have ranged to good to great in finished form, but the foundation of it was pretty head nodding. nothing amazing, but it's not hard to make a better joint than kush (average/messy/corny) or INAD (emo/kiddy pop)...

Good post, I think you got it bang on. They need to make money back for 10 years of recording sessions ... I never thought of it that way. I guess they have to give up some of the "artistic integrity" that everyone whines about in order to make some dough. Your right, they gotta recoup and why not go with something that has proven to work (Love the way you lie)???

he seemed enthusiastic about it yeah.
but if he was confident about the direction of Detox, he would have never made a song like Under pressure.
i remember that he said a while ago, that he needed to go to the clubs to check what people are listening to.
-
I think also that he's been looking for the one hit single for a while now and could well have the rest of the album completed for some time now...
Like remember at the baseball game with Jimmy when he mentioned Under Pressure before it leaked and he was talking about, oh, I think we got the "one" now, we've got something to go with....
It sounds like the album pretty much in place and he's been struggling to just find a sure-fire hit to kick it all off with, and he probably made Kush just trying to make an obvious single... and just to make sure they did an Eminem track so the album has at least one really big successful single on it
-
Its such a shame cause I really think Under Pressure is a MUCH better song!

Where did those Jimmy Iovine conspiracy theories begin?
People need someone to blame. Jimmy is the face they can use for that. He's not an artist with a fanbase who will defend them so someone could say "Jimmy Iovine lours small children into ice cream trucks and rapes them then programs them to like Lady Gaga music" and nobody will even bother to question the absuridty of it all because who cares? It's very easy to shit on the guy that everyone is shitting on. Jimmy Iovine is to this forum what singing the Russian national anthem at a wrestling match was to crowds in the 1980's. What bothers me is how buying into all of this has really fucking DUMBED DOWN this forum. I mean, we talk all day about how pop music is trying to turn us all into lemmings but in the aggravation, we are buying into equally-idiotic theories just to break away from the norm.
And everyone is so knowledgeable as to the inner-workings of the Interscope executives. These transcripts of what we believe a meeting sounds like are fucking genius. Case in point.
I reckon this is what happened...
Jimmy and marketing over at Interscope said to Dre, "make sure you have a single, make something we can sell easily..."

And I bet basketball coaches talk to their star players like this.
“Okay, what we need to do here is for you to go out and shoot the ball so that it falls inside the hoop.”
It’s kind of a crazy outside-the-box theory of mine but maybe Dre knows he needs a “catchy single”. Maybe somewhere in the 25 years he’s been making mainstream music, he figured out that that the jump-off single for the album should appeal to as many potential buyers as possible so cashing in on having the most popular artist in music being signed to his label seemed like a good idea. I know he doesn’t have an account on this forum so his knowledge of the music business and how to make a hit record is iffy compared to ours but he could be on to something.
The argument of “selling out” is one that needs to die too. When he returned to gangsta rap after declaring it dead, nobody had nothing to say because he was giving the paying audience what they demanded. Now, when he’s working with one of his own artists (who he clearly gets a strong creative fulfillment from working with) and doing a record that the public clearly answers to, it’s a different story. Now, he’s Jimmy Iovine’s puppet.
If Dre is a sell-out, he’s a goddamn shitty one. Skipping out on the N.W.A. album after the Up In Smoke tour, the Farm Club performance, and Em’s diamond-selling second album probably cost him a nice chunk of change. Turning down a much publicized offer from Michael Jackson probably cost him some dough too. Hell, had he thrown out beats to half the mainstream people who wanted them on his albums during any of his hotter periods (Death Row, post 8-Mile and 50’s album, etc.), he’d be that much fucking richer.
It goes back to a similar statement I made about Game to his haters. Dre is no less of a sell-out today than he was in 1994. He’s working under the same basic business umbrella and catering to the same market place. The market may have changed. The audience’s tastes may have as well. Dre’s objective I’d argue is the same but the pressure to maintain is much harder.
I hear talk of people saying that it’s time to “lower your expectations” and that’s not the answer. Instead of limiting your expectations to traditional West Coast sounds or typical Dre guest features, listen to the music on its own merits. Broaden your expectations a little bit. Don’t judge the work on some hypothetical dream album you were never going to get. Judge it on what it is.

