How the fuck did "Ha" get on there?
Title: Re:The Source's 151 songs of all time.
Post by: Twentytwofifty on July 31, 2003, 06:21:12 PM
"Ha" was huge.  That's the song that made Cash Money blow up.

"Eric B. Is President" and "Raw" are way too low, where is EPMD's "It's My Thing" or "You Gots Too Chill" and why the hell is "Dear Mama" in the top 10? And "One More Chance (Remix)?...I think I'm the only one that doesn't like that song.

But overall it's pretty good.  It's a difficult task doing this.

who cares if ha was huge...the fact that that made the list and Life's A Bitch, The 6th Sense, You Know My Steez, Tonz O' Gunz, etc... didnt make the list is fucking gay.

this list is on some bullshit. not to sound like a dickrider but their should have been at least one Paris song on there. Bush Killa is widely recognized as Paris's best song but yet wack tracks like In Da Club & Country Grammar are on there

Yeah, surprisingly no Benzino or Made Men joints there...

A lot of bullshit choices there, but it's a surprisingly good list being that it's from The Source.

No one from the Likwit, D.O.C at 134 with only one song (Portraight of a Masterpiece anyone?), no Work The Angles, Right & Exact or Worst Comes to Worst by Dilated Peoples.

It's not a bad list, although I have some questions, too.
You notice how little modern-day-hip hop is on the list?
I'm old school, so that's not really an issue, but I'm missing somebody like Cormega, Masta Ace, and a lot of West Coast shit.
Title: Re:The Source's 151 songs of all time.
Post by: OpTiCaL on August 01, 2003, 06:06:13 AM
gotta admit its not bad tho...

...im old skool too so its fine by me...would have been a travesty if some of the recent pop shite was on there...

...dues need to be paid because after all these people influenced (in various ways) the hiphop we have today.

Its great to see black moon, black sheep, queen latifa, dougie fresh, epmd, afrika bambataa, pete rock, public enemy etc on there as well as wu,nas, dre, mob deep, cube, snoop etc etc

the list is quite realistic in terms of greatest songs...some are questionable but you'll always get that :)

I have no clue why the Source keeps making list taht no one will be happy with. though the top Ol' Skool songs they had were about right. Some order change to everyone list, but like BET's rappers list, it's mostly on point, a couple of bad choices like BET had Nelly at 21, the Source had a few of there own misplaced songs. though I do think Chief Rocker needs to be on the list, to who ever that was taht crossed it out. At a time when only certain east coast artist got westcoast love in '93, like Eric B. & Rakim, Black Sheep, Tribe, Onyx and LL, Chief Rocker blew the fuck up, and was a great song. I think it's up there too.

I agree this list is bullshit, missing tons of stuff. Wheres the TWIN HYPE - DO IT TO THA CROWD that was bangin!!! But yah, Paris raped back when he came out, Devil Made Me Do It, Break The Grip Of Shame some of the heaviest rap songs ever. I'm a honky and those tracks made me wanna kill whitey.

They obviously consider impact, influence and popularity when making this list.  That's why you see "Ha" on there and "In The Club" (possibly the biggest rap song ever) too.  And they are all singles too.  This list is pretty good.

And LOL @ crossing off "I Got It Made".

93 til infinity should be much higher and with outkast on the list a few times one of the songs listed should have been players ball.

Mauz how can you ask such a thing...

....as said earlier to do a list like this is unbelievably hard...they would have had to go on sales...overall influence of the tunes to hiphop over the last 10 / 15 years...

...you look at the likes of the old skool groups..they in a sense made hiphop what it is today...by that i mean that todays artists are influences and get ideas from the past masters...

...its all been said before but it is a pity that the hiphop loving community of today ie eminem, 50 cent, ja whatever dont know and probably will only hear about 5% of the tracks / groups mentioned here on the likes of mtv, bet, on the net / radio.

Yo Frank...you need to take a chin check for this statement:
"I agree this list is bullshit, missing tons of stuff. "

cos its ridiculous...yes there are many of my personal favourites missing off there..but then again ive been buying hiphop since about '85 and i sure as hell cant name a definitive 150 of my own top tunes.

In a sense i love so many its impossible...of course i have some that ill bump till i die and have to play every day..all the same its sometimes just dependant on my mood etc at the time

Mauz how can you ask such a thing...

....as said earlier to do a list like this is unbelievably hard...they would have had to go on sales...overall influence of the tunes to hiphop over the last 10 / 15 years...

...you look at the likes of the old skool groups..they in a sense made hiphop what it is today...by that i mean that todays artists are influences and get ideas from the past masters...

i mean, they probably give points or something to those songs and the one with the most point ends up on #1

Not for some of the songs on there honey...

...you gotta remember back in the day it was virtuall unheard to have hiphop played on commercial tv / radio... we had to crowd round one slot a week for yo mtv raps to see the vids

...sayin that the message and white lines dont do it were hits in discos at the time...esp with the anti coke campaigns everywhere cos that was the devil of the 80's...

...im sure some songs on there like stan etc were on play time...sales...countries sold well in etc etc

but face it some were jus classics full stop  ;D
