Me personally, my cutoff is 13 - 15 years, for me to classify it as ols dchool

It's all subjuctive. To me anything before and including 96 is old school. However in terms of era's of hip-hop, I think old school ended in 92.

88
Exactly, one person says 88, one says 96...
1979 - 1991 could be cosidered "Golden Age" old school
91 - 97 - could even be considered 2nd generation old school... I guess it just depends on your age
-
I say 88-92 is old school period with the native tongue, public enemy, kool g rap, rakim, etc.
93-96 - is when the wu tangs, snoop, black moons, biggies and all them started coming out. i guess like the post above me said, the 2nd generation of old school.
-
I'd say any hip hop music made before 87-88 would be considered true old school because thats around the time the sound of hip hop started to change completely and add more things to it.

Which event, album or anything else divides the two periods?

No single event or album changed it, it was an evolution. Rhymes got more complex, new subjects started to rise, the production changed etc.
IMO, if there's any division line, it'd be somwhere in the 90-92 gap, and definately drawn in water.
And, like it's been said, it's subjective. But still, for me any other time sounds like a weird division point.
Shit, 96? Ha ha. :D