Judge it on what it is.
lol at the sarcasm, but it's on point.
with that said, wouldn't you agree that Dre has lost his confidence?
as far as selling out goes, i think you have a point, but wouldn't you agree that Dre hopped on the bandwagon this time?
the singles of his previous albums didn't sound like anything else that dropped before they were released.
sure the singles had mainstream appeal, but with it's own sound.
i can't say that about Dre's latest singles.
-
And everyone is so knowledgeable as to the inner-workings of the Interscope executives. These transcripts of what we believe a meeting sounds like are fucking genius. Case in point.
I reckon this is what happened...
Jimmy and marketing over at Interscope said to Dre, "make sure you have a single, make something we can sell easily..."

I know Dre knows that you have to have a strong single, but what Dre-Day is saying is right...
There is a difference making a song like G Thang or Let Me Ride, or Still DRE, which all fit the mold of the album they're on, and are produced by Dre, and are on some gangsta shit, and are considered classic hip-hop as well as selling big... and then making a song which clearly is a pop record
The only reason I bring Jimmy and Interscope into it is because it just seems like Dre tried making some hit single on his own (Under Pressure, Kush), but they didn't work out in the eyes of the label...
He didn't even produce INAD or do much on it, which seems a pretty odd thing to do for the first single of an album he's quoted as saying he wants to be some perfect, next level farewell album.
Imagine if Dre hadn't been able to get a hit single in the early 90s, so he dropped a verse at the end of a Boyz 2 Men record or an MC Hammer record, and then put it on the Chronic as the lead single... it would have been huge at the time, but it would have raised some eyebrows for sure and we'd look at the Chronic a bit differently

Dre even said recently he wasn't listening to new (rap) music, but i don't believe that.

Dre had a problem finding that first single for 2001 also, I think Still DRE was one of the last songs that was recorded. I think any track from that album could have been a single though but Still DRE was the perfect way to reintroduce Dre back into the rap world. This time it is more difficult because he was gone for 11,12 years and I guess he felt the heat after the underwhelming leaks and went the safe route with I Need a Doctor.

Co-sign. It's as simple and evident as that.

I'd say that's far from the same thing. For starters, MC Hammer was barely relevant when the Chronic dropped. Neither of those acts were on Dre's label. Eminem is not only an artist on Aftermath but one that Dre has consistently worked with regularly since before 2001 dropped. If we're gonna make a Death Row comparison, it would be like if Dre jumped on a Snoop record. I don't however feel that just because Em has more verses and opens the track, that it's just Dre dropping a verse on an Eminem track. The focal point of the content is Dr. Dre and the song is structured for Dre to jump in at the end. If you listen to the lyrics, it's building to that.
-
This is just a cop out for making a good quality first single. Lets be honest -- this is an Eminem song here. Dre has a small verse on the end and the production sounds like it's for Eminem and even the hook is a corny rave-like hook for Eminem. This doesn't even hold anything to what Dre's done in the past and he needs to get his act together. This is him saying "Hey Eminem, go make the record for me cause you can sell and I cant right now."

The album version will probably have an extra verse/big outro transforming into a massive ear shredding, head nodding beat. How bout that?

Some good points made by dre day and Jimmy h, im to hungover to comment right now but good read +1
-
I mean, what I'm seeing here is: "Jay-Z write the songs for me and Eminem do the songs for me and I'll rap a small little verse that you write for me." What good is the artist if he can't do the songs or write the songs? The production sounds even very-average for Dre. To me, the track that he did with Jay-Z sounded good but can't he record a single without Jay-Z or Eminem and just do either an all West single or a solo single like "Let Me Ride" or "Keep Their Heads Ringin"? I think most people want to hear Dre do a Dre record, not Eminem or Jay-Z. If people want to hear Eminem or Jay-Z, they will go buy their albums. Now Kush was okay for a filler track, but when are we gonna hear Dre do Dre. I'd rather him do the record and put an occasional guest appearance by Ya Boy, Eastwood, Young Keno, or Crooked I. Put a few new west rappers on there otherwise everyone is going to say "Jay-Z and Eminem carried your album" -- and you do know that.

What do you care what the album sounds like as long as it has a club song for Miami heads to dance to? I mean is the same guy who suggested that Ice Cube, Warren G, and Crooked I all have to do some faggot-ass club crossover shit so the Florida dance crowd embraces them really gonna bitch about how people are gonna perceive Dre as an artist for having the same people ghostwrite his shit that did it 10 years ago. Fuck that.

See now this is where you West Coast fans sounds retarded. Like mentally challenged, retarded.
This song "absolutely sucks" & is "Dre's worst". But bringing on one of the better West Coast artists who would likely go over a West Coast beat, who would lyrically have one of the better verses on the album is a "terrible idea".
I don't get it.

Just a question AdrianoDogg, why don't you ever release all you remixes fully?
I mean all we've been getting is teasers teasers and more teasers. Since years. And the only full song you ever dropped recently was a Justi Bieber remix? On this forum?
I'm very sorry if I sounded impolite, and I'm the last guy on here to whine about free material, but you understand what I'm saying....

Sounds like you are straight up hatin on Miami. Too bad that the album won't sell without Miami or New York $$$$$$. E-40 and Too Short made a better with "Bitch" (they play it in Hollywood and Miami). The Game works with that Miami crowd he's accepted by Fabolous, Diddy, Rick Ross, Cool and Dre, Scott Storch, and he's in the group. Game's newest stuff is fire so I don't know what you're getting your panties all in a twist for Game's been spittin fire like "Stop" with Rick Ross and "Ferrarri Lifestyle" with Fabolous and "Heartbreak Hotel" with Diddy. Dre could make music with a more modern sound and use his own lyrics. "I need a Doctor" is a Detroit sounding Eminem song with a small Dre verse. And if you read my post I said he should put new west artists on it like Eastwood and Ya Boy ::).

I haven't completely crossed out that idea. If they really are planing on releasing it within the next 2-3 months, i guess that this stage would be the perfect platform to introduce the single and the release date to the masses.

right - i can't think of a another way for him to announce it that would reach more people.
i can see him finishing the song, and then yelling "Detox! (insert date)" and then walking off stage. to me that seems like something he would do, but i may be way off.

Don´t think you´re too far off. Like in the video below, performing Still D.R.E. together with Snoop on Saturday Night Live shortly
before the release of 2001, Dre announces the release date "8)Chronic 2001... November 16th" at the end of the song.
Great version of the song too. Would be nice too finally get a concrete release date for the "Chinese Democracy" of hip hop..
For those that haven´t seen it before, or would enjoy to watch this again for nostalgic reasons...

I'm not straight-up hating on any region. I'm just find it amusing that with the number of posts you've written saying how certain West Coast rappers need to change their formula and do more club-oriented music so they can sell that you're now doing an about face and saying how Dre needs to work with more West rappers. And this isn't a Detroit-sounding record at all. Saying something like that indicates to me that you're not really familiar with the Detroit music scene. If anything it sounds like an Alex Da Kid record because he's the one who produced it.

Classic moment. Let's see how this goes....
Detox... a fucking myth... WHAT ?!
-
i honestly don't remember, but i'm guessing it was abc? whatever network that will be airing it this weekend. commercial said that eminem, dre, and rhianna will be performing together. so i'm guessing it will be love the way you lie + i need a doctor?
I just checked, it's CBS. And yes, if they mentioned Dre + Em + Chris Brown's punching bag, it's safe to presume they'll be performing LTWYL and INAD.
Thanks for the info, Snoop. 8)
haha i like your style ;D
Wit this joint, I could see 'em at the end of the performance, doing what Em and Elton did. Maybe a lil hug. Maybe a lil peck on the cheek. :-X They been down so long, ya know what I mean. :'(
That would be perfect. On the eve of Valentines day.
LOL +1 for making me laugh.
the promo for the red album has started

Out of all games recent stuff you pick some of the weakest shit he did. If Dre went in that direction it would be just as bad as this shit we're getting now. I need a doctor is on some gay love song type shit, i dont want to hear that.
Eastwood aint no new artist dude been about for years.
craigy-boy - lol at your avatar, it's my head!!
but i'd prefer to have my own clothes and not pasted onto a dude wearing a shiny jumpsuit!

Heard it on the radio at work today for the first time down here. No one even realised it was a Dre track.

Actually, the song was number one for the first 5 days and then in fluctuated within the top 5 and then yesterday it was at 23. There's close to 0 promo for that track right now... I'm expecting that to change around say...next monday.

^Truth.
Especially after they (if they) perform it at the Grammy's & then whenever the music video drops, it'll do better again.

Dr. Dre to Join Eminem Onstage at Grammys, First TV Appearance in a Decade (Exclusive)
The rap icons will collaborate in a live performance. Eminem is up for 10 Grammy Awards this year.
Continuing the annual Grammy Awards tradition of pairing A-list artists for musical collaborations, the Hollywood Reporter has learned that Dr. Dre will join his protege Eminem onstage at this Sunday's show (CBS, 8 p.m.).
It will mark the rap icon's first live television performance in more than a decade and comes on the heels of a stellar year for Em, who not only has the best-selling album of 2010 with Recovery, but is also up for 10 awards (he's won a total of 11 Grammys since breaking onto the scene in 1999).
Dre is also up for album of the year, as a producer on Recovery.
A new Dr. Dre album, Detox, is expected out in the spring. It will be his first studio album since 1999.
Previously announced performers for music's biggest night include Arcade Fire, Lady Gaga, Miranda Lambert, Katy Perry, Barbra Streisand, a duet by Gwyneth Paltrow with Cee Lo Green, as well as a tribute to Aretha Franklin performed by Christina Aguilera, Martina McBride, Jennifer Hudson, Yolanda Adams and Florence Welch.

Good thing... I hate the song but if we want to hear Detox this spring we absolutely need that INAD explod the charts.
I think that the third & last single before the album gonna be a real tsunami... the type of song we expect like Still Dre did.

WoopWoop ! Thanks for that piece of info Gutterman.
This will be part 1 of the interscope machine's promo. The song should take off after that, as long as with the video dropping shortly after, i would assume.
-
the only good thing coming out of all this is that we will get the album sometime in the spring

I'm not sure anymore whether this is good or not. If it took so long to drop a piece of shit like that, it must take him forever to make good music again...
-
How is dre nominated for album of the year for production on recovery? what he produced like one song on the album.

The next song that comes out will without doubt be produced by Dre. It just HAS to be.
-
I cant believe this shit is on DETOX.
Yeah very very sad..Dre sux!!

The return of Dr. Dre. So far, Dre has kind of been making his long-awaited comeback into an extended anticlimax. But if he's going to reestablish himself with a splash, teaming up for a live performance with Eminem is the means to do it. Let's hope they debut some music from Dre's looooooong-gestating album. Also included in this segment: Maroon 5's Adam Levine, who was recently seen posing in a set of Dre's headphones, but whose connection to the two hip-hoppers is yet unknown.
I like Adam Levine and it will be interesting to see if Dre and Em will be performing more than one song off Detox. 8)
-
Is the performance tonight?
-
Detox is going to be an above average album AT BEST
I thought Kush was incredibly dope, but this track would be wack even as a bonus cut
-
Is the performance tonight?
I hear they open the show with it.
Pretty hyped to hear it. 8)
-
Would rather eminem just performed space bound if they're making a video for that.
-

I wonder if he's doing any more songs. Because he's opening the show with something for an album that doesn't exist. Meanwhile, he's there to likely score five or six awards on the night, sweeping the Hip Hop portion of the show. It would only make sense for him to perform at least one song off the album that's the highest selling album of the year lol.
In related news, Slaughterhouse is sitting behind Lady Gaga & in front of Lil' Wayne, next to Eminem. Seeing Crooked at a formal event is going to make me crack up lol.
-
Didnt know slaughterhouse would be there. Fuck it just do session 2 instead of inad.
Bob Dylan is supposedly performing with em.
-
grammys = a big industry circle-jerk. just the right platform for dre to promote his new yes-men sponsored hits.

^No. Eminem has to perform his own songs, he's the one with the album. It's not a Hip Hop award show, nor a concert, nor a place for promotion for future albums that may not get the recognition later.
I'd be surprised if they did more then "I Need A Doctor".

So then at most, "I Need A Doctor", "Kush" & one Eminem song. Even that sounds like too much. They just added a last minute tribute to Artitha Franklin to open the show. That could be a ten minute slot. No way they give Em & Dre more then 10 minutes to work with; unless they cut these songs in half.

agree w/ Petey
:D lol at people thinking they might perform a song nearly 20 years old. Snoop and Dre (sadly) left that stuff behind a loooong time ago.

Aren't you the same person who was or is still convinced that Detox was all just an elaborate plan for Interscope to somehow make millions by intentially leaking unfinished guide tracks in low quality? Thing is you seem to make a lot of assumptions and you tend to be wrong. While I don't neccesarily believe they will perform G-Thang, I see no evidence to say they left it behind a loooong time ago. Dre and Snoop haven't done much collaborative promotion or touring since Dre did his last national tour over a decade ago. And when they brought their reunion to the spotlight, it was spring-boarded off an Eminem performance at the VMA's that consisted of one smash Em solo single, an Em-Dre collabo, and a Snoop walk-on performance of "G Thang" at the end. I doubt many people are worried about the shelf live of a twenty-year-old hit song at the same event that opened with current stars performing Aretha Franklin music.

Bob Dylan just performed his song "Maggie's Farm" from 1965, so it's possible
I wouldn't put money on any of the classics being performed by Dre, but when they get someone who's like an older legend, they often do one of their signature big classic songs

hopin..
-
If I were a betting man, I'd say it'd go more like this (if the Snoop performing thing is true) -
Eminem and Rhianna do Love the Way You Lie
then Dre comes out and they do INAD
then Snoop comes out as a "surprise" and they do Kush

Well.. I saw Dre perform live on tv again.
and fredwreck where was Snoop at?
-
hahaha no release date....theres no way dre will come back out and do kush with snoop or is there a chance that could happen?
-
That was actually an ill performance.
-
no theres no chance.
*facepalm*
dre seemed to lack confidence...
-
That was actually an ill performance.
I agree. Em brought his A game and I thought he had the crowd hyped up. Hopefully this will push Detox to be released.
-
I thought he did pretty good considering it was his first tv performance in ten years.
Eminem was off the hook, he really knows how to put on a show.
-
So...what did I miss? Other than a release date :P
-
Did they do an Elton ending? LMAO. :-X
-
So...what did I miss? Other than a release date :P
eminem and dre hugged and were holding hands while walking offstage
-
How sweet.
-
Actually good performance being 1st in ten years. Pretty tuff to go from nothing to the grammys, give the guy some credit. Em was much better tho, same with his verses. I won't be surprised if the video comes out this week.
Note to moderators-- can you close the other threads? Too many
-
he did like three shows with eminem this summer.
-
What's funny is that Em's second verse says exactly what everyone in this thread has been saying about Dre. He's unsure of himself and getting lazy, so he's using Eminem as inspiration.

I didn't like the performance. Eminem screaming like it was a hardcore song and Dre had no energy, plus the song really sucks.

Basiclly dawg that shit ain't hip hop, gangsta rap or even back pack rap. Tha stuff these fools is doing has it' own new genre. It's like elvis in the late 60s and early 70s, people in the inner cities didn't listen to elvis pressley we bumped james brown and sly stone. Shit ain't got no SOUL in it same shit james brown use to say.

this track is a pop song, a weak one at that. EM screaming every word was played out after 1 track on Recovery and he's still doing that stupid flow on Detox
-
Even though I don't like the song I thought the performance was good. Dre looked pretty comfortable to me.
-

The funny thing is, I bet they don't mind Lupe's new single lol.
-
Watched it again today on dvr - it was actually pretty damn good. Dre didn't have a lot of energy compared to Eminem, but that has never been his style.
Can any of you really picture Dre yelling, dancing, and jumping up and down on stage? LOL wouldn't look right.
